Gundam as a "Street Fighter" game and Kung Fu movie with shonen anime elements
xamtaro26 August 2009
When they first mentioned "alternate universe" Gundam series, i naturally expected a series different from that created by Yoshiyuki Tomino or even other alternate universe series like Gundam Seed(which was the first Gundam series i watched). Mobile Fighter G Gundam felt so far removed from the stories of war that have become synonymous with the Gundam franchise that it came as a huge surprise to me.

G Gundam seemed to cash in on the popularity of Hong Kong "wuxia" movies like "Stormriders" and fighting games like "Street Fighter" that had gained a huge following from 1991 to 1994. I can safely say that the plot is fairly intriguing on the surface level. It takes place in year 60 of the Future Century, during the 13th Gundam Fight where we follow Neo Japan's representative Domon Kasshu who's mission is two-fold: win the tournament for Neo Japan as well as track down his brother who had stolen the mysterious Devil Gundam from the Neo-Japan government.

The central themes have moved away from the typical war and politics. Most of the themes center around the individual characters and interpersonal relationships. There is a hinting of a political theme here and there but it is never fully pursued. An environmental theme which seemed very common in the early 90s is also present but i would not want to spoil too much about what it involves.

Along the way Domon meets many bizarre characters and fellow fighters, some of whom he befriends. Too bad that almost the entire cast seem to be just re-threads of the usual stock characters and I know some people might find the portrayal of many of the side characters as slightly insulting to the countries they represent.( i don't think i need to go into details but i'll just mention "SCUD" Gundam representing neo-arabia. There are many others). The main characters only come across as mildly interesting with much of their motives(Fighting for his lost honor, fighting to free loved ones from prison, fighting to prove his manhood etc) seemingly "tacked on" just to provide some illusion of character development. There is even a attempt at a love story in the later part of the series that just seems to pop out from nowhere. Thankfully their interactions with each other are fun to watch and is helped along by some tremendous acting by the Japanese cast.

The English dub for this series was horrendous, which was a real pity actually. G Gundam's multi racial cast could have benefited from having different accents or even mixed languages(eg: Neo Japanese characters speak Japanese, french characters speak french, Chinese characters speak Chinese etc etc). Not only does the English dub for this series sound flat, everyone sounds.........Canadian; no effort at all is made to give the cast a variety of accents.

What i could not stand most of all was the tendency for this series to fall into the trappings of typical shonen anime staples. The constant "powering up" and learning new techniques got really old back in Dragonball Z. Sadly, even the animation is as dated as Dragonball Z with some well animated stock footage inter-spliced with the mostly stiff and uninspired character motions. The art is very basic on G Gundam and has an overall low budget feel. Details like clothing folds and shadows are kept to a minimum and sometimes characters look very flatly colored. Even 1980s Gundam series like Z Gundam and V Gundam manage to look better than this 1994 series. Only the overused stock footage of Gundams preparing to fight or performing special moves look remotely decent.

Aside from its engaging character relationships with top notch acting, a few thought provoking underlying themes and an overall original look and feel for a Gundam series, Mobile Fighter G Gundam suffers from too many flaws, from its less-than-mediocre animation for its time to the contrived story.

But if you are on the prowl for an over-the-top, entertainingly fun, action packed series that still has some of that "Gundam charm", then Mobile Fighter G Gundam is a great way to pass the time until something better comes along.

Fun and Dramatic - Who Knew?
DonaldDooD22 August 2014
At first glance, G Gundam looks like a completely generic, skippable title, turning a military drama series into a Saturday morning super robot cartoon. The premise is ridiculous, emotion is a power source, and every nationality expresses the country's stereotypes. But upon closer inspection, G Gundam is not as bad as it looks. There's backstories, multidimensional characters, plot twists, and a vaguer evil than it may appear. Sure, Neo Mexico's Gundam may be Tequila Gundam, donning a sombrero, but its pilot actually doesn't want to fight, and is trying to flee the country with his sick sister! I'd say G Gundam's writing and character are better than most animes. Not the best, but enough to add weight to the fights.

Now, whenever or not you'll like G Gundam depends on your love of super robot animes. G Gundam has a good deal of fun along the way, but I know not everyone's going to love robot wrestling, super modes, cheesy Gundam designs, martial arts philosophy, and the power of love! There's also a large number of vignette episodes. None of them are boring or bad, but they do slow the anime down a bit.

Bonus points for a pretty kickass soundtrack. The first opening, "Shining Finger", and "Erupting Burning Finger" are among the most awesome in anime.

G Gundam doesn't deserve Shakespearean analysis. But its well-balanced; Rifftrax-worthy elements with enough plot to keep you hooked. Its not for everyone, but it'll always be a (not-so) guilty pleasure for me.

Fun!
cpm68 January 2001
G Gundam is a rapid departure from the previous series(and even those that followed it) making it truely unique as far as Gundam series go. Instead of being secret weapons or prototypes embroiled in battles between the Earth and the space colonies, the Gundams are fighters embroiled in a tournament. This makes for truely bizzare Gundam designs, such as a Gundam that transforms into a windmill, a female Gundam, and a fish Gundam. However, don't be fooled by the campiness-"G Gundam" hides a lot of complexity underneath it's gaudy look.

I think people miss the point of this series
tdunl115 March 2010
Warning: Spoilers
I've read many reviews of this show about people complaining about the cheesiness factor in this series. and I completely agree this series is really cheesy, but it's supposed to be! This series is meant to be over the top...It's a romantic story that focuses on character development and dramatic irony above anything else...above the cool robots and fighting.

The writers did a fantastic job making a cartoon incredibly dramatic.

Domon Kasshu is the main character. At the very beginning of the series we are given nothing but attitude to know who this character is...We then discover that this guys attitude comes from the lack of control over his life, the compromising position he's in. he's fighting for his father's freedom and life against his own brother....by the end of the story he's fighting for the freedom of the world against the woman he loves.

The whole story is a beautiful practice in dramatic irony. It's art average gundam lovers! and the anime they used to make this series reflects that. The collages at the beginning and end of episodes are basically paintings depicting the mood of domon throughout the episodes.

I particularly love one of them at the end where they made a still of him fighting in space against the dark gundam and in the back ground you see an imprisoned Rain-his partner-standing behind all of it. because she was driving the Devil Gundam at the time.

I also prefer the English dub to the Japanese dub but that's probably because I'm really used to listening to English. I didn't care that they changed the names of things. it didn't matter to me and as for the voices being overly dramatic...i thought the show was already overly dramatic and was meant to be...what's a little more drama?

One of the best and underrated series around! A different side of Gundam
megimanxx18 August 2006
Warning: Spoilers
Well I first saw this series on cartoon network, actually I saw it when the last few episodes were airing. The show just sucked me right in with it's vibrant colors and very diverse characters. The setting is an alternate universe where none of the wars or battles that have to do with the original gundam take place. Mankind has developed a solution to regular war by developing the Gundam fight! Every nation has a representative that pilots his own gundam, they all fight until one rep. is left to rule the colonies for a number of years. The colonies were made after earth became to filthy for the major nations to live so each nation built a colony and set off for space. Now onto the story. We are first introduced to the show by an announcer. He really hypes up each episode and saying in every preview "everyone it's the moment you've been waiting for". He really adds the spice this series needs. We are then introduced to the main character Domon Kasshu. This character is rare but his personality is seen sometimes but rarely in other anime. He isn't the self confident man who has a dream. He's always angry and hiding his feelings. After a terrible accident. Domon's brother sided with His fathers newest invention. The Devil gundam. This gundam was meant to heal earth by regenerating the plant life, ozone layer and millions of other problems. But the computer brain inside the gundam malfunctioned and caused the gundam to turn evil. I don't want to give everything away but heres a few more things to get you more familiarized with the show. Throughout the show all sorts of amazing characters are shown with different goals and opinions. A real standout is the music. This show makes you want the soundtrack really bad. I think using an orchestra always drives the show. Some American companies take the show and add bad rock music, or just music that has no meaning accept to fill in the background music. The animation varies from really good to recycled. That doesn't mean it's bad but recycled is there to save tons of money, after all people don't have an infinite budget on a show. The show doesn't seem like 49 episodes since it really kicks off right when the 1st episode starts. The voice acting in Japanese is superb. As always the English version overdoes it and just really makes the characters over the top and annoying. I could go on and on about the series and my own opinion but I think it would become a book. So now that the series is in box sets. {The series is in two very cheap box sets} Please check it out. Weather you like gundam or not this show will leave a mark and of course tons of re-watching. G-Gundam will always be a masterpiece. And ignore people who want a perfect show with all the best characters and personalities. People if you want a perfect show make it yourself. Everyone the amazing animators work their a##'# off in Japan. They know what kind of show their making and how they want to get their personal feelings through different types of characters and events. So lighten up everyone. Thanks for reading this and definitely check this series out!

A Weird yet Intriguing Mecha-Anime Series that I really recommend Anime Fans should watch!
zanghi_james10 November 2020
Warning: Spoilers
After the strange campiness of ZZ Gundam, I was hoping for something more on the level of Gundam Wing.

Fortunately, my hopes weren't just satisfied with Mobile Fighter G-Gundam, but exceeded.

The story moves along at a nice brisk pace, not focusing entirely on the action sequences, but finding a nice rough balance between the action and character development. There are some cheesy moments, at least one or two per episode, that look like they would be more suited to the Dragon Ball anime universe. However, the cheesy moments don't rule the show. Also, there is at least or almost one major plot twist per episode, especially in the latter part of the show, which kind of gives the show a Game of Thrones-like vibe. The action sequences are impressive and the animation are well done. Also, I love the mecha design in this anime. Though, I think modeling the design of a Gundam after Sailor Moon is really strange.

Pros:
  • Great Character Development
  • Cool Mecha Design
  • Impressive Storyline
  • Great Villains
  • The technology behind piloting the Gundams is amazing. Essentially, the cockpit scans the pilot and the pilot uses his/her body to puppeteer the Gundam, sort of like Pacific Rim.

Cons:
  • Ending is a bit Abrupt and Open-Ended, much like the earlier Gundam series. However, it is quite a bit more optimistic than Zeta Gundam.
  • Sailor Moon Gundam just doesn't look right. At all.
  • Domon shouting his battle speech in every...single...episode right before he lands a coup-de-grace attack is so utterly repetitive and annoying. Seriously, How many times must I hear how his hand is burning red and seeks to claim victory?
  • Several storylines and plot devices are left open by the end, which could have been explored more. Hopefully, if there is a sequel series, we might see some resolutions.
  • Some scenes feel like they have been ripped and redone from Dragon Ball Z, mainly involving the fight scenes. I'm pretty sure I've seen a Kame-Hame-Ha be used in one episode.

Final Opinion: I highly recommend this series. It's fun, enjoyable, yet also dramatic and dark at parts. Really good show!

May the Force be with you!

Mobile G Gundam
Arvo432 September 2014
This is by far my number one series out of the Gundam series, I love the whole concept about it. It's a whole different change from all the other series. I like how you have to maneuver the suit with your skills as a fighter and not by controls. Also I like the fact that they hold a Gundam fights every 4 years to avoid war between earth and it's colonies. I really like the storyline that was set forth for this series, very interesting and mysterious catches your attention very quickly.

I really want to see another series or movie made on Mobile G Gundam as a lot of people are waiting for it as well.

"Did everyone's IQ drop sharply while I was away?"
J-bot619 October 2020
What happens when you remove the brains from Gundam and wrap it in Dragonball packaging? This.

If you're looking for plot, intrigue, political commentary, a thought-provoking story, or complex character relationships, you're much better off checking out the original Gundam movies that started it all (or perhaps Gundam : Stardust Memories).

You won't find anything in Mobile Fighter G Gundam that even approaches the territory of Legend of Galactic Heroes or even it's spiritual predecessor, Space Battleship Yamato in this video-game arcade fighter-esque installment with the name Gundam somehow attached to it. However, if you just want some excitement without the content that defines Gundam, then I suppose this might entertain you.

The animation quality is so-so; the English dub is pretty awful. However, the voicing seems to maintain the attitude of the show. The first antagonist is almost like listening to Starscream beak off long enough to have you reaching for the down button on the volume control.

Clearly, this is just marketed towards selling toys. No longer is real thought put into the process of entertaining (except perhaps coming up with a variety of mech designs). Again though -- that serves the purpose of selling product.

It would have been better if the people who thought up this series had just made an entirely new series instead of appropriating the name "Gundam" for it. Yes, you can have your amped-up Street Fighter battles. Just leave Gundam out of it.

By far the most action-packed Gundam EVER!!!
Oneirosophos14 July 2018
Warning: Spoilers
G Gundam was inspired by the Soccer World Cup in 1994 and was shown mostly in Asia & America, so it is mainly unknown in Europe. And this is a pity! I started it just for fun, due to this year's World Cup and oh boy what a delightful surprise it was!

Every 4 years there is a tournament, where all countries fight with their gundams (yes, PLURAL), The winner is the ruler of all universe, because the rich all live in Neo Colonies, around Earth, and the most unfortunate at the destroyed planet, due to the wars that have happened prior to the colonization and the tournament, which took the place of human wars. But Earth remains the battlefield and is continuously being destroyed...

The main star is Domon Kasshu, the pilot of Neo Japan's gundam and he is forced to represent his colony, because his father had built the most dangerous Gundam, Devil Gundam and was sentenced to cryogenic prison! He will be released only if Domon wins the tournament. But this tournament hides MANY surprises, surpassing even the "tournament" character...

Enjoy probably the most action-packed Gundam, with its extreme uniqueness, along with great animation and a beautiful soundtrack. Definetely a fresh one, escaping the UC Gundams and maybe the coolest daddy of all anime tournaments!!!

Fun, but extremely over the top
VichusSmith19 November 2002
If you have seen this in its original Japanese version or in English on channels like Cartoon Network, then you know what I'm talking about.

The premise for G-Gundam is "warriors around the world fight in the name of their Country and the final one standing rules the universe" or something like that.

It starts out great. Domoun Kashu is the protagonist and he kicks ass in his Shining Gundam. But after the first encounter with one of the chief villains, things get ridiculous.

People who were defeated come back. Gundams that were destroyed are new again. Gundams throw huge blasts of energy like Ken and Ryu from street fighter. Any unimaginable plot twist you can think of is in here.

That doesn't mean it's bad, but if you like more realistic action, watch any of the other gundam series.

The best thing about G-gundam is the way the gundams are piloted- every action that the Gundam does comes directly from the pilot's movements. That piloting system makes a lot more sense than pressing buttons and pulling levers.

I give G-gundam 6.5/10

A show that delivers despite its oddities
sarthaksangare15 May 2023
This may be the best Gundam series out there. I can understand the massive departure from the norm, but that is specifically why this series works so well. It is not afraid of being its own thing and expresses its story with unflinching clarity. Despite its goofy nature, certain stories can be extremely heartfelt such as the last fight between Domon and Master Asia. The show's build up is amazing and the action is just as awesome if not better. The story has a very satisfying resolution as well, though it overstays its welcome post the tournament win. Overall this is a satisfying, over the top, silly, amazing, and a ground breaking show that may just be the best Gundam series in my opinion.

G Gundam is good kung-fu series.
danmanultra9 July 2009
Warning: Spoilers
G Gundam is different from other Gundam series. And that's just one reason why I like it so much. Much like a good kung-fu movie, G Gundam has great fight scenes, endearing characters, brilliantly despicable villains, and cheesiness.

Characters: I find each character unique from each other, and generally just fun. Domon has a great a terrible drive to achieve his goals, while Rain patiently stays by his side helping him in every way possible. Each fighter Domon encounters has their own drives to, and its when these goals collide that the show gets real interesting. Almost the whole show could is about conflicting desires how each character has to find the strength to fight for it. Thus every character is a strong personality. Plus Master Asia is an awesome villain.

Mecha: Truly unique and quirky designs, with the main mecha being especially impressive. Each has its own special abilities that reflect the personality of its user to great effect. The Dark Gundam might just be the most unique Gundam design ever. The Gundam fights are also amazing, rivaling some of the best action anime.

Plot: Though not obvious at first, a strong plot runs underneath the first bunch of episodes, finally coming right into the forefront. Though the show starts as a simple tournament, it evolves into a huge confrontation with the very mecha incarnation of evil.

Conclusion: A fun and deceptively plot heavy story, with strong character and mecha designs.

Robot Jox
hellraiser721 July 2012
This show is probably the strangest entry in the franchise because it's so radically different from it's predecessors because it takes sort of a Shonen action route. But that can be a good thing because sometimes something different can equal a good show. I'm a fan of the Gundam franchise and I'll admit at first I was put off by this show but then it kinda grew on my and I actually love it, because for me it's a breather from the norm, this show is my forth favorite entry in the franchise.

It's basically "Street Fighter" with Gundams. There are a lot of very good things to say. I do like the concept I think it's interesting but it also really helped expand on the Gundam universe because we get to see the world and have different locations in each fight so it doesn't feel like their always set in just one arena all the time. I love how each of the Gundam's are designed their non cliché models each is always bizarrely but fascinatingly different, I even like their abilities which makes them all the more unique. I really love how the fights are choreographed they really are intense and feel unpredictable, due to the fact each episode has a different opponent and the abilities they. Each fight is never too long even though sometimes there can be an arc but it's a small arc.

However, what also makes the show are the characters, all have a great amount of depth as the show goes on there is always something new about them that we never knew which can make our feelings for the characters shift or grow. And each has a reason on why they want to win, which makes us care because we understand their reason. And most of all all of them actually develop as the show moves more and more forward along with each of their plots. Now a show sometimes with multiple characters and plots don't always work, but this show is able to successfully balance them out because it knows who each person is and what they want to do.

To me my favorite characters were Domon and Rain. Both are one of my favorite anime couples because their feelings for one another are genuine and develop. Domon is arrogant but never hotheaded, he is fiercely determined to complete is quest to free his father but makes sure his goal doesn't become obsession though it comes close sometimes, he does have warmth but doesn't show it unless it's with Rain.

Rain is a good friend/significant other, I really like the fact she isn't just some cliché damsel in distress or even a mere hood ornament along for the ride but that she has a function. She is the engineer for Domon's Gundam as well as childhood friend, she's sweet but very smart and does have a hint of spice in her persona, she really takes the time to listen and understand Domon, she does eventually pilot her own Gundam so she can hold her own, and she hot she does look great in that tight Gundam body suit it does display her ahem features.

Both I feel have great chemistry, their relationship is the typical friends to lovers motif but it's done right and I actually did deeply care and buy into it especially for what happens near the end which I won't give away but their unforgettable and beautiful.

Well I'm finished, G Gundam like any good machine has all the right parts to make it work.

Rating: 4 stars

Gundam Fight!Ready Go!
veggeta31 August 2000
Like all entries in the Gundam universe, this is set far in the future with people living on earth and in space colonies. The story goes that earth has been rather messed up by pollution and so each country makes itself a colony in space(which look like floating islands). To determine who will rule the earth the gundam fight is held.So each country sends a gundam that is repesentitive of itself and a style of fighting unique to itself to be entered in this tournament. The mech designs were pretty cool although a few of them seemed somewhat stereotypical like Neo Spain's Matador Gundam. The show offers some relatively decent charecter developments but not all that much intricate plot. This should please gundam fans and some non gundam fans since its not that hard to follow and can simply be watched just for the heck of it.

A great Anime for those who can sit through it. (Possible Spoilers)
Yerkman8 August 2003
Warning: Spoilers
G Gundam is a very unique version of the whole Gundam series. Instead of sitting cockpits like in most of the other gundam tv series, the cockpit is based for martial arts style fighting.

Alright, basicly earths people now live up in colonies, and they have a gundam fight tournament to choose who will rule for a while. It sounds like a simple little plot but it gets better.

The main characters are Domone Kashuu, a fighter from Japan, and his crew member and friend, Rain Mikamura. They go around beating up other gundams from other countries, with their own, the Shining Gundam. And everyone is just dandy.

The characters are good, and develope pretty well once you see the end. The Story altogether is like a mystery. Most of it isn't revealed until the middle. The Gundam designs are clever, and the villian (or who I concider the villian) is the best one I've ever seen.

The main villian is a Gundam named "Devil Gundam" (Or how the American cencors call it "Dark Gundam") It's basicly a gundam that thinks and acts on its own, using the 'pilot' as a power source instead of as a master. The Gundam can self regenerate, and self evolve (each evolution being more disturbing and freaky then the last. In the last few episodes, the Devil Gundam brings the great dramatic effect by taking Domone's partner.

I can honestly say this is one of my anime favorites, because it has mystery from episode 1, to the last fight on 49. Go see for yourself.

Supporting cast just manages to save this show from its star
Dr Wily19 February 2003
To start off, an overview of the program. In an alternate, future Earth, colonies have spread throughout the solar system. Every four years, a grand tournament is held between fighters piloting giant robot weapons called Gundams. The fighter that wins, his represented nation controls the rest of the colonies until the next tournament. Enter Domon, representing Neo-Japan, first looking for his missing brother, but eventually becomes involved in a fight to save the universe when others behind the scenes of the tournament make their own plans for the outcome.

And, it is Domon, the lead character, who brings this show almost grinding to a halt. Rarely has such a flat central character carried a program. He wins 99.9% of his fights simply because he is the main character. The writers pull off the most unbelievable excuses to make sure he wins, if they even bother to do that! Sometimes, they just have Domon win for no real reason at all. As a martial artist, his character takes the stance that "he can only communicate with his fists." Well, what a great rationalization for violence, eh? And, strangely enough, everyone around him just accepts and believes this! Add to this several sub-plots involving him that are rather blatantly obvious: the mystery of the fighter Schwarz Bruder (Anyone with a German 1 high school level of the language can guess who he really is.) what happened to his father, and the unexpected love story that develops in the last few episodes, and, we really come to care less about whatever happens to Domon by the end. We know he'll win before he even enters a fight, so, there's no sense of tension.

That having been said, the supporting cast of characters is quite a surprise. Save for a couple, most have believable motivations. Argo fights to free his friends wrongfully imprisoned because of what he's done stands out, even though this plot element isn't touched that heavily upon. Even a minor character, who only appears a couple of times, becomes important and interesting when it is learned his wife was killed accidentally involving Argo. He blames the Russian for her death when, actually, he had been trying to save her at the time. The current colonial leader, Wong, is manipulating the tournament so his nation can rule for all time by resurrecting an all powerful Gundam. Domon's teacher, Master, is using Wong to get the Gundam for himself because he's become mad with the belief that the Earth must be saved from mankind itself. Even George, whose reason for fighting is one of the less creative ones, to battle for the honor of his country, is carried off better than the star's.

In the end, the smaller stories do manage to save this series from its bland central focuses. The idea of giant robots battling for a specific purpose beyond war is also a refreshing take on the past Gundam shows. Not the best action cartoon ever, but, better than some Gundam series. Definitely a show that is better than its main character.

The Best of the Mechs
Neko_Allenby26 August 2003
Personally I find that G Gundam is the best of the Gundam Saga. My reasons are as follows:

The Message: All gundam shows were designed to portray the image that "war is heck" however they do so with a war. So much that it almost blocks out the mesage. G Gundam shows us a different way of keeping order: a tournament. It also shows us how war is bad throughthe idea of the Chaos war that took place before the show began in FC 02. (This is something only a true fan knows)

The plot: Okay, I must admit that the breakup of time is shaky, Ep 1=January Ep 6=June Ep 12=October Ep 18-24= November then the last episodes take place in December or so I figure it. Other than that it takes you through building friedshps, relationships, tough desicions, awesome mech battles, and a few shot of women's unmentionables or women bathing in episode 19 (Thank you for that moment of perversion, Sai Saici)

The Mech design: Alot more thought goes into these mechs, the researchers found out the history and present of each nation and put one important aspect into the Gundam. e.x. the reason the Nobel Gundam looks like a woman is bcause there are more females than males in swedens current populaton

The characters: Where else are you going to see an American boxer, a perverted Chinese midget teenage martial artist, A Russian convict, a French nobleman and a Japanese dude with major tude problems working together to save the world with giant robots? Included in the cast are several Japanese officials (Or rather Neo-Japanese as the story goes). A Neo-Japanese doctor, a crazy Neo Hong Kong martial artist with a bad cough, 4 annoying Neo-American women, A really creepy Neo-Italian MAFIA boss, a Neo-Swedish orphan and more!

This is the best of the Gundam stories I have seen!!!
awingalex13 January 2005
If you like rock and roll,street-fighting action, then this is the Gundam series for you. It's colorful, quick paced, and full of gundam battling that would satisfy any mech fan. Gundam purists don't like this series because they prefer slow, dramatic soap operas occupying their shows with few robot battles. I prefer it the other way around, and G-Gundam satisfies my need for gundam suit clashes with a thrilling battle every episode...sometimes even two or three a show!! The story of Domon Kashu looking for his long lost brother while competing with other gundams from different countries for the ultimate title of Gundam Fight World Champion is thrilling and keeps you coming back each and every episode to find out what happens. If you like action, watch Mobile Fighter G-Gundam...if you like to watch characters blab all day about their problems and hardly battle, try another older gundam series.

Black Sheep of the Gundam saga
zerstorer200025 May 2003
This series is obviously the commercial wing of the Gundam saga. Though it does have some character development and such, it pales in comparison to the other Gundam series. Besides, this show betrays the idea of a united humanity that is present in all the other series (no country is mentioned by name in any of the series except for geographical reference). The gundam for every country idea is easily marketed, easily seen at the local toy store, where G Gundam action figures heavily outnumber other Gundam models or figures. In short, mainly a trailer for the toy, like so many other cartoon shows these days. See Gundam Wing, 0080, 0083, Mobile Suit Gundam, or 08th MS Team for a much better taste of the Gundam saga.

One of Gundam's best, though overlooked.
keyansmite9 December 2003
Mobile Fighter G Gundam. One of my personal favorites (and believe me, I have seen every Gundam series around. Blarg to Victory Gundam! Blarg, I say!) Anyway. This anime is often overlooked for it's rather flashy, and cheesy setting and mechs. And I agree, it has it's bad points, often in a little bit of plot inconsistancy. (Neo England's fighter goes evil? What?) However, it's other features save it. The Gundams and the fighters themselves are incredibly diverse and interesting. You've got a boxer wanting to live out the American Dream, a Russian space pirate fighting for his comrades, a French knight... not to mention a German ninja! Other than the few holes, the plot is very interesting, and can get rather emotional at times. Mecha designs are so diverse, you never get the same thing twice, save when the Shining becomes the God Gundam. You've got a bit of symbolism, in God Gundam vs. Devil Gundam, and it's interesting to note that the Shuffle Alliance is almost exactly the UN Security Council. I must say, though, the worst thing about this anime is it's dub. It makes me want to cry. They rename things for no reason. Some I can understand, but still think should be unchanged. (God Gundam, Devil Gundam, possibly Tequila Gundam) Others are changed for absolutely no reason. Lumber Gundam, based around a lumberjack, uses axes for weapons, etc., changed to the Grizzly Gundam. Gundam Spiegel, Neo-Germany's Gundam, is changed to the Shadow Gundam. Oh no! They might not understand that the German Gundam's name is in German! Better change it! The voice actors themselves seem un-emotional, and speak halting-ly. If you have the option, never watch it. Watch it subbed instead. Though I do admit the ending is uber-cheesy. LOVE LOVE TENKYOKEN!
