What if “It Follows” was a romantic comedy?
That’s something like the premise for the upcoming series “Laid,” which premieres on Peacock this holiday season. The streaming service released a trailer for the sitcom on Wednesday.
“Laid” stars Academy Award nominee Stephanie Hsu (“Everything Everywhere All at Once”) as Ruby, who realizes that her former lovers are all mysteriously dying in unusual ways. With the help of her friend Aj (Zosia Mamet), she goes back through her “sex timeline” of exes and past hookups to find out why it’s happening and stop it once and for all. No one has ever been so unlucky in love. “Laid” is described as “a f–-ed up rom-com where the answer to ‘why can’t I find love, is there something wrong with me?’ is a resounding ‘Yes. There is. The problem is definitely you.’”

Laurie Metcalf and Eric McCormack have been tapped as guest stars in Season 2 of CBS’ “Elsbeth,” the mystery spinoff of “The Good Wife” and “The Good Fight” starring Carrie Preston as the de facto detective Elsbeth Tascioni.
Metcalf will appear in the eighth episode of the season as Regina Coburn, “the star of a police procedural who yearns for artistic fulfillment after playing a no-nonsense, hardened detective for two decades,” per CBS.
After the showrunner of Regina’s long-running series is “brutally murdered in his office in what appears to be the act of a disgruntled fan,” Regina goes toe-to-toe with Elsbeth as she becomes a prime suspect.
In the ninth episode of Season 2, McCormack will play Tom Murphy, “the charismatic and charming founder of Heiwa Zen Center, an upscale holistic wellness retreat that caters to the one-percent.”

An aging Commander in Chief faces health struggles, and as a result, his younger, female vice-president ascends. That is, of course, the story of the 2024 presidential election in which Vice President Kamala Harris became the Democratic nominee, replacing an ailing Joe Biden. But it also happens to be a TV show plot – nearly 20 years ago.
The series, Commander in Chief, which premiered in 2005, starred Geena Davis as the first female vice president in American history, selected to help an older, white male political candidate appeal to other constituencies. Sound familiar? There are notable differences between the political fiction of the show and the political realities of the 2024 race, however. For one, fictional President Teddy Bridges is a Republican, while Mackenzie, portrayed by Davis, is an Independent. Oh, and in the show (spoiler alert!) the president dies, leading to the first female Commander in Chief.

John Cleese is best known as a member of the British comedy troupe Monty Python. Let’s look back at the Oscar-nominated funnyman and his 12 greatest films, ranked worst to best.
Born in 1939 in Weston-Super-Mare, Somerset, England, Cleese rose to prominence thanks to the British sketch series “Monty Python’s Flying Circus,” which ran for four seasons on the BBC from 1969-1974. The troupe — which also included Graham Chapman, Terry Gilliam, Eric Idle, Terry Jones and Michael Palin — revolutionized comedy with their surreal, experimental sketches, the best of which were assembled into the film “And Now for Something Completely Different” (1971). This led to other cinematic outings, including “Monty Python and the Holy Grail” (1975), “Life of Brian” (1979) and “The Meaning of Life” (1983).
Cleese achieved big screen success of his own with “A Fish Called Wanda” (1988), which he wrote and starred in as an uptight English barrister who becomes entangled in an elaborate...

Jeff Goldblum’s film career started in a particularly auspicious manner since his first four films were all highly regarded works of the early 1970s: “Death Wish”, “California Split”, “Nashville” and “Next Stop, Greenwich Village.” He continued to work in film and television for the next four decades and even returned to Broadway a few times, most notably in the highly regarded Martin McDonough play “The Pillowman.”
Along the way Goldblum has picked up a number of award nominations including an Oscar nomination for Best Live Action Short Film for “Little Surprises.” He received an Emmy nomination for a guest appearance on “Will and Grace” in 2005. He also was a nominee for Best Actor for two of the most prestigious critics awards groups for his work in “The Fly.” Both the New York Film’s Critics and the National Society of Film Critics named him as one of the top three actors of the year.

Hopefully, everyone hasn’t missed Madeline Matlock too much, but don’t worry — that wily woman is back with Matlock Season 1, which is officially airing on its broadcast schedule!
After a groundbreaking pilot, the show premiered an encore of the first episode, so everyone should be up to date on the big twist by now! If not, watch it and meet me here in an hour.
Suffice it to say that Matlock took the broadcast world by storm and left many viewers baffled with questions. Does she get Commuter Pay for traveling into the city? I’m just kidding.
(Sonja Flemming/CBS)
The real question on everyone’s minds is, how will Madeline be able to keep up the charade at Jacobson & Moore?
Luckily, CBS has not only a promo for Matlock Season 1 Episode 2 but also a sneak peek clip!

People navigating love life and life in general is hardly a new subject in cinema and other art forms. Even the setting in which a straight woman lives with a gay man in the same apartment is not that new. However, Park Sang-young‘s novel “Love in the Big City” is not merely a Korean riff on, let’s say, Will and Grace TV series. On the contrary, it aims for something more earnest, realistic and aware of the wider societal context.
Love in the Big City is screening at Hawai’i International Film Festival
The best-selling novel is actually getting two releases this fall. While the TV series adaptation will hit the small screens later this month, the big screen one, penned by Kim Na-deul and helmed by E.oni, formerly known as Lee Eon-hee (of 2016 “Missing” fame), has already premiered at Toronto and screened at Hawaii International Film Festival.

A fail on the Fox game show The Floor has left the internet floored, and an expertly timed camera pan was the very shady cherry on top. The clip was shared on X (formerly Twitter) over the weekend, with two female contestants facing off in a 45-second round called the quiz duel under the category of sitcoms for the most points. With full-screen cast photos behind them, they identified one sitcom after another with ease. Heather got Parks and Recreation (fitting since the show is hosted by Rob Lowe), Julie Anne got Golden Girls, and Heather got Will and Grace. Then came trouble. – y’all please look at this! Saturday Night Live‘s unpredictability is one of its trademarks. It’s a live show, so anything can happen in the three to five minutes a sketch is aired. But sometimes, even the most well-written and rehearsed elements of the sketch comedy series can go haywire. Here are four times actors totally broke character and made their sketch even funnier than originally intended.
Every ‘Saturday Night Live’ Ryan Gosling ‘Close Encounter’ sketch with Kate McKinnon
This now-classic Saturday Night Live sketch, “Close Encounter,” is a recurring bit about three friends abducted by aliens and questioned by the Nsa and Seti. Kate McKinnon, Ryan Gosling, Cecily Strong (the longest-tenured female cast member in the series history), and later Sarah Sherman played the friends. Aidy Bryant, Mikey Day, and Bowen Yang all played Nsa officers.
Two friends had peaceful experiences with the aliens, sharing the glow and warmth they felt from the otherworldly creatures.

Note: This story contains spoilers from the “Brilliant Minds” series premiere.
“Brilliant Minds” introduces Zachary Quinto as Dr. Oliver Wolf, a neurologist whose unique life and skillset is loosely drawn from the acclaimed Oliver Sacks — down to the complex relationships laid out the NBC procedural’s pilot.
“It’s a contemporary version of that character, but it’s not biographical,” showrunner Michael Grassi told TheWrap. “Oliver Sacks lived such a … robust, incredible life and to have that as inspiration, and as a jumping off point has been so helpful … to build this really fascinating character at the center of our medical show.”
Pulling from access to two of Sack’s books — “The Man Who Mistook His Wife for a Hat” and “An Anthropologist on Mars” — Grassi drew from Sacks’ prosopagnosia, also known as face blindness, to craft Oliver’s character. The cognitive disorder, which is revealed in the premiere episode,...

When Emmy presenter Catherine O’Hara announced “Hacks” as the winner of Best Comedy Series at Sunday’s Primetime ceremony, awards pundits everywhere had to pick their jaws up off the floor. “The Bear” was the overwhelming front-runner to claim its second victory in that top category, especially after setting a new comedy record in 2024 for 11 wins in the same season. But “Hacks” prevailed, and in doing so it became only the third show in history to win Best Comedy Series for Season 3 after losing its first two bids.
The other two laffers to accomplish this rare Emmy feat are “Get Smart” in 1968 and “Sex and the City” in 2001, which means “Hacks” now finds itself in rare company indeed. Monday’s episode of FX’s English Teacher started with a literal bang — a deep, echoing gunshot heard by creator Brian Jordan Alvarez’s titular English teacher (first name Evan) as he walked to meet his classroom of students. Evan throws his hot coffee across his dress shirt and falls to the floor in a truncated attempt at crawling, then grabs two students from the hallway and ushers them to safety in a nearby classroom.
Evan is panicked, but the kids are unimpressed — apathetic, even —and tell him that the sound was not actually reason for emergency, but rather the standard proceedings of Markie (Sean Patton) the gym teacher’s student gun club.
The setup feels serious as these sentences come together, but there’s something about the pacing of its events that maintain the comedy’s lightheartedness; the audience knows they’re supposed to laugh, even before they know everyone is safe.

Brian Jordan Alvarez is one of the most interesting voices in comedy. The general public likely recognizes him as Estéfan in "Will & Grace," Wesley in "Jane the Virgin," or Cole in "M3GAN," but real ones know that he's the brilliant mind behind the Gotham Award-nominated five-part web comedy series "The Gay and Wondrous Life of Caleb Gallo" ... and, if you've spent any time on TikTok, his hit viral universe of filterface characters like Tj Mack. Now, Alvarez serves as the creator, executive producer, and star of the FX workplace comedy "English Teacher," the best new comedy of 2024 and the rare show that manages to tackle Gen Z without sounding like it was written by a bunch of dinosaurs who still ask their nephews to help them open PDFs.

Marta Kauffman didn’t think twice about signing on as a co-host for Cooking for Kamala, a fundraiser for the vice president featuring an “intimate dinner” designed by celebrity chef Nancy Silverton. The evening, set for Sept. 14 in Los Angeles, includes an appearance by Senator Mark Kelly of Arizona.
“Nancy is my neighbor and I may have been the first person she asked to come,” the “Friends” and “Grace and Frankie” co-creator says. “She simply said, ‘Would you do this with me?’ and I immediately said, ‘Yes!’”
While Kauffman is optimistic that Harris will win the White House, she’s also staying cautious after having watched Hillary Clinton lose to Donald Trump in 2016.
“I got complacent and thought, ‘You know, all the polls say it’s going to be Hillary,” Kauffman recalls. “And this is going to be a tight race. Now is when we have to start doing everything we can — sending postcards,...

Plot: Frasier Crane is in the next chapter of his life after he returns to Boston to face new challenges, forge new relationships and—with hope— finally fulfill an old dream or two. The sophomore season will see Dr. Frasier Crane return to his radio roots at Kacl in a Seattle-themed episode. The series is filmed in front of a live studio audience at Paramount Studios in Los Angeles.
Review: While many of you may feel that Frasier is too old school, we love the series here at JoBlo.com. The revival of the Cheers spin-off was a refreshingly retro sitcom filmed in front of a studio audience that, while familiar, was better than many other recent series returning to the airwaves. After a ten-episode first season knocked any dust off the character of Frasier Crane, the season two run jumps right into the screwball shenanigans that have always made the...

“Remember who you are. Remember.” This is one of the most iconic lines coming from one of the most iconic voices in pop culture. For nearly 70 years, James Earl Jones made a mark on the screen, stage, and television. Many know him as the iconic voice behind Darth Vader of the Star Wars saga and Mufasa of The Lion King franchise.
But there is a lot more storied history from the world-famous gravel voice that brought the entire galaxy to its knees and that led a boy to be king.
Humble Beginnings
Born on the 17th of January 1931 in Mississippi, James Earl Jones found his passion in poetry and acting to overcome his stutter, making him embrace his deep voice. It is truly amazing how overcoming a disability led him to be one of the most recognizable voices in film.
He then ventured into theater, eventually debuting in 1957 on Broadway...

Actress and singer Patti LuPone, known for her work in musical theater, criticized reality star Kim Kardashian over her acting abilities. Interestingly, the conversation was about another starlet’s acting abilities. Notably, this isn’t the first time LuPone has talked about Kardashian.
The Conversation Actually Started About Madonna
LuPone appeared on Hot Ones Versus with actress Aubrey Plaza on the First We Feast YouTube channel. Both actresses appeared to promote the Agatha All Along miniseries, a spin-off of WandaVision.

During the game, the two guests must tell the truth or eat a wing, with the winner being the one who eats less wings.
During the show, Aubrey Plaza brought up an appearance LuPone made on Watch What Happens Live where she criticized singer Madonna as an actress. The singer had performed the role of Eva Perón in the film adaptation of Evita, a role which LuPone had originated on Broadway.

James Earl Jones, the Egot-winning actor known for voicing Darth Vader in the Star Wars franchise for four decades, has died at age 93.
Jones passed away at his home in Dutchess County, New York, on Monday, September 9th, according to the actor’s representatives.
The son of actor and boxer Robert Earl Jones, James Earl Jones was born in Arkabutla, Mississippi on January 17th, 1931. His father left the family shortly after his birth, and Jones was raised by his maternal grandparents in Michigan from the age of five. Jones found the transition to living with his grandparents so traumatic that he developed a stutter and spent his time in school mute. He credited his high school English teacher, Donald Crouch, for helping him with his stutter; Crouch discovered Jones had a talent for poetry, and encouraged him to read his work aloud in class.

“Vanderpump Rules” and “The Valley” star Jax Taylor is opening up about his recent bipolar and Ptsd diagnoses. The Bravo reality TV personality shared his mental health update on Monday after checking into “an intensive inpatient treatment facility” a little over a month ago.
“After many years of knowing something was wrong but not knowing exactly what it was, I recently learned that I was diagnosed with Bipolar Disorder and Ptsd. It’s been a lot to process and an emotional time for me, however I’ve come home to my son with a newfound sense of peace,” Taylor wrote on Instagram. “I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t scared for the future but my focus is just trying to be a better version of myself than I was yesterday. Mental health is a lifelong battle of not letting it control you but rather you learning to control it.

I laugh when I hear people talk about how “The Bear” is a sure thing winner for Best Comedy Series and that it’s such a lock nothing whatsoever can derail it. Ha! Ha I say! Oh, it’s naturally the heavy favorite with its 23 nominations and has remained the overwhelming frontrunner clear through Emmy season, all right. In the Gold Derby combined Emmy odds, it’s running away with this race. The same is true of ““Shōgun” for drama after its giant haul of 25 Emmy bids. And nothing can beat “Baby Reindeer” for Best Limited Series, right? Jessica Gunning (“Baby Reindeer”) is a shoo-in for limited supporting actress, isn’t she? And no one could possibly beat Jamie Lee Curtis (“The Bear”) for comedy guest actress – could they?
But if Emmy history has taught us anything, it’s that upsets happen, even when it comes to shows and people considered locks.

It’s back to school time, at least where TV is concerned, and we couldn’t be more excited. While the season premiere of ABC‘s Emmy-winning Abbott Elementary is still a month away, FX calls a very different sort of class into session with the wonderfully irreverent English Teacher, starring and created by Brian Jordan Alvarez (M3GAN). The high school classroom is a minefield in this smart, biting comedy, featuring Alvarez (Jack’s dishy husband in the Will & Grace reboot) as Evan Marquez, an embattled teacher in a suburb of Austin, Texas. Evan is openly gay, but “not that proud,” he quips. Tina Rowden/FX Evan’s pride regularly gets bruised: from a meek conflict-averse principal (the hilarious Enrico Colantoni) who has no one’s back; from hypercritical parents — one has him investigated for kissing his then-boyfriend in class — and from easily triggered students. In one of the funniest episodes,...

Matthew McConaughey collaborated with Woody Harrelson for the hit HBO anthology series True Detective. Although they both enjoyed their time on the show, they have vastly different opinions about reprising their roles.
Woody Harrelson wouldn’t want to tarnish his ‘True Detective’ legacy Woody Harrelson | Axelle/Bauer-Griffin/FilmMagic
Harrelson returned to the world of television when he played detective Martin Hart in True Detective. But doing a television show was somewhat unfamiliar territory for McConaughey. Still, the movie star was drawn to True Detective because of its script. Additionally, television was in the midst of a golden age with shows like Game of Thrones and Breaking Bad rivaling and perhaps surpassing cinema. This made the notion of doing a television series only more appealing McConaughey.
At first, McConaughey was tapped to play Martin Hart. But he grew too attached to detective Rust Cohle, who was Hart’s introspective but solemn partner.

Alexi Hawley’s new hostage recovery series “The Envoy” has landed at Hulu, TheWrap has learned.
Hailing from Lionsgate Television, where Hawley has an overall deal, “The Envoy” is now in development at the Disney-owned streamer. As part of the deal, ABC Signature, a part of Disney TV Studios, will also produce the series, though Lionsgate Television will serve as the lead producer.
The news comes over two months after the project was announced to be in development at Lionsgate Television, with Hawley onboard to to develop and produce the series.
“The Envoy” is inspired by Adam Ciralsky’s Vanity Fair article “Take No Prisoners,” which was published in May and was subsequently optioned by Lionsgate. The piece centers on U.S. special envoy for hostage affairs Roger D. Carstens and his team, who have worked to release 70 American hostages over the last four years, whom Ciralsky spent a year observing.

Fargo and The Handmaid’s Tale producer Warren Littlefield predicts that the turmoil in the global TV industry won’t end for another two years.
During an interview at the Edinburgh TV Festival, the former NBC President of Entertainment was commenting on how to survive as an indie producer, and he gave an assessment that many are expecting the current commissioning downturn to end faster than it will.
“The difficulty now is that fewer things are getting made,” he said. “A lot of people are saying, ‘Stay alive ‘til ‘25.’ I think we’re probably two years out from getting through this particular challenging time – two years from seeing the end of the tunnel.”
While he acknowledged that streamers and networks are ordering shows at a slower rate than in the past, Littlefield said the fact that streaming shows usually are released in full was a positive step on from the network cancellation model.

Going into this year’s Emmy nominations, Mary Lou Belli figured she was unlikely to receive her third consecutive directing nomination for the BET sitcom “The Ms. Pat Show.” Emmy rules stipulate that one of the six nominations would go to a multi-camera show, the kind of live-in-front-of-a-studio-audience production that had been responsible for much of the classic comedy in the history of television. But one of the other multi-cam directors on the ballot was James Burrows, the undisputed king of the genre and by far the most nominated comedy director in Emmy history.
“I said to my friends, ‘I’m not getting it this year, it’s going to Jimmy,’” Belli said, laughing.
But to her shock, it didn’t go to Jimmy. Instead, Belli landed her third consecutive nomination for comedy directing, making her only the second woman to ever score three in a row in the category.

Are you searching for a new comedy to enjoy? Hulu may have the perfect one for you! Here are five things to know about Hulu’s upcoming Mid-Century Modern.
It wasn’t long ago that we learned David Kohan and Max Mutchnick, Nathan Lee Graham, and Linda Lavin. Directing the series we have James Burrows. The story, which is set to be told in a multi-cam format, follows a small group of best friends who decide to live their “golden years” together in Palm Springs. The pals, described by Deadline as “gay gentlemen of a certain age” are portrayed by Lane, Bomer, and Graham. As for Linda Lavin, she will take on the role of Lane character’s mother, who will also be living with them. The synopsis finishes off with:
It sounds like a light-hearted comedy, but I’m sure it will feature a few hard-hitting, and emotional moments.

Matt Bomer has deemed his new Hulu sitcom, Mid-Century Modern, the “spiritual cousin” to The Golden Girls. Initially branded a reboot of the hit eighties series that ran for seven seasons, Matt is clearing up the misconceptions. So, what will differentiate his show yet what are the similarities that cannot be ignored? Keep reading for more details.
Matt Bomer’s New Hulu Sitcom ‘Spiritual Cousin’ Of The Golden Girls
Despite having gone off the air over thirty years ago, The Golden Girls is an iconic sitcom that still lives on today. There are pop-ups, endless merchandise, marathons, cosplay, and so much more. The four ladies live on because they are quirky, spunky, relatable, and have so much sass. For years, diehard fans have hoped that maybe the show would get a second life. In some way, Sex and the City did that with younger women but it was not quite the same.

Will & Grace creators Max Mutchnick and David Kohan are officially back in the sitcom business.
Hulu has ordered to series Mid-Century Modern from the duo, who will executive produce alongside Ryan Murphy. The multicamera project stars Nathan Lane and Matt Bomer, who will also executive produce. Nathan Lee Graham and Linda Lavin also star.
The series order for Mid-Century Modern, produced by 20th Television, comes less than two months after Hulu ordered a pilot for the show — an unusually quick turnaround for a streaming service.
Here is the logline, followed by character descriptions: “The series follows three best friends — gay gentlemen of a certain age — who, after an unexpected death, decide to spend their golden years living together in Palm Springs where the wealthiest one lives with his mother. As a chosen family, they prove that no matter how hard things get, there’s always someone around to remind you...

Image Source Amazon You can add A Different World to the list of old shows that are getting a new generational reboot. Just as Frasier, The Conners (formerly Roseanne), Will & Grace, and Quantum Leap all returned more than a decade after their original finales, there are reports that Netflix is working on a new version of A Different World, focusing on the child of two original characters — Whitley Gilbert and Dwayne Wayne — as she spends her college years at her parents’ alma mater, Hillman College. Though it hasn’t been determined whether Jasmine Guy (who played Whitley) will be part of the new show, it wouldn’t surprise us to see her join the cast. We’ve spoken to her many times over the years about the show, and she’s always expressed a great deal of pride about her time on A Different World and what the show meant to so many people.

Film/TV actor and longtime star of the online queer comedy world Brian Jordan Alvarez stands accused of serious misbehavior by a former collaborator ahead of the release of his FX comedy series English Teacher.
Alvarez, who played recurring roles in TV shows such as Jane the Virgin, Will & Grace and Get Shorty, rose to the top of the internet humor A-list in 2016 after creating, writing, directing and starring in the critically acclaimed five-part web series The Gay and Wondrous Life of Caleb Gallor. On Alvarez’ absurdist queer comedy series, actor Jon Ebeling played Billy, one of the six central characters in Caleb Gallo. On Wednesday, just weeks before FX will debut Alvarez’ biggest project to date as his self-created, self-starred education comedy series English Teacher eyes a two-part premiere on September 2nd, Ebeling has come forward with unsettling allegations against his former director and co-star in an Instagram...
