- It is heavily implied that a character is a drug user, presumably opium. A syringe is placed in a box as the character then wipes blood away from a collection of hole punctures in his arm. This is a brief scene. No needle entry is seen.
- Many of the male characters smoke tobacco. The character of George Grossmith, played by Martin Savage, is seen injecting himself with opium in his dressing room. The character of Leonora Braham (Shirley Henderson) is shown being warned against drunkenness, and is visibly drunk in the last scene.
