Kurdish militia vs. Turkish Soldier
opoyraz25 March 2005
Warning: Spoilers
The Turkish soldier (Tarik Tarcan) was given a mission that he had to find a Kurdish group trying to pass the Cilo Mountains in South-East region of Turkey. During the engrossing pursue, soldiers saw the group but the leader of the soldiers' ordered his soldiers not to fire before calling them to accept the capturing. Unfortunately, one of the soldiers could not stop himself and fire against the Kurdish group. In a few minutes a huge avalanche fell towards the two groups and both sides lost a lot of man. The only survivor from the soldiers side is the leader and a girl and a man from the Kurdish side. The woman was seriously wounded and not able to walk by herself. It's a short but a nice movie taking about the Kurdish problem of Turkey in east that takes place from 80's. Although there are some ridiculous film-capturing mistakes, especially during the avalanche session but it's worth to see. (6/10)

Let There Be Light

Warning: Spoilers
Let There Be Light or in Turkish, Isiklar sonmesin is a movie of reaching an understanding point between two people. The movie opens with a candle flickering in the wind and then two pairs of hands come out and save the candle from going out. This scene is the rest if the movie. You'll see throughout the movie fire and light in many forms that ultimately bring Seydo and Murat together. The plot is simple enough, Captain Murat is sent out to stop the Kurdish resistance from crossing the border. Once the Turkish army catches up with the Kurdish resistance though an antsy Turkish soldier fires against orders. During the fight an avalanche occurs killing just about everyone, but Seydo, Murat and Zozan. Because there is a blizzard approaching the three end up sharing shelter and fire. They begin to be able to tolerate each other though Zozan and Seydo are planning to lose Murat. After another night in a cave together Seydo carries Zozan out and leaves Murat. When Murat catches up with them a life changing event happens. After the event they carry on to the nearby village, though Seydo tries to lose Murat again. Once in the village Seydo starts a fire and then Murat shows up. They fight only to be broken up by an old man who has stayed in the village. The man informs them that "they" burned the village but that he is staying for "something human...so life can begin again." The old man then goes on to say he has to light the fires and lamps running outside to demonstrate his efforts. As the old man was talking a group of Turkish solders had been advancing on the village. The solders begin to fire upon the village after the old man exits. At this point a little girl, Dilan, comes running out of the hut, followed closely by Murat and Seydo, the two grab her and lift her up. This is the ending scene. The two men who had been fighting holding the future of Turkish and Kusdish relations and keeping it safe. Overall Isiklar sonmesin is an extremely touching movie that all people who are studying Turkish film should watch. Just watch out for bad subtitling as the disturbers did a very poor job.
