A Hare-Breadth Finish is yet another version of Aesop's The Tortoise and the Hare. In this one, a dog policeman has brought the hare to the station for booking. The hare tells his story of how he tries to once again beat the tortoise in the relay race. First, he digs a hole six feet under and covers it with grass to bury the tortoise alive. Tortoise walks out. Then hare runs ahead on a bridge so his shadow can alert him when tortoise starts to cross causing hare to cut bridge. Tortoise falls but walks out of shell before it breaks! Then after landing safely on ground gets another shell out of suitcase. Then hare sends him in package to Hawaii. Airplane sends tortoise back quickly wearing hula skirt and lei! Then hare tries to blow tortoise up. I forgot how tortoise got out of that one. Hare notices tortoise close to finish line so he hurries but then that dog cop we saw at the beginning stops him just as tortoise crosses the line! While it's not as inventive as the Bugs Bunny-Cecil Turtle cartoons at Warners, for a Paul Terry it's quite amusing and I love Philip Sweib's score for the tortoise. Because it's a Terrytoon it might be rare to find but it's worth seeking at YouTube if you're a fan!
