Hollywood’s most notable bombs are — sadly — just as well-known as its biggest hits, a factor that a new book joyously celebrates.
From British film critic Tim Robey, “Box Office Poison” digs up the dirt on some of cinema’s wildest misfires, from grand follies to misunderstood masterpieces, disastrous sequels to catastrophic literary adaptations, going behind the scenes to examine how they ended careers, bankrupted studios and changed film history.
Among the features in Robey’s crosshairs are David Lynch’s “Dune,” plus “Speed 2: Cruise Control,” “Gigli,” “Catwoman,” “Pan” and — of course — “Cats.”
In this exclusive extract from the book, being released by Hanover Square Press in the U.S. on Nov. 5, it’s the turn of the swashbuckling catastrophe that was Renny Harlin and Geana Davis’ “Cutthroat Island.” Costing upwards of $115 million to make, the watery flop sank almost without a trace in 1995, earning just $18.5 million globally and...

Josh Gates has taken viewers everywhere from a lost city in the remote jungles of Cambodia to diving into the Caribbean waters for sunken treasure. Now the adventurer has set his eyes on helping unseal a long-buried tomb with remains of ancient skeletons. The historic discovery beneath the iconic Treasury building in Petra, Jordan is chronicled as part of the new season of Gates’ Expedition Unknown. It was 2,000 years ago when the Nabataean Kingdom carved an entire city by hand into the walls of a desert canyon, placing at its center the magnificent structure known as “The Treasury.” Made famous for housing the Holy Grail as seen in Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade, the true purpose of The Treasury remains a mystery. This pursuit for answers was part of a joint Jordanian/American project led by the American Center of Research’s (Acor) Executive Director and Professor Pearce Paul Creasman.

J. Michael Straczynski's "Babylon 5" began its life as a two-hour TV movie called "Babylon 5: The Gathering" which aired on February 22, 1993. There was some controversy about the series, however, as Straczynski pitched his space station series to Paramount as early as 1989. Paramount turned Straczynski down, and he took his series to Warner Bros., who approved. Suspiciously, only two months after Warner announced "Babylon 5," Paramount announced their own space station series, "Star Trek: Deep Space Nine." In a Tweet from 2018, Straczynski claimed that Paramount "put their show into high gear, spending four times what we did so they'd make it to air first." Indeed, "Deep Space Nine" first aired on January 3, 1999, beating "Babylon 5" by a month and a half. No legal action was taken against Paramount, but there has been a certain amount of bitterness ever since.

Indy is back, this time in a new video game from MachineGames and Bethesda called Indiana Jones and the Great Circle. Set within the same timeline as the movie, the game sees a young Indiana Jones (voiced by Troy Baker) begin a new adventure that will take him from his desk at Marshall College to the Vatican, the Forgotten Temples of the Sukhotai, the Himalayas, and back to Egypt for the first time since Raiders of the Lost Ark.
In fact, Great Circle takes place just a year after the events of the original movie, but before The Last Crusade. In other words, the game will finally show us what Indy was up to in the two-year gap between Raiders, which is set in 1936, and Crusade, which covers 1938. 1937 is a year in Indy’s life that has never been explored onscreen. The goal, according to MachineGames co-founder Jerk Gustafsson in an interview with EW,...

The winners of this year’s recipients of the Walter Cronkite Awards had a common theme: Combating misinformation.
So when award sponsor USC Annenberg’s Norman Lear Center held a National Press Club luncheon for the honorees last week, there was a bit of reminder of the stakes: During the ceremony news unfolded of the unsealing of former President Donald Trump’s federal indictment.
Many of the winners reported on Trump and his false claims of a stolen 2020 election, something that he has repeated during his current election campaign. He’s also called the indictment itself the “boxes hoax.”
Martin Kaplan, director of The Norman Lear Center, said, “Disinformation is an apt focus in particular for the Cronkite award, not only because it feels like disinformation is everywhere all at once, but because the namesake of this award is Walter Cronkite” who was known as “the most trusted man in America.

If you went to the movies in 1989 you might have heard Indiana Jones growl the line “it belongs in a museum.” You’ll hear him say it again in The Dial of Destiny (premiering this week at a notably geriatric Cannes Film Festival) but you won’t get his enemy’s timely response: “So do you.” Harrison Ford was 49 years old back then, in a film called The Last Crusade––which it, of course, was not. Ford returned as Jones in 2008 for Steven Spielberg’s Kingdom of the Crystal Skull and now, miraculously, once again for director James Mangold’s first swing at the franchise: an effects-drenched, largely amiable swan song for the whip-cracking explorer that never really lives up to its hero’s adventurous spirit.

At the end of Steven Spielberg's 1989 film "Indiana Jone and the Last Crusade," Henry "Indiana" Jones, Jr. (Harrison Ford), his father (Sean Connery), Sallah (John Rhys-Davis), and Marcus Brody (Denholm Elliott) have escaped the now-collapsed temple where the Holy Grail rests. Breathing a sigh of relief, they mount horses and choose to simply go home, literally riding off into the sunset. It seemed that was going to be the final word on Indiana Jones; it was his last Crusade. But, just like "Freddy's Dead: The Final Nightmare," "Friday the 13th: The Final Chapter," "Jason Goes to Hell: The Final Friday," "Star Trek V: The Final Frontier," and "The Final Destination," the promise of "Crusade" being Indy's final adventure was broken. In 2008, Spielberg returned for "Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull," a film that the director seemed painfully uninterested in.

That English-language cinema has no parallel for the Garrel family is equal testament to their legacy and our shallow, piddling culture. While Philippe Garrel’s decades-long filmmaking career––which began with political documentation and silent features, but now represents modern cinema’s best studies of romance and longing––just added to its corpus his excellent The Plough, starring progeny Louis Garrel, Esther Garrel, and Lena Garrel, Louis is about to see the U.S. debut of The Innocent, his fourth feature in writing-directing-starring capacities.
If it barely resembles his father’s films––still attuned to human behavior, but packaging observations inside madcap scenarios Garrel proudly calls “completely unbelievable”––that’s all the better: watching The Innocent suggests less an heir to Philippe Garrel than Dino Risi or Pierre Etaix.

It would've been massive. It would've been bloody. It could've been glorious. Instead, it remains unproduced.
Paul Verhoeven's "Crusade" is one of the most tantalizingly unmade films of the 1990s. Babylon 5 is poised to take flight again.
Original series creator Michael Straczynski is developing an update of the iconic 1993-98 series that will be a complete revamp of the original format.
The new direction is set to follow John Sheridan (originally played by Bruce Boxleitner), an Earthforce officer with a mysterious background, who is assigned to Babylon 5.
Babylon 5 is a five-mile-long space station in neutral space, a port of call for travelers, smugglers, corporate explorers, and alien diplomats at a time of uneasy peace and the constant threat of war.
The mysterious arrival triggers a life beyond anything he could have imagined, as an exploratory Earth company accidentally triggers a conflict with a civilization a million years ahead of us, putting Sheridan and the rest of the B5 crew in the line of fire as the last, best hope for the survival of the human race.

The original Babylon 5 debuted in 1993 and presented a future-history story covering the years 2257-2262, with each year corresponding to one season. Paul Verhoeven has made a career out of pushing cinematic boundaries, particularly when it comes to depicting sex or violence on screen.
In films like “Basic Instinct” and “Showgirls,” he battled the ratings boards, while blockbusters like “Total Recall” and “Robocop” popularized R-rated action. All that changed in the aughts, as Hollywood abandoned those projects, sanded down the edges of commercial movies, and replaced ice-pick wielding serial killers with caped superheroes that appeal to a-all-four quadrants. But Verhoeven endured, turning his attention to European films such as “The Black Book” and “Elle” and earning the critical respect that often evaded him in the 1990s. He’s back in Cannes this year with “Benedetta,” the story of a lesbian affair between nuns in 17th century Italy. The film will be released in the U.S. by IFC Films.

Because of this, we have our first set photos from the Indiana Jones 5 production and, while they don’t tell us much about what we can expect from the upcoming film, they a) do make us very excited that this thing is finally happening and b) still get us theorizing about the details of Indy’s next adventure.

Much like the reveal of Diablo 2 Resurrection, many Blizzard fans were anticipating the eventual release of The Burning Crusade Classic as the follow-up to WoW Classic. It seemed inevitable that Blizzard would revisit the first WoW expansion following “vanilla” WoW‘s recent success.
And yet, there’s something undeniably magical about the confirmation that we’re this much closer to the essential re-release of WoW: The Burning Crusade. Not only was Tbc the first of many expansions in WoW history, it is what many consider to be one of the best eras in the history of one of the best video game franchises ever.
So as we prepare to dive back into Burning Crusade, let’s also look back at the Burning Crusade moments that we can’t wait to relive.

In the mid-nineties, star Arnold Schwarzenegger and director Paul Verhoeven were riding high. Arnold was arguably the world's biggest star at the time, while he had one of his biggest hits ever teaming with Verhoeven on the classic Total Recall, which was produced by Carolco Pictures. The two then pitched the studio on doing a massive, big-budget epic about the Crusades, appropriately titled, Crusade, which got so far into pre-production that the cast, which would include Jennifer Connelly,…...

Big hair, shoulder pads, neon clothes. Everything seemed bigger and brighter in the 1980s, and the movies of that era reflect that. And the greatest of those 10 years turned out to be the last one: 1989 brought us “Batman,” “Dead Poets Society,” “Do the Right Thing,” “Driving Miss Daisy,” “Field of Dreams,” “The Little Mermaid,” “Sex, Lies and Videotape,” “Steel Magnolias,” “When Harry Met Sally” and a whole bunch of excellent sequels. Let’s take a look back at the 30th anniversary of the 1989 film year.
Many productions that fared well at the box office consisted of sequels and the big blockbuster action films audiences hungered for. Out of the top ten grossing movies of 1989, four were sequels and three spawned sequels later on. Additionally, five of these films – “Batman”, “Last Crusade”,”Gbii”, “LW2” and “Honey” – were released between Memorial day weekend and July 4th, breaking box office records and setting...

Even the most beautiful and exotic locations can be home to the most hellish horrors on Earth. That's what a real estate team discovers the hard way when they descend into a World War II bunker in Gehenna: Where Death Lives, and with the new horror film enjoying a well-received film festival run, we caught up with director Hiroshi Katagiri and executive producer Saik Meng Kee for our latest Q&A feature to discuss funding the movie on Kickstarter, working with the legendary Lance Henriksen and Doug Jones, and a chance encounter with The Texas Chain Saw Massacre cinematographer Daniel Pearl during filming on the island of Tinian.
Thanks for taking the time to answer some questions for us, Hiroshi, and congratulations on your new film, Gehenna: Where Death Lives. How and when did you come up with the idea for the movie?

There are plenty of interesting directions a return to the Babylon 5 universe could take. Here are a few suggestions...
I read somewhere that J.M. Straczynski writes every day. That’s not surprising given his extensive body of work for television, motion pictures, novels and comics. He is best known for Babylon 5, of course. I remember what a lot of people used to say about Babylon 5, “How much can happen on a space station?” Well, a lot actually! And after five seasons of the original series, a bunch of made-for-tv movies and a couple of spin-offs, there are still plenty of stories left to tell.
That is why I was excited recently to read that Joe (apparently, he thinks you’re cool if you just call him Joe) was going back to work on Babylon 5. My excitement soon turned to dread when I found out that...

With four months of digital success under their belt, Archie Comics brings their superhero stable back to comic shops with the first print issue of New Crusaders, in comic shops this week. Each issue collecting the four weekly “acts” of the digital release, the comic is a response to the many requests from readers who wanted to see a traditional edition as well. Archie has done a good job of it, with several special covers and some extra bonuses not seen in the digital release.
Archie Comics superheroes have had a long and varied publishing history. They premiered in 1939, enjoyed a a re-emergence in the 60s, another in the 80s, a couple revivals that never got out of the gate, and two attempted revivals by DC Comics, the woefully underappreciated Impact imprint from the 90s (helmed by our own Mike Gold), and the more recent Red Circle line which started...

I’ve got two words that come to mind with this week’s Chuck: Gary Cole. Two months ago, I had never seen an episode of Babylon 5. I had heard of it, and I was a fan of a lot of the comic book writings of the Babylon 5 creator, J. Michael Straczynski but I had no desire whatsoever to watch the show. There wasn’t any hatred of the show or any real reasoning behind the fact that I hadn’t seen it. It was just one of those things that I hadn’t gotten around to in my life. There are plenty of things in this world that I haven’t gotten around to doing yet, and I have to be honest when I say that shortening that list by watching Babylon 5 wasn’t very high on my list of priorities.
But….if I’ve learned nothing else, I’ve learned that I should listen to the advice of my friends.

Even though "Lost" will be ending in a few short weeks, Daniel Dae Kim would like to stay in the water as Namor the Sub Mariner — Marvel's first mutant.
“Living in Hawaii, I’m always in the water," explained Kim during an interview with Ugo, "And I think Sub-Mariner looks Asian. So I feel like if there’s any one I could play, it would be him. I’ve met with Marvel about a few other things, but if and when it becomes appropriate — sure, if they’d have me.”
Prior to starring on "Lost," Kim appeared in an impressive array of genre TV series including "Crusade," "Angel," "Star Trek: Enterprise," "Charmed" and "24." Kim has also voiced Metron of the New Gods in the "Justice League Unlimited" animated series. His next role will be as Detective Chin Ho Kelly in a potential revival of "Hawaii Five-o."

While many theater-goers cringe upon witnessing the blatant use of product placement in any given film, The Joneses is a landmark achievement in that it is the first film to make product placement a necessary component of its story-line. Written and Directed by talented newcomer Derrick Borte, The Joneses is a unique social commentary tale about an American town overwhelmed by the excitement of consumerism.
The cast of Derrick Borte's "The Joneses" (2010).

Both Hawaii Five-o and Lost are being filmed in (not surprisingly) Hawaii. Kim has played Jin Kwon for six seasons of the latter. ABC's mystery drama recently began airing its final run of episodes. Kim will star on Hawaii Five-o for CBS Studios.
The personnel behind Kim's new gig include Fringe co-creators Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci, as well as CSI: NY executive producer and co-showrunner Peter Lenkov.

British actor Edward Woodward starred as the ill-fated Sgt. Howie, a repressed and religious police officer, in Anthony Shaffer’s occult thriller The Wicker Man in 1973. Sent to the remote Scottish island of Summerisle to search for a missing girl, he becomes enmeshed in an arcane pagan ritual that results in his own sacrifice in a burning wicker effigy to ensure a bountiful harvest. Christopher Lee co-starred as Lord Summerisle, and Britt Ekland, Diane Cilento, and Ingrid Pitt were featured as enticing pagan ladies.
Woodward was born in Croydon, England, on June 1, 1930. He attended the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art, and made his professional stage debut in 1946. A Shakespearean stage actor, he also appeared frequently in films and television from the early 1960s. He was featured in episodes of The Saint, The Baron, Mystery and Imagination, and Sherlock Holmes, and was Auguste Dupin in a 1968 production of Poe’s The Murders in the Rue Morgue.

J. Michael Straczynski is no stranger to genre writing in fact if you hadn't heard of him before The Changeling hit theaters last month there's a good chance you've at least seen his work on TV. Though he's probably most known as the creator of Babylon 5, Straczynski was also responsible for bringing Showtime's short lived apocalyptic drama Jeremiah to the screen and has written for The Twilight Zone and Crusade. He wrote Ninja Assassin for the Wachowski's and is about to become famous as "that guy who adapted Max Brooks' World War Z" into an epic screenplay (review here) that's about to begin production under the guidance of Quantum of Solace director Marc Forster.
Recently, MTV got a word in edgewise and asked the writer about World War Z. Here's what he had to say:

Screenwriter J. Michael Straczynski is set to write the remake of Fred Wilcox’s 1956 sci-fi classic “Forbidden Planet” for Warner Bros.
The Hollywood Reporter says Warner acquired the project from DreamWorks, where David Twohy was attached to direct.
In the original, a space crew from Earth is sent to a distant planet to check up on a colony of scientists. Shortly after their arrival, they find a scientist and his daughter who survived a cruel monster roaming the planet.
Straczynski, who most recently penned Clint Eastwood’s drama “Changeling,” is no stranger to the sci-fi genre. He co-created “Babylon 5” and wrote many of the show’s episodes. His credits also include “Crusade” and several episodes of “The Twilight Zone.”
Straczynski also co-wrote James McTeigue’s upcoming action flick “Ninja Assassin,” which Joel Silver is producing. Silver is also on board to develop the “Forbidden Planet” update.
