Well, at least it has strippers.

What a strange little movie. The plot has something to do with the female lead being "framed" as an alcoholic and drug abuser. Why? I never figured it out. There are a few scenes that take place in a strip club. The women are nice but not great. What made this so weird for me was how the dubbed dialog was written. Let me give you an idea. Say you wanted to film a conversation about getting from the bar to a Braves game. Start by filming person X and Y talking about the best route. Now do the same thing again but this time it is its between persons Y and Z. Now editing everything together but cutting person Y totally out of the movie. You get two people talking to each other about the same thing, but the two sides of the conversations don't sync up and are just a little different from each other. There is a lot of scenes like this, even when both characters are in the same room (or shower ;)) . I think your safe to skip this one unless you like dancers from the 60's in black and white.

Exploitative thriller is laughably amateurish

Warning: Spoilers
It's worth noting that for a cheaply made exploitation piece, KITTEN IN A CAGE actually has a plot of sorts, which automatically makes it better than something like THE WARM, WARM BED which I watched recently. Saying that, this is still a very poor film by all accounts; the worst problem with it is that it was shot silently with the dialogue dubbed in post production. The dubbers make no attempt to match the lip movements of the actors so you have a weird experience from the start.

The main character is played by Miriam Eliot and starts off being chased through the woods by the authorities. There's some interest in this low rent stuff and the naturalistic style, combined with black and white photography, reminded me of NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD in places. Unfortunately the goodwill soon dissipates as the story goes nowhere, dialogue heavy and badly acted as it is. Eliot falls in with random guys, a couple of the guys fight, there are more chase scenes, and an interminable sequence in one of the most run-down strip clubs you'll ever see.

The sexploitation stuff mainly comes during this strip club moment, as a series of actresses strip off and gyrate in the most bored-looking way imaginable. Eliot is also nude on occasion, most notably in a lesbian sequence randomly shoe-horned into the story. It must have been cutting edge at the time, but feels silly and passe watching it now. The climax fizzles away rather than excites. Overall, this is a real waste of time.

absolutely nothing to recommend this VERY bad kitty

Thanks to extremely bad re-dubbing, and a meandering slim plot that is sciztophenic in it's execution and never explains anything, this late '60's black and white exploitation film about a girl who escapes from the loony bin can be and is an embarrassing mess and quite a chore to watch. I dare you to know anything more about this film after watching it than you did before you popped it into the DVD player (maybe even less so) Better yet, don't watch the film (and man do I use that term loosely) at all and save yourself your precious time, hard-earned money, and your cherished sanity.

My Grade: F

Eye Candy: Linda Boyce offers T&A; June Roberts shows full frontal ; and Miriam Eliot bares all

Something Weird's DVD Extras: 4 Vintage soft-core film loops ("Friendly Kitten", "pretty Kitty from Kansas City", "Young and Kittenish", "Kute Kitty"); 6 and a half minute gallery of Harry Novak exploitation art with accompanying soundtrack; 10 minute photo gallery slide-show; Theatrical Trailer; And Trailers for "the Fat Black Pussycat", "house of Cats", "the Pink Pussy where Sin Lives", "Platinum Pussycat", "Pussycat Paradise & A trip around the World", "3 Loves of a Psycho Cat" & "The Girl from Pussycat" (the last of which is also on the double-feature DVD)

"Well, Bill, as the Expression Goes - Thanks for Taking care of my Girl"

A girl is being chased from an asylum to open up Kitten in the Cage, and that is probably the best part of this film. I will say; however, that this movie does have some laughs of the unintentional kind and that made it easier to sit through. The dubbing is atrocious. The sex scenes are non-existent and the few nude scenes are of hardened strippers in totally unfufilling glory. Lead actress Miriam Eliot is so bad she made me laugh out loud quite a few times. She has absolutely no sense of timing, looks like she is reading cue cards half of the time, and is flat with regard to any talent other than showing off(to a very stingy degree I might add) her fairly decent body. But she is one of the better thespians and that bodes poorly for you the viewer. The other girl playing her stripper friend that allows her to shack up with her isn't even acting it seems. She has no conviction in what she says in anything. I swear I could find more talent at a grocery store any given time. She is blessed physically though. The male leads are hoots as they all look like they must have been friends of the director and producer. They don't act either nor say anything convincingly. The fight between the boss guy and the boyfriend looked so hokey and phony that all you will be able to do is laugh at just how bad everything in this film is. The story is convoluted but does try. It has something to do with gems, the mob, and a little mermaid. But truly I haven't seen acting this bad, and I watch a lot of bad movies, in quite some time.

Warning: watching this movie may be hazardous to your I.Q.

Warning: Spoilers
I love "bad" movies so I have seen quite a few. This one could be the worst ever – and not in a good way. I think I may be a little stupider after viewing this film – I wish I hadn't.

The good: There is a strip scene with a nicely stacked girl trying to dance the boogaloo. She was unintentionally funny and a pleasure to look at.

The bad: is almost too much to mention. Clearly they shot the movie without audio and tried to dub it back in later. They leave out a lot of the dialog. You see conversations with words coming out of the speaker's mouth for one sentence, and then nothing coming out the next. It's so distracting that the movie is hard to follow.

The plot makes no sense. Even if it did, it is foolish. Things happen and then are immediately dropped. Someone gets shot on the beach and the police just happen to walk by moments later. They are concerned about a little statue and it just happens to be sitting on a rock on the shore.

All of this would be worth it if the exploitation aspects of the movie were up to snuff. They aren't. The sex is nearly non-existent. The nudity is poor (with the above exception).

By 60's standards this movie may have been cool. It's not now. This film is a waste of a spot in your rental queue.
