Gobots were first, not Transformers
spacemaster8318 September 2016
The Challenge of the Gobots debuted before (Sept, 8th 1984) the Transformers series (Sept, 17th 1984). Transformers is great, but give credit where credit is due. The Gobots series was presented on American television first, plain and simple. Haters should check their facts before they claim copyright infringement and all the other petty charges that have been leveled at Hanna-Barbera for the Gobots series over the last 30 years.

Transformers was not even anything like the Gobots and vice versa. Who ever said you can't have two, or five, or eighty shows about transforming robots? The fact that people still argue over who did what first is so pointless. Things do not happen in a vacuum, ideas, innovations, and inventions happen spontaneously within the cultural zeitgeist, few if any are ever planned.

Besides, both American cartoon series were based on a mega-popular line of Japanese toys from the 1970's and several Japanese anime series from the early 1980's. Tonka and Hasbro were simply adapting Japanese toy design, animation, and stylizing to American audiences. Bottom line, one is not better than the other, however, in America Gobots came first and in large part paved the way for Transformers to take American children by storm.

Mighty Robots on the Go
hellraiser713 June 2022
This is another under the radar gem. I was a kid from the 80's and yeah I remember the toy line of the "Go Bots" which were really cool and actually came out first before the "Transformers" rolled in. They were a big hit at the time, I remember those commercials which were cool, then again most to almost all commercials based on 80's toy lines were cool. One of the things I really love was that mobile base they had, though sadly unfortunately I don't have a copy. But other than that, I always had a think for transforming vehicles to robots it was by its nature having two toys at once. I honestly never heard of this show, until I caught it on the "USA Cartoon Express" and I thought it was good for what it was. Sadly, this toy line as time went on has became forgotten just as this show has.

Yeah, its true that this show's storyline does take its cues from "Transformers" as the good bots are fighting for freedom to save their home planet and ours, its nothing new but it's all done right and were all really in it for the action and the robots anyway. Also, this show has a different feel from "Transformers" as that show was a little more series and even dark, this show is a little more light in tone which makes watching both series all the more interesting because you can watch them depending on what mood your in; If you feel like watching something serious then you have "Transformers" but if you feel like taking a load off then you can see "Go Bots" The animation is good by Hanna Barbara standards, it's not as crisp and detailed as you would see from "Transformers" but it's still good enough all the same. Really like the details on the Go Bots along with the transformation sequences though sadly there isn't any sound effect for the transformations, which would have enhanced the effect. Even like the action the choreography is well done, from seeing them use their lasers and transformations to their advantages. One of the things that make the action stand out is that they each had secondary abilities, from Leader One a force field, Cy Kill scanner power, etc. That I thought was kind of cool giving each of the bots another edge to them and raising the stakes in the battles more.

The music is good/decent, there is an animated intro theme that is decent if not memorable but at least has the right feel of getting you on the go for robot vehicular assault action.

The character is all good/decent, they each have their unique personality and there is a pretty good voice cast for the characters one of them Frank Welker and Peter Cullen which is ironic considering both did the "Transformers" franchise. Even certain other names that are well known as Brook Peters, Phil Hartman, Rene Arberjonois, Arthur Burghardt, etc.

For your heroes you have, "Leader One" which is cool as he's my favorite "Go Bot" as he turns into a fighter jet but also just like his color which is silver which is a cool color as that the usual trademark color for hero characters. But his character is cool, despite the archetypal strong leader but hey if it works it works.

Villains of course there's, Cy Kill is also cool even though he's the archetypal evil leader but works all the same. Really like the name which is probably one of the best names for a villain.

For number two on the villain roster is Crusher whom is the female villainous which is cool as there are always many female robot character, it was the same with "Transformers", kind of like how there is this mischievous to her which makes her have some really good lines.

Other is Turbo who is cool and my favorite character in the show, let alone voiced by one of my favorite voice actors Arthur Burghardt whom is of course well known for doing the voice of Destro on G. I. Joe. It was cool hearing him as a good guy as that's not a role he plays a lot but shows he's capable in that role. He's pretty much a bit of who Jazz is in "Transformers" as he' has sort of that 70's funk persona but with a deeper voice and with just as many snazzier lines. However, what I like about him is that he's the most aggressive, like that he's not afraid to take action when needed and doesn't take crap from anyone.

Unfortunately, this show has a couple of nails on the road that keep the Go Bots to go the distance. One is that the show it's not quite that memorable, which is strange to say though not really considering the toy line has become forgotten. Mainly because the ongoing plot doesn't advance enough, I know that most animated shows and even live action shows back then didn't have linear developing storytelling at the time. But I felt that for a property as this that could of really helped a lot give the plot and the actions of the Go-Bots more weight.

Also, the show also suffers a fundamental problem most TV shows sometimes suffer, as it went a little on the wrong track by the second season. It wasn't bad I thought it was decent as there are some good episodes to be had though not enough; it's just some of the writing was just kind of off as there were some plotlines that were out of place and silly (in a not so good way) even by animated show standards. This unfortunately killed the chance of another season where "Go Bots" fans were robbed of seeing a few more robots added to the roster and raising the stakes in the war. Sadly, this will only happen in the realm of fan fiction and even comic/graphic novels if a series ever gets going that is.

It would be cool if there was an animated revival of this franchise, you can make it darker, give the plotline more weight with a constant developing storyline, updated and better animation style, have a good ensemble of voice actors/well-known actors to do the voices just the works. Though sadly this may not happen as there hasn't been any plans of the toy line making a resurgence let alone the fanbase for the Go Bots isn't so big. But even if this doesn't happen personally, I'd love a comic book series out of this franchise, there was that miniseries from IDW that was good so why not pick up from there. Well, it's a thought anyway to consider.

Overall, the is a good fun 80's cartoon, it's not an animated classic (in my book anyway) as it's not on the same level as certain other beloved ones in that decade. Let alone not one of Hanna Barbara's best cartoons in their long line up but all the same the show is fun and just like the Go Bot toys themselves it's worth a test drive.

Rating: 3 stars.

Hanna barberas answer to transformers
justin-fencsak6 May 2019
The fall of 1984 was a landmark in cartoons featuring robots and humans working together. The transformers led the way, followed by voltron, then mighty orbots and finally gobots. The toys hit store shelves a year before the cartoon debuted as a five part miniseries in syndication to decent ratings before airing a full season which concluded with a theatrical movie featuring the rock lords which didn't do well at the box office compared to transformers.

This show was very good and it was never boring. There were many cool characters and the animation was very good and it had an awesome theme! This was one of the best cartoons of the 80s and one of Hanna-Barbara's best in My opinion! If you have a chance to watch the Gobots then check it out!

Hanna Barbera's version of Transformers...
justin-fencsak18 July 2010
When Go-Bots came out, it was one of two robot cartoon series that were produced by American studios based on popular Japanese robot toys. The show started off as a five-part miniseries before going on for two seasons, while its robot rival, Transformers, lasted even longer. Both robot shows even spawned their own animated movies, each with limited success. One interesting thing to note is that Hasbro would later buy the rights to Go-Bots from Tonka, since Hasbro brought the Transformers to American shores. As for the cartoon, it's robots, done Hanna-Barbera style. Frank Welker and Peter Cullen are the popular voices who also worked on TF. An underrated show.

Challenge of the robots
torillaface29 April 2020
Warning: Spoilers
Those who are expecting it to be like the Transformers will be disappointed by the animation. The story are better, but not much. The human characters are stereotypical especially the old crazy bad guy scientist. The only really interesting human character is the young black teen who is one of the few portrayals of a black teen scientists. The female gobots are not sexy as the female autobots are portrayed. It is not anime or Japanese animation. If you like Hanna Barbara cartoons, you will like it. If not, this is not a cartoon for you.

Challenge of The Gobots
Terryfan28 July 2015
Growing up I love Transformers, everything about Transformers just hold my attention.

Only a few times that I got to see Challenge Of The Gobots now I am a huge fan of Hanna Barbera cartoons and they have created some of the most memorable series ever like "Yogi Bear" and "Scooby-Doo" Gobots came out as the main challenger to the popular Transformers.

Now this is not going to be a "Transformers is better" or "Gobots is better" review it just my thoughts on the series in general.

Challenge Of The GoBots did have some interesting ideas and characters in their own right they had some good episodes of the series as well.

The two factions at war were the Good Gobots known as the Guardians lea by Leader-One, some of The Guardians members are Turbo, Scooter, Small Foot, Path Finder, Van Guard, Road Ranger,Flip Top,Rest-Q, Heat Seeker and others. They were the protagonists of the series.

The Evil Gobots known as Renegades lead by Cy-Kill, some of the Renegades are Crasher, Cop-Tur, Fitor, Loco,Fly Trap, Bad Boy, Pincher, BuggyMan, Geeper-Creeper, Vamp and others.

The human characters: Matt Hunter, Nick Burns, Allison Janmoria "A.J." Foster, General Newcastle help the Guardians. Master Renegade help the Renegades.

Challenge of the Gobots feature some good stories for the series and some of the most interesting episodes of any TV show.

The Voice acting is pretty good with the talents of Lou Richards, Frank Welker, Peter Cullen,Brock Peters,Arthur Burghardt,Marilyn Lighstone, B.J.Ward, Kelly, Ward and others each one give the Characters some interesting voice effects and that's not something easy.

And the animation of the show is pretty good as well and smooth animation.

Yes Challenge of The Gobots was a challenger to The Transformers but The Gobots did have something going for it so if you are a fan of robots then check out Challenge Of The Gobots you might be surprise

Underrated
transfan8318 January 2007
What I've seen on YouTube has confirmed my belief in the underrated nature of this show. Some of the show's elements might appear lame at first glance. One such element is character names. Making names that are puns on the character's trans-form was also done quite often in Beast Wars. Another element that has been criticized is the idea of firing lasers out of the fists. It's a good way to compensate for the toys not having guns. Many lead characters also have secondary abilities such as a lightning stomp (Crasher), forcefield (Leader-1), and mind-control powers (CyKill). There are even some things that the GoBots came up with before TFs. The best example is female robots serving as series regulars. This was in place from day one with GoBots, while the Transformers didn't implement it until season 2, and there were no recurring female robots until Arcee was introduced in the Transformers Movie. Racial diversity didn't show up in TF's until Armada introduced Carlos. This is something else GoBots had going from day 1 with the African-American A.J. Foster. You might even say the GoBots invented Powerlinking with their Power Suits. Even the comparatively lighthearted presentation may prove to be a turnoff for some, but if you liked RiD, which had a similar atmosphere, this shouldn't bother you too much. To sum things up, check this show out BEFORE you pass judgment.

You do know Gobots came out a full year before Transformers
phychosisfalls12 February 2022
This show is amazing and the original one... the Transformers what came out a year later and exists to this day was kinda a rip-off of it with better toys... This cartoon and it's toys were amazing and the toys to this show if you can find any are worth quite a bit today as no new ones were ever made and never will be... The owners of the Transformers now own this show, but they don't own the licenses to make the toys... this show is now even part of the canon...

(The Transformers) + (Hanna Barbera Cheese) = The GoBots!
Nic_hse23 October 2003
Think of Transformers with simpler stories & cartoony robot designs and you have good idea of what the GoBots are about. Hanna Barbera's influence is all over this show. I mean C'mon a robot named Scooter that transforms into a child's scooter. Only Hanna Barbera would think that this would be cool. OK it's a fine cartoon if you don't compare it to Transformers. I have to admit GoBots is probably one of Hanna Barbera's best TV shows. GoBots is a good juvenile cartoon that posed no threat to the Transformers.

Licencing from Japan to USA
darren251422 March 2023
Gobots was licenced to Tonka from Bandai who were doing the line as Machine Robo/Robo Machines/Machine Men in UK/Ireland/Europe/Japan/SE Asia/Australia/NZ. While Tonka had the North America rights. While Hasbro Licenced Transformers from Takara but Hasbro had the rights for the whole world except Japan. For GoBots which was the American branding for the Bandai Machine Robo/Robo Machine. Tonka just had the North American rights to the Bandai Machine Robo/Robo Machine line while Bandai dealt with the rest of the world Europe/Asia/Australasia. It is 2 different toy lines by 2 different companies.

An Honest Review
generationofswine2 April 2017
I don't know if you readers were ever little boys before...but I was...and I can assure you that when you are 5 you have serious--in all caps--SERIOUS debates with your friends about which is better the GoBots or the Transformers.

"Are you kidding me? The Transformers leader is a Semi-Truck...the Gobots have a an F-14 as their leader!!!!!" Or something like that.

The GoBots...The GoBots....The GoBots.

I'll be honest, I was a MASK fan. I needed that human element to relate to. Nah, just kidding, I just liked the toys more.

Anyway, it is basically the Transformers with the names changed to protect the innocent and less of a problem making the good robots into weapons of war rather than harmless trucks and little VW bugs.

Other than that...its all in the name and somehow Transformers won that serious debate.

Someone needs to make a GoBots movie just to spite Michael Bay.

i remember enjoying it
phoenix2rachelsummers20 July 2004
Even though "Transformers" is my favorite cartoon ever, I remember liking "Challenge of the GoBots" almost as much, and watching both of them on weekday afternoons after school.

The characters and the animation may have been inferior to "Transformers," but the scripts were good, arguably more consistent than those of "Transformers." Both shows even shared a few of the same writers (Don Glut, Antoni Zalewski, Reed Robbins & Peter Salas.)

Now, of course, I haven't watched GoBots for years, as it's been hard to find. In the mid-90s, a local video rental store had tapes of them, but they closed a long time ago. If I were to see them again, I'm not sure if they would hold up as well as "Transformers," but I would definitely like to give it a try.

GREAT FUN
Big Movie Fan5 May 2002
This cartoon was fun and so was the series that followed. It was one of those great 1980's cartoons.

There are obvious similarities with Transformers and I think that Transformers was a superior cartoon but this was fun too.

Both the good Gobots and bad Gobots were a lot more 'human' than the Transformers. Scooter was my favourite throughout the series. Also, in the interests of equality we had a few 'female' Gobots.

Like other 1980's cartoon heroes the good Gobots were truly moralistic whilst the bad Gobots were really wicked with no redeeming features at all.

Those who have watched Transformers might not enjoy this as much but it can be enjoyed if you're in the right mood.

The rivalry was pointless. I loved Gobots.
blackarachnia214 June 2001
When I was a kid the rivalry between Gobots and Transformers was rather intense but I thought it was rather pointless, maybe even a little bit silly, because my kid brother and I had tons and tons of the Gobots toys when we were kids. It was another chapter in the pointless rivalry between Gobots and Transformers. Gobots started out small so the Transformers started out small. Transformers had bigger toys then Super Gobots were created. Then Gobots got their Power Warriors while Transformers had their robot combiners, gessalts. I didn't see the point of the Transformers versus Gobots thing when I was a kid and I don't see the point of the Transformers versus Gobots thing now.

Mediocre Cartoon
RestlessRust9 September 2004
I never loved the GoBots. I had the toys and I watched the show, but in a time when kids were obsessed with transforming robots, this cartoon never quite got it right. While the Transformers was never as dark as my all-time favorite cartoon, Voltron, it definitely had more edge than the GoBots. And while the Transformers looked like robots who transformed into vehicles, the GoBots never looked like robots at all but simply walking vehicles (as a child I didn't know how to express this, so I simply said that the GoBots "kept their stuff") and that was the main thing that always bugged me about the show.

That said, the GoBots will always have a place in my heart because I could afford the toys. Most GoBot toys sold for less than $5, while most Transformers went for about $8-$10 (big ones, like Optimus Prime, went for over $20!), and we didn't have that much money. So I had a lot more GoBots than Transformers. The cartoons, however, were free, and it is in that respect that the GoBots left me feeling shortchanged.

Hanna-Barbera series about transformers
TheTransfan25 October 2000
This series was around the same time as the popular "Transformers", but its toys were predecessors before them. The series involves Guardians (the good guys, led by Leader-One) and the Renegades (the bad guys, led by Cy-Kill). The story line is pretty much like Transformers, and I have noticed plenty of similaraties. I can't tell if this series ripped off Transformers or vice-versa, but I will say that if the Transformers did rip them off, they did it MUCH BETTER. This show I remember watching it and loving it; upon buying a used GoBots tape, I cringed at the inferior plotlines compared to my childhood love, the Transformers. This is strictly kid-stuff. The Transformers were much cooler and more interesting.

Big piece of trash as Hanna Barbera's usual.
haoumaru31 October 2003
This gotta be one of the saddest cartoons of all time. Even promotional animated characters are better than this. This was just a blatant attempt to cash in the popularity of Transformers, back at the time. Horrid animation, voices, character designs and plots, all obviously a poor attempt at re-create the Transformers' coolness. I would never recommend this, that just like 95% of Hanna Barbera's shows, is a total waste of time. Horrible.

A cartoon based on a whole slew of toys, but for some reason mainly only featured six of them.
Aaron137521 February 2009
Yes, if they made a live action version of this cartoon all they would have to feature is Leader-1, Turbo, and Scooter on the good side and Cykill, Copter and that evil car that may have been a gal on the evil side. The toys numbered probably close to the hundred the amount of robots and week after week these six were the only ones really focused on. Which is one of the reasons I did not like this cartoon as much as Transformers or that Mighty Orbots show this inferior show got canceled. The robots just shot lasers from their hands, they had a stupid plot device of only so many gobots could transport to earth at a time hence why there was only the six old standbys (you know it was mainly cause it was easier to draw the same characters week after week), Scooter was lame and considering he could not shoot lasers you would think the bad guys would have a major advantage till you realized their leader was simply a motorcycle while the good leader is a fighter jet. Another thing that bugged me about the show, all the toys were relatively small and affordable. Yet they had certain ones called deluxe Gobots who were fairly expensive and bigger than the other normal sized ones, but for some reason in the cartoon they made these Gobots smaller than their counterparts. What the heck was up with that?
