I know, it’s still early. It’s April, which is absurdly early to be thinking about the Oscars. That being said, there’s certainly fun to be had in contemplating early predictions. The Academy just announced some small rule changes last week, mainly some simple housekeeping, though they did make things a little different in two particular categories. One is that things like last year’s winner Oj: Made in America are no longer eligible in Best Documentary Feature, while the other is that a wider swarth of voters will be nominating in Best Animated Feature now. Will that result in different nominees? Quite possibly, though we shall see. What it did, however, was spur me on to do this update… Below you will see a slightly new look at what Oscar could end up doing. A lot of the contenders are the same right now, as you might imagine,...

Last week, The Weinstein Company showed their hand a bit early, but revealing they’d put “Mary Magdalene,” “The Current War,” and “Wind River” on their 2017 calendar. To the more cynically minded (or, for anyone who has watched the indie studio over the past few years), there was some scoffing that it was inevitable that at least one of those movies would wind up being pushed back and/or caught in the Weinsteins release schedule purgatory (like, for example, “Tulip Fever” starring Alicia Vikander).

The Weinstein Company has announced dates for three of its 2017 films: “Mary Magdalene,” “The Current War” and “Wind River.” “Mary Magdalene,” a biblical biopic about the mother of Jesus, will hit theaters in limited release on November 24 before expanding throughout December. The film is directed by Garth Davis, who helmed TWC’s “Lion,” which received six Academy Award nominations. “Lion” star Rooney Mara plays the title character. Helen Edmundson and Philippa Goslett wrote “Mary Magdalene,” which also stars Chiwetel Ejiofor, Tahar Rahim, and Ryan Corr. “The Current War,” which chronicles the feud between two moguls developing reliable systems of delivering electricity in.

As a general rule, I don’t usually update the initial year in advance predictions so quickly, but this is a special situation. Not only is there a new big time potential contender looking to come our way in 2017 now, it’s also replacing what was formerly seen as a major player. That sort of disruption right at the start is a perfect excuse to tinker a bit with what I’ve initially come up with. It won’t look too different, but there will be some definite switches that you’ll see. Then, we’ll wait a month until updated in April, so this won’t be a weekly occurrence, fear not. For now though, this is just a bonus of sorts. Below you will see the tinkering in question. Mainly, it was switching out one Steven Spielberg project for another. That would be his Pentagon Papers film The Post...

You knew this was coming. With the Academy Awards now in the books, why not look ahead to next year’s potential slate? The Oscars had their say, but now we’re up and running again with pure speculation. Last year I had three of the ultimate nine Best Picture nominees in my initial lineup, as well as Emma Stone in Best Actress for La La Land and actually picking Casey Affleck to win it all in Best Actor for Manchester by the Sea from the start. We’ll see how things go this year, but I have a few guesses to make today. Remember, it’s early. The 90th ceremony is still almost exactly 12 months away. Still, we press on. It’s all a complete crapshoot at this point, but without anything to go on, there’s no reason not to assume that Christopher Nolan’s Dunkirk won’t...

Sundance is over and the prizes are won. People have dispersed to their homes and the realities that await them there.
This was a Sundance like no other I can remember, and I have attended every single one since 1986! The cold was extreme; and the political engagement and disgust was extreme. Not only did we have the Inauguration the first day, but the Women’s March the second day had probably 6,000 people marching and on that day the first of many deplorable executive orders (this one against women of the world and their control over their own bodies) began flying off the desk of our current president, who has continued to issue at least one every day, each one more despicable than the previous. Politics and women took center stage.

Over the weekend, the Sundance Film Festival wrapped up for 2017 with its annual awards ceremony. Now, you can’t really look at their award choice and assume anything, in terms of Academy crossover, but it never hurts to check in. The premiere independent festival usually has some kind of Oscar representation in a given year, so while we’re still looking at the 2016 releases on the Academy Award circuit, these potential 2017 releases are essentially launching a campaign right now. It’s just a longer one. So, let us peek in on what Sundance this year might end up offering the precursor season down the line. Oh well, here goes nothing… Last year, we notably had The Birth of a Nation initially emerge as a presumed Oscar lock, though it ultimately was Manchester by the Sea that became an Academy Award favorite. Other alums from last year included Camerperson, Captain Fantastic,...

January 19 Update: Heading into Park City’s opening night screening of An Inconvenient Sequel on Thursday, we take a look at a dozen acquisition titles likely to spark deals once the action gets underway.
The Sundance Film Festival will unveil 120 features over the course of ten days, setting the tone of Us independent cinema in 2017, unearthing international gems and launching several potential awards contenders.
While a certain number of films arrived with distribution already in place, others have sparked deals in the last few weeks (we’re thinking of you, Call Me By Your Name, Casting JonBenet, Berlin Syndrome and Long Strange Trip).
Then there are the acquisition titles. Sundance inevitably sparks a multitude of deals during and after the event and buyers expect modestly priced transactions in the $3-5m range. This has been a common refrain every year since 2008. Watch the numbers soar on a handful of titles.

Being that his recent Time Out of Mind left a strong impression on us, making its way into a couple of year-end lists, we’re intrigued by news that Oren Moverman has found a follow-up project — one not only based on well-regarded material, but also with Richard Gere back in tow and a strong cast surrounding him. Variety tell us he’ll next write and direct The Dinner, an adaptation of Herman Koch‘s novel in which two brothers, Paul and Stan Lohman (Steve Coogan and Gere, respectively), have a meal with their wives, Claire and Barbara (Laura Linney and Rebecca Hall, respectively). The former sibling is out-of-work; the other is a beloved politician on the cusp of grabbing his state’s gubernatorial position. What unites them is a “monstrous crime [that] has been committed by the Lohman kids,” and what accelerates the unease between these couples is how the matter...
