Engrossing thriller with brutal action
superindrajit30 August 2016
Warning: Spoilers
The first collaboration between Sunil Shetty and Ashok Honda resulted in a barbarous action film, Anth. Rakshak was their second outing which could not match the stupendous success of Anth. However, this picture is better since it is supported with superior direction as compared to Anth. In addition, Rakshak also has a plot which is more engrossing than Anth. If the film falters, it is because of some of the acting instead of the direction.

Rakshak's storyline consists of a coma patient who is being targeted by some criminals. After he is rescued and revived, we come to know that Raj Sinha was once an Assistant Superintendent of Police. He was leading a positive life with his family members. He visited his village after giving his police course exams. During his stay, he is notified of his success in those courses. Basically, he becomes an ASP of the Indian Police Force. Unfortunately, all this happiness is short lived. Sadly, wicked situations and vicious circumstances were against Sinha and his family members. It can be predicted that the antagonists of Rakshak are responsible for all the toil and trouble in Raj's colorful life. However, the entire chain of events demonstrating this are well shot in the first half. The audience's attention is hooked for the most part. After watching a great deal of cruel injustice, the audiences (especially Sunil Shetty fans) will be interested to witness Sunil's character ferociously ravage the antagonists of this film. In other words, the audiences will rarely find a boring moment in this film.

Ashok Honda's direction is good but it somehow falters towards the climax. The entire climatic battle is overdone and there is an overdose of violence. The first half is mostly coherent with occasional snags like a few crude comedy scenes. For instance, the "Kuchi Kuchi" game between Sunil and Karishma is a little crude after the first couple times. The second half is much more serious with a lot of bloodshed which will entertain action lovers.

Action sequences are mostly well choreographed by Ravi Dewan. Dewan is more creative this time without shying away from the brutality. However, the pre-climax action scene is preposterous. This is because Sunil is able to dodge numerous bullets while driving a jeep which never gets damaged until the end. I understand that 1990s action sequences are not meant to be very realistic. However, such an action scene with an increasingly unrealistic invincibility factor is just too hard to digest.

Anand Milind's music is very refreshing having some of the biggest hits of the 1990s. Shehar Ki Ladki is a catchy song with hilarious lyrics. The song went on to become a chartbuster in the mid 1990s. Kuchi Kuchi was added eventually and it also quickly climbed the charts. It's lyrics are fun and it has also been well shot like Shehar Ki Ladki. Sundara Sundara was the second biggest hit in the film, it is a decent song. The sensuous song, Uee Yaa, is forgettable. However, Zaalim Jahan Berang Hai has superior lyrics. It manages to successfully show Sunil's transformation from a weakened person to a brawny individual. The song contains some training montages which are a delight to watch.

Sunil Shetty shines in the action sequences but is far from outstanding in other aspects of acting. In the 1990s, he was never great at emoting. However, he was surprisingly better at emoting in some of his previous films like Takkar. In Rakshak, he overacts terribly in some important scenes. For example, when he has to weep inconsolably for the demise of his loved ones, he hams it up. In addition, when he has to shout at the villains, he hams it up. In some of his other flicks, he would not overdo such scenes. In short, he was much better in films like Mohra, Takkar, and Gopi Kishan. Karishma Kapoor is hilarious in some scenes but it was depressing to watch her innocent character meet such a tragic demise. She looks ravishing and does her role with ease. Sonali Bendre has a shorter role but she is excellent here. Instead of simply being a bimbette, she gets a role and she is convincing as the lady doctor. Aruna Irani is successfully convincing as Sunil's mother in the film. Raghuvaran appears menacing but he overdoes his villainy. Mushtaq Khan is good in a few hilarious sequences during the first half of the film. He is also decent as the caring friend of Sunil after Sunil's family is wiped out. Alok Nath is convincing as the police commissioner who encourages Sunil to join the police force. Deepak Shirke is alright as the corrupt cop. The rest provide decent support.

On the whole, Rakshak is engrossing but it could have been better. It's action and music stand out the most. However, Sunil's underperformance and some inconsistencies largely affect the film. Despite this, Rakshak is still worth a watch because it keeps you hooked mostly.

A Must See For Sunil Shetty Action Fans!!
r_mantra_r26 June 2016
After finally seeing this film almost 20 years later it's release date, I must say it most definitely did not disappoint! The negative reviews written here do not do the film justice.

As a serious Sunil Shetty fan, Rakshak is on par with some of his previous hard hitting action films, the likes of Krishna, Mohra, Takkar & Vinashak.

A great cast with a decent plot & excellent action sequences especially at it's climax.

Although Raveena Tandon only appears in the smash hit song 'Shahar Ki Ladki' & is not cast in the film, enjoyed seeing 3 Bollywood beauties in one film especially Sonali Bendre who plays a doctor (something other than her usual roles of a romantic interest). Karishma Kapoor , Aruna Irani, Alok Nath & Mushtaq Khan are familiar faces which alongside Sunil Shetty's gives the film a good variety in terms of casting.

My first film seeing actor 'Raghuvaran'. Quite refreshing seeing an honest man turned villain being played by an actor other than Gulshan Grover & Amrish Puri.

There are many gruesome criminal acts shown in the film which were difficult to watch. A mature audience is recommended.

Superb soundtrack by Anand-Milind. All hit songs 'Shahar Ki Ladki', 'Kuchi Kuchi' & 'Sundara Sundara' were well shot & choreographed in the film which continues to remain iconically memorable till today.

My first film under the 'Ashok Honda' banner other than the editing done in one of my favorite films of 1994 'Amaanat'. Decent direction that could have been better in some parts, but not too bad as I have seen worst.

My only complaint is the poor quality of the DVD releases of this film which needs to be re-mastered with better video quality & proper English Subtitles.

Poor combination of bits from different english movies
vinod-213 February 2001
This movie is a standard hindi masala. Most of the scenes are poor remakes of popular sequences from movies like Timecop, Universal soldier etc. Except for Karishma Kapoor and good(not excellent) music there's nothing much in this movie. Raghuvaran, an excellent actor in south is wasted in this movie. Sunil Shetty did fairly a good job I'd give him an 'A' for his dancing.

A full on Masala Entertainer
abhijeets-inbox14 July 2017
The movie was released on November 29, 1996 and had a mixed response . The critics rubbished it as another Sunil Shetty Movie while the common public who flocked the single screens loved it. Each movie has a genre. Rakshak is neither a proper action movie nor is it a family entertainer . It is somewhere offset in the Masala genre where you can find the current day Bhojpuri movies . If you look at it that way , you will definitely be entertained .

The lead actor Sunil Shetty has done some amazing action scenes showing off the 'Shetty Swagger '. He looks at ease through most of the movie barring the emotional scenes. The movie revolves around him and he carries it off very nicely . His overacting in few scenes can be certainly overlooked as he improved it by leaps and bounds in the coming years .

Karisma Kapoor became gorgeous in Raja Hindustani ( which released a fortnight earlier ) and it clearly reflects in her screen presence. She plays the role of Sunil Shetty's friend and wife in this movie. She looks very beautiful and charming in the movie . Her dancing skills in 'Kuchi Kuchi' and 'Sundara Sundara ' show us that a diva has arrived. However, her end was brutal and should have been pictured subtly .

Aruna Irani, Mushtaq Khan and Raghuvaran do their job effectively. Especially Raghuvaran's fall to dark side is so 'Vader' . His remorseless acts make you hate him and that's the mark of a great villain . Raveena and Sonali are like garnish on the movie and make it look good .

The movie has lot of gory scenes with full violence. There are some sexually implicit scenes with Karisma and Sunil with a song dedicated to Bedroom Romance. Don't show the movie to your kids unless they are 13+ . Seriously .

Rakshak - 24 years on
happyms-570137 September 2020
Watching this again right now on DVD. And the film is still as brutal today as I remember watching it when it released in 1996.

I still remember the harrowing scenes of Suneil Shetty's mother and wife being killed by the very people he called family.

The film is rightly called Rakshak for a reason. I don't know what rating it was given by the censor but it's not for the faint hearted.

Nor is it for young children. The scenes of gore and violence are just a bit too much. The film should be rated 18.

They made me wince and they brought on my tears. Even in 2020.

Only Suneil Shetty fits the bill for his role in this film.

A recommended watch. But not for the faint hearted amongst us.

Awesome Bollywood classic action movie.
euroasiangenetic7 August 2019
We all heard the Bollywood classic line "I can talk English" and a lot of musical classic.

But this movie is more serious storytelling with Bollywood style musical act.

We follow The detective Raj Sinha who is assign with the task of bringing to justice the people who are responsible for printing and circulating fake currency notes. Raj is shocked when he learn that the leader behind this crime is none other than his childhood friend, Raghavan.

On YouTube the movie is mostly famous for the classic dance number scene with the black dancing motorcycle gang, but the movie is more than that.

It has a lot humor, action, beauty, women beauty and cinematography beauty. This one of my favorite movies of the 90s.

10/10.

A complete entertainment package
itsmanva16 October 2022
Warning: Spoilers
The movie is a complete entertainer with all elements needed. It keeps you enthralled through the duration.

Suspense : Who is trying to kill ASP Raj Sinha? A patient in Coma attacked by a scary looking killer and saved by the Doctor is such a thrilling experience. In the later parts, many things which we already know are revealed. But the flow is smooth and never feels rushed.

Melodrama : The exploring of Mother-Son relationship and Friendship is wonderful here. Raghu letting go of his conscience and going on to butcher his friend's family is so enraging to watch and the hate it generates for Raghuvaran is a kudos to his acting.

Action : Sunil Shetty at his best beating up goons gives goosebumps. His fight scenes are beautifully choreographed and he gives full justice to them through his awesome action sequences.

Romance : Rakshak has a very raunchy romance between Karisma and Sunil. Karisma as a sexually aggressive village girl with lot of navel closeups is sure to generate whistles. A bedroom song bordering on soft porn keeps the public fully satisfied.

Rakshak is gold for those who love it.

Zaalim Jahan Berang Hai....
drmanasbajpai23 September 2022
Rakshak is one of my top four favourite action movies of all time the other being Telugu movies, Samba, Aravinda Sametha and Vikramarkudu but Rakshak is on top. The story of the movie is unpredictable and credit goes to the great Raghuvaran for his portrayal of a frustrated man to a dreaded antagonist. To build up the character of main protagonist you need a great villain too and here in Rakshak, Raghuvaran gave his one of the best performances with incredible voice modulation. I believe the movie should have been certified adult pertaining to the raunchy sequences between Sunil and Karishma and brutal scenes. The action was one of the best of the 90s. In acting Raghuvaran was above par, Sunil Shetty was brilliant in action and emotion both. Karishma and Sonali both looked beautiful, however the show was stolen by Raveena Tandon with the chartbuster like Shahar ki ladki. The music by Anand Milind was superhit and topped the charts back then in 1996 with songs like Shahar ki ladki, kuchi kuchi and Sundara sundara but the most soulful song was rendered by The great SP Balu sir Zalim jahan Berang hai. Among supporting casts Aruna Irani was phenomenal and Mushtak khan was decent. Overall Rakshak was a bang for the buck in 1996 with superhit music, breathtaking action, some brilliant performances and a decent story.
