Academy Award winner Manos Hadjidakis ("Never on Sunday") wrote his first original popular songs for this movie. By then he was known as a serious composer. Beginning with this movie he started a second, parallel career as a popular songwriter.
The movie was screened in 1955 and sold 126,530 tickets. It came 2nd out of 22 movies.
Before the movie was released, there was a public dispute between the director Alekos Sakellarios and the acclaimed writer and director Giorgos Tzavellas. The latter claimed to be the author of the idea of the street organ.
Filopoimin Finos had to be persuaded by Alekos Sakellarios to cast Vasilis Avlonitis in the leading role, since Finos thought that his popularity had faded away after appearing in several low budget productions. Also, he was skeptical about Jenny Karezi, as she looked to him squint-eyed. On the contrary, he was very eager to cast Alekos Alexandrakis, reportedly offering him a high fee.
