Orgy at Lil's Place (1963)

** (out of 4)

Sisters decide to head to New York City where they both end up getting jobs working as nude models. Before long they begin to take on more jobs before they end up at Lil's place.

ORGY AT LIL'S PLACE is a film that was lost for several decades before a print finally turned up and it was shown at a theater in Bloomington, Indiana of all places. The film would eventually be released to Blu-ray and I must say that I was really shocked to see how wonderful the print was. The film itself had become a cult favorite even before people saw it because of the poster, which I must say turned out to be much better than the film itself.

The film deserves some credit because it's considered the first roughie so there's no question that it would influence the sub-genre that would become quite popular in New York. I'd also give director Jerald Intrator some credit because technically speaking the film is well-made but people must remember that this was the "first" roughie so they shouldn't be expecting certain things that would pop up in the genre later on.

If you're expecting anything brutal or overly dirty then you're going to be disappointed because there's really not too much nudity and the "rough" stuff is very tame by today's standards and its even tame for the genre standards. As was the case with a lot of these movies, this here was shot silent and we get narration from start to finish as the sister constantly tells us what we're seeing as well as explaining the character's situations.

ORGY AT LIL'S PLACE isn't a masterpiece or even a good film but there are enough interesting moments to make it worth watching. The cinematography is certainly beautiful and as I said the picture is certainly well-made. Plus, it was fun getting to see New York City as it was in 1963.

Everyone Paints in the Nude, No?

For me there was only one reason to watch this movie -- and that't the shots of NYC in the 60s. Fascinating to me. Steal sandwich for 65 cents! The World Trade center wasnt even built yet. All the cars on teh street look like they're from the 50's ad there's no traffic!

It looks like this was filmed largely on the upper east side of Manhattan. There's a side trip to Coney Island when it was still safe to go there.

The older sister has huge juggs. The sister who will get traumatized, not so much. They should have switched roles. The filming is largely silent with a voice over track.

It's a well-filmed, but not good, movie.

Fun 60's soft-core romp

Warning: Spoilers
Sisters Ann (fetching Kari Knudsen) and Sally (comely June Ashley) get involved in the modeling scene in New York City. Director Jerald Intrator keeps the enjoyable story moving along at a brisk pace and maintains an amiable breezy tone throughout while sprinkling in some mild nudity and equally tame simulated BDSM stuff. Knudsen and Ashley make for attractive and appealing leads, with ravishing redhead Knudsen especially easy on the eyes. Moreover, there are solid supporting contributions from Bob Curtis as friendly photographer Charles, John Lyon as handsome painter Bob, Terry Powers as the worldly, but jaded Lil, and Myles Stewart as smarmy talent scout Mark. The crisp black and white cinematography bursts into gorgeously vibrant color in the last reel. The lively bebop jazz score hits the swinging spot. Best of all, this film provides lots of choice vintage footage of early 1960's New York City that includes an amusement park in Coney Island, the Staten Island Ferry, and the nightclub the Grecian Palace which comes complete with a yummy belly dancer strutting her sizzling sexy stuff. A neat diversion.
