Baseball Fun
UncGeorge8 October 2006
The clip actually makes some attempts at being educational and does well at explaining some of the basic concepts of baseball. It's filled with some humor from the 30's that doesn't go over quite as well today; it seems silly and somewhat sophomoric. But it has the Babe in it! Need I say more? Just that fact alone makes it well worth the watch. Seeing this giant in action was a real treat! This movie has great historical value, notice how the baseball crowd all wore their Sunday best to the game. Little details about how the game once was are interspersed in this very brief short. If you're interested in viewing this movie check it out on google video.

Far better and more watchable than I would have suspected

Warning: Spoilers
While this isn't the greatest baseball movie of all time, it sure was a heck of a lot better than I had expected. Having seen the rather lame HEADING HOME (also with Babe Ruth), I had very low expectations for this baseball short. However, I was happy to see that it was still very watchable even today--both from a historical standpoint and just for aesthetic value.

This movie is both an instructional video and a fictionalized story about the Bambino helping coach a girls team to beat the guys. As far as instructional goes, Ruth's comments and demonstrations were excellent as were the double-exposures demonstrating correct form. As far as the coaching of the girls' team to victory, this was all very silly and done tongue-in-cheek but it had some charm and made me chuckle--especially at the totally silly ending where the Babe dresses up like one of the girls! Cute, informative and entertaining--this one's a keeper.

Fun Short Has Ruth Teaching the Ladies

Fancy Curves (1932)

*** (out of 4)

Babe Ruth crushes a home run and as he crosses home plate a group of women ask him to teach them how to play. The next day Ruth has them on the field teaching them how to throw and field. The day after it's time for the guys to play the girls. This here is a rather interesting short as it shows Ruth teaching basic fundamentals like several others in the series. The funny thing here is that he's teaching this to women and of course women baseball players would become a major thing when WWII happened. This short has some sexist moments and basically says women have to cheat in order to win but at the end of the day it's rather fun and the pay-off was extremely good.
