On Christmas Eve 1951, NBC aired the very first “Hallmark Hall of Fame” with the world premiere of Gian Carlo Menotti’s Christmas opera “Amahl and the Night Visitors.” Rosemary Kuhlman and 12-year-old Chet Allen starred in this Peabody and Christopher Award-winning holiday story of the three Magi who stay with a young physically disabled boy and his widowed mother on their way to Bethlehem to find the Christ child. The presentation was so popular, the cast reprised their roles the following April. The production was done three more times in the 1950s on NBC, but Bill McIver played Amahl because Allen’s voice had changed.
The “Hallmark Hall of Fame,” which would air on NBC, ABC and CBS and is now exclusively on the Hallmark Channel, is the longest-running primetime series in TV history. In the past 70 years it has won over 80 Emmy Awards and dozens of Peabody Awards, Golden Globes,...

The CW has canceled “The Republic of Sarah” after one season, series creator Jeffrey Paul King said on Thursday.
“I’m sad to say the news is not good,” King posted to his Instagram page. “‘The Republic of Sarah’ will come to an end on Monday with what will now be our Series Finale. Thank you so much to everyone who watched and who let our little show into their lives. It means the world to us. Please tune in on Monday and help us say goodbye to Greylock.”

“We shot so fast and I’m someone who loves a lot of preparation,” reveals “Palm Springs” actress Cristin Milioti. She recently joined Gold Derby for a webchat (watch the exclusive video above) and adds, “I want to do 70 takes because I want to find 70 different ways in. There was something about only having only two tries. At first it had me get in my own way a bit. Then I was able to let go and trust that I’ve done my work. There was something terrifying about that but also very freeing.”
In “Palm Springs,” Milioti plays Sarah, a bridesmaid who gets brought into a time loop by Nyles (Andy Samberg) and has to live her sister’s wedding day on repeat. Milioti notes, “In the movie there’s a whole spectrum of stuff going on, much like life. There’s immense anger, immense joy. People are lost.

Nora Ephron’s world maybe narrowly middle class and privileged, but in this romcom classic she beautifully balances melancholy with fizzing optimism

I love a romcom. Place me in front of a Richard Curtis film for the 100th time and I am more than happy. Teach me how to Forget Sarah Marshall, Lose a Guy in 10 Days or just be a girl, in front of a boy, asking him to love her and I’m sold.
But here’s the rub. I’ve never seen a Nora Ephron movie. Well, none of the classics; the troika of American romcoms that set the template producers have followed for the last 30 years.

Jamie Lee Curtis is a horror icon on multiple levels. As well as being the daughter of Psycho star Janet Leigh, she’s obviously also the lead of the Halloween franchise, having played Michel Myers’ eternal enemy (sometimes sister) Laurie Strode for the past 40 years. We’ll soon see her again in Halloween Kills, but first, news has arrived that Curtis is set to make a new mark on the horror genre – this time as a director.
Deadline has revealed that Curtis is due to helm horror flick Mother Nature for Blumhouse, producers of the current Halloween films. The movie is part of a three-year first look film and television deal that the star and her Comet Pictures label have signed with the studio. On top of directing Mother Nature, which is set to be centered around climate change, Curtis is co-writing the script alongside writing partner Russell Goldman.

Three new players have been added to the cast, namely Izabella Alvarez, Nia Holloway and Hope Lauren, joining previously announced leads Stella Baker and Luke Mitchell. In addition, Kat Candler, whose directorial credits include “13 Reasons Why” and “Queen Sugar,” has been tapped to helm and executive produce the pilot.
“The Republic of Sarah” centers around rebellious high school teacher Sarah Cooper (Baker) who utilizes an obscure cartographical loophole to declare independence when faced with the destruction of her town at the hands of a greedy mining company. Now, Sarah must lead a young group of misfits as they attempt to start their own country from scratch.
Lauren will play the role of Corinne, Sarah’s devoted best friend. She is best known for her part on the CW’s “Supergirl,” and is represented by Rothman Andrés...

“And now that I have your attention, I’ll begin.”
This is what Richard E. Grant says, staring out at you from your TV screen, in a medium shot, against an orange background, after a good 10 seconds or so of complete silence. Why the noted, Oscar-nominated British actor is addressing you, the viewer, is unclear; it is the first in a series of queries you will have as AMC’s Dispatches From Elsewhere begins, and a seriously odd way to start a series. All we know is that he promises to be a reliable narrator,...

In a further sign of consolidation among independent distributors, Rialto Distribution has closed its Sydney office while continuing to book films into Australian cinemas via its Auckland headquarters.
However the end of the company’s presence in Oz after more than 20 years does not signal any reduction in acquisitions for multiple-platform release.
“We have gained much-needed economies of scale with Kevin Gordon, our Australia/New Zealand sales and distribution manager, selling in directly,” CEO Kelly Rogers tells If.
“This is going very well and Australian exhibitors are receptive to our strong line-up. We expect to release approximately 30 titles in 2020, mainly digital titles and select strong theatrical films.”
Former Myriad Pictures and Icon Film Distribution marketing executive Lisa Garner, who joined Rialto as Sydney-based head of film in February 2018, expects to soon announce her next venture.

There are isolated moments of grandeur within “Dispatches From Elsewhere,” an eccentric new anthology series from creator and star Jason Segel. What feels like a wake-up call for anyone who’s been binge-watching TV too long, the hourlong AMC drama begs its viewers to stop watching life and live it by stacking the screen with peculiar wonders. A hidden 3D city is unveiled from a specific rooftop viewpoint; dolphins are trained to communicate with human divers; a wandering Bigfoot carries his own ID card (name: Professor Foot), and, perhaps most charming of all, Richard E. Grant serves as a not untrustworthy narrator for and character within the increasingly quirky narrative.
Yet covering all this delightful tomfoolery is a sense of sincerity and superiority that make it feel like the show is daring you to laugh at it before bothering to earn your respect. “Dispatches From Elsewhere” has a few moments of genuine insight,...

Karyn Kusama, who directed the 2o16 Logan Marshall-Green cult horror thriller “The Invitation,” has signed on to direct the upcoming Fox horror film “Breed,” and she’s bringing her team with her. “Invitation” writers and producers Phil Hay and Matt Manfredi will reprise those roles for “Breed,” which is based on a novel of the same name by Chase Novak — whose pen name is Scott Spencer (“Endless Love,” “Waking the Dead”). “Breed” follows an upscale New York couple who are struggling to conceive a child and turn to a questionable and controversial Eastern European clinic. Ten years later, after-effects from that procedure.

One Thing I Love Today is a daily column dedicated to putting a spotlight on some pop culture item worth your attention. After all, there's enough snark out there. Why not start every day with one quick shotgun blast of positivity? Noah Hawley is a True Believer. There is no reason whatsoever that a television show based on Fargo should work, but after finishing season two of the FX series, I am blown away by what he's accomplished and by the sheer force of his love for Joel and Ethan Coen. Homage and inspiration are similar, but not the exact same things. Homage is fine, but I think you can only go so far with it. Inspiration, though, is something else. Real inspiration is a springboard to something new, something that is genuinely yours. One person looks at something and sees and processes it a certain way, and someone else...

Filmmaker and lawyer Stuart Kleinman passed away this Monday at the age of 57 of a heart attack in his New York home. After going to law school in the wake of a brief career in graphic design, Kleinman became Vice President of ICM and President of Jodie Foster's Egg Pictures, where his love of film led to him fostering the early careers of filmmakers such as Mathieu Kassovitz and Shunji Iwai and producing such films as "Waking the Dead" and "Home for the Holidays." In 2004, five years after becoming a Partner at New York's Frankfurt, Kurnit, Klein & Selz, Kleinman returned to the writing and producing, spending much of his time focussing on political topics over a broad range of issues, and continued to work on such discussions in recent years Randy Ostrow met Stuart when they both attended Scarsdale Junior High in the late '60s, quickly becoming friends over shared interests in film,...

Jodie Foster will direct and produce an upcoming drama pilot for Showtime. The project, called "Angie's Body," focuses on a sexy and dangerous woman who leads a family crime syndicate.
The project is Foster's first directorial effort for TV, Deadline reports.
Foster will executive produce the project along with writer Rob Fresco ("Touch," "Heroes") and Russ Krasnoff ("Community").
A two-time Oscar winner for acting, Foster has put much of her focus on behind-the-scenes roles over the past several years. She has directed three feature films: "Little Man Tate," "Home for the Holidays" and "The Beaver." Foster also produced several movies, including "The Dangerous Lives of Altar Boys," "Waking the Dead" and "Nell" (in which she also starred).
Foster has much less experience with television directing and producing. Her only previous TV directing credit was for an episode of "Tales from the Darkside" in 1988. In 1998, she returned to an off-screen television...

Nine’s The Block has won its first Sunday night since the show’s 2012 start.
As The Voice goes into its ‘battle rounds’, the high-rating singing competition dropped its Sunday show, which allowed The Block to claim top spot with 1.561m across the five city metro markets, according to preliminary results from OzTam.
Nine News Sunday took second place with 1.502m, followed closely by Seven News Sunday on 1.5m.
Seven’s Dancing With the Stars is struggling to capture the same numbers as in previous seasons, the show averaged around the 1.5m mark last year. Last night it did its seasonal best with 1.238m in fifth place for total viewers, benefiting from the lack of The Voice, which it had gone head to head with in its first two weeks.
The series return took 1.076m on Sunday 15 April and last week took 0.991. However, Seven still had the highest channel share...

Filming started today in Enfield on a brand new six part comedy for Sky called Gates, a character based sitcom based around relationships formed between parents at the school gates.
Tom Ellis and Joanna Page play parents Mark and Helen who’ve recently moved to the South East where their nine-year-old daughter is starting at a new primary school. And they’re about to discover what happens when your children choose your friends.
Essentially a character comedy, but with a nod to those sketch-like moments of madness which can only ever happen in the playground, Gates casts an eye on how relationships with parents formed during fifteen minutes of a school drop off and pick up can so easily take over your life. The school gates can be an unforgiving, socially exposed political minefield.
Gates boasts a distinguished cast that also includes:
Sue Johnston (The Royle Family, Waking The Dead), Tony Gardner (Lead Balloon,...

Generally, I have avoided trying to interview the personal heroes of my youth; it's too risky to one's cherished perceptions. But when faced with the opportunity to chat with Paul Darrow, the British actor who played the laconic and back-shooting anti-hero Avon of 'Blake's 7' (as well as the voice of Grand Moff Tarkin and other characters in 'Star Wars' videogames), I figured I'd take a chance. After all, if he shot me down in flames, at least he'd be in character...

Christopher Nolan likely gets offers to produce films on a daily basis. Except for the "Superman" reboot, he had only produced his own movies like "The Prestige" and "The Dark Knight." Deadline has now learned that Nolan's Syncopy production company has set up a supernatural thriller at Warner Bros and has already hired Keith Gordon (Waking the Dead) to write and direct it. Details about the story are being kept a secret, but the film is said to be based on a novel. Nolan is not going to be as involved as he is on the "Superman" reboot, but the fact that he's branching out into producing is a good thing.

Christopher Nolan is turning his attention to the horror genre. The filmmaker, who is known for his work in such movies as "The Dark Knight" and "Inception", has through his company, Syncopy, set up a supernatural thriller at Warner Bros., but he won't be the one directing the new project.
Nolan, instead, hired Keith Gordon to write and direct this untitled supernatural thriller project, while he himself takes the role of executive producer along with partner Emma Thomas. This will be a second time the 40-year-old takes a role behind the scenes for the projects he produces. He's giving the directing job of Superman reboot "Man of Steel" to Zack Snyder.

Gordon is perhaps known for his role as Arnie Cunningham in 1983 horror film "Christine". He has directed films, such as "Waking the Dead" and "The Singing Detective", and episodes of "The Killing" and "Dexter". The 50-year-old has worked as Nolan's assistant on several projects,...

Briefly: A great many big-name directors, after establishing their career directing pictures, move into producing. Some do it earlier than others (Eli Roth, Timur Bekmambetov) while many don't start lending their names and clout to other projects for many years. Christopher Nolan wasn't known as a producer of any films other than ones he would direct until the new Superman film, Man of Steel, started to come together at Warner Bros. Now we've got basic info on his second producing project, a supernatural thriller that Keith Gordon will write and direct. (Perhaps best known for starring in Christine, and he has also directed films like A Midnight Clear and Waking the Dead, and episodes of Dexter and The Killing.) Warner Bros. will release the film. We don't have a title or plot details, though Deadline [1] says the script is based on an as-yet unidentified novel. The site IDs Jordan Goldberg...

Christopher Nolan usually stays in the directors chair, although sometimes he makes exceptions. Okay, he's made one exception--letting Zack Snyder helm Man Of Steel. Now he's making another. Nolan has hired actor turned director Keith Gordon for a supernatural thriller. Syncopy, Nolan's company has set the film up over at Warner Bros. Gordon has directed Waking The Dead and The Singing Detective as well as episodes of Dexter. You might remember Gordon as Arnie Cunningham in the 1983...

Now here's someone I haven't seen since 2003's Second Hand Lions. Variety has reported that Haley Joel Osment has just signed on to star in Wake The Dead. Based on the graphic novel of the same name by Steven Niles, Waking The Dead will be a modern day retelling of one of Mary Shelley's most famous piece of work, Frankenstein. The updated story follows "Victor Franklin [Osment], a college student experimenting with reversing death."

Deadwood is definitely in the news today at BoomTron! We just reported on the lovely link between the FX network and hiring Deadwood alumni actors. Now, Showtime is getting in on the fun! “Ex-Deadwood heroine” Molly Parker now, according to our friends at TV Line, “will appear in several Season 6 episodes of the Showtime drama as Lisa Marshall, the sister of Colin Hanks’ mysterious new character, Travis.” Interesting!
Hanks will appear in all 12 episodes of Dexter‘s sixth season as a brilliant expert on ancient artifacts who somehow becomes linked to a series of grisly murders in Miami. It remains unclear if Travis will turn out to be a friend or foe of a certain Dark Passenger. Either way, as Showtime president David Nevins recently told TVLine, this year’s installment “ is not [about] one big bad.”
