Sex & Nudity

  • Mild references throughout the film.
  • Shrek is seen taking a bath in the opening credits; no nudity is seen
  • Some references and dirty humour.
  • Some suggestive song lyrics where what would otherwise be a dirty rhyme (e.g. "paid" in place of "laid" in the Merry Men song).
  • A running joke throughout is that Lord Farquaad's tall, vertically-inclined castle is his way of "trying to compensate for something". Jokes are later made by Shrek and Donkey that Fiona can do some "measuring" when she meets him.
  • A mildly suggestive parody of the 1970's TV show 'The Dating Game' is depicted.
  • Shrek is seen taking a mud shower (with his butt briefly shown in the original version, in the Freeform version is not seen but his lower back). The long stick branch covers his penis area, but moves suggestively while in mud.
  • In one scene we could see Shrek's rear
  • Two male puppets bend over and we see their butt cracks
  • Donkey called Dragon out for playing with his personal tail.
  • Donkey speculated Shrek and Fiona were digging on each other, but Shrek denied it.
  • Donkey lifts his leg over a campfire as if to extinguish it through urination (shown briefly from a distance). This is played for laughs.

Violence & Gore

  • When sliding down what looks like a series of rocks, Shrek gets hit in the groin.
  • At least twice in the film, Donkey falls from a high height.
  • Donkey mentions ogres grinding bones to make bread. Shrek replies "How about I decapitate an entire village, stick their heads on a pike, cut open their spleen and drink their fluids. Does that sound very nice to you?" This may be considered too much for an average family movie.
  • A gingerbread man spits on an antagonist.
  • Donkey tips over a big barrel to squash some warriors. Shrek takes some more out with a series of pro wrestling moves.
  • Robin Hood and his men show up and he briefly holds a knife on Shrek. Fiona, however, goes into martial arts mode and takes out all of the men (with punches and kicks, etc.) with one of them shooting an arrow at her and Shrek. We then see that the arrow struck Shrek in the behind (no blood or gore, although she has to pull it out and we then see what looks like a tiny bit of blood on just the arrow).
  • A dragon lands where the guards are guarding. The guards run away and the dragon follows them. Nothing happens.
  • In Fiona's castle their are many skeletons, armor of dead warriors, and various bones of men killed by Dragon.
  • Shrek and Fiona blow up a frog and a snake like balloons and let go of them floating up towards the sky. They both most likely died a slow and painful death.
  • Fiona singing causes a bird to explode. When the singing stops, we see the legs of the bird still on the tree branch with little smoke coming out of it. Nothing graphic or detailed but played for laughs.

Profanity

  • Lord Farquaad has been said to be hinting at the term "f-wad".
  • Shrek calls Donkey a "stubborn jackass", and Donkey calls Shrek a "kissass".
  • In the "welcome to Duloc" song a lyric is "clean your shoes wipe your (pause) face" implying an anatomical term as two male puppets bend over with visible butt cracks.
  • Shrek says he's about to save his ass, though he used it to refer to his donkey, and not as an expletive.
  • Mild language in kids movie (compared the PG movie).

Alcohol, Drugs & Smoking

  • A bear smokes a pipe in a few scenes
  • It is said by the Magic Mirror that Fiona likes pina coladas. The song "Escape (The Piña Colada Song)" by Rupert Holmes then plays in the background as the scene cuts into the next scene.
  • Shrek drinks a martini with an eyeball olive.
  • After Farquaad announces that whoever kills Shrek will be announced champion of some contest, the ogre picks up a mug and asks why they can't settle this over a pint. When Farquaad refuses, Shrek quickly downs the ale. He then opens a spigot on a barrel that sends a torrent of ale toward his attackers, knocking them down.
  • While Farquaad is in bed he is seen drinking a martini.

Frightening & Intense Scenes

  • Shrek is seen eating eyeballs in the opening.
  • Donkey's old owner is a very cranky old lady who was abusive to him. He is seen roped on the mouth, leashed.
  • Shrek made graphic threats to the townspeople about how they would be eaten by ogres.
  • Princess Fiona sings so loud that a bird explodes in one scene, may be sad for lighthearted viewers.
  • Shrek's monstrous roar scare off some villagers who have come after him. This is all meant to be for fun.
  • Shrek and Donkey go inside the castle. Among them are various skeletons, the general decrepit and somewhat spooky looking state of the castle, and then the huge, fire-breathing dragon that chases after Donkey, shooting fire at him and seemingly attempting to kill him. Later, however, they learn that the dragon is a girl who becomes smitten with Donkey, so some of that scary edge is removed from it (although it later chases after them again).
