COOLIE KILLER is a dark and gritty Hong Kong thriller with an amoral lead and even worse supporting cast. It's refusal to lift or lighten the mood reminded me of the Yuen Biao classic ON THE RUN and it's similarly shot. Charlie Chin, best known for his comedy roles in the likes of WINNERS & SINNERS, plays one of a team of assassins who find themselves pursued by killers as part of a wide-reaching conspiracy. The rest of the film shows him trying to solve the mystery while avoiding being killed by endless assasssins. The regular action scenes are low budget but brutally shot, and the most likeable cast member is former Shaw great Yueh Hua, having a ball as the charismatic cop. Chin isn't playing a nice guy at all here which makes the viewer feel grubby after watching.
