Before Arrival there was Charlie Sheen in The Arrival. Ryan takes a look at an unusual 90s sci-fi film...
When it came to sci-fi movies, 1996 was a crowded year: at the high end of the budget spectrum we had the invasion movies Independence Day and Mars Attacks; towards the middle we had John Carpenter's disappointing Snake Plissken sequel Escape From La, while Rutger Hauer starred in the cheap and cheerful Crossworlds and the brilliantly titled Omega Doom.
Throw in the startlingly botched Island Of Doctor Moreau, Star Trek: First Contact and Stuart Gordon's fun sci-fi oddity Space Truckers, and you have a busy 12 months in genre movies. Somewhat lost in the static was The Arrival, a nifty genre thriller which had the misfortune of coming out just a few weeks before the bigger, splashier Independence Day. A more modest and quirkier movie than Roland Emmerich's invasion flick,...

What new horrors await us on DVD this month? Well, lots of bloodsuckers, for starters...
As the old Simpsons quote goes, there are only three real monsters, kid: Dracula, Blacula and Son of Kong. Sadly, giant gorilla junior doesn’t make an appearance this month though we’ve at least got the first two categories covered.
Leading the way with aplomb, our friend Blacula finally graces this young blog with not one but two classics released on Blu-ray and DVD as a complete collection. In case you’re not familiar with this wonderful splicing of seventies Blaxploitation and gothic horror (shame on you if so), the tale of undead African prince Mamuwalde and his ongoing struggle with both his own bloodlust and pesky locals trying to stake him through the heart is both surprisingly well-made and massively enjoyable. Oh, and its success also led to the subsequent release of Blackenstein,...

From the 70s to the present, we look back through the sterling work of Rutger Hauer to bring you the actor’s 10 finest films that aren't Blade Runner...
For some, Dutch actor Rutger Hauer will forever be associated with a certain rooftop speech about tears in rain. But although his turn as doomed replicant Roy Batty in Blade Runner was a classic one, Hauer’s output before and since has been stunningly prolific. This list, therefore, is designed to highlight 10 of Hauer’s finest non-Blade Runner movies, with a particular emphasis on those that are lesser known – which is why we've gone for some older pictures rather than the more recent and mainstream, such as Batman Begins. And since this is Den of Geek, expect to find lots of action movies, horror, and low-budget sci-fi in the entries below.
One thing they all have in common, though, irrespective of...

They may not be household names like their A-list colleagues, but the actors on this list have appeared in some of our all-time favourite geek movies...
Some actors dabble in sci-fi; others dip their toe into fantasy; some may even make an appearance in the odd horror film - all before returning to the safety of the genres in which they feel more comfortable - perhaps a nice, award-chasing period drama, or a well-paid romantic comedy.
A-listers may see the geeky films that we on this site enjoy and celebrate as fun little side-projects, but there are actors out there who commit full-time to these types of movies. It is high time, therefore, that we credited these individuals with the recognition they deserve.
Besides the stipulation that, in order to be included, an actor had to still be alive and working today, there were no strict criteria that had to...

Commencing on the 8th June, the Annual Sydney Film Festival (now in its 58th year) promises to be a sterling celebration of modern cinema from around the world. Perhaps not as glitzy as Cannes, nor as iconic as Sundance or Toronto, the Sff has in any case plenty to recommend it, with one of the most impressively diverse film line ups I’ve had the pleasure of glancing over in a long time. Fifth generation Chinese director Chen Kaige (Farewell My Concubine) is Jury President of the Official Competition where 12 films will be in competition for the $60,000 film prize.
The festival will open with a Gala premiere of Joe Wright’s (Atonement, Pride and Prejudice) pursuit thriller Hanna, with Aussie’s answer to Meryl Streep actress Cate Blanchett in attendance on the red carpet and will close with Mike Mills’ (Thumbsucker) Toronto Film Festival triumph, the drama of later life-changing...
