Treat Williams, the versatile actor who starred as a New York City neurosurgeon who moves his family to Colorado on the WB series Everwood and in such films as Sidney Lumet’s Prince of the City and Milos Forman‘s Hair, died Monday in a motorcycle accident in Vermont. He was 71.
His agent, Barry McPherson of APA, confirmed Williams’ death in a statement to The Hollywood Reporter.
Williams, of Manchester Center, Vermont, was aboard a motorcycle and wearing a helmet when he collided with a car on Route 30 near Dorset, the Vermont State Police said in a statement.
An initial investigation indicated that the driver of the car “stopped, signaled a left turn and then turned into the path of a northbound 1986 Honda VT700c motorcycle operated by Williams. Williams was unable to avoid a collision and was thrown from his motorcycle. He suffered critical injuries and was airlifted to Albany Medical Center in Albany,...

The Bridgerton-verse is ruling Netflix.
Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story kept its crown for the week of May 8 to May 14, coming it at No. 1 among the streamer’s English-language TV series with another 158.68M hours viewed. Since it debuted on May 4, Queen Charlotte has now amassed 307M hours viewed and is quickly making its way to becoming one of Netflix’s most popular series of all time.
Currently sitting at No. 10 on the most popular list is Inventing Anna with 511M hours viewed in its first 28 days. With 16 more days in the 28-day measurement window, it seems likely that Queen Charlotte will meet that threshold. If it does, it will join both seasons of Bridgerton among Netflix’s most-watched series of all time. Each season drew more than 600M hours viewed in their first 28 days on the service.

Netflix’s first-ever “Bridgerton” spin-off, “Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story,” exploded into the global viewing charts this week, while movies were led by Tom Hanks‘ “A Man Called Otto.” Read on for the Netflix Top 10 (Week of May 1) viewing chart analysis.
It probably was a no-brainer for Netflix to explore the past of a popular character from Shonda Rhimes‘ hit streaming series “Bridgerton,” with Golda Rosheuvel reprising her title role in “Queen Charlotte” with India Amarteifio playing her younger self. Corey Mylchreest and Arsema Thomas were also part of the cast, playing Young King George and Young Agatha Danbury in the series building on Shondaland’s “Bridgerton-verse.” In its very first week, “Charlotte” received 148.3 million viewing hours worldwide, as the #1 series in the U.S., Canada and dozens of other countries.

Dearest readers, Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story is the talk of the ton.
The Shonda Rhimes prequel series quickly established its reign over Netflix‘s English-language TV charts for the week of May 1 to 7, amassing 148.28M viewing hours in its first weekend on the streamer.
Such a strong start for the series could indicate it will join both seasons of Bridgerton among Netflix’s most-watched series of all time. Each season drew more than 600M hours viewed in their first 28 days on the service.
The last Netflix series to make the list was The Night Agent, which had a record debut week in March when it managed 168.7M hours viewed in its first few days on the streamer. It dominated viewing on Netflix for several weeks and settled at No. 5 on the all-time list, surpassing Bridgerton Season 1.

Welcome to The B-Side, from The Film Stage. Here we talk about movie stars! Not the movies that made them famous or kept them famous, but the ones they made in between.
Today, we chat about one of the most famously beautiful (and talented!) actors of all time: Michelle Pfeiffer! We’re honored to have Veronica Fitzpatrick––of Brown University and The Bright Wall/Dark Room Podcast––on to talk Pfeiffer B-Sides Sweet Liberty, Tequila Sunrise, Wolf, and The Deep End of the Ocean.
We discuss what makes Michelle so iconic, how hard she had to work to push past being dismissed as just a pretty face, the incredible roles she’s turned down in her career, the extreme range she’s boasted during her time in the spotlight, and her willingness to take challenging roles.

Do you remember Jacquelyn Mitchard, the first author selected for Oprah's Book Club? Her debut novel, The Deep End of the Ocean, was published in June 1996, and Oprah-endorsed in September of that year, which helped it rocket to the top of the New York Times best-seller list. Two episodes were provided prior to broadcast.
It’s hard to argue against the claim that ABC’s new crime drama The Family is little more than a protracted Lifetime original movie. It’s got a set-up that’s somewhere between the gooey melodrama of The Deep End of the Ocean and the shattered family dynamic of The Lovely Bones, and the two hours sent to critics have a generic production value that’s a bit hollow and uninspired in a made-for-tv-movie sort of way. That’s especially clear with the show is held up against the crime drama to beat right now: ABC’S own American Crime.
The Family‘s pilot works arduously as it tries to obliterate that “second-rate” classification, dumping viewers directly into the day Adam (Liam James), who’s been missing for ten years, returns home to his family in Red Pines, Maine. The episode showcases emotional reunions alongside hard-to-look-at scars,...

On this day in 1996, Oprah Winfrey launched her book club and announced that “The Deep End of the Ocean” by Jacquelyn Mitchard would be her first selection. Oprah’s Book Club quickly became a hugely influential force in the publishing world. The popular daytime talk show host's stamp of approval on books often sent them to bestseller lists. Other notable Sept. 17 happenings in pop culture history: • 1957: Louis Armstrong canceled his trip to the U.S.S.R.. Announcing that he would not participate in a U.S. government-sponsored tour of the Soviet Union, the jazz musician said, “The way they are treating my people in the South, the government can go to hell.” • 1967: The Who ended a nationally televised performance of “My Generation” with a literal bang — an explosion, caused by explosives packed into Keith Moon’s drum kit, rocked the stage, singed Pete Townshend’s hair and...

We’ve seen a noticeable rise in recent years in terms of Lgbt visibility in Hollywood, but if you flash back even ten years ago—let alone twenty or thirty—the number of “out” performers and gay film and TV projects dwindles markedly. This was the Dark Ages, when Hollywood brought out maybe one movie a year with a gay character (who hopefully didn’t die or wasn’t a stereotype), and maybe one or two art-house films that broke through the clutter. Things began to improve in the 90’s, but it’s largely been since the age of reality television and the rise of cable over the past 15 years that we’ve really begun to see a more realistic breadth and scope of gay life being portrayed in a wide variety of ways.
Before that however, there were a handful of brave performers who—though not necessarily gay themselves...

Gratuitous Anecdote! I've always loved to draw and in my high school years it's what people knew me for. I won the High School's Departmental Award in Art (Do they still have departmental awards? Hell, do they still have art classes?) in that heady stretch of graduation celebrations where they keep honoring star pupils. One day early in my senior year or maybe it was at the end of my junior year, the art teacher asked one of the students to pose for the class. A guy I didn't know volunteered and I felt totally inspired. Instant crushing helps. He loved my drawing and we became fast friends after the class. The first day I went to his house after school I was stunned to see a whole house full of doppelgangers. He had one of those families...

Stage and film director who helped launch Dustin Hoffman's acting career
It could be argued, with some justification, that the greatest achievement of the film and stage director Ulu Grosbard, who has died aged 83, was to have helped launch the acting careers of Dustin Hoffman, Robert Duvall and Jon Voight. It was Grosbard who had the prescience to see a special talent in them that had escaped others, and who gave them the chance to exploit it.
All three future stars were involved in Grosbard's production of Arthur Miller's A View from the Bridge at the Sheridan Square Playhouse in New York in January 1965, for which both Duvall and Grosbard won Obie awards. Duvall played the lead as longshoreman Eddie Carbone, the part which he described as "the catalyst of my career", while Voight was Rodolpho. Hoffman, then a struggling actor, was stage manager.

In what looks to be an action version of The Deep End of the Ocean, Lautner stars with Lily Collins, Alfred Molina, Jason Isaacs, Maria Bello, Michael Nyqvist, and Sigourney Weaver. MTV has premiered the first trailer, and while the concept is a bit ridiculous and Lautner doesn’t really fit, Singleton has been known to make solid entertainment, so I’ll check it out. What does it look like when you have a job to write a feature film about Albert Einstein?
Well, that’s the right kind of question for Stephen Schiff, because he has been hired to write it for Odd Lot Entertainment.
He will write an original screenplay drawn from Einstein materials archived at Princeton and Hebrew Universities, as well as the Walter Isaacson biography, Einstein: His Life and Universe, published by Simon & Schuster in 2007.
At this moment we don’t have many details about this project, but we know that producers Gabe and Alan Polsky of Polsky Films acquired Einstein’s life rights in 2007 before Isaacson’s book was published.
The pair later brought Isaacson on board the project as a consultant. In the deal, Polsky Films secured access to Einstein’s personal and professional materials at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, which was co-founded by Einstein in 1918.

You may know Ryan Merriman, even if you aren't familiar with the name, from a large body of work when he was a child actor. A staple of the Young Artist Awards from the mid-90s through 2003 for such things as The Pretender, Taken, The Deep End of the Ocean, and more, Ryan is getting more and more ScreenTime in recent years, and may well be one to watch. Recently coming to you in an episode of Smallville, The Ring Two, and Final Destination 3, Ryan teams up now with Party of Five's Lacey Chabert for The Hallmark Channel's Elevator Girl. He's also coming up in quite a few interesting things: The 5th Quarter with Andie MacDowell and Aidan Quinn, The Hard Ride, a western with Val Kilmer and Elisabeth Shue, just to name a couple scheduled to come out this year.

1521 Takeda Shingen, Japanese warlord who Kagemusha tried to impersonate. Oopsie. I've actually never seen that Akira Kurosawa picture. How quickly should I rent it?
1913 Mary Martin, broadway star of Peter Pan, The Sound of Music and South Pacific fame. Those famous roles hit silver screens, but without Mary
1935 Woody Allen, legend (abundant posts)
1940 Richard Pryor, influential comedian
1945 Bette Midler the divine. In a fit of complete absence of budgeting sense I nearly purchased a flight to Vegas and a concert ticket last month. Just because. I've never seen her perform on stage but I did used to love her in the movies. Particularly: The Rose, Beaches (so underrated... weepies can't get no respect) and Big Business
1951 Treat Williams enduring B lister. Among the highlights: Hair,...

Fresh from the success of Dimension Films' Spy Kids 3-D: Game Over, Alexa Vega is packing her bags to join MGM's Sleepover. The Joe Nussbaum-directed comedy, which was just greenlighted, is due to begin lensing Sept. 29 in Los Angeles. The project revolves around a group of young girls the summer before they make the leap to high school. As one girl prepares to move out of town, her best friend (Vega) throws a slumber party for her and their friends the same night as the "popular girls" have their own overnight soiree. A competitive scavenger hunt ensues between the two parties, with a special prize for the winners: dibs on the best table in the high school lunchroom. Bob Cooper and Chuck Weinstock are producing from a script by Elisa Bell. At MGM, the project is being overseen by Elizabeth Ingold and Stephanie Palmer. Vega stars in all three installments of Spy Kids. Her other credits include the television series Ladies Man and films The Deep End of the Ocean and Ghosts of Mississippi. Vega is repped by SDB Partners and manager Gina Rue.
