Now that the Marvel Cinematic Universe seems to be winding down in earnest (films like "The Marvels" and shows like "Secret Invasion" aren't nearly as successful as their forbears), perhaps audiences may finally be able to speak about the series as it if weren't an inevitability. The MCU indeed stood like a mighty colossus over the entire film industry for the better part of 15 years, but there was nothing beyond our uncreative assumptions to indicate that it had to happen or that it would last forever.
Perhaps with that attitude gone, audiences will be able to see films like "Blade" as a stylish action/horror flick unto itself, and not a dry run for something better down the line. Perhaps the 1996 pilot for "Generation X" can be accepted merely as a low-budget, MTV-inflected take on the X-Men. And perhaps TV movies like David Goyer's 1998 actioner "Nick Fury: Agent of S.H.I.E.L.D....

Though it was only published 15 years go (which isn't all that long ago by Marvel Comics standards), "Secret Invasion" is one of the most beloved and impactful events in Marvel's storied history. Now, it's coming to the Marvel Cinematic Universe and, somewhat amazingly, it's not as a movie. Rather, it's going to be a big event series on Disney+ this summer, giving us something to do between "Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3" and "The Marvels." A new trailer has dropped, setting up Samuel L. Jackson's return as Nick Fury, letting him take the spotlight arguably for the first time ever.
For those unfamiliar, the story centers on the shapeshifting aliens known as the Skrulls, who we met in "Captain Marvel," planning to invade Earth. They have been replacing people on the planet in anticipation of a takeover, making it difficult for Fury -- or anyone else for that...

Samuel L. Jackson is one of the most central figures in the Marvel Cinematic Universe in his role as Nick Fury. But Jackson wasn’t entirely convinced that the movie version of Nick Fury would resemble his comic book counterpart.
How Samuel L. Jackson reacted to Nick Fury looking exactly like him in the comics Samuel L. Jackson | Axelle/Bauer-Griffin/FilmMagic
Jackson wasn’t immediately aware of his likeness being used for the Nick Fury character in the comic books Marvel produced. Jackson has always been an avid comic book reader and collector. So the actor first learned about Nick Fury’s sudden resemblance towards him while doing his routine comic book shopping.

Don Cheadle has revealed that his multi-film contract with Marvel Studios has come to an end.
The actor has played Colonel James Rhodes, Aka War Machine, in seven films across the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) franchise, as well as one TV show.
He made his debut in 2010’s Iron Man 2, replacing Terrence Howard in the role.
Cheadle is set to reprise the role in the forthcoming Disney+ series Secret Invasion, alongside Samuel L Jackson’s Nick Fury, and his own series Armor Wars.
However, speaking at Disney’s D23 Expo last weekend, Cheadle revealed that he had come to the end of his pre-contracted time in the MCU.
Marvel habitually sign actors in advance to multi-film deals that sometimes span the better part of a decade.
“I’m done with my contracted years in the MCU,” he said (per Variety).
However, Cheadle sounded optimistic about the prospect of further MCU projects down the line.

Shield seemed so cool at first. Well, that’s not strictly true. When Agent Phil Coulson sheepishly arrived in Iron Man, babbling about the Strategic Homeland Intervention, Enforcement, and Logistics Division, he just seemed like one more nerd for Tony Stark to dunk on. But when Nick Fury showed up in Stark’s penthouse to talk about the Avengers Initiative for the first post-credit sequence of the MCU, it seemed like Shield operated in a world deeper and more secret than we had imagined.
To be sure, some moments in the MCU backed up that appearance. In The Avengers, we saw Shield’s massive underground bunker, in which it experimented on the Tesseract. In Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Project Insight gave Shield the ability to rain death from above on any target it chooses. Of course, The Winter Soldier also revealed that Hydra had infiltrated the organization, which ultimately...

Though it was already reported back in September, the recent Disney investors call revealed that Marvel Studios is, in fact, working on a Nick Fury-led TV series that will eventually land on Disney+. There’s one catch though, it’s not titled “Nick Fury” and it’s more than just about him. The show is, “Secret Invasion,” a newly announced series heading to Disney+ that stars Samuel L.

Marvel Studios have more than enough on their plate at the moment, with a full schedule of Phase Four movies being complemented by an increasingly stacked roster of Disney Plus shows, and the recently announced Nick Fury series is the ninth small screen exclusive in the works that will continue to expand the scope and scale of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
That’s without even mentioning the projects we definitely know are happening but haven’t been given an official green light yet like Blade, X-Men, Fantastic Four and the inevitable fifth Avengers movie. Not only that, but over the next few months, the two-year hold options on the former Netflix residents will be expiring, meaning that the Defenders will also be free to join the McU.

Screenwriter and director David S. Goyer sat for an in-depth interview during Comic-Con@Home on Saturday (July 25), recapping a career (so far) that has included writing films like The Crow: City of Angels, the original Blade trilogy, Batman Begins and Man of Steel, as well as TV series like Da Vinci’s Demons and Constantine.
Goyer continues to work on high-profile projects to this day, with writing and executive producing credits on two massive upcoming TV series: The Sandman, based on Neil Gaiman’s legendary comic book, and Foundation, adapted from Isaac Asimov’s classic series of science fiction novels.
But in addition to working on iconic titles like the ones mentioned above, Goyer — like every other filmmaker in Hollywood, no matter how successful — has seen a number of projects slip through his fingers, caught either in development hell or a changing of the studio guard. I know a lot of you are excited about Avengers: Infinity War, so while we wait for it to be released, which seems like a lifetime away, we have a great retro mashup trailer for you to watch! It comes from Darth Blender and it features a mashup of footage from several classic superhero films that were made in the 80s and 90s. I'm sure you'll remember some of these if you were up to speed with what Marvel was doing during this era. Below the video, you'll find a list of all the films that were used and all the characters that the actors are meant to play.
I love that Chuck Norris in The Punisher! It also features Burt Reynolds as Iron Man, David Hasselhoff as Nick Fury, Jean-Claude Van Damme as Winter Soldier, Dennis Quaid as Star-Lord, Eddie Murphy as Falcon and more!

We’re currently in a boom period for superhero films, with plenty more on the way. It’s the golden age for comic book fans. Characters like Wonder Woman, Dr. Strange and the Justice League are all coming to theaters, joining established franchises like Thor and Captain America. But some of you may not know that these characters all had live-action movies made about them before. Cinelinx looks at 7 obscure super films you probably haven’t seen.
#1. Doctor Strange: In 1978, a two-hour made-for-tv movie aired about the master of the mystic arts. Dr. Strange was meant to be a pilot for a proposed weekly CBS TV series. Peter Hooten played Doctor Strange and Jessica Walters played villainess Morgana Le Fey. CBS was already airing Spider-Man and the Incredible Hulk and was trying to go for the hat trick, bringing the Doc to TV. However, it was not to be.

Before Marvel Studios, Samuel L. Jackson and ABC's "Agents Of S.H.I.E.L.D.", there was "Baywatch" actor David Hasselhoff delivering a 'Jack Burton'-type comic book performance in director Rod Hardy's 1998 TV movie, "Nick Fury: Agent of S.H.I.E.L.D.", produced by Marvel's Stan Lee and written by David Goyer ("Man Of Steel"), based on the Marvel Comics character, inspired by the illustrations of Jim Steranko, with actress Sandra Hess as 'Andrea von Strucker' aka 'Viper'.
"I was the first 'Nick Fury'", said Hasselhoff.
"...'Nick Fury', retired, is approached to return to duty to take down agents of the terrorist organization 'Hydra', led by the children of 'Baron Wolfgang von Strucker', an old enemy of his. Hydra has reconstituted a pathogen known as the 'Death's Head' virus, and threatens to attack Manhattan with it, barring payment of Us $1 billion..."

(Cbr) "I single handedly put together the Marvel slate," says Avi Arad. Avi Arad has been involved with Marvel TV and film adaptations since the '90s. While he's still heavily involved in Marvel properties -- most recently as a producer on the freshly released "Amazing Spider-Man 2" -- he has not been credited on an in-house Marvel Studios production since 2008's "Incredible Hulk," where he served as a producer. However, in the wake of a Bloomberg Businessweek's April profile on current Marvel Studios head Kevin Feige, Arad has reportedly publicly released a letter (posted by Latino Review, originally published by DailyMars.net) sent to the profile's author, claiming responsibility for the success of Marvel Studios, and taking issue with a particular section in the Businessweek profile that stated his resignation in 2006 was as a result of "doubts about the strategy" to create the independent studio. The text of Arad's publicly released letter follows in full.

Star Wars Rebels composer Kevin Kiner gives an interview on the influence that composer John Williams has had on him and the score of the animated TV Series. Kiner talks about his huge guitar collection and how having been in a rock band allows him to add something different to the score of Rebels. We even get to hear some temp tracks in development and how Kiner mixes in Williams touches from the score of Star Wars: A New Hope.
Rebels acts as a bridge between the time periods of Revenge of the Sith and A New Hope and it's really interesting to hear some of those familiar melodies come back, in some part, into the show.
I couldn't help checking out Kiner's IMDb page and over the years he has done the score for a lot of TV and a few video games. Some notable projects other than the aforementioned are Stargate Sg-1,...

David S. Goyer has made a career telling superheroes' tall tales. The writer of "Man of Steel," all three "Blade" films, and co-writer of "Batman Begins," Goyer also had a hand in "The Dark Knight" and "The Dark Knight Rises" as well as the short-lived "Blade" television show and "Nick Fury: Agent of Shield" TV movie. So, at first, it was somewhat surprising when the Michigan native signed on to create and be the showrunner of "Da Vinci's Demons" a few years back. Why not a superhero show, if he was going to write for television again? Heading into the season two premiere this Saturday, March 22 at 9pm on Starz, Indiewire sat down with Goyer to discuss his attraction to heroic figures, the differences between writing for movies and TV, and why Iron Man and Batman wouldn't exist without Leonardo Da Vinci. In the early 90s Full Moon dipped their toe into the giant-robot market with three films that, in the intervening years, have gained somewhat of a cult following – Robot Jox, Crash and Burn and this latest DVD release from 88 Films, Robot Wars.
Toward the end of the 21st Century two great powers dominated the world, a division that resulted from a 30-year war known as the War of the Hemispheres. The war came to an end with the creation of giant, indestructible mega-robots designed for military missions and balance of power. Recently, the mega-robot has become a tourist attraction and is used for tours through the wasteland. While on one such tour, the Mras-2 is attacked by an extremely violent terrorist group known as the Murdaggians.

So to bring you up to speed if you're not be in the know, David Hasselhoff once played the character Nick Fury in a made-for-tv-movie called Nick Fury: Agent of Shield. Since the release of the movie Avengers Hasselhoff has taken any and all opportunities to slam Samuel L. Jackson's portrayal of the character. His most recent interview with Yahoo movies holds claims that Stan Lee called him the "ultimate Nick Fury."
"Stan Lee put me in that. He gave me the best line ever: 'Guys like you tend to cling to the bowl no matter how many times you flush'. Stan Lee came on the set and told me all about Nick. He said, 'you're the ultimate Nick Fury."
He then goes further, discrediting Jackson's performance and forgetting Joss Whedon's name.

Baywatch star David Hasselhoff, who once played Nick Fury in a made-for-tv film, says that Samuel L. Jackson was just “not Nick Fury”. Hasselhoff feels he should have been cast in the Marvel cinematic films and would like to play Fury again.
How many people know about—let alone have actually watched—the 1998 made-for-tv film Nick Fury: Agent of Shield, which starred David Hasselhoff as the eye patch-wearing director of Shield? Well, Hasselhoff wants people to remember, because in a recent interview with Yahoo!Movies, he claims that his interpretation of the character was superior to Samuel Jackson’s theatrical version.
The Baywatch and Knight Rider star says, "I was the first Nick Fury. Stan Lee put me in that... Stan Lee came on the set and told me all about Nick. He said, 'You're the ultimate Nick Fury'. He gave me the greatest line ever: 'Guys like you...

Sneak Peek in its entirety, actor David Hasselhoff in director David Hardy's 1998 TV movie, "Nick Fury: Agent of Shield", based on Marvel Comics character 'Nick Fury', written by David Goyer ("Man Of Steel"). Also starring is Lisa Rinna as 'Contessa Valentina "Val" Allegra de Fontaine' and Sandra Hess as 'Andrea von Strucker' aka 'Viper'.
"I was the first 'Nick Fury'", said Hasselhoff in a recent interview.

During an interview that's all too similar to Lou Ferrigno saying that his Hulk is the best Hulk there is, actor David Hasselhoff spoke with Yahoo Movies and reminisced about playing Nick Fury in the 1998 TV movie Nick Fury: Agent of Shield versus Samuel L. Jackson's 'ultimate' portrayal of the character in The Avengers movies. "I was the first Nick Fury," he said. "Stan Lee put me in that. He gave me the best line ever: 'Guys like you tend to cling to the bowl no matter how many times you flush'. Stan Lee came on the set and told me all about Nick," he added. Last May, when David Hasselhoff was doing press for Piranha 3Dd he bitterly proclaimed to movieline that his Nick fury, from 1998's TV movie, Nick Fury: Agent of Shield, was the "Ultimate" portrayal of the character. "“I love Sam Jackson, but you know… my Nick Fury was the organic Nick Fury that was written and discussed with Stan Lee before anyone got in there to change it. Nick Fury was written to be tongue-in-cheek, and he had a cigar in his mouth, he was a tough guy — he was cool. Stan Lee said, ‘You’re the ultimate Nick Fury. Avi Arad, when they bought it, said, ‘Don’t worry, you’re going to be the Nick Fury forever,’ and they lied. [Pause] But that happens to me all the time. That’s when you realize life isn’t fair." - David Hasselhoff While Samuel L. Jackson has played S.H.I.E.L.D. agent Nick Fury in Iron Man,...

Few figures in comic book lore command the attention and devotion of Stan Lee. Now in his late eighties, with a grey-white caterpillar of a moustache perpetually perched atop his upper lip and oversized, dark-tinted glasses, he’s an easily identifiable character, as iconic as one of his pop culture creations (Fantastic Four, Spider-Man and the X-Men, to name a few), and just as important. But many don’t know the story behind the man. “With Great Power: The Stan Lee Story,” a zippy and somewhat superficial documentary, attempts to fill in some of that backstory, and the result is as compulsively entertaining and colorful as any Marvel comic book. Excelsior!
After some sound-bite-y clips from various celebrities (including Paris Hilton, who groaningly calls him “hot”), the film moves ahead briskly, following, more or less, the typical biographical documentary format – lots of talking heads interspersed with historical footage and (in...

Comic book fans are enjoying a pop cultural revolution with the onslaught of mainstream comic book movies, in particular from that old house of ideas - Marvel. Across the past 5 years we have seen Spider-Man, the X-Men, Hulk, Punisher, Iron Man, the Fantastic Four, Thor and Captain America all make the leap from the printed page to the silver screen.
Marvel’s slate of movies comes to its first filmic climax when a host of the Hollywood-ised Heroes band together for Joss Whedon‘s the Avengers in May this year. Hot on its heels are already announced sequels to Iron Man, Thor, Spider-Man, Captain America, Wolverine again, rumours of another Fantastic Four… hang on. We’ve already seen this bunch before. In some cases too much (anyone remember X-Men 3?).
I don’t know about you, but I want to see something new. Something different. Marvel has literally hundreds of franchise-able...

Depending on how devoted you are to the world of comic books, you may or may not know that Captain America: The First Avenger won't be the first live-action adaptation of the patriotic hero's exploits. Back in 1990 (oh, so long ago), Director Albert Pyun made a campy Captain America film starring Matt Salinger as the titular avenger and Scott Paulin as the Red Skull with Ned Beatty, Ronny Cox, and Kim Gillingham rounding out the cast. While it's nowhere near as hard to get a copy of 1990's Captain America as it is the 1994 Fantastic Four and it's not nearly as bad as David Hasselhoff's Nick Fury: Agent of Shield, it's been a hard to find title up until now, or rather July 19th, when MGM will release it as part of their Limited Edition Collection that has so far seen the likes of The Destructors, The Call of the Wild,...

I hesitated posting the first bit of news this week in regards to the new cable series "Powers" and "100 Bullets" simply because they aren't very well-known outside of the more hardcore comics community. Which is kind of strange, really, considering they would be good fodder for recruiting n00bZ into the fold. Hence TV adaptations, perhaps?

It's been a bad week for entertainment industry deaths, with "A-Team" and "Rockford Files" writer/producer Stephen Cannell joining a list that already included Greg Giraldo, Tony Curtis, Arthur Penn and Sally Menke. Patton Oswalt took note and proposed a tribute on his account.

Frankie Muniz was not amused today about a statement from Shia Labeouf in which the "Wall Street 2" star said that many of his films could have swapped Muniz into his roles and still been hits. It was an odd comment, but Muniz cleared the air with his own thoughts on the matter.
In other tweets, the deaths of Greg Giraldo and Tony Curtis put dampers on a lot of moods. Steve Martin, James Gunn and others contributed to the collective obituaries for the comedian and actor, though Gunn's memories may be pretty unique in the scheme of things. We've all been groaning over the possibility of Ghost Rider 2. Johnny Blaze has a lot of fans out there, and none of them were happy with the way Nicolas Cage or Mark Steven Johnson handled him the first time around. Even the news that David S. Goyer was writing the script wasn't cause for celebration, as The Dark Knight just can't erase Nick Fury: Agent of Shield. But now Ghost Rider 2 has hit a roadblock. It may have lost Nicolas Cage.
According to Vulture, Columbia needs to get Ghost Rider 2 up and running fast. It isn't just that they need a blockbuster for 2011 after rebooting Spider-Man. Their Marvel contract is up, and if Ghost Rider 2 isn't in production by November 14, 2010, they lose all rights to the character. They're reportedly asking Marvel for an extension, but we all know Marvel wants those characters back. Kevin Feige & Co...

We're seeing more and more comic books and graphic novels being adapted for the big screen and, even with varied results at the box office, the trend shows no sign of stopping.
This is largely because established titles come with a devoted fanbase while newer publications are akin to film storyboards that give studios a clear visual idea of the project.
Only recently I have twice reported on a number of comics that are being picked up by film bosses, and you can see those round-ups here and here.
I talked about the craze to comic book writer and artist Al Davison, who runs The Astral Gypsy graphic novels shop and art studio in the Canal Basin here in Coventry.

You kids today, with your Marvel Studios and your top-notch directors. Many of you are too young to remember just what ugly treatments comic books received in the 1980s and 1990s. Oh sure, there was Tim Burton's Batman, but treatments like David Hasselhoff's Nick Fury: Agent of Shield were the norm. When a Thor movie was kicked around, the only requirement was muscles and blonde hair. In the 1990s, there was one man that fit that description: Fabio.
A funny little flashback has surfaced on Colleen Doran's blog, which has prompted a delightful trip back in time at Mania. In 1997, Fabio decided that he wanted to play Thor, so he approached animation director Seth Kearsley, and they cooked up a storyline with the help of Henry Gilroy. As Mania points out, this was not a Marvel movie , but it casually borrowed a few elements. The result, pictured to your right,...
