Ever wonder just how realistic a big screen bank heist is? Well, there’s really only one way to find out – Ok, two, but we don’t recommend participating in one – and that’s by asking an actual bank robber. According to Cain Vincent Dyer, who took part in over 100 bank robberies over the course of two-and-a-half years, the one from 1991’s Point Break is a 10/10 example…even if it did have its flaws.
Dyer heaped much praise on the time frame that the group laid out in Point Break, saying 90 seconds would be ideal for grabbing and going before the police arrive. “Typically, once you go into a bank and the alarm is set, depending on where law enforcement is in relation to the bank, it’ll typically take about a minute and a half. You have a group of guys that are all going after the drawers, and...

Primal Scream frontman Bobby Gillespie and Jehnny Beth are an odd coupling — he’s prone to loose, decadent, druggy overtures while she actually screams primally — and their differences become even more apparent on Utopian Ashes, a concept album of sorts that they made together about two lovers’ preamble to a divorce. And like any couple in disarray, the Venn diagram of their respective worlds seem only to intersect barely. When they do, it can be beautiful; when they don’t, it’s uncomfortable to be around, yet even then their...

Fascinating backroom politics circa WWII are undermined by banal marital melodrama in Danish director Christina Rosendahl’s “The Good Traitor,” resulting in a so-so period drama that raises more questions than it answers. The film centers on the life of diplomat-gone-rogue Henrik Kauffmann, who was posted to Washington, D.C., as Danish Ambassador in 1939. When the Nazis occupy Denmark on April 9, 1940, Kauffmann declares himself the only true representative of the free Danish people and goes on to make a number of high-risk autonomous decisions that, in the long run, help to free his homeland. Unfortunately, the details of Kauffmann’s wheeling and dealing are continually undercut by the film’s concentration on his rather unusual personal life, rendered here in trite narrative clichés.
During a long and distinguished foreign service career, Kauffmann enabled the U.S. to install strategic military bases on Greenland (an autonomous territory of Denmark) during WWII.

Screen Australia.s decision to hand back the rights of 1,200 titles to the producers, effective July 1, will result in the reissue on DVD and pay TV of some films and TV productions that have long been out of circulation.
While few if any producers expect to get rich from regaining the rights, the move has been widely welcomed.
The agency has clarified that the concession applies to all projects, including features, miniseries, series and telemovies funded by the Film Finance Corp. and during Screen Australia.s first year, that were released or broadcast in the seven years prior to December 31 2008.
The handover has been brought forward by six months. All rights minus a 1% copyright fee revert back to producers.
Producer Matt Carroll is looking forward to exploring the potential of new revenue sources for Passion, his 1993 drama about composer Percy Grainger, which starred Richard Roxburgh. Beyond Films handled the film directed by Peter Duncan.

MELBOURNE, Australia -- A group of Adelaide's leading film companies have joined forces to create an industry association known as the United Film Group in order to enhance the performance of the South Australian film industry in the Australian and international marketplace. The members of the group, whose ranks include Scott Hicks, producer Mark Patterson, and director Craig Lahiff (Black and White, Heaven's Burning), aim to forge a focal point for the industry in South Australia that can identify and respond to issues of interest and concern. "Adelaide (the state capital and largest city) has established itself as a filmmaking city and the UFG represents a bold initiative to take the multimillion-dollar industry to another more successful level," said UFG spokesperson, director Mario Andreacchio, whose credits include Napoleon and Paradise Found.
