Arlo Guthrie took to Facebook on Friday to announce his retirement from touring.
In a lengthy post titled “Gone Fishing,” the folk singer-songwriter explained that he’s canceled his upcoming show. He also revealed that prior to the pandemic, he’d experienced several mini strokes — the first occurring in 2016.
“I got really dizzy in the parking lot of the hotel, and started seeing as though I were looking through a kaleidoscope,” he said. “That evening the show went on as though nothing had happened. I had no idea I’d...

It doesn't get a whole lot cuter ... Chris Pratt put up his "Gone Fishing" sign on his trailer where he's filming "Jurassic World 2" for an outing with his son. Chris showed his casting skills in Honolulu Monday as 4-year-old Jack watched attentively. Chris is a well-known hunter but this time around he happily walked away from the stream empty-handed. The "Guardians of the Galaxy" star reeled in a small barracuda, which he quickly released. The...

The Übergeek. The Boy With All the Toys. The Lord of the Nerds. It might seem as if the most significant achievement of Jeffrey Jacob "Jj" Abrams, screenwriter, actor, producer, director, composer and author, is to have made fanboy culture part of the mainstream. But the publication of "his" first novel – more on those inverted commas anon – also shows that the avant garde and the experimental are in the ascendant. The fusion of popular culture and continental philosophy – works which are as au fait with Foucault as with the Flash, Boba Fett and Baudrillard, Kierkegaard and Kirk – are everywhere, from the novels of China Miéville, Michael Chabon and Scarlett Thomas, to the comics work of Grant Morrison and Mike Carey, to TV shows such as Agents of Shield.

Generally, screenwriting is reserved for a thankless group of nerds who spend most of their waking hours making "Star Wars" references and lamenting their low position on the Hollywood totem pole.
But once in a while, the ladies and gentlemen behind the scripts end up becoming household name ... or move on from other successful careers to take a stab at screenwriting. And whether it's to make a buck, help out a buddy or take on a new challenge, these scribes sometimes end up scoring some pretty unexpected gigs.
So, upon the revelation that titan of twist M. Night Shyamalan was allegedly though perhaps wasn't after all involved in writing "She's All That" (1999), a movie about how beautiful women become even more beautiful when they take off their glasses and wear their hair down, we've assembled a list of some other well-known writers whose names are attached to some surprising projects.

Hollywood loves to categorise people. As every actor and director knows, it is all too easy to get pigeonholed on the back of a single successful film or an early role taken purely to pay the bills. Inside many daytime soap stars are Shakespeareans longing to play Hamlet. Perhaps some of the best action film directors, in their dark moments of the soul, will be kept awake at night by a gnawing urge to direct a low-budget independent film of deep artistic worth.
This is, after all, the industry that developed the star system, whose scripts are ruthlessly fine-tuned to appeal to...

Fox is bringing back Ben and Kate according to The Futon Critic. The network is slotting the cancelled comedy into Saturday nights at midnight, starting April 27th. The sitcom will air for five weeks in late night.
Unfortunately, they plan to show reruns of Ben and Kate, not the three original episodes that haven't aired yet. There's still no word on what will become of "Gone Fishin'," "Father-Daughter Dance" and "Ethics 101."
After the Ben and Kate run, Fox plans to air reruns of The Goodwin Games (which premieres in primetime on May 20th).
The network's "Animation Domination High-Def" programming will start running beginning July 27th. That will be comprised of new animated series like High School USA!, Axe Cop, and an untitled Lucas Brothers Project.

If I’m reading their website correctly, DC Entertainment currently publishes three different Green Lantern titles, not counting the animated series tie-in. There is also a Red Lantern comic. The last several company-wide crossovers involved the Green Lantern Corps as major players.
It’s too much.
Don’t get me wrong. I like Green Lantern. I vividly remember when I bought my first copy. I was about eight years old (which would make it 1961, for those of you keeping score), and felt very grown up. I thought Green Lantern, being a science-based character, was much more intellectual than Superman or Batman at the time, with their dog pals and mischievous imps. Hal Jordan wasn’t a millionaire playboy nor an alien. He was a test pilot. He had a job.
A decade later, when Denny O’Neil and Neal Adams took over the title, I was mesmerized. They were using a character (one whom,...

In case you hadn't heard, the Academy Awards are on ABC this Sunday. Regardless of what you think of the nominees, it is clear that the film business is at a crossroads. Fewer people went to the movies in 2011 than any year since Al Gore invented the internet; our nation's multiplexes are in the throes of an epidemic called sequelitis; and the Academy could barely settle on a host for Sunday's Oscars.
But this week, my focus is on the most vulnerable members of the Academy: The Actors. Actors have more at stake than anyone at this annual bacchanalia -- their faces are the most recognizable and their personas are most associated with the success or failure of a film. And, even more perplexing and daunting: winning an Oscar may actually be more hazardous to an acting career than losing. Winning an Oscar puts more of a microscope on an actor than dating Leonardo DiCaprio.

Nearly 500 Taliban prisoners have tunnelled their way out of an Afghan prison, but how does their feat match up to those other great breakouts?
One would not want to be the governor of Sarposa prison in Kandahar, southern Afghanistan, just at the moment. To lose one Taliban prisoner may be regarded as a misfortune; to lose 475 looks like carelessness. Perhaps Easter Mondays are especially sleepy in Afghanistan, but to allow the Taliban to spend five months digging a 320-metre tunnel, and then four and a half hours getting the entire political wing of the prison through it and into a fleet of waiting cars does look like an Everest among security lapses.
But where does it rate among the great prison escapes? We have assessed the most memorable prison breaks of all time and given them marks for ingenuity, daring, degree of difficulty and myth-making. The top mark in each category is 25. On this system,...

Read more after the jump. Burton began performing professionally in 1980 at the age of twenty, and has since become a huge star in the magic world. Mel Gibson -- Gone Fishin'
If you're looking for Mel Gibson, we've learned he's on a family fishing trip -- and Oksana Grigorieva and her attorneys are none too happy.
Sources tell us Mel has been out of the country all week fishing with 2 of his sons. We've learned Oksana's laywers tried to schedule Gibson's deposition -- for the ongoing child custody battle -- right smack in the middle of his trip. The depo's been delayed since Mel is unavailable.
According to sources, Oksana's people think the delay is evidence that Mel is not committed to Lucia -- but we're told Oksana's lawyers knew Mel was away when they set the date.
Sources say Mel will be front and center for his deposition in short order.

Today’s I’m A Celebrity Bush Battle saw the remaining celebrities from Exile compete in a game entitled Gone Fishing. To earn a place in Base Camp and immunity from the public vote, the camp mates had to stop the float from touching the water by winding the reel when necessary. They were given a toadstool and fishing rods to guard.
The last one’s rod to touch the water is the winner.
The celebrities took their positions and there was no talk this time about quitting. Sam was the first out, followed by George who had previously taken time out to go to the loo, returning to his toadstool with his trousers round his knees. Gino was then disqualified for not playing the game properly, a decision that he was not happy about.
Lucy and Kim continued to battle it out for a place in Base Camp which resulted in a draw.

The exiled celebrities had taken part in a game called 'Gone Fishing', in which they had to guard a rod and stop its float from touching the water by winding the reel. Sam Fox was the first celebrity to lose the contest, followed by George Hamilton, who had taken time out to go to the toilet. Meanwhile, Gino D'Acampo was disappointed when he was disqualified. Officially, 50 Cent just told us that Before I Self Destruct is now slated for a September 29 release, the last Tuesday of that month. But as we've become accustomed to, Fif can drop an album anytime he wants. A street album. 50 does what no other artist who has sold the amount of records or gained the mainstream fame he has will do: consistently give free product back to the core who launched his career. In just the last couple of weeks, he hit with two dope bodies of work, War Angel LP and Forever King, and is probably going to drop two more joints before the album comes out. Fif explained to us...

Welcome to the weekly Newsroom Poll, where we will give you a sneak peek into the lives and minds of some of the correspondents, writers, editors and producers here at MTVNews.com. Every week, they'll answer a poll question that will reveal some of what we talk about behind the scenes here in the newsroom. Enjoy!
Nothing gets us excited like a good list, so when MTV News' James Montgomery made a list of the best albums of 2009 so far, it sparked a ton of debate amongst the staffers here. We also had long talks about whether or not Drake's mixtape really is the greatest we've heard so far this year. All this back-and-forth led to this week's question: What's the best song of the first half of 2009?
Joel Hanek
Even though the mixtape this song debuted on Kanye's blog last summer, I'll have to go with Kid Cudi's "Day N' Nite.

Let the debate begin, or continue. You may have noticed that we spark conversation around these parts. On Thursday (July 16), the Mixtape Daily family declared that Drake's So Far Gone is the hottest mixtape of 2009 thus far. That didn't sit well with some fans who are passionate about their favorite tapes as well. Personally, I think people just love to debate. We could have posted that Notorious B.I.G. used to live in Brooklyn, and some people would have written in to say we're wrong. It's all good, though. Whatever we put out there on the Internet, we stand behind, but we are interested in other opinions and always encourage readers to chime in.
"This Bs is really nauseating," Formula_50 commented on the site. "G-Unit has been smashing the mixtape game consistently.

Okay, so the proverbial "Gone Fishin'" sign is still up here at AfterElton.com. (We'll be back January 5th). But it's New Year's Eve in Oakdale and we couldn't let that pass without an As the World Turns video clip update.
The show starts off with Lucinda in her best bra and panty set trying to entice her closet case husband into bed. For his part, Brian Wheatley is doing everything he can to avoid sleeping with his wife. Failing that, he's going to get himself good and liquored in order to do the deed.
Meanwhile, Noah has arranged a very romantic evening with his on again off again boyfriend Luke. If all goes as planned, then tonight the boys will finally consummate their relationship. But this is Oakdale and rarely does anything go as planned. Before the night is through someone is going to get sucker punched. (And not in a fun way.

- First time feature filmmakers Steve McQueen’s Hunger and Martin McDonagh’s In Bruges are the toast of the 11th British Independent Film nominations this year -- each share a total of seven nominations a piece, while Danny Boyle’s Slumdog Millionaire has a total of six noms in five categories and should be a serious contender in at least the screenwriting category. I’d be surprised if the votes get split equally between McQueen and McDonagh’s respective pictures, Cannes-winning Hunger carries some serious critical weight behind it. Best acting nods should go to Sally Hawkins and Michael Fassbender should come ready with a speech in hand. Here is the complete list of noms:… British Independent Film"Hunger""In Bruges""Man on Wire""Slumdog Millionaire""Somers Town" Actress Vera Farmiga, "The Boy in the Striped Pajamas"Sally Hawkins, "Happy-Go-Lucky"Keira Knightley, "The Duchess"Samantha Morton, "The Daisy Chain"Kelly Reilly,

London -- "Hunger," Steve McQueen's portrait of 1981 Ira hunger striker Bobby Sands, and Martin McDonagh's "In Bruges" led the way as nominations for this year's British Independent Film Awards were unveiled Tuesday, taking seven apiece.
Danny Boyle's "Slumdog Millionaire" followed closely with six noms, while the micro-budgeted "Shifty," directed by Eran Creevy, took five.
"Hunger," "Bruges" and "Millionaire" are each in the running for best British Independent Film, joining "Man on Wire" and "Somers Town."
But McDonagh missed out on a nomination in the best director category. The contenders for that award include McQueen, Boyle, Mark Herman ("The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas"), Shane Meadows ("Somers Town") and Garth Jennings ("Son of Rambow").
Michael Fassbender's turn in "Hunger" sees him nominated in the best actor category, where he'll face off with "In Bruges" stars Colin Farrell and Brendan Gleeson as well as Riz Ahmed ("Shifty") and...
