An Underrated Show That Fell Victim To Network Meddling
jeremycrimsonfox31 March 2019
The Weird Al Show was a kids' show hosted by Weird Al Yankovic, a famous musician who is known for his huge list of songs that are parodies of popular songs. Basically made as an attempt to call back the spirit of Pee-Wee's Playhouse, The Weird Al Show had a premise: At the start of each episode, the narrator, voiced by Billy West, would tell kids the moral of the episode, sometimes yelling the words at them, then it proceeds to the actual episode, where Al himself gets into some situation where he learns such a moral.

And yes, it only lasted 13 episodes. At the time this premiered, CBS had rebranded their CBS Kidshow block into Think CBS Kids, which was an all-E/I block made due to the FCC enacting the Children's Television Act, which required networks air three hours of educational programming per week or face a fine. With this came behind-the-scenes drama where Weird Al had to fight with network censors over stuff that was declared "I.B" (a name given to actions that the censors believed kids could imitate). This, and the fact that the show has been given random time slots that were hard to follow, got it cancelled. In fact, the Shout Factory DVD release has the commentary tracks talk about this.

But moving on, the show did do its best at being entertaining. Pee-Wee's Playhouse was known for its cast of characters, and while the Weird Al Show lacked puppets (it did, however, have Harvey The Wonder Hamster), it had its fair share of wacky neighbors like Bobby The Inquisitive Boy, Hooded Avenger, Cousin Corky, and Judy The Psychic. Also, there are many celebrity appearances and even musical groups like Barenaked Ladies, Hansen, and Al-4-One. The Weird Al Show is a rare gem that never took off due to network meddling, and it is worth a watch.

The Weird Al Show is weird thats for sure but in a good way.

Weird Al Yankovics TV show is a good comedy that if you can get your hands on a copy you should definitely watch as it has lots of scenes that had me in stitches(for example The "Grass is green" segment is so funny.)The show is about the daily life of Al and he has many adventures where at the end he learns a responsibility. The funniest bits in the show are bits from T.V or mini movies he puts on. The show has bits where it is just stupid but most of it is very funny and really quite entertaining. Overall I rate this movie pretty high even though it is not the best nor funniest show in the world it is good for quite a few chuckles so I rate it a pretty solid 73% and I hope they make more episodes one day.

Some good moments, some watered down.

The Weird Al show was a children's show that ran in 1997. Shout Factory was generous to release the full season (only season) of the parodist "Weird Al" Yankovic. This show is great for his fans and parents with children for something good to watch. People who dislike Al or never heard of him will probably not want to watch this; haters is going to hate.

CBS wanted Al to make it a children's show or keep it clean that Al have to abide to. Al did a great job abiding to the children's theme, but he probably wanted more creative control.

As for the show, it has great educational pointers for situation adhering to the children's demographic. With great guests including his mother and his friends like Judy Tenuta and music guest like Barenaked Ladies and Hanson. But the show was okay, but not to Al standards. Have you been to his concerts? He is over the top. There are some good shows, my favorite is Talent Show (with a funny Flintstone's skit). And there are some watered down episodes that just dragged like the last episode "Al gets robbed." What a sad way to end a show, bet Al was happy when it did.

With being said I bet if it had controlled by Al himself I give it a 7, 8 or 9-10. But I respectfully hand out a 6 of 10, which is fair grade. And I am a fan of Al, and I understand what he had to go through make the Weird Al show.

Sunk by a number of factors
Gislef4 April 2000
Pretty funny in general, but probably a couple of things sunk it. It was (I guess) a CBS kid's morning show, but CBS didn't bother to really include it on their Saturday morning schedule. So the affiliates that did air it showed it in dozens of different time slots.

Also, it had to be rated as "educational programming" (the "EE" or whatever), so there was always some message. Although Al managed to pretty end up parodying that every week, too.

The main problem was that folks probably didn't get it. Unlike Pee Wee Herman when Playhouse came out, Weird Al was already pretty well established. Those who didn't like him avoided the show, meaning it was basically his fans tuning in. Along with the mobile time slotting, that probably accounted for its departure after a year. Which is a shame, but there you go.

Probably only for a relatively small audience....
planktonrules13 April 2013
"The Weird Al Show" only lasted for 13 episodes. I think the biggest reason for this is that the audience for such a show was probably rather small to begin with and the network's moving the show around didn't help any. Now I like Weird Al--and even went to his concert a few months back. BUT, his weird and surreal humor just isn't the sort of thing that will appeal to most adults. And, as far as kids go, it would appeal to the strange kids out there (like me when I was young) but just couldn't compete with corporate programming. It was was too different and filled with bizarre skits and unusual guest stars--much of which would have gone over the heads of many kids.

My feeling is that before you try watching the show, get copy of Al's "UHF". It's somewhat like the show but with more polish and the skits are far less hit or miss. Then, once you know whether or not you like this sort of strange humor, find the DVDs and watch away. Overall a very good show but a definite niche show.

The Weird Al Show is one of the most remembered short-lived Saturday morning shows in pop culture.
Mark-AA8429 November 2022
I don't remember watching this program back when it premiered 25 years ago, but it's amazing that it first aired exactly 11 years after Pee-wee's Playhouse, another popular program from CBS's Saturday mornings. Weird Al previously worked on another years before on MTV, Al TV, which I don't remember watching. Well, the prince of parodies has his own show featuring a cast of characters like Hooded Avenger and Al's wonder hamster Harvey. In pretty much every episode, there is a moral lesson to learn like in one of my favorites, "Back to School," where we learn that you can't learn too many subjects all at once. In some of the episodes, you even get to see Fatman cartoons.

If you like Weird Al's music and vintage Saturday morning shows from the past, then check out this iconic program.

Below Average

To put in Weird Al context this series came out nine years after UHF and nine years before White & Nerdy. If you were hoping for UHF the show, unfortunately this disappoints, and as a grown man reviewing a children's tv show from the 90s, it's not that good. Too much all over the place, apparently the network wanted something to compete along with PeeWee's Playhouse and enforced a young intended audience on Weird Al's creative team, leaving the struggling to create something competent. A fairly generic zany kids show where nothing makes sense, theres some animated skits, a magic hamster, and a few of Weird Al's music videos from the time.

Great show

The reason I watched this show is because I'm a huge fan of Weird Al Yankovic. I think it would be cool if Nicklodeon aired reruns of this show. If this show ever comes back on and if your a big fan of Weird Al Yankovic then this is the show for you. I know I liked it.

The best "kids" show of the nineties.
davemmr28 January 2001
Why this show was cancelled so quick is beyond me. Oh yeah... the ratings. Well it's not the show's fault, it was the time slot (it was on at 8:30am on Saturdays where I live). This show was great nontheless with its take on the kid show genre in general. I still love the Bill Nye parody where everyone is singing "The Grass is Green" (you have to see it to understand) and the 80% Chance of Rain (a spoof on disaster movies). I hope they release these on tape sometime soon.

One of my favorite Saturday Morning TV shows.
Spiked_Ryuu27 August 1999
Why'd they take this show off the air. It was the'90's version of "Pee-wee's Playhouse". I am a very big "Weird Al" fan, and I was very disappointed when they took it off the air. I got the new "Weird Al" CD, and I get kind of upset when I listen to the show's theme song on the CD. They should put "The 'Weird Al' Show" back on TV.

I miss this show
SweetGirlNo96 July 1999
I miss this show it was funny, I loved the parodies of the milk ads and TV shows like Sabrina, The Teenage Fish and Mummy and Daddy, and the 50% Chance of Rain,Fatman,Harvery the Hamster and Fred Higgans, which were all hilarious i get cracked up just thinking about them also I don't remember the musical guests and there were also weird regulars, and the parodies of those 50's school film It's kind of like Pee-Wee's Playhouse only crazier. My cousin (who is 30 something year old guy) thought it was interesting because where he lived it came on before a farming program.
