Russell Johnson, the actor who played The Professor on "Gilligan's Island" for three years, died Thursday (Jan. 16) at age 89, his wife has confirmed.
"He died at home, peaceful, in his sleep at 5:21 a.m. today. [He was] a very brave guy who knew what he wanted, and he wanted to be at home," Constance Johnson tells ABC News.
Johnson was a World War II veteran who acted in shows such as "The Adventures of Superman," "Alfred Hitchcock Presents" and "The Twilight Zone." His last credited role is a 1997 guest spot on the animated series "Meego" as "The Professor."
"My 2 favorite people are now gone," writes Johnson's costar Dawn Wells, who played Mary Ann, on her Facebook page. "The Professor [passed] away this morning. My heart is broken." Bob Denver, who played Gilligan, died in 2005.
Wells also posted a vintage photo of Johnson, which you can see below:
