It takes The Matrix about three minutes to become the coolest thing you’ve ever seen. That’s when Trinity (Carrie-Anne Moss) evades a cop by breaking his arm, punching his throat, and then freezing mid-air so the camera can whip around her before she unleashes a kick that sends him across the room. Three minutes. And everything changed.
But the most impressive part may be the fact that the amazing stuff doesn’t stop there. For the 117 minutes that follow, The Matrix directors Lana and Lilly Wachowski offer an improbable mix of kung fu action, Continental philosophy, and fin de siècle cool. It’s no wonder their movie became a hit in theaters and on video. Nor is it any wonder that so, so many movies and TV shows borrowed from The Matrix, at once cementing the original film’s legacy while also cheapening its effect. In immediate years...

After Zack Snyder kickstarted his Snyderverse with Henry Cavill’s Man of Steel, fans witnessed two iconic DC characters, Batman and Superman going against one another in 2016’s Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. Believe it or not, it’s been 8 years since its release, making the movie more special with fans of live-action and comics alike.
Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice (2016)
To commemorate the eighth anniversary of Snyder’s cinematic spectacle, an X account has shared the movie’s concept art. It shows an interesting take on the main trio, particularly Gotham’s Caped Crusader.

After kicking off February with discussions of Albert Lewin’s 1945 adaptation of The Portrait of Dorian Gray (listen) and the perfectly serviceable remake of Friday the 13th (listen), we’re delving into the twisted mind of Pedro Almodóvar with his 2011 thriller The Skin I Live In.
In The Skin I Live In, skilled plastic surgeon Dr. Robert Ledgard (Antonio Banderas) has tried to develop a new super skin ever since his beloved wife was horribly burned in a car accident 12 years prior. Finally, Ledgard has created a skin that guards the body, but is still sensitive to touch. With the aid of his faithful housekeeper Marilia (Marisa Paredes), Ledgard tests his creation on Vera (Elena Anaya), a woman he keeps prisoner against her will in the basement of his Spanish mansion.
Being an Almodóvar film, there’s much more to this twisted plot than meets they eye.

Drawing inspiration from his 2006 documentary “Doctor”, “The Fourth Portrait” cemented Chung Mong-hong's prowess as one of the most significant Taiwanese contemporary directors, screening in festivals all over the world, and earning him numerous awards, both locally and internationally.
Follow our tribute to Taiwanese by clicking on the image below
Ten-year-old Xiao Xiang finds himself on his own when his father passes away. His sorrow and overall perplexion regarding his future, as much as a broken promise to the deceased lead him to create the first of the four portraits that give the movie its title. Soon, he finds himself under the wing of old janitor Chang, who tries to teach him proper manners, while pilfering from abandoned buildings in order to sustain himself and the boy. While Xiao Xiang finds some sort of balance, his estranged mother, Chun-Lan, appears out of nowhere to take him to live with her and her new husband.

Much ado has been made about Doja Cat’s fourth studio album, Scarlet, being an intentional swerve away from pop and toward purer hip-hop. Part of what distinguishes Doja’s flow is her ability to weave fluently between not just singing and rapping, but various subgenres, and while the album certainly places a premium on her rapped verses, it also cycles through a number of stylistic approaches. If there’s a notable difference between Scarlet and Doja’s past releases, then, it’s that the songwriting feels aimless, almost incoherent.
Scarlet unfolds with Doja trying out one stylistic mode for two to three songs and then moving on to the next. The infectious opener “Paint the Town Red” is arguably the album’s most pop-forward moment and functions as something of a bridge between Scarlet and 2021’s Planet Her. And “Demons” and “Wet Vagina” sport menacing beats that support Doja...

This article contains spoilers for "Gran Turismo," particularly the ending (duh).
It's the quintessential rags-to-riches tale of the 21st Century. A group of highly-skilled gamers is plucked out of digital anonymity around the world, subjected to a grueling and intensive training academy, and then placed in enormously expensive and wildly dangerous racecars to compete against much older and more experienced pros. What could go wrong?
Director Neill Blomkamp's latest feature, "Gran Turismo" (which I reviewed for /Film here), tells the shockingly true story of how Nissan and PlayStation partnered up for one of the most unbelievable stunts in professional sports history. Centered on young gamer-turned-racer Jann Mardenborough (played by Archie Madekwe), the film takes him from his gaming computer in the suburbs of Cardiff to the fastest and most difficult racetracks across the entire globe ... all thanks to the efforts of Nissan marketing executive Danny Moore (Orlando Bloom), the brainchild behind the entire venture,...

[Editor’s Note: The following review contains spoilers for “Justified: City Primeval” Episode 7, “The Smoking Gun.”]
Before handing over the long sought-after murder weapon, Trennell (Joseph Anthony Byrd) asks Raylan (Timothy Olyphant) a simple question: “You sure you can use it?” Can Raylan take this gun, a gun that could’ve saved Sweety (Vondie Curtis Hall) on more than one occasion, and use it to, if not avenge his death, then bring his killer to justice? Raylan says he can. He’s sure he can. Except, by the end of Episode 7, “The Smoking Gun,” that firearm isn’t locked up in an evidence locker or even held by law enforcement. It’s at the bottom of a river. And how it got there neatly sums up Raylan’s continued frustrations with the maddening depths of a labyrinthine Detroit legal system.
Of course, the most straightforward use comes and goes the quickest. Raylan turns the gun over to Maureen Downey (Marin Ireland), as he should,...

MSNBC’s Joy Reid went after America’s gun culture in her monologue for Monday’s “The ReidOut,” punctuating her hard-to-argue-with points with an image from this month’s NRA convention in Indianapolis, in which a young boy is seen pointing a pistol directly at a camera.
“Americans buy millions of guns a month and keep buying more, feeding a booming industry that can’t market their bloody trade in other parts of the world where they have actual gun laws, so they pump all their resources into fostering American’s sick obsession, promoting not just guns but the reckless permission to use them — legally — on fellow Americans, with barely a second thought,” Reid said.
She then went for the vugular, mocking gun-loving right-wing conspiracy theorists by wielding one of their favorite refrains.

It’s not the plane, it’s the pilot.
That line repeats several times in Top Gun: Maverick. While in context it refers to the fighter pilots in command of billion-dollar aircrafts, it could just as easily be the ethos of this sequel to the 1980s blockbuster. In a world of seamless CGI and endless comic book franchises, this latest flight into the “danger zone” places its bets on real people doing real stunts, powered not by superhero mythology but the charisma of its nearly 60-year-old star. And it actually succeeds.
Top Gun (1986) is iconic to an entire generation of moviegoers, a slick demo reel masquerading as a movie. A commercial for jet planes, beach volleyball and Tom Cruise’s charisma, Tony Scott’s movie was entirely built on surface pleasures enjoyable enough to distract from its complete lack of soul.
Those surface pleasures are still there in Top Gun: Maverick.

“Top Gun: Maverick” is not your father’s “Top Gun.”
The new movie, released a whopping 36 years after the original film, takes Tom Cruise’s Pete “Maverick” Mitchell and puts him in an unexpected scenario – training Top Gun graduates for a clandestine mission. And, unlike the original film, some of those graduates are women!
The most prominent female recruit is Lieutenant Natasha “Phoenix” Trace, played wonderfully by Monica Barbaro. Phoenix is tough and flinty; she’s been around the rest of these bozos for a while, and knows Rooster (Miles Teller), a young recruit with ties to Maverick’s past, quite well. She’s also partners with Bob (Lewis Pullman), an unassuming weapons system officer.
TheWrap spoke to Barbaro about her relationship with the original film, what it was like in the actual planes and how nobody could resist eating the famous coconut cake Tom Cruise sends for Christmas, even...

Courtesy Paramount Pictures.Dear Lawrence and Leo, It’s so good to be back! Three years away from this strange and unique festival called Cannes, and I must say I missed it. The absolutely premium venue for the year’s most prestigious international cinema, seeing these premieres at Cannes on huge screens and with crowds carries with it the electricity that makes film—and moviegoing—so thrilling.Of course, Cannes being Cannes, this giddy delight, while beautifully framed by the Riviera beachfront, is surrounded, nay, choked by the wheelings and dealings of the Marché—the simultaneous film market that makes up the largest amount of people at the festival. There, films both premiering at the festival and not are negotiated over, sold, and bought.

A majority of moviegoers feel that films released exclusively in theaters are of a higher quality than films released on streaming platforms, a new survey conducted by Fandango reveals. A study of more than 6,000 ticket-buyers found that 68 of respondents believed theatrical titles to be higher in quality than films released directly on streaming platforms, which is no doubt good news for theater chains as the summer movie season ramps up.
The same survey (which was conducted during the first quarter of 2022) found that 93 of those polled plan to see various genres of movies in theaters this year – not just superhero movies – and 85 said that premium formats like IMAX and Dolby make the moviegoing experience more enjoyable.
As for what these moviegoers plan to see this summer, Marvel’s “Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness” is this season’s most anticipated title followed by Marvel’s “Thor: Love and Thunder” at No.

“Rust” armorer Hannah Gutierrez-Reed has pushed back against Alec Baldwin’s claims in legal filings that she told him to cock the gun that accidentally killed cinematographer Halyna Hutchins, and instead accused Baldwin of violating gun safety protocols.
In a statement released Saturday by her representatives, Gutierrez-Reed said that she was never summoned by Baldwin or any producer to inspect the gun the morning of the shooting. “Hannah was not called into the Church before the impromptu gun scene rehearsal and she should have been,” the statement said, according to CNN.
“Mr. Baldwin knew that he could never point a firearm at crew members under any circumstances and had a duty of safety to his fellow crew members. Yet he did point the gun at Halyna before the fatal incident against all rules and common sense,” it continued.

Wedding bells! Ginny & Georgia actress Brianne Howey married her longtime love, Matt Ziering, on Saturday, July 24. The 32-year-old star, who opened up about their big day with People, tied the knot in Palos Verdes, Calif. in the garden of a family home. The couple, who met about five years ago, exchanged their vows with "just over 100 guests" in attendance. "It was the most beautiful feeling to be surrounded by so many people we love. Machine Gun Kelly's latest film wasn't sitting well with the brother of late rapper Mac Miller. In response to a recent announcement that the 31-year-old "Bloody Valentine" performer, who goes by Colson Baker in his acting work, is set to portray a troubled music star in the drama Good News, Mac's brother, Miller McCormick, shared a social media message seemingly criticizing the project. McCormick, who did not specifically mention Machine Gun Kelly or the film's title, appeared to take particular umbrage with the movie's title, as "Good News" was Mac's first posthumous single from his January 2020 album, Circles. Welcome to this week’s “Just for Variety.”
It’s official! Charlize Theron tells me that the script is done for the sequel to “The Old Guard,” her Netflix film adaptation of the graphic novel of the same name. Cameras will start rolling in the first quarter of 2022. The gay couple, played by Marwan Kenzari and Luca Marinelli, will be back, too. “Oh, yeah!” Theron says. “They’re definitely there.” Meanwhile, Vin Diesel tells me that he has writers working on a “Fast & Furious” spinoff for Theron’s character, Cipher. One thing the Oscar winner won’t be doing is guest hosting “The Bachelor.” You’d think producers of the romance reality show would have asked Theron, an unabashed and vocal fan of the franchise. “They have not, goddamn it,” she cracked at her Africa Outreach Project benefit. Would she do it? “No!” she said. “I’d make a terrible host.

Benny the Butcher has survivor’s remorse. When you make it out of your East Buffalo hood despite facing the same odds that brought others down, it inevitably comes with a twinge of guilt. The eighth track on his new EP The Plugs I Met 2, aptly titled “Survivor’s Remorse,” says as much. He raps: “This supposed to be success / so why the fuck do I feel stressed out and guilty?” Born Jeremie Pennick, Benny has seen his fair share of tragedy. His brother, Machine Gun Blak, was a big-time hustler...

John Krasinski sent a sweet message to his daughters Hazel, 6 and Violet, 4, while hosting the first Saturday Night Live episode of the year. The actor appeared on the Jan. 30 episode of SNL, alongside performer Machine Gun Kelly. John, who married Emily Blunt in 2010, wore a black sweater with H and V embroidered in the top left corner that had some fans speculating about the meaning behind the letters. Saturday Night Live celebrated the late Cicely Tyson during the closing of its first show of 2021.
After Krasinski and Chloe Fineman performed their final skit of the evening (a version of Disney’s Ratatouille with an adult spin), the NBC sketch show displayed an SNL title card featuring the trailblazing, Oscar-nominated actress, who hosted on Feb. 10, 1979. Joining Tyson as musical guest was the Talking Heads.
The show carried on with its traditional curtain call after the brief tribute. Tyson died on Thursday, she was 96. Her manager Larry Thompson confirmed the news but did not provide details of her death.
“I have managed Miss Tyson’s career for over 40 years, and each year was a privilege and blessing,” Thompson said in a statement. “Cicely thought of her new memoir as a Christmas tree decorated with all the ornaments of her personal and professional life. Saturday Night Live doesn’t have Donald Trump or Richard Nixon to kick around anymore. That could spell trouble.
Actor/director John Krasinski is the host of this week’s first SNL show after a month-long hiatus. Krasinski, musical guest Machine Gun Kelly, and cast member Heidi Gardner are aware of the high stakes situation facing them, as reflected in a promo released earlier.
“Big week, huge week,” Gardner says, with Krasinski adding, “No pressure, though.”
“No, I’m saying there’s tons of pressure,” Gardner says. “It’s the first show back, the first show of 2021, the first show since Trump.”
Kelly then adds, “No, no, no. She’s right. You better be funny.”
In the second promo, the group discussed Machine Gun Kelly’s stage name. Watch the clip for his stunning revelation.

The Academy will announce its list of Oscar-eligible documentaries this week, a field that counted just 82 entries in 2005; last year, there were 124. And along with this growth comes a new attribute for the much-admired/often ignored genre: Power.
Under Sheila Nevins, HBO led the way in showing how documentaries could draw audiences with nonfiction programming that’s skillful, dynamic, and relevant. Under Lisa Nishimura, Netflix upped the ante with deep-pocketed algorithms that not only proved audiences craved this content (after all, documentaries are the original reality TV), but also guided exactly where those viewers could be found, and what they wanted to see. And while social justice has always been the balliwick of documentary filmmakers, Diane Weyermann at Participant has given that niche the financing and clout it deserves.
While their business models differ, they’re all producing documentaries that might not otherwise exist, making them better and getting them seen.

By the time Ezra Edelman’s “O.J.: Made In America” aired on Espn in June, receiving near-universal acclaim from critics, Espn Films—which produced the documentary as part of the network’s popular “30 for 30” series—was already angling for attention from an Academy that, on the face of it, has nothing to do with TV. With one-week qualifying engagements at New York’s Cinema Village and Los Angeles’ Laemmle Monica Film Center, the exhaustive five-part portrait of O.J. Simpson’s life and times entered the campaign for Oscar.
It’s not alone. Of the eight other films Indiewire identifies as frontrunners in the race for Best Documentary Feature besides “O.J.: Made in America,” several have prominent connections to TV networks or streaming services: “Command and Control” (PBS); “Gleason” (Amazon); “Into the Inferno” (Netflix); “The Music of Strangers” (HBO); “Weiner” (Showtime); and “Zero Days” (Showtime). Set in 1969, “Coming Through The Rye” follows 16-year-old Jamie Schwartz (Alex Wolff), an outcast at his new boarding school, and an acolyte of author J.D. Salinger. Schwartz finds comfort and solace in Salinger’s “The Catcher in the Rye,” and deeply identifies with protagonist Holden Caulfield. Believing he’s destined to play the character, Schwartz adapts the novel into a play, but wishes to seek Salinger’s approval before staging it. He runs away from his school and picks up Deedee Gorlin (Stefania Owen), a quirky townie, to help him search for the reclusive author, played by Oscar-winner Chris Cooper. Along the way, Schwartz comes of age, and begins a journey of first love, sexual awakening, and discovering the meaning and purpose of one’s own life. Cinema’s Hidden Pearls – Part II
By Alex Simon
One of nature’s rarest items, a pearl is produced within the soft tissue (specifically the mantle) of a living shelled mollusk. Just like the shell of a clam, a pearl is composed of calcium carbonate in minute crystalline form, which has been deposited in concentric layers. Truly flawless pearls are infrequently produced in nature, and as a result, the pearl has become a metaphor for something rare, fine, admirable and valuable.
Hidden pearls exist in the world of movies, as well: films that, in spite of being brilliantly crafted and executed, never got the audience they deserved beyond a cult following.
Here are a few more of our favorite hidden pearls in the world of film:
