David Oyelowo and Kate Mara bring substance to this true story of an addict who turns to God – but the film will win no converts
Heralded as the moment when faith-based film-making gets gritty, this adaptation of Ashley Smith’s nonfiction book Unlikely Angel is a rather unremarkable account of redemption through crisis. Kate Mara plays Smith, the struggling addict held hostage by David Oyelowo’s murderous escapee Brian Nichols, with only a copy of Rick Warren’s The Purpose Driven Life to give her strength. Committed performances from the two leads provide ballast, although the inevitable Oprah coda feels a little too much like a sales pitch.

As bland as its title, Captive is an indifferent home invasion thriller in which a drug-addicted single mom is held hostage by a desperate man who’d just murdered four people. Hostage movies follow such age-old patterns that it’s rare to be surprised by one and Captive is no exception. Occasionally the genre will be transformed by brilliant filmmaking, as it was in something like The Desperate Hours or Dog Day Afternoon. Not this time. The true subject should have been given energy but all I felt while watching Captive was a big yawn.
Taking place over a single day, Captive closely follows an event that took place in Atlanta in 2005. Brian Nichols (played by David Oyelowo) was on trial for rape when he overpowered and beat a female guard, then took her gun. He calmly walked into a courtroom and fatally shot a judge and a court reporter...

A bruised, would-be thriller that’s really a oil-and-water mix of piety and paranoia, “Captive” tries to combine popcorn-crunching entertainment with higher values and holier virtues. Based on the book “An Unlikely Angel” by Ashley Smith, it’s a fictional version of the real events that occurred when Smith, a single mother and struggling addict, was held hostage in her home by escaped prisoner and multiple murderer Brian Nichols in Georgia in 2005. The film version features Kate Mara (“Fantastic Four,” “House of Cards”) as Smith, a single mom in crisis. We meet her at a 12-step meeting, she’s late for.

Update: Warner Bros. is reporting Black Mass took in an estimated $1.4 million from preshows on Thursday night. The original forecast article follows. This is a fascinating weekend. Two major titles are vying for the attention of two different audiences and are looking at a possible battle for the #1 position. Add to that Universal's premium large format-only release of Everest and we may have a lot to discuss come this Sunday. The most likely film to take the top spot is the young adult sequel Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials. The first film opened this same weekend a year ago with $32.5 million and an "A-" CinemaScore from opening day audiences. The film had strong legs domestically, not dropping more than 50% until its tenth weekend in release. Early reviews for the sequel, however, haven't necessarily been kind. MetaCritic scores put the sequel at a "40" as of this posting, fifteen points below the...

In March 2005, Ashley Smith was held hostage in her apartment by Brian Nichols, an escaped killer hell-bent on seeing his newborn son. As Nichols kept Smith captive for seven hours, the pair slowly came to a crossroads between hope and despair. Smith had bonded with Nichols by reading aloud Rick Warren’s best-selling book The Purpose Driven Life.
The new film, Captive, based on Smith’s account of the ordeal in her book Unlikely Angel, tells the story of how this one-time meth addict overcame her vices to survive through the worst night of her life and forge a new, productive path for herself. The film features standout performances from Kate Mara as Ashley Smith and David Oyelowo as Brian Nichols.
Oyelowo burst into the mainstream with his brilliant portrayal of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. in Selma (2014). He’s also showcased his considerable talent with turns in such films...

David Oyelowo is a conflicted killer on the run from police in a new trailer for Captive.
Oyelowo's latest role in hostage drama Captive is a far cry from his inspirational portrayal of Dr Martin Luther King Jr in Selma.
The actor plays accused rapist Brian Nichols in a story based on real events documented in the non-fiction book An Unlikely Angel.
Nichols went on a killing spree while escaping a courthouse during his rape trial, and took a hostage in the form of a young single mother (Kate Mara).
Directed by Jerry Jameson, Captive documents a police manhunt for Nichols as his hostage simply tries to stay alive.
David's wife Jessica Oyelowo, Michael K Williams and Mimi Rogers also star in Captive, opening on September 18 in the Us. A UK release is yet to be set.

The rise of the award-winning David Oyelowo continues with the news that Paramount Pictures has snapped up the global distribution rights to the Selma star’s latest film, Captive. The story is based on the real events that are told in the book Unlikely Angel: The Untold Story of the Atlanta Hostage Hero, by Ashley Smith and Stacy Mattingley.
Kate Mara (House Of Cards) plays the lead role of Ashley Smith – a single mother struggling with drug addiction and a battle for custody of her daughter. Smith is thrust into the spotlight, however, when prison escapee Brian Nichols forces his way into her apartment and holds her captive for seven hours. Nichols had been awaiting trial for multiple counts of kidnapping, assault and rape of a former girlfriend, when he overpowered law enforcement officers in the courthouse and shot the judge – Rowland Barnes – and a court reporter named Julie Brandau.

David Oyelowo and Kate Mara have snagged lead roles in the upcoming real-life thriller Captive, which is currently set to be helmed by TV directing veteran Jerry Jameson (Murder, She Wrote).
In Captive, Oyelowo portrays Brian Nichols, who in 2005 escaped from a courthouse jail and went on a shooting spree, killing the judge assigned to oversee his case as well as a court reporter, a sheriff’s deputy and (later) an FBI officer. Fleeing law enforcement, Nichols forced his way into the home of single mother and meth addict Ashley Smith (Mara), holding her hostage at gunpoint. The film will begin production this month, with Leonor Valera and Mimi Rogers set to co-star.
Smith’s struggle to survive is entailed in her autobiography Unlikely Angel: The Untold Story of The Atlanta Hostage Hero, which the film’s screenplay was partially adapted from by writer Brian Bird (Touched by an Angel) and newcomer Reinhard Denke.
