God's In HK
crossbow01066 September 2010
These slapstick comedies were made at a frantic pace at the time in Hong Kong, but this one is a cut above most of the rest. It stars Pak-cheung Chan as the Windfall God, who goes to earth to search for the Angel Of Nine Heaven (Christy Chung), with whom he wants to be married. To help him, he enlists Beautiful (Anita Yuen) to help find her. The catches are she has no recollection she is that angel and he can only use his power three times a day. He wins for Beautiful (the film is built on gambling, a favored past time in HK) and other things happen. He ends up being one of the contestants in a big gambling competition for which the Angel Of Nine Heave, just Christy on earth, sponsors. Will he win the girl? This is fast paced fun, sometimes over the top, but never boring. Anita Yuen is the real prize here, she's a little crazy and money seeking (also part of the plot, that humans are greedy) but she is fun in every scene. This is for lovers of HK comedy and its a little profane but not vulgar. Nonsense, but at times inspired nonsense. Just the kind of film to watch after a long day of craziness. Enjoy!

... when it's at its best; there are many long stretches. Most of the credit goes to leading lady Anita Yuen, who does an unexpected Sailor Moon impression.

"Twinkle Twinkle" presupposes some knowledge of the Chinese pantheon, and, more importantly, a big, big interest in gambling.

For me, the highlight was the closing credit sequence with its series of funny spoofs having nothing whatsoever to do with this movie, from James Bond right along.
