Heart Wrenching
daseiyi11 January 2005
This is a beautiful little movie. Kelly Chen was very unappealing as a leukemia dying victim and one can't see what the other characters see in her in the movie. No matter, Takeshi Kaneshiro proved to be extremely endearing and touching as a simple guy who selflessly helps others and touched her life and made it worth living/dying soon for. Parts of it were kind of strange and goes no where but all of the little unfortunate characters were very meaningfully sketched too. The Scottish seaman was also effectively portrayed and although the scenes in Scotland seem not to make sense it illustrates that wherever you go, there is home. No matter where you go, you still find that you want to see the people in your own life.

Kaneshiro unusually off the boil...

Warning: Spoilers
As a self-confessed kaneshiro fan, even I found this one difficult to really enjoy. Kaneshiro plays a simple, endearing and joyful guy who finds lost things for people. He is as always, upbeat and charismatic which lends a lot of presence to this film. However, Kelly Chen is not at her finest here as the daughter of a rich shipyard owner coming to terms with being diagnosed with cancer.

The two meet early in the film, and Mr. Worm (Kaneshiro) agrees to help find something that Chai Lam (Chen) has lost. In this case the lost item being a sailor called Ted (Brilliantly played by Wong). This takes them from China all the way to Scotland, with other assorted characters and 'lost & found' cases filling up the background.

The film is more perhaps about the relationship between Worm and Lam than anything lost and found. Her growing up and finding herself than anything else. It's a lovely film with a nice soundtrack and some fantastic locations with equal amounts of humour, drama and sadness. Their are times where it slows down, and some parts seem to have been inserted just for the sake of it. I did enjoy the film, but I didn't love it. Perhaps one purely for the Kaneshiro fans.

Found it!

This movie is a treasure. The beginning was a little tedious and drawn out, but I'm glad that I watched the rest of the film. The movie focuses on life and death. More specifically, it shows the richness of life despite the inevitability of death. Usually a movie with similar theme goes into a lot of tiresome pontifications, but this movie uses the subtle things of individual characters to gently convey its message. Little thing such as the mother taking care of her cripple daughter, the little girl with asthma, the kid who wants to help her mother by growing roses, and so forth. A touching little movie that will stick with you. I most definitely recommend it.

A wonderful story stitched together with small yet very powerful characters

AMAZING!!! This has got to be one of my favorite movie of all time. When I started watching it, I didn't think I would enjoy it, but what a surprise. I like the most about the many small characters in this movie, especially the 3-year-old girl and her drawing; it was so touching that I had goosebumps. The whole movie, IMHO, was "magical", all the way until the end. Most highly recommended.

beautiful in its humility

Kelly Chan played her part as a woman with cancer searching for hope. She may have been the main character, but more endearing than her rigidity and hidden self-pity is Mr. Worn's (Takeshi Kaneshiro) belief in life and it's magic.

A truly enchanting film. Strange and sporadic at times but wholly endearing.

Very Good Movie
benbntz22 March 2006
Warning: Spoilers
I saw this movie in Cantonese ten years ago and in English last night. In a nutshell, the movie is about a young girl dying, losing and gaining hope, and finding love. The movie is well made and all the main actors and supporting actors render a very good performance, including Wai Man Chen who was only 22 years old when the film was made and has been criticized for giving an unappealing performance. I am still confused with some of the images filmed in Scotland. Nevertheless, the scenes show the skills of the cinematographer and somewhat explain the character of the overseas Chinese and Lam's decision to love, return home, and fight her illness. Although Lam dies at the end, the director in the last scene magically turns the film around into a celebration of life.
