Just when you think you have seen it all, there comes a film that reminds you of how far the cinematic medium has come…And how far it can go in the right hands. And let’s face it. Bhansali is Bhansali. His visual imagery in all his earlier films from Khamoshi: The Musical to Guzaarish is comparable with the best art from any field of aesthetics.
You could say Bhansali’s cinema is the visual equivalent of Lata Mangeshkar’s singing. And you wouldn’t be wrong.
In terms of its free-flowing unmeasured operatic opulence Ram-Leela (with or without the censorial pre-fix) comes closest to the giddy high-pitched and yet miraculously controlled tempo and tenor of Bhansali’s Devdas. That too was a steeply sensuous cinematic adaptation from a literary source. Ram Leela goes to Shakespeare’s Romeo & Juliet...

Sanjay Leela Bhansali's eagerly-awaited Ram Leela was cleared on Friday by the Censor board Of Film Certification without any verbal or visual cuts.
But with a 'UA' certificate. That is to say, children can only watch Ram Leela accompanied by grownups.
All of Slb's earlier films Khamoshi: The Musical, Hum...Dil De Chuke Sanam, Devdas, Saawariya barring Guzaarish have been granted 'U' certificates.
Says a source from Sanjay Bhansali Productions, "Sanjay Sir expected a 'UA' for Ram Leela. The basic storyline is violent and there are lots of guns in the film. Having said that the Censor Board has been extremely liberal with the aggressive language and the violence. They understood the context and completely empathized with Slb's need to turn aggressive in Ram Leela."
Incidentally, Sanjay Bhansali was busy with the censoring on Friday and therefore skipped a promotional event with Ranveer Singh and Deepika Padukone at Mehboob studios.

Sanjay Leela Bhansali's team is all set to take firm legal action against the makers of the Turkish film Benim Dunyam which from the trailers seems like a frame-by-frame adaptation of Slb's 2005 neo-classic Black. Contrary to the reports and speculation on the internet that the Turkish film is actually an official remake of Black, a member of Sanjay Bhansali's production team says the filmmaker had no idea that Black was remade until a friend called to tell him about the uncanny similarities that Benim Dunyam shared in its trailer with Black. Says the source close to Slb. "The Turkish film is bolt from the blue. No one has approached Mr. Bhansali for the rights. It is an unauthorized illegal remake. Indian filmmakers are constantly accused of lifting from foreign sources. Benim Dunyam seems blatantly plagiarized version of Black." With the Turkish film poised for release on October 25, the...

That 2012 began with an overwrought hyper-melodramatic brutal and tumultuous remake of Agneepath and ended with Yash Chopra’s muted mellow all-heart-no-malice ode to romance Jab Tak Hai Jaan seems indicative of the direction that Bollywood seems headed for. The journey, as we can see, is unpredictable and largely exciting. Looking back, some films of 2012 that fetched hype-star ratings seem bloated and over-eager to please either critics or the masses, but never both. Luckily the films that were truly meritorious did get a place under the swoon.
Each year Bollywood surprises us, and not always in a good way. 2012 seems like a watershed year even by the continuously evolving standards of filmmaking set by envelope-pushing directors who have filtered into filmdom during the past years. 2012 was the year when Tigmanshu Dhulia, Sujoy Ghosh and Shoojit Sircar came into their own with films that took mainstream cinema to new heights. According to sources, Manisha Koirala is in the Us for further medical tests and treatment. The 42 year old actress was admitted to Jaslok Hospital in India a few days ago after reportedly falling unconscious. Her medical condition has not officially been made public, as Manisha has requested privacy from the media and from the public during this understandably difficult time for her. One source gave the following brief statement to a leading Indian newspaper: “Given her condition, she is fine and we are hopeful she will come out of it.”
Manisha recently made a comeback with Ram Gopal Varma’s Bhoot Returns. She initially debuted in Subhash Ghai’s Saudagar (1992), where she starred alongside legendary actors Dilip Kumar and Raaj Kumar. Yes, it’s true – your eyes are definitely not deceiving you, Kareena Kapoor Aka Bebo, was the original and first choice for legendary director Sanjay Leela Bhansali, (who brought you films such as Khamoshi: The Musical, Devdas, and Black), rather than second choice, Aishwarya Rai-Bachchan. His films are seen as paintings. They encompass huge canvases which actors of all calibers want to merely be a part. But Sanjay Leela Bhansali is a picky man. He believes in choosing the best and because they tend to be at his disposal, he can do just that. Many are unaware of some old dated facts that Slb speaks very little about. For starters, he was closely involved in the making of the critically acclaimed Parinda and 1942: A Love Story. However, when he refused to direct the Bobby Deol flop film Kareeb, he found himself in a fall out with Vidhu Vinod Chopra and thus, shifted loyalties and debuted as a director with Khamoshi: The Musical. While the film failed at the box office, it went onto receive immense critical accolades. However, Sanjay Leela Bhansali had arrived.
