According to a recent report from Soapcentral, we’re about to see a new male arrive on the scene for CBS’s hit soap opera show “The Bold And The Beautiful.” The crew has decided to hire former Happy Days actor Don Most (above) to come on and play a character named Pete. If any of you watch Happy Days, Don played character Ralph Malph on the show. Getting back to the Pete character, Soapcentral says he’ll be a handyman that arrives to help spruce up the Spectra Fashions building after a fire breaks out. Don recently talked to TV Insider and gave them a little more intel about his Pete role saying, “It's an old building and there's something very dicey going on with the electrical wiring. Pete keeps telling them he's no expert, but they don't want to spring for a real electrician. And then they hire him back a second time!

“A movie with a fowl bite!”
When Luther (Carlton Williams, in his only role) was a young boy, he witnessed a group of rowdy locals egging on the local Geek (Tom Brittingham, also in his only role) to bite the head off a chicken. This combined with him getting his teeth accidentally knocked out by one of said locals in the ruckus leads young Luther to develop a taste for blood. Naturally, this turns him in to a bloodthirsty psycho and paves the way for a life of crime. After serving 20 years and thanks to prison board member Mrs. Butler (Karen Maurise, Dark Skies), a much older and balder Luther (Edward Terry, The Children) is set free. Gotham/Principal and Stellar Productions are teaming for the alien-abduction story "Captured" about the first Americans to report that they were kidnapped by aliens.
The story deals with Betty and Barney Hill, an interracial New Hampshire couple who said they were captured by a UFO in 1961, studied by extraterrestrials, and then returned to Earth with missing memories later retrieved under hypnosis.
Bryce Zabel ("Dark Skies") and Jackie Zabel will produce the film which will incorporate the Cold War paranoia and race relations struggle into its narrative.

After helping many a teenage lad through their formative years as Seven of Nine on Star Trek: Voyager back in the day, Access Hollywood reports that the lovely Jeri Ryan will guest star on the CW's Arrow. It seems she'll play a character created just for the show (unless some of you DC Comics fans know differently?) named Jessica Danforth, who the site describe as "a friend of the Queen family. Her political ambitions will place her in the crosshairs of a menacing antagonist." Ryan has also appeared on the likes of Boston Public (2001–04), Dark Skies (1997) and the legal drama series, Shark. She's set to make her debut in the second episode of Arrow's fourth season, "The Candidate", which will air on October 14.

While Miss America hasn’t bred any headline-stealing celebrities recently, beauty pageants were once a place where future stars got their start. Oprah was Miss Black Tennessee; Halle Berry was Miss Ohio. Vanessa Williams made it all the way to the top, nabbing the Miss America title in 1984.

Released at the height of the straight to video techno-horror phase that rode in on the coat-tails of The Lawnmower Man and also saw the release of films such as Evolver and Brainscan, Arcade was, I think, unfairly overlooked, at least in the UK, at the time due to poor distribution, a lack of big-name stars (unlike Brainscan which had a post-T2 Edward Furlong, the biggest stars in Arcade were A Christmas Story’s Peter Billingsley and St:tng’s John De Lancie), and effects that – even though they were apparently redone after the film was completed – did not compare to other CGI-heavy films at the time.

As you may know, we here at SciFi Mafia are major, elemental, over-the-top, gushing fans of the smart, creepy, completely addictive Helix. After last week’s addition of Jeri Ryan as the teeth-filing Constance Sutton, we all have even more questions.
Ms. Ryan and showrunner Steven Maeda spoke with media outlets last week about the character and the show, and to start, I asked her what drew her to the role:
Jeri Ryan: You know, it was fun – well the concept of the show to begin with was sort of intriguing to me. I hadn’t seen any of it at that point because it was just being shot. I loved the people that were involved in it. So that was all really cool. And then when I sort of was hearing a little bit more about the character and I was seeing how she was written, then it was fun…...

If you aren’t watching Helix yet, you need to get on board with the Syfy spectacular. It’s absolute crazy fun, and starting tonight, Jeri Ryan is joining the show. She was available for an interview recently, along with Exec. Producer Steve Maeda, and they shared some interesting notes about her character and the show. Unfortunately, as you might guess, much of the conversation revolved around things which can’t be revealed, and the pair of them sidestepped questions with great frequency.
Check it out below, and be sure to tune in Fridays at 10:00pm. The show is doing great, and it is edge of your seat intensity every step of the way.
When we first see Sutton, she pretends to be this nice woman who’s there to help, and we know this isn’t true pretty quickly. Can you talk about playing the more cold, calculated side?...

This show Helix is looking really, really promising. SciFiMafia.com attended a set tour and panel Q&A session last week in Montreal – more about that in the days to come – and this show could fill a real void in the science-fiction thriller arena. Executive producer Ronald D. Moore (Battlestar Galactica) wasn’t at the panel session, but he did record this outline of the show which was released to attendees:
Featurette: Helix – Ron Moore on the Series
Syfy also announced during the panel that Jeri Ryan (Star Trek: Voyager) has been added to the cast. Here are the details:

Nazis, WWII, and … aliens? From Gale Anne Hurd, the producer of “The Walking Dead”, comes USA Network’s “Horizon”, a period sci-fi drama about “a female secretary at the FBI who begins a secretive investigation into files that have been stamped with the codename “horizon.” The mysterious project provides links to the death of her husband and the disappearance of a young girl, and has also – unbeknownst to her – aroused the interest of undercover Nazi spies working in the Us.” Oooh, Nazis in the U.S. during WWII! Plus, aliens! Now that sounds like a premise. The last time we got a period sci-fi drama was “Dark Skies” in the mid-90s with Eric Close and Jeri Ryan. Check out an early concept trailer that the network recently showed to journalists at their Upfront shindig. It’s still early yet on the show, and I’m not sure, but I...

Your mother always told you that math would be important someday, and we're here to validate her. Call it better living through arithmetic, but we believe simple math can help you decide which new movies coming out in February are for you.
Oh, and did we mention there are no actual numbers involved? It's like "Moneyball," but for movie-loving dummies.
So if you'd like a glimpse at what the cinema can offer you on this most romantic of months, read on for your latest lesson in Movie Math.
February 1
"Bullet to the Head"
Sly's back!
"The Haunting in Connecticut 2: Ghosts in Georgia"
More ghosts, more Southern accents.
"Warm Bodies"
Ok, so it's an undead romance...
February 8
"A Glimpse Inside the Mind of Charles Swan III"
We've got nothing, sorry.
"Identity Thief"
Yeah, we can see how you'd get these two confused.
"Side Effects"
Um, no thanks, Doc. I won't be needing those pills.

<< Continued from "February 2013 Preview"February 14Four nationwide releases crowd in to theaters on Valentine's Day, which falls on Thursday this year. Based on the franchise's track record, odds are A Good Day to Die Hard winds up being the highest-grossing entry, though Beautiful Creatures and Safe Haven also appear to be in decent shape.Over 25 years after John McClane (Bruce Willis) squared off with Hans Gruber (Alan Rickman) in the Nakatomi Plaza building, the legendary badass is making his fifth big-screen appearance in A Good Day to Die Hard. By most accounts, the three previous sequels have all failed to live up to the high standard set by the original, but that hasn't stopped audiences from coming back: in 2007, Live Free or Die Hard earned $134.5 million at the domestic box office despite middling reviews and a PG-13 rating. A Good Day to Die Hard is the biggest stretch of the...

Cassie Scerbo – in case you remember this young lady from ABC’s Make It Or Break It, you’ll be happy to hear that she’s now officially on board for an indie sci-fi thriller Dark Skies. The whole thing comes from director Anthony C. Ferrante, and beside Scerbo, the movie will also star Ian Ziering and Tara Reid. For more details about the project – check out the rest of this report!
So, at this moment we know that Ferrante directs the movie from a script written by Thunder Levin, and the whole thing will center on a divorced Venice Beach bar owner who is on a mission to find his estranged family after a devastating storm floods Los Angeles.
Beverly Hills star Ian Ziering is set to play that bar owner, while Scerbo will play the role of a bartender who helps him fight against any shark attacks along the way.

How many times did New York supercop John McClane throw out the “F” bomb in the first two “Die Hard” movies? How many bad guys did he have to whack to save how many hostages again? And oh yeah, how many times did he punch, headbutt, or otherwise get himself injured just because he was the right man at the wrong place at the right time? To celebrate the upcoming release of “A Good Day to Die Hard”, the folks at 20th Century Fox have released two very thorough infographics for the first two “Die Hard” movies. I like it. Usually when studios decide to get in on the infographic trend, it’s pretty silly. There was one for “Dark Skies” that was almost pointless. These, though, are not. Check them out and a fresh clip from the latest “Die Hard” movie, the cheekily titled “A Good Day to Die Hard” below.

The biggest title of note in today's batch of MPAA ratings is Zack Snyder's Superman film, Man of Steel, which like producer Christopher Nolan's Batman franchise is rated PG-13. No surprise there, but I'm sure some will be interested in the reason for the rating, which is "for intense sequences of sci-fi violence, action and destruction, and for some language." Whatever that could mean, I'm not too sure, but there you have it. Additionally we have a rating for Raman Bahrani's At Any Price (watch the trailer here), the upcoming thriller Dark Skies, the Weinstein's animated film Escape From Planet Earth and a late-in-the-game re-rate (well, actually just a new reason) for this Friday's comedy release, Movie 43. Finally comes a rating for a movie titled Unfinished Song, which is actually the new title for the Weinstein's Song for Marion, which was once thought as a potential Oscar contender,...

It may not seem like it, but 2012 was actually a pretty good year for horror films. (Check this piece I did for Twitch.) It just wasn't a very good year for Hollywood horror flicks. If you chose to focus on imports and indies, however, there was no shortage of quality scary flicks worth watching. But like all the best nerds, horror nerds want to know what's coming up Next! So I ran through the calendar and put together a horror cinema preview for 2013. I've actually seen a few of these (thank you, film festivals) and will include a link to my review when they come up.

Television dramas and reality shows were dark spots in an otherwise upbeat FilmL.A. report on production in the region last year.
Overall, permitted production days in the city of Los Angeles and surrounding areas coordinated by the not-for-profit organization were up 4.7 percent in 2012 over 2011. There were 46,254 PPDs last year compared to 45,484 in the previous one.
The big-spending TV drama category, however, was down 20 percent from 2011 and reality shows slipped 11.8 percent.
The overall television category fell 3.4 percent, mitigated by an increase in on-location sitcom production.
"We know that part of the decline in our TV drama figures stems from producers' desire to cut costs by filming more on studio back-lots and soundstages," Paul Audley, president of FilmL.A., said in a press release.

Next year we will see the company behind the films Dark Skies and Lords of Salem just to name a few. The newest story to come out of their camp is the official plot details for the thriller starring Ethan Hawke, The Purge. Set in a time when chaos and criminal activity is at its peak, The Purge is shaping up to be a film that walks a thin line between survival and protection. Here is the official summary released today:

Hadn’t heard about this one till tonight but I’m glad I gave it a look. I’m always a big mark for a good alien abduction yarn and this one looks pretty damn good.

Not out of your Turkey Day food coma just yet? Have no fear; I’ve sorted through all the hot new movie promotional material and picked out the delightfully riveting and laughably disastrous for you. Sit back, relax, sip some Alka-Seltzer and take a look. The Best Stuff 1. This Is 40 Red-Band Featurette: Based on its promotional campaign, This Is 40 doesn’t look like comedy gold, but there’s something about the environment and characters that’s just wildly magnetizing. The film’s brand new red-band featurette is charming to the max, suggesting the full feature may really manage to earn that 134-minute running time. Warning: The following is Nsfw. [via Yahoo] 2. With a glut of demon and haunted house movies out there, producers are always looking for a way to capitalize on a genre and try and keep it fresh. Blumhouse Productions, who have brought us Sinister, Insidious, and Paranormal Activity, are keeping the haunted house asthetic, but changing the source of the torment. Dark Skies, as you can probably guess from the title, has aliens as the antagonists. I rolled my eyes before watching the trailer, expecting it to be god awful. Instead, it...

Flight
Directed by Robert Zemeckis
Written by John Gatins
2012, USA
Premiering at the closing night of the New York Film Festival, Robert Zemeckis dives back into live-action filmmaking from a twelve year motion capture hiatus with Flight. An audacious, well-matured character ensemble piece about a man whose most heroic venture may have resulted from his most innate pitfall, this provocative drama gives Denzel Washington one of the most layered and conflicting characters of his career. The Paramount release will be a gripping arrival on November 2 for audiences, proving to be the thought-provoking robust taste many will crave by year’s end.
From the film’s very raw beginning, we are introduced to commercial airline pilot Whip Whitaker (Denzel Washngton), a middle-aged man who knows how to live life large as well as the ropes to piloting. We meet Whip lying in bed at seven o-clock in Orlando from an alcohol induced coma,...
