27 years after its initial release, Kevin Smith’s “Chasing Amy” remains a Rorschach test for questions of representation, authorship, and identity in film.
The 1997 film, which served as a comeback for Smith after his studio flop “Mallrats” threatened to derail the indie wunderkind status that he built with “Clerks,” is a distinct product of its time that offers a Gordian knot of messy questions about sexuality filtered through Smith’s distinctly male gaze. Ben Affleck stars as Holden McNeil, a New Jersey comic book writer who falls in love with Alyssa (Joey Lauren Adams in a career-defining performance), a pansexual woman who primarily identifies with the lesbian community. But their whirlwind romance can’t overcome his insecurities over her promiscuous past and the blatant homophobia of his writing partner Banky (Jason Lee), who lashes out at the relationship as a means of dealing with his own repressed homosexuality.

Real-life comic book magnate Stan Lee, much like fictional newspaper magnate Charles Foster Kane, is a jigsaw puzzle who was many things to many different people, depending on the piece of the puzzle they had. For non-comic book reading folks, he was that funny old guy who kept popping up in Marvel movies and had, apparently, even written a few comics himself. For comic aficionados, on the other hand, he was an undeniably important figure in the history of the medium, but also one who had excelled at mythologizing his personal contributions to Marvel Comics at the expense of others.
Lee was certainly an expert in the art of building an individual brand, which, in that respect, makes Kevin Smith his heir apparent. In point of fact, the filmmaker, actor, comic book writer, podcaster, and surprise transmasculine style icon is a lot like Lee in that he's arguably as famous...

As the controversial Kevin Smith movie celebrates its 25th anniversary, Dogma is getting a re-release.
The View Askewniverse director revealed that his 1999 religious satire is returning to theaters and getting a new home release after another company purchased the distribution rights from Miramax.
“The movie’s been bought away from the guy that had it for years and whatnot,” he said on That Hashtag Show. “The company that bought it, we met with them a couple months ago. They were like, ‘Would you be interested in re-releasing it and touring it like you do with your movies?’ I said, ‘100 percent, are you kidding me? Touring a movie that I know people like, and it’s sentimental and nostalgic? We’ll clean up.'”
Smith continued, “Right now, 2024 is our 25th anniversary, this year. November is when we came out. So, I think 2025 it looks like is when the movement’s going to happen there.

Kevin Smith wants Sarah Michelle Gellar to play the late Shannen Doherty's role in his 'Mallrats' sequel. The 54-year-old filmmaker has long been working on a follow-up to the 1995 cult comedy and while he planned to shelve the project after the actress - who played Rene Mosier - lost her battle with breast cancer in July, he now wants 'Twilight of the Mallrats' to serve as a tribute to her and thinks it would be appropriate to have the 'Buffy the Vampire Slayer' star step in to honour her close friend. He told The Hollywood Reporter: “Shannen’s closest friend was Sarah Michelle Gellar, and I worked with Sarah on 'Masters of the Universe: Revelation'.“So her being Shannen’s bestie and having already tried out for 'Mallrats' 30 years ago next year, I would ask Sarah to step in for...

With news that Kevin Smith could get his Mallrats sequel back on the escalator once again, we do have to wonder who will return. Sadly, with Shannen Doherty’s passing earlier this year, the role of Rene Mosier is the most up in the air. But Smith might have a card up the sleeve of his hockey jersey, saying one of Doherty’s nearest and dearest could fill in.
Kevin Smith recently told The Hollywood Reporter that he has a plan to potentially cast none other than fellow former WB star Sarah Michelle Gellar in the Mallrats sequel, allowing both Rene and the legacy of Shannen Doherty to live on. “Shannen’s closest friend was Sarah Michelle Gellar, and I worked with Sarah on Masters of the Universe: Revelation. Kevin Smith offered the latest on Twilight of the Mallrats (Mallrats 2), the long-awaited sequel to the 1995 cult film Mallrats, which starred Shannen Doherty, Jason Lee, Claire Forlani, and Jeremy London.
When discussing the potential sequel — that has been in stuck in limbo for years — during an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Smith said that after Doherty’s death in July following a battle with cancer, he considered walking away from the project all together. “My first feeling after Shannen passed was like, ‘Well, that’s it,'” he told THR.

The 4:30 Movie writer-director Kevin Smith is well aware that filmmakers are in a self-reflective phase, especially after the wake-up call that was the recent global pandemic. In the past few years alone, Kenneth Branagh (Belfast) and James Gray (Armageddon Time) have made period dramas based on their childhoods, but most notably, Steven Spielberg put out The Fabelmans in 2022, detailing how his parents’ divorce intersected with his budding filmmaking prowess. Smith’s 16th feature about his four first loves — his neighborhood movie theater, his adolescent crush and his two best friends — is already being compared to Spielberg’s most recent Oscar-nominated film.
“A lot of nice people online have been saying that [The 4:30 Movie] is kind of like The Fabelmans, and I was like, ‘Oh, that’s sweet.’ And then The New York Times was like, ‘Yeah, it’s kind of like The Fabelmans if the kid grows up to make terrible movies,...

When Kevin Smith made "Clerks" in 1994, he was only 23 and ignorant of the ways of filmmaking. Smith was inspired to make a movie by Richard Linklater's "Slacker," figuring he could write a fun screenplay based on the way he and his friend conversed. Made for only $27,575, "Clerks" was about witty but directionless twentysomethings as they struggled through their romantic angst while trapped at their dead-end jobs. "Clerks" struck a nerve with Gen-Xers, introducing a certain type of pop culture chatter that hadn't really been heard in movies before. It was a huge hit.
Smith returned in 1995 with "Mallrats," another single-day movie about twentysomethings wrestling with their romances and emotional immaturity. His 1997 film "Chasing Amy" was an unconventional romance about a straight man who falls in love with a lesbian, and how the lesbian may be developing feelings for him in exchange. Ultimately, however, the straight man's sexual insecurity causes their relationship to implode.

Veep‘s election fundraiser reunion has booked some special guests.
Joining the cast and writers of HBO’s iconic political comedy for a live table read event on Sunday are Veep creator Armando Iannucci, along with Larry David, Jason Alexander and Kevin Smith.
“We’re so thrilled to have Armando, the creator of Veep, joining us,” Veep‘s showrunner David Mandel tells The Hollywood Reporter. “And I am so excited to have my old boss Larry David along with Jason Alexander. It’s kind of like a mini-Seinfeld reunion stuffed inside a Veep reunion. Like a turducken.”
Of the filmmaker of such classic franchises as Jay and Silent Bob and Mallrats, Mandel adds, “Kevin Smith is the biggest Veep fan I know and his movies have always been as wonderfully foul as Veep, so it’s a perfect combination to have him as part of our table read!”

If you’re a fan of director Kevin Smith, you’ve probably seen movies like Clerks, Mallrats and Dogma, but one of his films has hardly been viewed by anyone at all.
In 2022, Smith released KillRoy Was Here, a low-budget horror anthology, loosely based on the World War II graffiti meme, and made with a crew of Florida film students. But the movie didn’t come to theaters, or streaming services, or even Betamax, it was issued exclusively as 5,555 NFTs on the Legendao platform, meaning the film was unavailable to watch unless you had the special “crypto key.”
Two years later, it still hasn’t been made available anywhere else.

Even Smith fans seemed pretty miffed at this arrangement, which essentially prevented them from ever watching the movie without shelling out big bucks to some crypto company.
But going the Nft route wasn’t always the plan for KillRoy Was Here.

In another world, The 4:30 Movie might have been named ‘Movierats’. Kevin Smith has long told tales of New Jersey kids simply hanging out, be it at the local shop (Clerks), the local fast-food restaurant (Clerks II), or the local mall (Mallrats). Here, he takes that template and applies it to the local multiplex — what better love-letter to cinema than a film set almost entirely at the cinema? And more specifically, the cinema of Smith’s own youth, which he now owns and operates as Smodcastle Cinemas in Atlantic Highlands, NJ? Disappointingly, for all the promise in the premise, it rarely projects in quite the way you’d hope.
In typical Smith style, this is very much a story from the heart, remixing personal experience in cinematic form — lead character Brian David (a charming and engaging Austin Zajur) is a clear Kevin Smith stand-in, a deeply nerdy kid with a passion for cinema,...

As Hollywood attempts to keep up with the ever-changing face of streaming, Kevin Smith has gotten into the movie theater business.
The director’s latest film is The 4:30 Movie, which serves as a love letter to small-town cinemas. It came at a time when he was feeling “existential” about being “one more goofy-ass tile to this never-ending wall” of film and television content on streaming platforms.
“I know it’s hard out there. It’s always been hard,” he said. “That’s the one thing I could say. But it’s worth the struggle. It’s worth the fight. Like, it’s worth making that tile, man, because that tile winds up being all the difference in some person’s life you’ll never meet.
“I meet people who tell you wonderful things about movies you’ve made years ago that other people lambast, and they’re like: ‘That’s my favorite movie.

Thirty years ago, Kevin Smith burst into the world of independent filmmaking in a blaze of glorious serendipity that nobody could replicate if they tried. Self-financed for less than $30,000 and shot entirely in the convenience store where he worked, the original “Clerks” was an electrifying mix of slacker wit and utter absurdism at a time when putting pop culture-obsessed male mediocrity on the big screen felt like a genuinely novel concept. Even after double digit viewings, the film still feels like a pitch-perfect punk rock farce that can make even the most discerning cinephile laugh out loud more than it has any right to.
None of Smith’s subsequent work caught that kind of lightning in a bottle, but quite a few of his early films were close enough to the original high to be watchable. “Mallrats” is a passable ’90s comedy, “Chasing Amy” is a clever character study anchored...

As someone who grew up loving movies in the 1980s, I can’t help but wonder if we’ll ever shut up about movies from the 1980s. Yeah, a lot of those movies were good. A lot of them also stank out loud. You could make both those statements about any decade for the last 120 years. When, oh when will filmmakers finally move on and, just for a change of pace, make some cinematic love letters to the summer “The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen” and “From Justin to Kelly” came out?
Not today, that’s for sure. “The 4:30 Movie” is a nostalgic throwback to the sleepy summer of 1986, when teenagers watched wrestling religiously, made ironic predictions about the Mets never winning the World Series, and spent all day at the movies jumping from theater to theater. Kevin Smith will always hold a special place in my heart as one of the filmmakers who defined my formative years in cinema. "Clerks," "Mallrats," "Chasing Amy," "Dogma," and even the silly "Jay & Silent Bob Strike Back" were packed full of hilarious yet immature laughs and pop culture references that tickled my funny bone and my geek gland. But ever since he tried to make his own Judd Apatow movie with "Zack and Miri Make a Porno," which made him feel like he ruined Seth Rogen's career at the time, he's struggled to re-capture the comedic voice that once defined him.

Every mutant in the world of the “X-Men” has some sort of physics-defying superpower, from Jean Grey’s (Jennifer Hale) peerless telekinetic prowess to Scott Summers’ (Ray Chase) laser eyes to Wolverine’s (Cal Dodd) claws that go snikt. But the power at the heart of the appeal of Disney and Marvel’s animated series “X-Men ‘97” is the show’s ability to bridge time and make the current moment in animation feel like days of future past.
“X-Men ‘97” is, in the words of head director and supervising producer Jake Castorena, meant to be a direct spiritual successor to “X-Men: The Animated Series,” the iconic 1992 series produced by Saban Entertainment that ran until 1996. The new show, created by Beau DeMayo (who was subsequently fired from the project before it premiered), returns to many of the same characters, settings, and relationship dynamics, even to many of the same voice actors as the original.

Though he’s best known as an actor, the two-time Oscar winner Ben Affleck has excelled in a variety of fields, including writing, directing and producing. And it was the writing and producing catgories that brought him his two Academy Awards. Let’s take a look back at 18 of his greatest films, ranked worst to best.
Born in 1972, Affleck first gained notice as a hot young actor with supporting performances in movies such as “School Ties” (1992), “Dazed and Confused” (1993) and “Mallrats” (1995). He shot to stardom when he and Damon, lifelong friends, decided to write a couple of plum roles for themselves in the inspirational drama “Good Will Hunting” (1997). The box office smash bring the duo an Oscar and Golden Globe for screenwriting, launching both of their onscreen careers.

Pop culture and entertainment fans have lost a number of icons over the past few days. First was Shelley Duvall on July 11th, followed by Richard Simmons two days later. That day, it was also announced that Shannen Doherty – star of Beverly Hills 90210, Charmed and more – had passed away after a long battle with cancer at just 53. Now, Kevin Smith – who directed Doherty in 1995’s Mallrats – has broken his Silent Bob ways to honor the late actress.
It was no secret that Shannen Doherty held a grudge against Mallrats for the toll it took on her career but she and her director did end up having a good relationship. As such, Smith took to social media following the loss of his star, who was by far the most famous in the cast at that point. Shannen Doherty tragically passed away over the weekend, at the way-too-young age of 53. Doherty was obviously an absolute icon of the 1990s, mostly due to her work as Brenda Walsh on the long-running primetime teen soap Beverly Hills, 90210. Although the less said about the time the show forced her to protest the Vietnam War in 1960s cosplay, the better.
In addition to 90210, those of us who grew up in the ‘90s also knew Doherty as the co-star of Kevin Smith’s notorious flop Mallrats. But without her participation, the film may never have gotten made at all.
Following Doherty’s passing, Smith penned a lengthy Instagram post in tribute to the actress, who he noted was a “true talent” and “single handedly shattered it in the early ‘90s.” Smith also revealed that, prior to his Clerks success, he would routinely watch 90210 each week specifically for Doherty, aka “the girl from Heathers.

Jason Priestley, Jennie Garth, Tori Spelling, Brian Austin Green, Kevin Smith, Rose McGowan, Alyssa Milano, Sarah Michelle Gellar, Olivia Munn and more in Hollywood are mourning the loss of Shannen Doherty.
Doherty, known for her starring roles on Beverly Hills, 90210 and Charmed, died Saturday. She was first diagnosed with breast cancer in March 2015; after treatment and several surgeries, she announced in April 2017 that she was in remission. In February 2020, she tearfully revealed on Good Morning America, “I’m stage 4 — my cancer came back,” then said in June 2023 that cancer had spread to her brain.
“I am absolutely heartbroken over the passing of Shannen Doherty,” Munn wrote in an Instagram Story on Sunday morning. Earlier this year, Munn shared she was a breast cancer survivor, and had undergone a double mastectomy. This weekend, the actress wrote that she had grown close with Doherty, connecting over their shared experience.

Film and television fans mourned the death of Gen X icon Shannen Doherty this weekend. The 53-year-old star of “Beverly Hills, 90210” and “Mallrats” died following a lengthy and public battle with cancer. The news of her death—during a ludicrous weekend in America which also saw the deaths of Dr. Ruth Westheimer and Richard Simmons, as well as an assassination attempt on Donald Trump, former host of the eight-time Emmy-nominated reality show “The Apprentice”—sparked several reminiscences from those who knew her.
Jason Priestly, who played Doherty’s brother on “90210,” shared a promotional photo of the two of them from their younger years, and added, “she was a force of nature and I will miss her.”

Shannen Doherty refused to slow down.
Late last year, the actress launched a memoir-style podcast, Let’s Be Clear with Shannen Doherty, a vehicle which she used to inspire others. In an interview about it with People, she remained defiant.
“I’m not done with living. I’m not done with loving. I’m not done with creating. I’m not done with hopefully changing things for the better,” she said. “I’m just not — I’m not done.”
Yesterday, her journey came to an end, and her friends in Hollywood took to social media to remember the spirit she showed.

What exactly is BASEketball anyway? If you’re a child of a certain era, you know exactly what it is. If not, well, let me explain. In the late nineties, the hottest comic duo was no doubt Trey Parker and Matt Stone. Together, they had charted a unique path to stardom. Two University Of Colorado grads, the two had their beginnings in the early nineties when they made a micro-budget indie called Cannibal: The Musical, which, despite failing to get into the Sundance Film Festival, became kind of a calling card for them. It got them a unique job directing a corporate film about Universal Pictures for Seagrams, who were acquiring the company, thanks to the patronage of David Zucker, one of the directors behind The Naked Gun, Top Secret and Airplane, who was a fan of their movie. They parlayed their success into a low-budget comedy called Orgazmo, which...

Shaun and his best mate Ed are in trouble. They’ve discovered two zombies in their garden, and the lumbering flesh-eaters show no signs of stopping. However, Shaun and Ed have found one way of slowing the approach: throwing records.
And so, as the two zombies grow closer, Ed and Shaun rustle through the latter’s collection. “Sign o’ the Times … Purple Rain,” Ed suggests as projectiles, only to have Shaun tell him no. That is until Ed reaches a low point in Prince’s discography, the Batman soundtrack. “Throw it,” Shaun commands, striking a blow against the living dead.
The above scene is just one instance of the humor and horror that director Edgar Wright and his co-writer Simon Pegg bring to the RomZomCom Shaun of the Dead, released twenty years ago. Shaun (Pegg) and Ed (Nick Frost) spend a lot of time discussing their pop-cultural interests, even in the most dire situations.

Chicago – In 1997. Filmmaker Kevin Smith released his third film (after “Clerks” and “Mallrats”) entitled “Chasing Amy.” The story, featuring Joey Lauren Adams, is about a lesbian whose fluidly also includes a romantic relationship with a man. Watching this film was a young female born person who was questioning their own identity, and used the film as a touch point for these feelings. Years later, that person is director Sav Rodgers, and he made a documentary about his experiences with the film in coming to self and its complicated history in “Chasing Chasing Amy.”
“Chasing Chasing Amy” is currently on the film festival circuit, and came to Chicago in September of 2023 for the Reeling41 film festival, the Windy City’s International Lbgtq+ cinema celebration. There was a time when Kevin Smith was regarded as being one of the definitive filmmakers of Generation X. His feature directing debut on the shoestring-budgeted 1994 indie hit "Clerks" suggested Smith not only had a firm understanding of the slacker mentality that afflicted so many people in his age bracket, but he was also shrewd enough to be critical of it. The film centers on disgruntled Quick Stop Groceries clerk Dante Hicks (Brian O'Halloran) and those in his immediate vicinity, including his equally-cynical, unmotivated best friend Randal Graves (Jeff Anderson) and the off-beat drug dealers that loiter outside the store: loud-mouthed horny miscreant Jay (Jason Mewes) and his reserved yet secretly wise companion Silent Bob (Smith). As colorful as these characters were, they also felt like real people you could imagine Smith knew growing up on his home turf of New Jersey.

Going into 1995, Shannen Doherty and Kevin Smith could have taken on any project they wanted. Doherty had just bid farewell to her role as Brenda Walsh on Beverly Hills 90210 in 1994, which, despite some behind-the-scenes squabbles, made her a household name. Smith, meanwhile, had given audiences one of the funniest and most important indies ever with Clerks. And so the two headed to the mall, giving us Mallrats, a box office disaster that stands as one of the most disappointing sophomore efforts and did its part to kill Doherty’s career — and she’s not afraid to tell her director so.
Shannen Doherty recently had Kevin Smith on her Let’s Be Clear podcast, where the topic of Mallrats was inevitably brought up. As she told Smith, “That’s kind of the interesting thing about Mallrats, right, is that it wasn’t a box office success…It died…So did my film career.

Kevin Smith has apologized to Shannen Doherty after she revealed to him his 1995 cult movie “Mallrats” killed her film career.
Doherty was reminiscing about the movie with Smith, a guest on her “Let’s Be Clear” podcast, when she pointed out that despite becoming a fan favorite, it had fared poorly at the box office when it was originally released.
“That’s kind of the interesting thing about ‘Mallrats,’ right, is that it wasn’t a box office success,” she told Smith, who replied “Oh, it died.”
“It died,” Doherty agreed. “So did my film career. That was it.”
Doherty was the most famous member of “Mallrats” when the movie came out, having already starred in “Heathers” and “Beverly Hills, 90210.” Smith even admitted during the podcast that it was largely because of Doherty’s involvement the film got greenlit.

Armageddon was a big departure for Ben Affleck. Prior to signing on for the Jerry Bruckheimer-produced, Michael Bay-directed sci-fi thriller with a nine-figure budget, Affleck had been best known for his roles in indie and art house films, such as Kevin Smith’s Mallrats and Chasing Amy, Shakespeare in Love, and Dazed and Confused. And he’d been cast in the movie before Good Will Hunting became a surprise box-office hit (and earned Affleck an Oscar for the screenplay). But, when it came to making Affleck a Hollywood A-lister, Armageddon didn’t disappoint. Released 25 years ago it became an international blockbuster, grossing more than half a billion dollars worldwide. When Affleck started filming Armageddon, though, he was still a newbie when it came to big-budget action movies and, in a conversation with Armageddon star Bruce Willis, admitted that it was a lot more difficult and frustrating than he thought it would be.

We all have our problematic faves. Especially if you’ve been watching movies for longer than, say, yesterday. The #MeToo reckoning didn’t just reveal the monsters in Hollywood’s closet, it also made it impossible to ignore the pervasive sexism, misogyny, and power imbalances permeating every aspect of the industry. So pervasive, in fact, that very few projects weren’t touched by the stench. In the case of Kevin Smith, his career is directly tied to Harvey Weinstein’s Miramax, which produced and distributed four of his early films, including one of his biggest hits, “Chasing Amy.”
Released in 1997, “Chasing Amy” followed on the heels of Smith’s debut hit “Clerks” and the sophomoric flop “Mallrats.” The film stars Joey Lauren Adams as an effortlessly cool lesbian and Ben Affleck as the persistent straight man who falls in love with (and eventually seduces) her. Shannen Doherty, one of the biggest pop culture teen icons of the early nineties after starring in Beverly Hills 90210 and Charmed, is in the fight of her life against stage 4 cancer which, the actress revealed via Instagram, has spread to her brain. Doherty had previously revealed, back in 2020, that her breast cancer had returned after first battling it in 2015 before it went into remission in 2017. As she explains in her Instagram story,
January 12, 2023. On January 5th, my ct scan showed Mets in my brain. Yesterday’s video showed the process of getting fitted for the mask which you wear during radiation to your brain. January 12, the first round of radiation took place. My fear is obvious. I am extremely claustrophobic, and there was a lot going on in my life. I am fortunate as I have great doctors like Dr Amin Mirahdi and the amazing techs at cedar sinai.

“Do you understand why I love this movie so much?” asks Sav Rodgers, the director whose adoration of Kevin Smith’s 1997 rom-com Chasing Amy has led them on a pilgrimage to parts of New Jersey so ungentrified that, 25 years later, they’re — seriously — almost all still there. “No,” says Shana Lory. Which is a bit of a shock, given that she was the casting director.

When a filmmaker takes on a story based on the crimes committed by a real serial killer, they have to walk a fine line. If they cross that line, it can feel disrespectful to the victims… and can even seem like they’re glorifying the killer. That’s not something Devanny Pinn intends to do with her feature directorial debut a 1970s serial killer tale called Black Mass. Speaking with Rue Morgue, she revealed that Black Mass focuses on the victims rather than the killer.
Inspired by real events, Black Mass is set over a 24-hour period in Florida during the winter of 1978 when college girls were being stalked by a serial killer. Eric Pereira and Brandon Slagle wrote the screenplay. Cast members include Lew Temple (The Devil’s Rejects), Jeremy London (Mallrats), Lisa Wilcox (A Nightmare on Elm Street 4: The Dream Master), Michelle Romano (Escape From Ensenada), Kathleen Kinmont...

‘Chasing Amy’ Doc Examines the Legacy of Kevin Smith’s Polarizing 1997 Film in First Trailer (Video)
Sometimes the cultural reevaluation of a film can go both ways: For as much as viewers can say “Yes, this movie is actually good,” they can also say “We see now it’s incredibly problematic.” Such is the case with director Kevin Smith’s 1997 feature “Chasing Amy,” which tells the story of a straight man (played by Ben Affleck) falling in love with a lesbian (played by Joey Lauren Adams).
As director Sav Rodgers’ documentary, “Chasing Chasing Amy” explores in its first trailer: Can one enjoy a film that falls into stereotypes as often as it breaks them?
“Chasing Chasing Amy” isn’t just a look at the Smith film but how it influenced Rodgers own journey of self-discovery. By looking at the film’s polarizing depiction of sexuality and gender, both in the wake of its initial release and today, Rodgers looks at how his own life has been altered.
