this is indeed not a bollywood movie!
ethanoel2 November 2014
Warning: Spoilers
it is more of a simple story of an old man and the river. and there is no groovy pop music or dancing scenes with beautiful people shaking their lean hips so it is very refreshing Indian film. i admit that it is not a great piece of world cinema but it is still worth watching if you have patience and you are used to watch films outside the Hollywood action or block busting or any other standard formula.

the old man earns his meager income rowing villagers across the river in his boat like his ancestors have done a century before him and at the same time he has to take care of his orphan grandson whose father (the old man's younger son) and mother have died in the flood a few years earlier. their life is indeed very simple, almost boring to the demanding western eye but they are totally at ease with it. the man has another older son living in the city (besides the deceased younger one) but this older son has completely forgotten his father until the son needs his father to visit the city to close a productive land deal for him. the old man and his grandson travel to the city to see their only relatives there. the elder son is a spineless creature under the power of his wife, the old mans daughter-in-law: a greedy manipulative unpleasant bitch who hates his father-in-law but tolerates him only to get that important signature in the land selling deal to earn them a lot of money. the children of the family have not even known they had a grandfather living in the country!

the director jahnu barua presents a really nasty picture of an urban westernized opportunist materialist money loving Indian middle class who has totally forgotten or is desperately trying to forget and erase its peasant roots and rural background. i think the picture thus represented in this movie may even be quite a correct one.

the old man returns home bitter and disappointed at his greedy indifferent son and the alienated family only to see that his and the little boys traditional way of living is now threatened by the construction of a bridge across the river. their life will never be the same anymore.

Assamese Masterpiece Movie : You should watch and then realize.

Jahnu Barua is a great director. He won many national awards in his career. Hkhagoroloi Bohu Door is one of his best effort. The story revolves around a boatman who earns his living by sailing boat in the nearby ghats.Problem arises when the government decides to construct a bridge on it which will deprive his earnings. His son who lives in city wants his father only to take care of their property.

Movie truly brings back to our roots. Really painful to think of how bad the situation is in Assam, but more so because how heartless some people can be. And all of this - poverty, selfishness, greed is all one vicious cycle from which there seems to be no escape.

Acting and direction is perfect. Bishnu Kharghoria is one of the greatest actor in Assam. His acting as a boat-man (Naoria in Assamese) is heart touching. The boy, Sushanta Barooah also doing his best. People who love watching top rated movies should prefer to watch it.

A masterpiece by Jahnu Baruah.
WorldMovie9923 March 2023
Watch it if you want to experience great Assamese films. A genuine depiction of people lives about rural and urban areas, about selfish interest, about inhumanity, about responsibilities, about trust, about optimism and so on. This film gives a lot of it. A true masterpiece.

Jahnu baruah is a great storyteller. His slow paced serene realistic narrations will make you seated to his story. There is no unnecessary scenes in it. Every thing has little to high significance. Bishnu Khargoria is so genuine as the aged simple satisfied boatman who toils hard to bring up his only grandson, his last responsiblity. Arun Nath too is good as his son who undergoes transformation towards being selfish influenced by his wife. The BGM is truly apppealing as the rural assamese , the sound mixing too. The script is good too with all edges properly linked up. There may be a bit of dramatization in a few roles but that's little in front of the film's heavy theme. The set up is natural and no special effects are used. There are so many things to be mentioned but I am making it short now on.

The film ends with an optimistic note. Under the influence of his son's selfishness he too tries to turn bad. But he is changed by his grandson who is a good school going kid. This depiction really impressed me and I would vote a 10 for this, along being impressed with all the realistic characters throughout the film. Its a film about grandfather grandson relationship, and their lives with in relation to one another. It sets a great message of love, trust, responsibilities and optimism. The grandfather chooses finally to do good to upbring his grandson, despite having the chance to do evil. This makes him the hero, the protagony, the true example set for the next generation. Just watch it. A 99/100.
