The Bath Tub Scene
We spent the first half of September with discussions of Tim Burton’s Beetlejuice (listen) and Colm McCarthy’s The Girl With All the Gifts (listen) before celebrating our 300th episode (and the start of a six-week theme on Divas/Anniversaries) with a revisit of Karyn Kusama’s Jennifer’s Body (listen). Next up: Nicole Kidman in Jonathan Glazer‘s unfairly controversial 2004 sophomore feature, Birth.
Kidman stars as Anna, a widow who is still grieving her husband’s sudden death ten years later. Despite being newly engaged to Joseph (Danny Huston), Anna upends her entire life when 10-year-old Sean (Cameron Bright) appears in her apartment, claiming to be her dead husband.
As her concerned family, including matriarch Eleanor (Lauren Bacall) and brother-in-law Bob (Arliss Howard) question the boy, new details about Anna’s marriage emerge courtesy of dead Sean’s brother Clifford (Peter Stormare) and his wife,...

The 2024 Netflix documentary series from Mexico, Caught in the Web: The Murder Behind Zona Divas, takes audiences for a deep dive into the dark and criminal side of the internet, where seemingly harmless websites are linked to violent secrets. The four-part series follows one such website, named Zona Divas, which was touted as just a website that helped sex workers find clients online, and its shady downfall after five women linked to it were found murdered all over Mexico City. Caught in the Web is often a chilling and devastating watch, as it reflects on the vulnerability and the lack of safety for many women in the South American continent, which sets them up for a life full of exploitation and unfair judgment.
What was the Zona Divas website?
First opened around 2010, the Zona Divas website was basically a dark and immoral marketplace for escorts, where anyone could browse through...

Even before convicted s*x offender and disgraced Hollywood mogul Harvey Weinstein’s criminal, predatory behavior sparked the global phenomenon of the #MeToo movement in 2017 that questioned and examined the ubiquity of harassment and assault that women from all walks of life, unfortunately, undergo, the Miramax co-founder earned a reputation of notoriety for being ‘exasperating’ and just overall difficult.

Many who worked alongside him (including those who later admitted to not being privy to the deplorable acts of the producer) mentioned his crass, ill-mannered disposition and unforgiving temper. There were also those subject to one-off occurrences, which revealed to them the despotic, sinister ways of Weinstein prior to the shared collective that rose against him.
Among those who saw this side of him was Egot winner Barbra Streisand.
While she admitted to not knowing of Harvey Weinstein’s despicable conduct, she...

The divas have returned, glory, glory, hallelujah!
If you missed the first season of R&B Divas, it’s a reality show conceived by Faith Evans about a group of, well, R&B divas, getting together to record an album, support each other, and be generally good people (sometimes). Even if you’re not a reality show fan, I can promise you that this one shows more genuine heart than most I’ve seen. While the first season, which aired last year, revolved around the record, this season is set up around the premise of: To Tour or Not To Tour, That is the Question.
The technical title is also now “R&B Divas Atlanta,” since there will also be a new “R&B Divas Los Angeles” airing this summer. But with no offense taken to the City of Angels, honey child, if you’re not in Atlanta,...

Watch VH1 Divas Sunday, Dec. 5 at 9/8c! VH1 TV Shows | Music Videos | Celebrity Photos | News & Gossip We were able to snag some raw footage from VH1 Divas Salute the Troops while watching rehearsals last night at a military base in San Diego, and we’re happy to be able to give you this spoiler: The show will open with a hot rendition of the WWII-era megahit “Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy.” The number features Katy Perry, Keri Hilson, Nicki Minaj (although she’s not in this clip), and Jennifer Nettles of Sugarland. This isn’t the first time that the iconic song has been revamped — En Vogue did a short R&B version in 1990 and Christina Aguilera’s “Candyman” is a tribute to the Andrew Sisters, who first released the song in 1941. But after watching the VH1 Divas performers rehearsing, we’re convinced it’ll be the most mind-warping take on it yet!

This past Sunday’s Essence Festival not only included a number of Michael Jackson tributes and a reunited Commodores, it also marked the return of one of R&B’s definitive groups. The four original members of En Vogue are back together. The group performed a set of hits at the New Orleans festival and plan to record a new album in the coming year. There was also talk of a group-related reality show, though everything is still in the planning stages.
En Vogue set the template for girl groups in modern R&B, peaking with 1992’s Funky Divas album, which yielded the hits “My Lovin’ (You’re Never Gonna Get It)” and “Free Your Mind.” Their combination of sweet, powerful vocals with hip-hop swagger (check their Salt-n-Pepa collaboration “Whatta Man”) paved the way for groups like Tlc, Destiny’s Child and Pussycat Dolls. The group’s shifting lineup has always hinged on Dawn Robinson,...
