Action-packed, but nothing really special
gridoon20243 March 2013
Warning: Spoilers
Yukari Oshima and Sharon Yeung, as Hong Kong cops on leave in Manila who are contacted by their boss and asked to help a local, recently widowed cop break a weapons smuggling ring operating in the area, make a dynamite female-buddy team. Sarah Gomez, as the main bad guy's sister, is a totally sexy and evil bitch. So you'd expect some some of climactic confrontation between her and at least one, if not both, of the film's leads. But it never comes, as Gomez meets a disappointing end. "Deadly Target" is jam-packed with action, but there is also too much wirework, and the film runs too long for its simple good guys vs. bad guys tale. But there ARE two things here that you won't often see: Yukari and Sharon in clown disguises, and death by fart (!) ** out of 4.

Misses the Bullseye

Trying to ride the Hong Kong action film bandwagon, this fun little picture holds its own in the action department, but fails in the editing and writing. Traveling to the Philippines on vacation, Interpol agents Anna (Pan Pan Yeung) and Cynthia (Yukari Oshima) visit Cynthia's cousin Ken, who happens to be a major arms dealer. Renegade cop Eddie (Edu Manzano) meets up with the pair, and they try to find Wong (Phillip Ko), a man trying to make a gun deal. His gun sellers keep getting killed, until he makes a deal with Ken. Eddie gets all of his information from a mysterious informant, a man dressed (badly) as a woman. The final showdown pits Anna, Cynthia, and Eddie against Ken, Wong, and their various henchmen.

Plot and story are not really the main thrust of this film, the action is. I am unfamiliar with the actors, and the film does not mention who played who, but the stunts by Phillip Ko are incredible. The film makers stage a fight or gun battle at the drop of a hat. One scene has Anna and Cynthia teaming to battle on the beach against a dozen guys WHO WANT THEIR VOLLEYBALL BACK. That is the only reason for the carnage. Most of the time, the camera lovingly strays on the cute duo as they stretch by putting their feet well above their heads. Eddie, the stereotypical renegade cop, gets in a giant explosive fight just so he can make it to his daughter's birthday party on time. The action is fantastic, but the choppy editing really hurts. There is a subplot where Eddie's mother-in-law blames him for his wife's death, but that situation is never elaborated on. Some scenes end with a character talking in mid-sentence. The dubbing is atrocious, from giving most of the cast Americanized names, to lots of "hey"s and throat clearing dialogue just to have noise when the cast are moving their lips. The attempts at comedy are pretty disastrous, with one scene involving the transvestite, and some men who are attracted to him, that is down right unbearable. This is nothing earth shattering in the Asian film genre, but this was worth the rental price alone for some very well done action back in the day.

A couple of cool girls who can fight, but otherwise nothing special
sarastro717 February 2007
Warning: Spoilers
Deadly Target, unfortunately, mixes two genres: kung fu movies and gun-play movies. As a result, it isn't a satisfying example of either. The only thing that makes it worth watching are the two super-athletic women in the lead roles. They have some serious fighting and acrobatic ability, and also great chemistry and charisma.

But the car chases and gunfights are laughably poorly done, the overall acting is hammy and the dialog is abysmal - although that may have something to do with the ridiculous subtitles, which just say "Cut the crap!" all the time, and uses dialog on the level of "Don't mess up without my order, alright?". But honestly, this is just the kind of thing that these characters actually seem to be saying...

The movie dragged on with a boring plot for too long. The climactic fight lasts fifteen minutes, but has very little kung fu and almost nothing but gun-play (complete with a bunch of guys who are killed several times), which in my opinion was boring, as I watched it to see some good fighting. Too bad.

Girls with the Gun!!
rohanm54624 August 2018
Ratings it self says. It looks like a cheap rip off of Cannon Group 90s movies. A Hong Kong action movie with average ratings. Having a weak story line, un necessary actions, only the locations were good worth watching since it was shot in Philippines. A legendary Action movie maker like Godfrey Ho would have done better than this. If u want to see girls with guns or Female action movie u can go for Moon lee's or Cynthia Rothrock or Michelle Yeoh's movies. Try avoiding this. Do not expect much from this movie even though it is Godfrey Ho movie, it seems like Ho's magic got reduced for this movie. This movie has not much to offer u, rather than dis appointments.
