Sex & Nudity

  • One sex scene at the beginning fully clothed while standing.
  • Sex scene with thrusting in the middle and one shorter at the end.
  • The main character is castrated in his childhood.
  • There are several scenes of two brothers engaging in sexual intercourse, in immediate succession, with women;
  • There are three or four scenes in which a woman's breasts or a man's buttocks are seen; in one scene pubic hair is shown too.
  • There is a single scene in which a naked adolescent boy, covering his genitals with his hand, is filmed.

Violence & Gore

  • There are scenes in which each of two brothers cuts his hands, once by crushing a wine glass, and once by deliberately opening the veins of the wrist; blood is shown, but the actual cutting is not emphasized or filmed too explicitly.
  • There is one scene in which the violence is only implied: we see a boy recovering from a castration operation by soaking in a milky bath, and are shown how drops of blood are coloring the milky water.

Profanity

  • There is a small amount of language which might be considered profane in English translation (French "merde" does not carry quite the same vulgarity as its English translation), but in general, the language of the film is not excessive.

Alcohol, Drugs & Smoking

  • Some drinking. A character is shown drunk.
  • The title character uses a moderate amount of opium, but it is suggested that this is mostly for medical reasons.
