"Rapture" ruptures
=G=18 August 2002
"Rapture" tells of a software "composer" (Ontkean) who, for reasons unknown, becomes consumed with obsession over an old school friend (Allen) in middle age. Supposed to be a taught thriller/psychodrama, "Rapture" herniates early on and fizzles with two dimensional characters, a flat screenplay, no atmospherics, and a simple-minded script. Not worth the time. Pass on "Rapture" 1993. (D)

Rapture - ** out of *****

Warning: Spoilers
This is a cheap, badly acted TV movie that is obviously trying to jump on the FATAL ATTRACTION bandwagon. In fact, this one goes a step further - the guy obsessed with the girl also has another girl obsessed with him. Ontkean, desperately in need of a haircut, is the most milquetoast villain imaginable. If blandness were lethal, he'd be a serial killer. But Ontkean is Olivier when compared to the horrific acting of an actress named Natalie Radford, who plays the woman obsessed with him. She provides a couple unintentional laughs that are the highlights of the movie. This is yet another example of supposedly smart characters making the stupidest decisions imaginable. If you're smart enough to be attending Harvard, you're smart enough to know you shouldn't go on a picnic in the middle of nowhere on the edge of a cliff with someone you suspect of murder. Just sayin'. There is less than zero chemistry between Ontkean and Allen, which makes the whole theme of obsession seem obsolete. I will give the film credit for an ending that was a little different than the norm and more credible than I was expecting considering what came before. It's not bad enough to be campy fun and certainly not good enough to be taken at all seriously. - Jeff Marshall,.

Predictable silly tale of obsession.
VENEZIADOGE5 February 2002
Rapture is a tale of early 1990s obsession in a low-budget style. The main character does not do a very good job of playing a psychotically obsessed madman. There was a flurry of these types of TV movies in the late 80s-early 90s. It could best be described as a blend of Hider in the House, The Stepfather, Fear, and Unlawful Entry. I am not sure if they could have made it any more predictable than it is.
