Another nasty Cat III shocker from Hong Kong.
HumanoidOfFlesh14 February 2004
"Daughter of Darkness" is a tale of a young woman's sexual abuse by her father. The film is very dark as it offers plenty of sex, nudity, gore and heavy violence.Lily Chung-who played Ming-Ming in Billy Tang's "Red to Kill"(1994)-is extremely convincing as titular heroine Fong. The film is pretty uneven, because it's filled with lame comedy and silly jokes.Still the scenes of rape and sexual abuse are very shocking and unpleasant. The final slaughter scene is extremely violent and bloody.Anthony Wong from "Ebola Syndrome"(1996)is also memorable as police captain Lui.The scene where he molests the female corpse totally cracked me up.Overall,"Daughter of Darkness" is a pretty good shocker,so if you like extreme stuff give it a look.7 out of 10.

Shocking Cat III, chock full of nastiness.
BA_Harrison30 October 2006
One year prior to her excellent turn as Ming Ming in 'Bloody' Billy Tang's top Cat II shocker Red To Kill, Lily Chung played another hapless victim of violence and sexual abuse in Daughter of Darkness (also directed by Tang).

Chung plays Wei, a beautiful young woman who is tortured (mentally and physically) by her own family, until, one night, she finally snaps and sees to it that they will never harm her again.

After a gruesome opening scene, in which Wei reports the slaughter of her family to the cops, and the bloodbath is examined by a sleazy cop (ably played by Anthony Wong), the movie gives way to a series of lame comedic moments, which serve to belie the shocking nature of the movie as a whole.

However, once Wong's cop begins to unravel the truth about the grisly murders, the tone of the film shifts into much darker territory. Wei tells of her abuse and, in flashbacks, we see how, after being downtrodden by her mother and siblings, and repeatedly raped by her father, she savagely dispatches of her uncaring family.

Packed to the rafters with scenes of nudity (Chung isn't shy about stripping off), perversion, voyeurism, violence, and general sleaziness, Daughter of Darkness is a very good example of Cat III excess.

I see Daughter of Darkness as something of a practice run for Chung and Tang, whose next film together, Red to Kill, is the perfect Cat III experience. Daughter of Darkness isn't perfect, but fans of the genre will find much to enjoy in this ultimately dark and depressing slice of extreme cinema.

*** The Universe release, which I viewed, is the most complete official version of the film available on DVD, however it is shorn of some moments of violence which were in the original theatrical release. ***

More Decent Cat III Trash...
EVOL66612 October 2005
DAUGHTER OF DARKNESS is a pretty sleazy Cat III "shocker" with themes of violence, rape, murder, incest, voyeurism, among other assorted nastiness, but before ya get too excited, this one is pretty mediocre. Lily Chung (who was Ming-Ming in the far superior RED TO KILL) plays another tortured soul (the type of role she seems to do so well...) who is the "black sheep" of her family. There doesn't appear to be any real rhyme or reason, but her mother, father, sister, and brother all hate her and treat her like complete garbage. Eventually she gets tired of the constant abuse (and the abuse takes many disturbing shapes) and flips the f'ck out. The rest is pretty typical Cat III history.

DAUGHTER OF DARKNESS isn't bad, but it isn't nearly as much of a stand-out HK "shocker" as THE UNTOLD STORY, RED TO KILL, or THE EBOLA SYNDROME, for example. Anthony Wong has another great performance - and even though he is a cop in this one, he is still a twisted, perverse, filthy f!cking scum-bag (and that's why we love ya Tony!!!). One of the big problems is that DAUGHTER OF DARKNESS starts as almost a straight-up comedy, then switches mid-film into a typical Cat III sleaze-fest when Chung begins to tell her story of abuse to the cops. I don't much mind the comedic aspects that tend to go along with even the most shocking of these types of films, but DAUGHTER OF DARKNESS switched from comedy to serious drama in a blink, and made for a disjointed feel. Regardless, still a decent entry and worth a look for all you pervert douche-bags out there (like me...) ; ) 7/10

Bizarre
berthier6 July 2001
A young woman is maltreated by her family an raped by her father. All her family is killed. The daughter is suspected by a mad inspector (a sort of trash Nicky Larson) who is more interested by sex (very "scatological") than the investigation. What a strange movie! In fact, it's a mix between stupid comedy and very violent trash scenes (murder, incest, rape). I think this movie is really disconcerting for the occidental public. There is no morality, they deal with glaucous subjects with absurd humor. So, if you like the trash Asian way of making movies, try this one.

Really fun.

Poor Ming Ming tastes the boot again
Dr. Gore6 July 2003
Warning: Spoilers
*SPOILER ALERT* *SPOILER ALERT*

This is the third movie I've seen with Ming Ming, (Lily Chung), from "Red to Kill". My God she never disappoints. Once again she plays the shy, sweet, innocent girl who gets the boot slammed upside her head. What is it about this girl that drives men mad with lust and violence? I don't know but I like it. The DVD cover has a picture of her standing naked with her hands tied together. There are blood spots covering her private areas. This is not blood on her body mind you, but blood spots the filmmakers decided to use for the DVD cover. That way they're blocking your view of the sweet spots yet drawing you in like a bull to a flapping red cape. Charge!

There are two parts to this flick. The first part is a goofy comedy. I use the word "comedy" loosely. The movie thought it was being funny but I wasn't laughing. Or smiling. In fact, I was worried this movie was going to break my heart. The cops stumble upon a murdered family. The head goofball cop does a lot of supposed funny things. He poses with the corpses, peeps on Ming Ming and basically just acts stupid. I was concerned.

The second part of the movie is sleaze-o-rama. It flashbacks on why this family was murdered. The title of this flick is "Daughter of Darkness" but I think a more appropriate title would have been "Father of Darkness" or maybe "Family of Darkness". The sleaze pours out. Ming Ming gets smacked around and sexually abused by her family. She also has plenty of sex with her boyfriend. Why the movie needed to flashback on boyfriend sex is unknown but appreciated. The family murder scene is a four star buffet of carnage. This DVD is worth getting for the slaughter party at the end.

Give me a break
Der_Schnibbler23 May 2013
I suppose this melodramatic piece of clownish claptrap is the Chinese' idea of dark and deviant. As if a year and a half there wasn't enough to let me know how lame their films and TV shows are.

It gets pretty nasty for a few minutes toward the end. The "row, row, row your boat" part nearly had me fapping. But even then the general air of "aw shucks" stupidity will make it difficult for most people to even get that far. The typically Chinglish subtitles only lessen the impact.

Unless you are not a fan of these kind of films, I wouldn't recommend this. Communists simply do not have enough worldliness or emotional depth to create anything truly profound, since they are indoctrinated to be lamers from birth.

The ending is nearly twenty unrelenting minutes of a moronically cruel downward spiral that is supposed to have you in tears, but in reality just makes you wanna roll your eyes till your brain starts to hurt. It just goes on and on and on. It's as if some idiot thought (and I'm sure he did), "Let's make a hundred item list of every single possible thing that would make people sad, then show them all scene by scene toward the end!!"

Category III cinema: Daughter of Darkness
Captain_Couth22 August 2005
Daughter of Darkness (1993) was one of the more brutal titles from Hong Kong to be released under the Category III rating. Originally, films received a Category III rating if they showed excessive nudity, strong sexual themes (even if they didn't show any sex or nudity), gay themes or violence. No one under the age of eighteen was allowed to view Category III films. But due to it's huge popularity, the rating became a whole new genre.

The movie is a police procedural film told in a non-linear structure. A young woman (Lily Cheung)is found in her home, a survivor of a family massacre. Someone has butchered the mother, father (William Ho), brother and sister of the lone surviving victim. A suspect is caught and brutally interrogated by the police. But a slovenly officer (Anthony Wong) is on the case and not everything is what it seems to be.

A vile and disturbing ride for all involved. Many of these police procedural films were based upon actual crimes. If you enjoy Category III films then this one has your name written all over it!

Highly recommended.

CAT III Classic....with Anthony Wong !
Viva_Chiba16 September 2010
This is another Category III (CAT III) movie, starring Anthony Wong, so this is gonna be great !

The movie starts with Anthony Wong (cheers from the audience !) investigating a murder of an entire family, the only member of the family who is still alive is the young Wei Fong (played by Lily Chung, a CAT III hottie), after some evidences, Wei Fong decides to confess a sad story of abuse and violence....from her family.

Daughter of Darkness starts as a comedy, with the officer Lui (Anthony Wong) investigating the murder, making you to "forget" about the mean spirited and sad atmosphere that you was expecting. But after that Wei Fong decides to confess, the movie continues with THAT mean spirited and sad atmosphere that you was expecting ! Besides "The Untold Story", this is one of the ESSENTIAL CAT III movies, that every CAT III fan should check. The music is great for set up the "mood" of the scenes (especially of the "sad" ones). The performance of Anthony Wong was awesome, just like the one of Lily Chung. There are enough sex scenes to entertain the male audience.

Outrageous filth, I love it!
dworldeater20 August 2018
Warning: Spoilers
Daughter Of Darkness is a very well done Catagory 3 shocker that is one punch in the gut and wild trip of depravity Hong Kong style. Lily Chung plays a gorgeous young woman that is abused and mistreated by her family until she reaches the breaking point and slaughters them all. This is a totally brutal and sick, twisted piece of cinema that is bleak, ultraviolent and absolutely morally repugnant with rape, incest, misogyny that explodes with a bloodsoaked act of rage that was building to the insane climax. Ka Kui Ho is the letcherous and morally repugnant father who is a sex crazed maniac, who will bang anything and brutally rapes and abuses his daughter. Anthony Wong gives a great early performance as a baffoonish police officer bringing totally black Chinese humor. This deeply disturbing film is great for what it is and one of my favorite of the less obvious Catagory 3 classics. If you are looking for extreme, brutal and totally offensive horror, this Hong Kong thriller/exploitation picture will surely not dissapoint fans of truly sick flicks.

Comedy. Crime Drama. Horror. Sexploitation. All in one
Musicianmagic30 December 2023
This is a combination comedy, crime drama, horror & sexploitation film. It doesn't do any one of these great but well enough that together it's an above average movie.

The IMDB plot description is (as frequently the case) not accurate. We don't know who did the killing until near the end. It's more accurate to say, the movie is both the investigation of the killings as well as what provoked the killings.

The police are more the comedy, played in a slapstick style. Yes they actually investigate tho almost everything they do is played for laughs. Unfortunately, it doesn't work much of the time but there are a few laughs. They are part of the crime drama tho that's mostly played out in the story of what lead to the killings. That part is also the sexploitation with several sex scenes. Nothing real graphic but there is nudity and simulated sex. The killings themselves are the horror part as it's fairly graphic violence with several quarts of blood. The script did a fantastic job of weaving everything together. This movie fits every category of a Cat III movie.

While most of the cast are just alright. The female lead Lily Chung is excellent. Part of the reason this movie works. Yes she is beautiful but more importantly she can act. Ka-Kui Ho, who plays her father is outstanding. His facial expressions really fit the part.

This movie may not be for everyone. Some may not like the violence. Some the nudity. Some may not find anything funny. It's the movie in its entirety that make it a very good movie. Worth watching!
