Another Black Rose comedic sequel/spoof.
OllieSuave-00714 April 2015
This is another sequel or spoof to the 1965 action drama, The Black Rose. Tony Leung reprises his role as Detective Keith Lui, who partners with Bo Sing Leung (Kenny Bee) to go undercover at an apartment complex watch over high school teacher Pearl Chan (Carina Lau). She is is suspected to be connected to a rare diamond theft involving a notorious thief Mr. Mickey (Simon Yam). Meanwhile, the legendary Black Rose appears and is also in pursuance of Mr. Mickey, wanting him to surrender himself and the diamond in order to clear her name.

This movie is not as plot-driven or has much substance as the previous sequel, Black Rose vs. Black Rose. Is mostly a comedy mash with slapstick humor, goofy acting and nonsensical stuff. Tony Leung did fine in his role and Veronica Yip plays a somewhat enduring female lead opposite Leung. However, Kenny Bee acted too artificial and superfluous and Carina Lau was a little annoying.

The appearances of the Black Rose (an actual character in the legendary cat burglar costume as opposed to only featuring her apprentices in the previous movie and her nemesis the White Rose were an interesting touch to the story and is the most intriguing aspect of the movie. The action scenes were OK - could have used more, though.

Overall, it's not a great movie, but it has its interesting moments. It's not entirely boring - just childish at times.

A big step up

Warning: Spoilers
This sequel to 92 LEGENDARY LA ROSE NOIRE is a much better film than the first; the comedy is funnier and the plot, although still slightly confusing, hangs together a lot better. Tony Leung is the sole actor to reprise his role from the first film and he's the lead this time around, playing the usual masquerade for much of the running time. Accompanying him are Kenny Bee, always a warm and funny presence in film, alongside Carina Lau and the gorgeous Veronica Yip. Simon Yam turns up for bad guy duties while the humorous situations continue to develop throughout; a good example of situation comedy in essentially a single location. There's not a huge amount of action, but the two White Rose vs. Black Rose bouts are a delight and the ending's a good one.
