Almost anyone over 30 has owned a Nokia phone at some point in their lives, but not many people know that the iconic brand was created at a Finnish company formerly specializing in rubber boots.
Once the world’s biggest mobile manufacturer at the turn of the 21st century, the company was nearly wiped out of the smartphone market by Apple’s iPhone and Google’s Android well before 2010, and ultimately sold its handset division to Microsoft in 2013.
When news broke of Microsoft’s takeover on TV, Finnish director Maarit Lalli’s first thought was, “There’s going to be only one [drama] on Nokia in Finland: It will either be me or someone else, and it’s most likely going to be made by a man,” she told Variety during a set visit in Helsinki.

Television networks and production companies continue to sever ties with Louis C.K. following the comedian's admission of sexual misconduct, with The Secret Life of Pets 2 and TBS the latest to disassociate themselves from C.K.
In the 36 hours following the New York Times' report documenting five women's allegations against C.K., nearly every entertainment company in business with C.K. – from HBO and Netflix, who won't air the comedian's second exclusive stand-up special, to FX and The Orchard, the distribution company that canceled the upcoming release of I Love You,...

The return to Twin Peaks did not begin with this summer’s third, possibly final season of David Lynch and Mark Frost’s medium-shaking television project — despite what almost everything, from general public perception to the kind-of-sort-of-but-not-really subtitle, would have you believe — but through last year’s The Secret History of Twin Peaks, a visually dense, textually opaque epistolary novel penned by Frost. Though initially perplexing in scope (it begins with Lewis and Clark, folds the likes of Richard Nixon and L. Rob Hubbard into the Peaks mythos, and only hits the original series’ events at book’s end), it proved a more-or-less-perfect tee-up: plenty was said, seemingly nothing revealed — perhaps the most notable exception being the existence of Agent Tamara Preston, played in the new series by Chrysta Bell — and its tethers to events we’d eventually follow (or at least observe) week after week proved, in hindsight, rather deep.

Credit where it’s due: Few films have done more to unite the international film community than “Zama.” The minutes-long opening titles list over 20 different production companies and regional supports. The nominally Argentinian film is a joint venture between nine other countries as well, and the end credits name figures as diverse as Danny Glover, Pedro Almodóvar, and Gael Garcia Bernal among the many other who jumped on to help this project through a troubled, many year production. Finally complete, Lucrecia Martel’s film promises to be significantly more divisive.
Technically an adaptation of Antonio Di Benedetto acclaimed modernist novel, “Zama” reads just as much like an open declaration of war against the line that separates form and content. The source text told the story of an 18th century magistrate driven to madness while waiting for his next post; the film forces the viewer to go mad right there with him.

The scene that changed cinema forever is getting the ultimate honor: A film devoted entirely to its brilliance. “78/52,” a documentary about Janet Leigh’s infamous shower scene in Alfred Hitchcock’s “Psycho,” takes its opaque title from the number of shots and cuts in the three minute sequence (78 camera set-ups, 52 edits). Directed by Alexandre O. Philippe, the film features interviews with the crème de la crème of cinephiles: Jamie Lee Curtis, Guillermo del Toro, Elijah Wood, Danny Elfman, Bret Easton Ellis, Peter Bogdanovich, Karyn Kusama, and more lend their insights into the scene’s lasting legacy.
“78/52” was regarded warmly by critics following its Sundance premiere, and recently released a trailer in anticipation of its theatrical run. The trailer opens with Hitchcock’s unmistakable baritone in voiceover: “I once made a movie. It was intended to cause people to scream and yell, but I was horrified that some people took it seriously.

As this year’s Venice Film Festival bows, the starry annual festival continues to draw fire for a lineup that leans heavily towards the side of male-directed offerings. At this year’s festival, only one film screening in a competition section that includes 21 films is directed by a woman, Vivian Qu’s “Angels Wear White.”
Just yesterday, festival director Alberto Barbera spoke out on the demographics of this year’s lineup, making it clear that he doesn’t blame the fest for furthering an environment rife with sexism and a lack of opportunities for female filmmakers. “I don’t think it’s our fault…I don’t like to think in terms of a quota when you make a selection process,” he said. “I’m sorry that there are very few films from women this year, but we are not producing films.”

For his latest social satire, filmmaker Alexander Payne is thinking small — really small. In his “Downsizing,” the world has been revolutionized by the introduction of technology that allows people to shrink down a fraction of their size. The result is a far cheaper cost of living — who couldn’t afford a much bigger house if it was actually doll-sized? think of the savings on food! — and a much happier and healthier world. Or perhaps not?

The fall festival season officially kicks into high gear when the Venice Film Festival launches later this week (followed in short succession by Telluride, Tiff, and Nyff), but moviegoers eager to get a first peek at the year’s most exciting new selections will likely notice one distressing trend: a lack of female filmmakers hitting the Lido to bow their latest works. At this year’s festival, only one film screening in a competition section that includes 21 films is directed by a woman, Vivian Qu’s “Angels Wear White.”
It’s hardly the first time the festival has unveiled a male-dominated lineup, and it certainly seems like it won’t be the last.
Over at The Hollywood Reporter, the outlet has caught up with festival director Alberto Barbera, who seems unpreturbed about the gender disparity in his lineup, and even less driven to correct it.

Diversity is kind of a hot topic nowadays. As citizens of a melting pot of a culture, it’s nice to be represented in mainstream entertainment. And if we’re being honest, it’s not just about diversity, but authenticity. It always rings a bit false when you have a white person portraying a person of color. It’s especially easy to get away with this in animation, where you don’t even see the voice actors.
Studios have gotten away with this practice for years, but in today’s world, they’re making a conscious effort to create films that respect the culture it’s portraying, and part of that has to do with the voice cast. This newer approach is expanding to Coco, the latest film from Pixar inspired by Día de Muertos, a celebration of the dearly departed.

The Queen may be Great Britain’s longest-reigning monarch, but there’s another woman who forever changed the country’s monarchy: Wallis Simpson.
The American-born Duchess of Windsor, who died this week in 1986, is the reason Queen Elizabeth eventually took the throne. As any fan of The Crown could tell you, Simpson’s eventual husband, King Edward VIII, gave up the throne after less than a year because his family (and parliament) wouldn’t accept Simpson, the woman he loved (and a two-time divorcée) as Queen.

To celebrate the release of Notebook contributor Clare Nina Norelli's book for the 33 1/3 series, Soundtrack from Twin Peaks, the following is an excerpt from its introduction. A bass sounds a twangy, resonant low F accompanied by a barely there, quarter-note cymbal ostinato. An F(add2) chord follows on Rhodes, warm and inviting, like a secret confession. Straining for resolution, the chord descends to settle on a straight F chord, its downward trajectory forming the musical approximation of a lovelorn sigh. The pattern is repeated, but two steps lower, beginning on a D in the bass. Suddenly, a wash of synthesized strings and French horn pours over the mix accompanied by a cool wave of guitar tremolo, oscillating between B-flat(sus2) and B-flat major chords and then sliding up to C(sus2) and C major. The melody in the synth-strings and French horn swirls, as if caught in a whirlwind, and then begins to rise,...

Murray, however, told Page Six that Paris' hostile reaction is a result of her underdeveloped brain and brainwashing from Jackson's family. "[Paris] is a child. She's a young adult,"...

While several films such as Finding Dory, The Secret Lives of Pets and even Suicide Squad (despite its poor critical reception) did some very impressive business at the box office, this summer season was packed full of dud movies. Interestingly, many of them were films that were predicted to be big successes but, in the event, fell someway short of the mark.
One explanation for this is that there were just too many ‘must-see’ movies around this year. Usually a big release would have a while to build up a healthy box office but, in 2016, they only had a few days before the next hotly-anticipated film was stealing their thunder.
Whatever the reason may be for their failure, here are the eight biggest box office flops of the summer. Take a look at them starting on the next page and let us know if you think any of the films...

This weekend while Suicide Squad suffered one of the biggest superhero second weekend dropoffs ever and Pete's Dragon had one of the mildest starts for a Disney remake, Sausage Party was breaking box office ground for adult animation. The high concept comedy had the biggest opening ever for animated film meant for grown-ups, passing 2007's violent Beowulf (apologies for reminding you of its existence).
While Party is unlikely to repeat the animation for grownups Oscar nomination breakthrough that Anomalisa achieved last year, this strong box office opening shows that medium doesn't need to appeal to the kiddies to be commercially viable. The most popular toons often become so partly because they are equally embraced by adults - we love animation just as much, so the rarity of one aimed squarely at us remains perplexing. Gorey: The Secret Lives of Edward Gorey Written and directed by Travis Russ Presented by Life Jacket Theatre Company, Here, NYC April 30-May 22, 2016
If you’ve ever watched the opening of the long-running PBS anthology series Mystery!, then you’ve seen the art of Edward Gorey. If you haven’t, well, he is not the most mainstream of artists, though perhaps the mainstream has edged closer to his sensibility in our post-Tim Burton, post-Hot Topic world. Sony Pictures is getting ready to move forward on their upcoming Jumanji remake, and they are in talks with Dwayne Johnson and Kevin Hart to star in the movie. The two recently starred in the action comedy Central Intelligence.

They aren’t confirmed for the film yet. According to Variety, the actors are both incredibly busy, and they are trying to work out their schedules so they can make this work. If they can do that they’ll most likely end up striking a deal.
