Alex De La Iglesia's first Sci-Fi movie plenty of horror , comedy , gore , amusement and embarrassing situations
ma-cortes22 June 2016
Devilishly funny Sci-Fi-terror-black comedy about some mutants become involved into incredible and frightening adventures . They're a band formed by hunchbacks , cripples , a two-headed man , mentally handicapped people and other mutants , all of them are likeness to ¨Francisco Ibañez's comic books roles¨. This is a full-on surreal Science Fiction movie that blends thrills , a lot of fun , suspense , tension as well as an intriguing script full of underlying lack seriousness . This Spanish SciFi/Fantasy/comedy is Alex De la Iglesia's first foray into absolute and total lunacy , being titled ¨Mutant action¨ or ¨Acción Mutante¨ . The flick centers on a band of attackers , a terrorist group of mutants led by Ramon Yarritu (Resines) abduct at a wedding party the daughter of a wealthy owner , Patricia Orujo (Frédérique Feder), to claim for the rights of the ugly people . But the rich man , the powerful businessman Orujo (Fernando Guillen Cuervo), trying to flee her at whatever cost . As the gang escaping from the police in their spacecraft , Ramon tries to doublé-cross his band in order to get all the ransom . The journey ends abruptly when they crash in Axturiax (shot in Almeria) , the planet (which bears remarkable resemblance to Tatooine of Star Wars) of the crazy miners where no woman live . There Ramón gets trapped by strange bands , weird people , a boastful saloon , as he falls into the clutches of a rare family and many other things . Meanwhile , Ramon and Patricia have been pursued by Rednecks , polices and the wealthy man along with his heavily armed hoodlums .

Alex De la Iglesia's Sci-Fi , horror comedy blends creepy elements with humor , tongue-in-cheek and thrills ; so, the tone of the film is light-hearted . It's a veritable buffet of the cream of the Spanish nineties , full of action , laughs , scares and attacks . Packed with scenes of fantastic nature , robust comedy , this story is exciting as well as frightening , as we follow the strange situations of some peculiar kidnappers whose destination is dictated by terrible events . The narration is so filled with quirk characters , crazy violence mixed with eerie elements and an underlying sense of surprise , and it is so excessive and plenty of fantastic elements , one can't help but keep watching , much as it is over the top in many an occasion . There are a lot of ¨comic books¨ references , such as ¨Lorna and his robot¨, ¨Judge Dredd¨ by John Wagner and ¨Frank Miller's Dark night¨. And the night city is similarly recreated to ¨Total recall¨(1990 , Paul Verhoven) and some scenes pay tribute to ¨The hills have eyes¨(1977, Wes Craven) . De La Iglesia reigns in his style this time around and gives an utterly watchable takedown of Science Fiction/comedy that certainly delivers a few madly inspired moments . Once again De la Iglesia exemplifies why he's one of the most amusing Spanish filmmakers currently churning out foreign cinema , adopting frenetic storytelling much like Quentin Tarantino , Brian Singer , or Matthew Vaughn might dream up . Enjoyable main cast and agreeable support actors deliver one of the most engaging , hysterical, action packed and wonderfully shot Sci-Fi movie in years . Ensemble cast boasts some of Spain's biggest film and TV stars , such as Antonio Resines/Ramón whose character mingles aspects from Terminator (James Cameron , 1984) and Pinhead (Hellraiser) , and the two-headed role by recently deceased Alex Angulo is lookalike monster ¨Basket Case¨(1982 , Frank Henenlotter) . Further cast members are first class Spanish star system such as Karra Elejalde , Jaime Blanch ,Ramón Barea , Bibiana Fernández , Rossi De Palma , and Santiago Segura ; most of them Alex De Iglesia's ordinaries .

It has a nice production design by Arri and Biaffra , plenty of creativity . Catching musical score ,including popular Spanish songs ; furthermore , ¨Mission impossible¨ classic score by Lalo Schifrin. Colorful as well as atmospheric cinematography by Carles Gusi . De La Iglesia , is well known as the Spanish king of black comedy . He's a cool director has got several successes : ¨Dying of laughter¨ , ¨Baby's room¨ , ¨Oxford murders¨ , and ¨Perdita Durango¨ is probably the weirdest Javier Bardem film ever made . And , of course , ¨Day of the beast¨ and ¨La Comunidad¨ obtained the unanimous praise of both the critics and the public and result to be a lot of fun¨, especially for those who enjoy surrealist humor , they won several Goya prizes and and resulted to be a turning point in his meteoric career ; from then on he became his own producer, beginning with '800 bullets' (2002) through the Pánico Films company . In addition , he produced a TV Series : ¨Pluton BRB Nero¨ (2009) with similar characters and atmospheres to Mutant action . Winner of several Goyas (Spanish Oscars), however his movies have not yet reached box office in USA, but he has strong followers , as his films have a kind of comic edge to them . Nonsense, ridicule , laughters , absurdity , disturbing scenes and many other issues ; you can find everything in this flick . ¨Acción Mutante¨ captures the essence of the best Alex De La Iglesia, a filmmaker who, at this point in his own story, is respected and admired worldwide and has the most committed fans in the film universe . This Spanish SciFi-comedy was much praised by critics as well as public during its European festival run . Being a big winner with various statues Goyas was this Alex De la Iglesia's comedy which dominated the technical categories . This is without a doubt a thrilling and enjoyable movie to be enjoyed for Sci-Fi/comedy aficionados and Alex De Iglesia fans .

Mutants....more like Handicaps.
ElijahCSkuggs4 December 2007
Warning: Spoilers
After seeing El Dia De La Bestia I was very much hyped up about Accion Mutante. From the likable characters and intelligent writing to the quick pace the film held throughout. But unfortunately Accion Mutante didn't deliver for me in the slightest.

Accion Mutante starts off like it may be a crazy team based action flick with characters all over the place. But instead they get rid of that idea for a simple kidnap and revenge type film. And honestly I think they made the wrong choice. I was enjoying all the different types of "mutants", even though they're really just handicapped people, which was also disappointing. But instead of keeping the Mutants, they get rid of them and your left with only a couple. And only one of the characters is even slightly likable. The main character known as Ramon is unlikable, unfunny and wasn't suited for the role very well. He's got the most screen time out of anyone in the film, and he bored the hell out of me. You do end up meeting more and more characters as the film goes on, but none are very entertaining. More like annoying. The film has a very dirty feel that I also didn't enjoy, it reminded me of a early Bruce Campbell film called Mindwarp. Though I do have to admit the sets were nice, the ship interior reminded me of another film called City of Lost Children. The only thing about Accion Mutante I liked was the violence. There was lots of shooting and a nice razor blade scene. But besides that it was average at best in almost all other departments.

I'm actually very surprised that every comment on here is so into this film. One review even implied if you enjoy the movie Freaked, you'll enjoy this. Freaked is my favorite movie. And I disagree with that statement 100%. I'd agree if the original Mutante team stayed together, since Freaked is based around a large cast, but nope, they got rid of that very early on. Accion Mutante definitely has a look and feel to it that a lot of people will enjoy, but it'll never reach the cult status that El Dia De La Bestia will reach. That's for sh!t sure. A generous 6 outta 10.

Dysfunctional Crazy Mutant Kidnappers. Great !!!!
RoMa723 September 2008
This movie is crazy. In a good way. That is if you like crazy and understand Spanish. Having seen "El día de la Bestia" (which blew me away, great movie), in Spain during Spanish lessons, I turned my attention to other movies made by Alex de la Iglesia and the only DVD I could find back in the Netherlands was this one (or "Mutant Action", as it was called). I like odd, strange, out-of-the-ordinary movies. So this one really appealed to me: it was chaotic, weird, sometimes creepy, violent. Although it's not De la Iglesia's best movie, it's still pretty good. (I'm not gonna write what the story is about. Go see it for yourself.)

Hysterically funny, over-the-top mutant action movie.
kasturi-14 April 2001
Like the title says, this movie is an action flick about, well, mutants. Mutants who are terrorists trying to blow up the "beautiful people" of the world. I suspect, having read other viewer comments, (after being appalled by spelling and grammar), that this film will appeal to a very small, select audience. Personally, I laughed so hard, my face actually hurt. Rarely have I seen a more entertaining, goofy, hilarious, science fiction/thriller, and complete romp of a film.

"Accion Mutante" is certainly over-the-top, and it plays fast and loose with plot development, but that's part of its charm. If you're looking for a "serious" action movie, or one with some kind of point (i.e. only handsome, muscle-ridden Americans with cool sunglasses can save the world), then this is not the movie for you. But if you have an outrageous, wacky sense of humour, and you enjoy gonzo SF movies with lots of ridiculous gore and totally unrealistic violence, that leave no holds barred, then take a look at "Accion Mutante"--you'll probably love it.

For aficionados of films with the sensibility of "Freaked", "Eating Raoul", "Big Trouble in Little China", the pacing of "Aliens", and a similar amount of violence to "Fight Club". Not a subtle film, but definitely an entertaining one. And when was the last time you were actually entertained at the movies?

A lot of Spanish local jokes in an (im)probable future
rsnunez30 December 2002
The problem with Acción Mutante, if any, is that it is packed with a lot of local jokes that make little or no sense outside of Spain and some Spanish speaking countries. Perhaps that is why the movie suffers in the second half. However, I think is playful and interesting.

Zany Spanish slasher sci-fi
Vortrek29 September 2008
Spanish sci-fi. The mutants are a totally whacked out gang of murdering robbers, including a Siamese twin pair. They accidentally murder all the guests at a wedding party to simply kidnap the bride. Race across the galaxy to a seedy bar on a barren mining planet to claim treasure, love, revenge, or freedom. Very darkly filmed-- it's a shame there isn't a brighter version for DVD. A cosmo bar helped make the original Star Wars the monster great film. A seedier place in American Astronaut was interesting, until the film degenerated in homoeroticism. Otherwise film has been pretty stingy with space bars. They receive more attention in TV sci fi. If you're interested in the theme, Accion Mutante is a film to see.

Mutants ftw
kosmasp17 October 2023
No pun intended - I had never seen this before and thought I would include this to my Shocktober challenge this year .. little did I know: this is not actually a horror movie! Some may not even call it an action movie - more like a parody Science Fiction .. comedy thing or another.

I am not saying it to put the movie down (though you have to have love for madness and low budget style movies - even though it had a couple of millions in budget, so it is not that low budget if we are honest) ... just telling you how it is. Probably best to watch the trailer for most, before engaging in a movie you might not like and waste your time on. The beginning of it not being too overwhelming either ... but the movie has cool (read crazy) and funny ideas ... if you are weird and into insanity ... well sort of! I reckon I should have looked for El Dia de la bestia ... that surely is a horror movie, right? Also got to rewatch Perdita Durango ... so little time, so many movies ...

Deliriously unfocused Debut
xn0_One18 July 2023
Alex de Iglesia's first movie "Acción Mutante" is mostly a very enjoyable ride, but could use a bit more focus on the titular theme. You expect two hours of funny cripple terrorist attacks, but you get Homages to 3-4 different genre movies de Iglesia is apparently very fond of. The first quarter of the movie is actually concerned with the "Mutants" (actually just handicapped people) shooting the so-called beautiful upper class, but is then switching gears and becomes a mix of movies like Alien, Hills have Eyes and even Mad Max at the end. It would have been more interesting to see the terrorist group doing more attacks in the futuristic city, but I guess this was prohibitive because of the very low budget of the movie (1,5 Million $ approx.). Still, I applaud the movie for its visual inventiveness and not shying away from really nasty scenes. The director unfortunately wants to do too many things at once, and cover as many of his cinematic fanboy interests as possible.

The actors are mostly excellent, which is unsusual for such low-budget movies. Antonio Resines as the "Leader" Ramon Yarritu stands out, he manages to make a despicable character almost heroic in a sense. Which is weird, as he does so many awful deeds throughout the movie. But you kind of get his point after a while, it makes sense (even if its morally wrong).

All in all, an interesting debut, albeit very unfocused and with a lot of sloppy storytelling. But it shows clearly, that Alex de La Iglesia is a talented director nonetheless. Recommended, if you are willing to look past the usual first-time director imperfections.

Uneven, but crazed, sci-fi comedy
Red-Barracuda26 July 2014
Accion Mutante is the debut feature from cult director Álex de la Iglesia. It incorporates the absurd comedy with violence template that he seems to have followed throughout the rest of his career. Also like others in his filmography such as The Last Circus and Witching and Bitching, this one starts out really well but loses a bit of steam in the final third. It's set in the future, where a terrorist group called Accion Mutante take violent action against rich hipsters and the superficially beautiful; their latest scheme sees them kidnap a society girl resulting in them being pursued to another planet by her mogul father who is bent on serious revenge.

This one has a pretty modest budget so it has to be cut some slack. Nevertheless, it makes good use of its resources at times. In particular an early high society party scene was nicely done; it was colourful and garish in a way that showed the definite influence of Pedro Almodovar who actually was a producer here. This scene along with the earlier more directly satirical ones that showed news reports on the terrorists activities were the most successful and focused parts of the film. After this opening things become more run-of-the-mill and the black comedy becomes less pointed. Ultimately, Accion Mutante is one of those movies which probably isn't as good as you think it's going to be given the potential of the central idea. It's still fun though. Of additional note is an amusing rap-rock theme song that plays in the credits.

Next stop: Oblivion
GNantes18 September 2021
With the due respect that its director, Álex de la Iglesia deserves, this film contributes absolutely nothing to the History of Cinema; even as an almost independent film (doubtful since it is seen that it has production costs) it does not seem to have anything new under the sunlight. Comedy without humor, sexist. Unattractive sci-fi, with a retro style that ages it even more. I wanted it to be a great first-time work, but it's true what they say, no artist is a born genius.

By no means a cheesy film!
chriscdymond9 July 2001
Do not be fooled into thinking that Accion Mutante is merely a darkly humorous schlock space-horror-action movie. It aggressively and successfully attacks 'decent' society, the media and the action movie genre itself in equal measures and still manages to be genuinely funny, shocking and surprising. Paul Verhoeven has been trying to make a film like this for years, but in my opinion has never got close.

Mutante is pure Science Fiction (and I mean SF *not* Sci-Fi) - deadly anti-bourgeois social commentary wrapped in a delicious coating of blood, sugar and intergalactic terrorism.

Nice one!

Wow it is BAD
pawelzietek8 July 2010
One of the worst films I saw. I don't know why I did as I already knew de la Iglesia's other "achievements" and the only film that saves itself is "La Comunidad". It is punk film for punk kids and let get it clear, I'm not an anarchist and I'm not that as young as I would like to be but you may like the flick if you are one. Also being Spanish can be helpful - I'm not. Anyway: if you dig this one, try also "Torrente" and "Airbag" - I hated those as much as I hated "Accion Mutante", but plenty of my Spanish mates were recommending all of those three films. I guess it's just a question of "gustos". Back to the review: acting is bad, so and storytelling, directing, and work of camera. The movie looks like it is done by a film school drop out on 2nd class ganja. Beware!!! Or enjoy!!! if you like this kind of films - I certainly don't...

Hysterically demented sci-fi/horror/comedy
KGB-Greece-Patras4 September 2004
While other reviewers suggest this started out well but later lost focus, to me it went vice versa. Starts out OK, trying to balance between hilarity and supposed social commentary and of course action and blood-sheding. It manages quite well (hey this is low budget!) but I don't think the director meant for serious satire or comment on high society and life style etc. others suggested. Anyway, at the final third part, when the spaceship reaches the planet, the film gets to its high point! I had a great time watching this film, it's funny (in a twisted way), there's blood and sickness. It's high time of entertainment. It reminded me of BRAINDEAD & BAD TASTE of Peter Jackson, as well as BODY MELT of Philip Brophy and maybe a bit Mad Max (by the way ALL Australian films). Just don't expect TOO MUCH. Fans of mainstream sci-fi cinema: STAY AWAY!

Fabulously twisted sci-fi comedy
Fles10 January 2004
Accion Mutante are a group of disabled terrorists who think of themselves as mutants and who see their mission as being to rid the world of pretty people and superficiality. Unfortunately, they are quite fabulously inept at what they do, and they are totally mistrusting of each other (with good cause, it turns out!)

This film is a comic masterpiece: the direction is a cinematic treat and the more times you watch it, the better it gets.

To give you an idea of just how impressed I was, I rented the film once and then went back to the rental shop and bought that copy from them.

If you enjoy off-beat, quirky movies that defy genre then you're going to love this; if you don't enjoy such eccentric celluloid expeditions then you may surprise yourself by enjoying this anyway. I can assure you that it'll be unlike anything you've seen before - go on, take a chance.

Grandly grotesque
plan9-149-9598146 November 2015
One of the best and most under-rated films I've seen in years! A black comedy in the truest sense. The scenario is outrageous, but never jabs you with that "get the joke?" elbow. The performances are true to character and slyly developed. I've never encountered any of these actors before, but they are all terrific and I'd watch almost anything they've subsequently made.

You may have to hunt for a crisp English subtitled print; beware the Substance 2002 DVD release that claims to be remastered, but is quite muddy, and I highly doubt it's a "remaster" as I've seen better non-subbed prints.

PS - the wedding cake scene is worth the price of admission alone.

Flawed but still outstanding!
Infofreak1 September 2001
I'm a real admirer of Alex de la Iglesia's superb supernatural comedy thriller 'The Day Of The Beast', so I was really looking forward to watching 'Accion Mutante', his previous movie. It started off superbly as a exciting, violent and witty black comedy about a gang of (mostly deformed) mutant terrorists intent on destroying "the beautiful people" and their mediocre, hypocritical society. They kidnap the daughter of a bourgeois business and hold her for ransom.

Fantastic! All was going great, the balance between satire, action and silliness was handled imaginatively, but half way through the movie changes direction, and becomes increasingly less interesting. The planet where Mutant Action land to make their exchange is populated by a family of grotesques similar to one's in Philip Brophy's equally bizarre 'Body Melt', or like some of the stranger characters seen in the comics of Garth Ennis. Unfortunately for me the movie loses focus at this point, all the earlier potential for surreal social criticism is abandoned, and it becomes a standard b-grade sci fi action flick with only a few good bits.

It's a shame to me that the movie didn't continue in the approach of its first half, because I think if it did it would be a classic piece of science fiction. As it is, with all its flaws, it's still better than 90% of American SF movies made in the last 15 years, and recommended viewing. Please track down 'The Day Of The Beast' though, it's sensational!

Good symbolics of society behind a very black humour
Cescotto6 June 1999
-Ramon : We're gonna show those assholes what terrorism is ! » La banda terrorista « Accion Mutante » hates cosmetics, slimming diets, sperm banks, plastic surgeons, aerobics and all that's beautiful people's advantage. They're ugly, bad, twisted, dumb and mutant. Excepted Ramon, the leader with a half-burned face, who's much more clever than the other ones. « I'm a pro », he says to himself while he's right in the middle of the desert with the only woman of the planet Axturias. We have to say the women are very demanded on this planet. This lady, Patricia, Ramon kidnapped her on Earth : she's an important businessman's rich daughter, and he has to exchange her an for a large ransom.

Classic situation, till a Stockolm Syndrome out of the ordinary. Patricia tenderly addresses him a stupid «I love you», kinda «The Young and the Restless», and Ramon answers in the end by starting up a general gunfight as worthy as John Woo's best ones ! Imposing !

In this Alex de la Iglesia's first feature film, the football-suited cops are as twisted as the reporters : some thrash and kill over the slightest thing and others show the pigs' «feats» on T.V. News

The original soundtrack is excellent, composed by Def Con Dos, a cool band which is almost unknown out of Spain, alas.

Antonio Resines , as the leader of the terrorists, plays his part horribly well, as well as Alex Angulo, the siamese dragging his stuffed brother. In a distinctly softer kind, you can find an Antonio as good in « Como ser mujer y no morir en el intento », and Alex Angulo in Iglesia's second feature film, « El dia de la bestia ». This second film is as successful as his big brother ! I've never seen such a black humour than in this terrific movie among terrific ones : « Accion Mutante ! »

I'll give 10/10 for that « sci-fi/black comedy » super film !

Cheesy, hilarious at the wee hours of the morning
a_carling9 July 2002
At three am in the morning, after working, to sit in front of the international station and see this movie was a wonderful way to unwind. Aside from the obvious cheesy this movie is it also sports some very well placed and also hidden humor that can catch you unaware. All the way to the end it is made up from moments of madness, not unlike "the thief, the cook, and the lover", it reigns way up there in the realms of monty python, (to some) and as bad as the attack of the killer tomatoes, it could have easily been a cult movie given the air time. I especially enjoyed the closing scene ( no not because the movie was over), but because all the corpses sat up and sang the bad bad ending song...............a slap to the conventional, nah, just good light hearted fun.

Viva Mutant Action!
Rapeman135 January 2007
Warning: Spoilers
This bizarre sci-fi / action / horror / comedy hybrid is set in a post-apocalyptic world where Accion Mutante (or Mutant Action) a group of terrorist mutants are trying to realize their goal of eradicating all the beautiful people in the universe by going around assassinating body builders, blowing up sperm banks, and massacring a TV aerobics class live on air. When their leader Ramon is released from prison they set up a plan to kidnap the daughter of a wealthy business man at her wedding, their plans go horribly wrong (the hunchback gets stabbed while hiding inside the wedding cake) and the wedding ends in a massacre, BUT they still eventually secure the girl, who's lips they staple shut, bundle her into their space ship and take her off to the planet where they'll be meeting her father with the ransom money. While in transit to the planet however, their scheming leader manages to off the other members of the gang by turning them on each other - except the Siamese twins, of which he only kills one, who is forced to drag his dead brothers body around with him for the rest of the film - so he can keep all the cash for himself. When the leader Ramon and his hostage (who has now developed Stockholm syndrome) land on the planet they meet the Crazy Miners who are all insane from constantly inhaling some kinda gas, who take them in and feed them but then turn on them an try to gang rape Patricia, the kidnapee because there are no women on this particular planet and they're fiendin' for some pussy. They eventually escape and make it to the pick up point for the ransom money, where more f uck-ups ensue, and it all ends in a big explosion where everyone dies.... except for Patricia the kidnapped bride and the single Siamese twin who was in love with her the whole time and they live happily ever after. The End.

I really dug this early film from Álex de la Iglesia (of The Day of the Beast fame). Its a fun little black comedy with themes of social satire, quite a bit of the old ultra-violence, trashy sci-fi trappings and some cripples to keep you amused. 7/10

Not so much a horror film, but a murderous call to harms!!!!!
Weirdling_Wolf29 August 2021
Visionary celluloid terrorist Álex de la Iglesia's hyper-adrenalized 'Acción mutante' (1993) is my kinda' madly-mutated, heroically hybridic action /horror freak-out!!!! Demonstratively one of the 90s more twist-headed Sf/WTF classics! Not so much a horror film, but a murderous call to harms!!!!! Right on!!! An outrageously outré, bourgeois-bashing delight!

Brilliant, if uneven.
gargoyletongue24 July 2003
After long being a fan of Day of the Beast and Perdita Durango, I managed to finally track this down in the bargain bin of a second-hand video shop, and I certainly wasn't disappointed by it. The first half, taking in spoof news programmes (similar to the mock psychic phone-in show in ...Beast), a phenomenally kitsch Almodovar-esque party scene, and large amounts of extreme violence, is brilliant. As always, beneath the violence, humour and genre-spoofery, de la Iglesia engages in a serious subtext of social criticism, in this case of beauty-led bourgeois culture.

Unfortunately, this serious side is abandoned in the second half, as is anything resembling a decent plot. However, right till its end the film remains hugely entertaining, if ramshackle in structure, and is crammed with eccentric and unusual touches and beautifully shot. Alex Angulo is as brilliant as always, and the film provides an interesting insight into the origins of its director's wonderful subsequent work.

An entertaining, satirical, ultra-violent black comedy movie
Moby-1311 October 2000
The film starts off as a satirical, blackly humorous, look at society, where a group of disabled terrorists (Accion Mutante), reunited with their newly released leader Ramon, kidnap a beautiful wealthy socialite Patricia at a bloody raid on her wedding reception. The kidnapping is the culmination of a campaign of anti-beautiful people terrorism, and leaves half of the terrorists dead after a violent battle at the reception.

After this stage of the film, the film takes a turn to a SCI-FI crime black comedy, where Ramon takes Patricia to a rendezvous on a distant planet in a pure money-grabbing ransom attempt (none of the anti-beauty ideals of Mutante Accion remain). On board the ship, Ramon starts to spread dissent among the remaining gang members, resulting in the death of all of them bar one, who happens to be half of a siamese twin (leading to some pretty disturbing scenes later in the film). The socialite eventually falls for her kidnapper, even though he treats her particularly roughly, and is only after the money. There ends up being a race to the ransom rendezvous between the half siamese and Ramon, with Ramon and Patricia meeting up with a family reminiscent of the inbreeds in Texas Chainsaw Massacre, and the siamese being strung up with his dead brother, eventually causing their separation. The showdown at the end between Ramon, Patricia's father, and the twin, leaves nearly everyone dead.

If this doesn't interest you in this gem of a film, let me add that it was not really cheesily done. The story was done in an exuberant style (not in content, but in the rapid pace and settings of the film). Although extremely violent and bloody, it fitted with the story, and the high quality of effects added a real feel to the film.

This is one of my all time favorite films. I would love this on DVD...

Strange, surrealistic mixture inspired by movies like "Time Bandits", "Mad Max", or "Brazil". Some disabled people form a terrorist group to attack the rich and beautiful. The plot is a bit crappy; the movie focusses on obscure characters like Alex, the siamese twin. Additionally, there is some slight critics on politics and society, which are not to overestimate. The beginning is a bit lame; I like the movie more in the second part, when they land on that strange planet.

Generally, "El dia de la bestia" is the better one of Iglesias two well-known movies. It is more thrilling, has an better atmosphere and is even more funny.

Evil movie by an evil man. Unfortunately well made, with the budget it had.

Accion Mutante is funny, brilliant and stylish. Without a budget. Accion Mutante is also a very evil movie. Its aim is to lure young people into the "coalition of the dispossesed". By portraying the ugly, freakish, failed as cool and attractive. And by portraying violence, cruelty and avarice as freedom and enjoyable. Iglesia and other monsters like him layed the groundwork a generation ago. Now we can see how their work and their genious bears fruit on the streets with the destruction of the heroes of the past and with the veneration of the sexually confused. The goal seems to be to sully beauty and purity wherever it can be found and reduce humans to animals with no thought of the future or of the past, just primitive beasts that exist in an eternal now.

The movie itself is about malformed and failed people that hate successful and healthy people. And kill them just out of spite. And look good doing it. And of course the leader of the monster freaks get the well brought up beautiful European woman to fall in love with him. This is a dead give away what the movie is trying to accomplish.

Technically, the look and feel of the movie is as a poor b-movie. However, it makes up for it in with, brilliance of concept and shamelessness.
