In the days since legendary filmmaker Richard Donner’s death at age 91, his longtime wife, Lauren Shuler Donner, has taken comfort in the outpouring of love and support from the “Superman” director’s fans and colleagues.
“Each one is more remarkable than the next,” Shuler Donner tells Variety about the stories she’s heard about her late husband. “He was a prankster, a lover. He was an extraordinary man, and I want everybody to celebrate him in their own way.”
Since news broke of Donner’s death on Monday, industry leaders including Steven Spielberg (who wrote the story for “The Goonies”) and Donner’s “Lethal Weapon” stars Mel Gibson and Danny Glover have been among those publicly mourning the director’s passing.
“Somebody who’s prominent in the business, told me that when they were young [in the 60s or 70s], they were somewhere, and suddenly there was a ripple in the room, and somebody whispered,...

On his previous two albums as Particle Kid, Micah Nelson either recorded songs by himself, or invited a loose, rotating crew of friends into the studio to help. But after touring heavily with his rhythm section, drummer Tony Peluso and bassist Jeff Smith, Nelson decided to record an album with his trio entirely live in only four days. The result is Window Rock, which combines contagious pop hooks with deeply dissonant psychedelia.

The guy who has played Pee-wee for over the last 30 years, as well as voiced major characters like Max in Flight of the Navigator, and Rx-24 in the old Star Tours ride at Disney parks has been in so many things we never even knew besides the things we love him for. As I thought about the loss of Penny Marshall earlier this week, something occurred to me. Ron Howard might have given fellow sitcom star Tom Hanks – the “Bosom Buddies” star who also did guest spots on “Happy Days” — his first meaty film role as a leading man in 1984’s “Splash,” in which he charmingly romances Daryl Hannah’s mermaid. But it was Marshall, along with brother Garry, who saw more dramatic potential in the actor who started off doing Shakespeare on stage.
Post-“Splash,” Hanks would be recruited to host “Saturday Night Live,” his first of nine stints and a sign he had arrived. But his follow-up movies such as “Bachelor Party,” “The Man With One Red Shoe,” “Volunteers” and “The Money Pit” were the kind of generic comedies that depended on slapstick and rowdy humor to milk laughs.

Heard also had memorable roles in 1998's Big, as Tom Hanks' rival, and the movie Beaches of that same year, as Bette Midler's husband.

When I was a kid, I always saw other kids driving around in those little battery powered plastic cars. I always wanted one but never got one. I had a bike, and I was supposed to be happy about that. Now... Now there's this. This beautiful creation made by Radio Flyer. A children's Star Wars Landspeeder.
I'm sure you all recognize the look of this because Luke was driving it around in Star Wars: A New Hope. Unfortunately, the toy Landspeeder doesn't hover, but it does comfortably seat two children who can drive it around on smooth terrain.
I don't have kids. But now I want them. Now. They will drive this around and I can live through them and they can have the childhood I wanted to have. Argh! I can't wait to get married and get this child to an age where he or she can drive this.

AnimationFix: Your regular round-up of the latest animation news, from HitFix reporter Emily Rome Moonbot Studios released their latest animated short online this week, and it’s a sweet ode to imagination and forever being a child at heart. The five-minute short, Taking Flight, is also a tribute to Antonio Pasin, inventor of the Radio Flyer wagon and depicts a small boy’s boring day that turns into an adventure spent with his grandfather. It’s cute, and it has a timely if oft-heard message urging kids (and adults!) to stop looking at their screens all the time and get outside. But the film falls short of the creativity and unique charm of Moonbot’s first short, The Fantastic Flying Books of Mr. Morris Lessmore, an ode to the power of story and a tale of renewal inspired by the destruction left by Hurricane Katrina. That short, which used a hybrid of stop-motion,...

"You know, that wagon used to be your dad's. What say we take it out for a spin?" Well, now this is just wonderful. Brandon Oldenburg has made a short film called Taking Flight that is inspired by the life and heritage of Antonio Pasin, the Italian inventor of the Radio Flyer wagon. The short tells the story of a boy named Tony who spends the day with his grandpa Nonno and ends up going on an unexpected adventure. There's a really beautiful blend of animation styles in this, along with some lovely music to top it off. This reminds me a bit of that movie Radio Flyer from my youth, where two kids build a Radio Flyer wagon that actually flies. This is also just an outstanding original short worth five minutes of your time to watch. Enjoy. Description from Vimeo: "Taking Flight is a short film inspired by...

During McAlevey’s tenure there, he partnered with Michael Douglas on Stonebridge, where they produced such films as Flatliners (1990), Double Impact (1991), and Radio Flyer (1992). Outside of Stonebridge, McAlevey also produced the romantic comedy Hard Promises (1991), starring Sissy Spacek and future CSI star William Petersen, which bowed at the Toronto International Film Festival. After Stonebridge shuttered in 1994, McAlevey launched Thunderbrid Pictures, which made such pics as Klash (1995) and the boxing remake Body And Soul (2000). Other credits include Shadow Hours (2000) and the System of a Down docu Screamers (2006). The Columbia University grad, who roadied for the New York Dolls during their 1970s heyday, also produced last year’s horror pic Kill Her,...

A slew of classic Disney movies are hitting for the first time on Blu-Ray, including one double-pack release, and you’re going to want to make sure to pick these up. You haven’t paid attention to some of these titles for a while, and it’s about time you got the chance to catch them on Blu-Ray. The best part is that there’s a great mix of releases hitting. Bedknobs and Broomsticks is all but lost in the cultural consciousness, and it deserves a return. The Academy Award-winning movie from the year I was born is filled with a lot of fun and adventure, and like most Disney films, holds up well for a whole new generation.
The rest of the group covers a great spectrum, including two animated “big” titles, and a 10th Anniversary release. There’s a lot to expose your family to here, so check out all the info below,...

Anaheim, Calif. -- The items arrive by the thousands, borne on furniture dollies, in Radio Flyer wagons or nestled carefully in owners' arms. The hodge-podge parade consists of paintings, teapots, firearms, mannequins decked out in military uniforms and more. Much more.
Grade-schoolers have show-and-tell for their treasures. The adult counterpart is PBS' "Antiques Roadshow," which has become an institution as it approaches its 18th season and holds fast as public television's highest-rated series.
That's right: It's No. 1. Not glamorous, romantic "Downton Abbey," but homespun and earnest "Antiques Roadshow," where Civil War firearms, Tiffany lamps and autographed baseball cards are the stars. Even Kevin Bacon watches it, which he admits in an on-air PBS promo.
As the show hopscotches from U.S. city to city, each stop draws some 6,000 people and the one or two possessions they believe are – or, wishful thinking, might be – worth a few minutes of TV airtime and a lot of money.

This week's gonzo teen nightmare Spring Breakers is trumpeting the fact that two of its leads - Vanessa Hudgens and Selena Gomez - traditionally play "good girls". But the whole "teen idol gone bad" strategy is a longstanding Hollywood tradition aimed to help transition pigeonholed teen stars into "serious" actors.
Here are a few fellas who tried the tactic, to varying degrees of success.
Jonathan Taylor Thomas in Speedway Junky
The squeaky-clean kid from Home Improvement took a step toward tarnishing his image by playing an evil, bisexual hooker in this gritty drama, giving a whole new meaning to "Tool Time"!
Joseph Gordon-Levitt in Mysterious Skin
Jgl also went the hustler route for his breakout from small-screen teen stardom - only the 3rd Rock star went "the full gay" in this unsettling and excellent indie drama.

Justified
Stars: Timothy Olyphant, Nick Searcy, Joelle Carter, Jacob Pitts, Erica Tazel, Walton Goggins, Patton Oswalt | Created by Elmore Leonard, Graham Yost
God bless us, Raylan Givens is back.
Last season of Justified was a spiraling taut pulp tale of corruption amongst gangsters, politicians and drug runners. All these plot elements intertwined with a lockjaw precision, a reckless abandon that was still just restrained enough to be a mighty fine potboiler of a season. There were elements that I loved like Robert Quarles and the drug baron Limehouse. There were all these crackerjack elements that tied together, but it was big, it was a massive story. So, this year they changed us up, starting with a personal story out, starting with a dead skydiver (and that was a shocking set piece from the opening of the episode, and a rather gory one at that) and the drivers license of a...

Welcome to Holiday Favorites, a series in which Slackerwood contributors and our friends talk about the movies we watch during the holiday season, holiday-related or otherwise.
I've watched Bill Murray in the 1988 classic Scrooged every year since its release. Directed by Richard Donner (known for a few other favorites of mine: The Toy, The Goonies, Ladyhawke and Radio Flyer), Scrooged holds a special place in my heart for many reasons.
For one, the movie has quintessential late 80s New York City charm. I had never visited NYC before moving there from small-town West Texas, and I lived there for 12 years. When I arrived off the turnip truck, the only images I had in my head were from childhood movies and TV shows. Scrooged was one of them, along with Sesame Street, Baby Boom, When Harry Met Sally, Wall Street, etc. It turns out Scrooged was closer to the truth, but in a good way.

You don't hear many people talk about Punchline. The 1987 dramedy about stand-up comedians hoping for their big break stars Tom Hanks at the height of his early career (it hit theaters only a few months after Big). This was a Tom Hanks that was beginning to change, though, moving away from the more overt comedies like Splash, Bachelor Party and The Money Pit in order to attempt material with more emotional weight. And Punchline gave him that, though it also brought Hanks into a sort of darker period in his career. He followed Punchline with The Burbs, Turner & Hooch, Joe Versus the Volcano, The Bonfore of the Vanities and Radio Flyer before reigniting his career with a turn in 1992's A League of Their Own. That lead to Sleepless in Seattle, which brought him...

Thomas Horn's first role is a doozy. The newcomer anchors the drama "Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close," based on the novel by Jonathan Safran Foer. Studded with stars like Tom Hanks, Sandra Bullock, Max von Sydow and Viola Davis, and directed by Stephen Daldry, "Extremely Loud" is a holiday heart-tugger about a boy searching for answers after his father dies on September 11, 2001.
Age: 13
Hometown: San Francisco, California
What He's Done: Lived life, learned Croatian, rocked "Jeopardy!" You know, typical kid stuff.
What He's Doing Now: Horn plays Oskar Schell, a nine-year-old trying to cope with his father's death on 9/11. Oskar's a highly intelligent, creative kid who travels through the city clutching a tambourine, on a mission to find out more about the mysterious key he found in an envelope among his father's things.

With the re-release of Jurassic Park on the big screen here in the UK and the Blu-ray box set out this week it’s high time to catch up with one of the people who was there at the beginning.
Earlier in the week we spoke to Ariana Richards and today we have an interview with her co-star and on-screen brother Joseph Mazzello who, despite a burgeoning acting career as an adult, is still recognised for his role in the 1993 film.
He spoke to us about the legacy of Jurassic Park, how Steven Spielberg almost cast him in another film, and how a raptor almost ruined his birthday.

The Hoodwinked franchise hasn't really managed to take off like a lot of other animated ventures, and that's something of a shame really, because both films deliver for the target audience. We've gotten to a point in the theatrical release world where, because there have been so many releases that work wonderfully for both children and adults, that all films have to in order to be given a fair share of credit. I think it's gone wrong there really.
Hoodwinked Too! Hood vs. Evil, let's face it, isn't especially entertaining for adults. It plays the game to a certain degree, with a few lines that aren't really going to make sense to the youngest audiences, but it's actually geared fully toward younger humor and/or sensibilities, with the main laughs by way of crashing or falling, and the story spelled out rather simplistically.
Why that should necessarily be counted as a negative is somewhat confusing,...
