Pretty foolish, but entertaining enough
Goon-225 October 1999
Basically, Near Mrs. is a gross film with an annoyingly spelled title about an unlikeable and immoral man with two wives and a mistress who lies his way through life to spend time with them, deceives his dumb as a post and also occasionally annoying would-be employee to cover up for him and finally gets in trouble for his idiotic lies in the first place when the Dumb one gets caught up with Russians, who have an out-of-date fued with Americans and it all leads up to a ridiculous conclusion and ending.

Amazingly enough, it's a pretty entertaining movie, too.

I honestly was not fond of Judge Reinhold as the lead, or his character, but not to worry, the movie basically belongs to the second lead, played by the always likeable Casey Siemaszko, in an incredibly stupid but amusing enough subplot involving Russians. The Cold War was sort of over by then, but nevertheless, the Russians are portrayed in a pretty silly manner. But I guess everyone in this film was. I don't know if it's intentional or not(probably not), but nobody in this film is a wise and likeable protaginist. Instead, they're all presented with faults(Reinhold's character is an arrogant bigamest, Siemaszko's character is very childish, and incompetant(and has a few very bad lines, but oh well)), the American's aren't really to be trusted(there was one character who, to me, seemed to be some suggestion of Alger Hiss, but I'm not sure if it was supposed to be or not). Basically, it's something where we can watch and laugh at ourselves and our mistakes. And at the film, too, since it is sort of dumb, but it's entertaining enough and easy to follow. Better than most "bad" movies.

The funniest film I have EVER seen!
aytojones17 November 2010
I just got this film from a bargain bucket supermarket for 99p and watched it with my girlfriend. In my pants (this has no relevance to the review, just wanted to paint a picture). We thought this was going to be crap to be honest, but were BLOWN AWAY! This film is brilliant. It has elements of all the great Hollywood comedies of the 1940's and 1950's, but updated with a modern (well, 1990's) vibe. Judge Reinhold is majestic in the lead role, slipping effortlessly between high slapstick and intense melancholy about the life he has chosen. He is (at least in this movie), Phil Silvers and Jack Lemmon rolled into one - but funnier than both. Even Judge's look is hilarious, as he looks like Clark Gable with a cheeky side. This is a great family movie (apart from a couple of well placed obscenities) and we couldn't believe it was so underrated. It is up there with any of my favourite movies, and i'll be sure to watch it again and again! LOVED IT!!!!

Dated sitcom
lor_1 August 2023
My review was written in August 1992 after watching the movie on Media Home Entertainment video cassette.

Made for the cable and video market, "Near Misses" is a hopelessly dated comedy directed and performed by the numbers.

Judge Reinhold and Casey Siemaszko are the American talent in this exercise, originally titled "Last Tangle in Paris". Sitcom has Reinhold as a bigamist (with wives in Phoenix and L. A.) who works at a big research firm.

He's also in the Marine reserves and lazily decides to get minor employee Siemaszko to impersonate him for the required two weeks of reserve duty in Paris. Complications ensue when the Soviets kidnap Siemaszko in order to get satellite secrets known by Reinhold. Reinhold has to go to Paris to straighten things out, but both wives show up there looking for him.

Predictable mistaken identity gimmicks occur. Film's Cold War politics are presented as if nothing had happened recently in the former Soviet Union, destroying any viewer interest in the mechanics of the farce. Reinhold overplays his reactions to frequent crises while Siemaszko is too low-key. Rebecca Pauly and Cecile Paoli brighten things up as the wives.

Funny movie

Warning: Spoilers
Near Mrs is a dated movie ( it deals with the Cold War) but it is very funny. Judge Reinhold plays Claude Jobert, a very successful bigamist who is married to two very different women:, One sweet ( Mindy) and the other the boss's daughter ( Maggie) and is not so nice. He also has a mistresss on the side ( Toni). What he does is talk his sap for a co-worker Colin Phipps ( Casey Siemaszko) into doing his two weeks of reserve military duty for him in Paris, so he can spend time with Toni. The problems are 1: Phipps is not good at soldiering and the Marine drill sergeant makes miserable for him. 2: The Russians want Jobert because his company deals in sophisticated electronics and instead they grab Phipps thinking he is Jobert. They basically put Phipps in a "Honey Trap" with a Russian KGB Agent named Sasha. It is important to note they are quite aware that Jobert is a womanizer ( which is why they used Sasha), but all the information they find out is Colin likes baseball and girls ( especially Sasha). The audience will soon find out that Sasha is actually a combination of Jobert's wives but in one woman. Sweet and devoted like Mindy and fiery like Maggie ( especially when it comes to lovemaking). Not to mention looking better then both. Colin loves her so much she ends up falling in love with him. Spoilers ahead: In the end Colin ends up winning by proposing to Sasha ( she is shocked but says yes), and Jobert had to admit to the women he was a bigamist and you know he was going to lose his wives, and Toni ( not to mention job). Of course, it is far fetched and you knew Colin would win, and Jobert will lose, but how it all works out ( mostly because of Sasha switching sides from the KGB to Colin, but I will not spoil what she does and how she does it) which is why you watch the movie. It is a funny funny movie. 10/10 stars.
