The 1990s had a plethora of action films, and movies in general, released direct-to-video. The film rental business was booming, and some video stores even hosted signing events with the stars to promote the films and their business. Direct to video action films were the most popular Dtv genre (next to soft-core erotica) and they were produced by the ton. Every week brought a new bunch of options to your local Blockbuster or Mom & Pop store. For the purpose of this list, the titles selected are fun watches even now, that were released direct-to-video for the majority of the population, and they were decently popular on the video store shelves. Without further ado, here are 5 of our favorites!
Lady Dragon (1992)
Let’s start with the Queen of 90s action in the US, the one, the only, the kickass Cynthia Rothrock. This woman is the real deal, with many martial arts...

Ratter
Stars: Ashley Benson, Matt McGorry, Rebecca Naomi Jones, Alex Cranmer, Michael William Freeman, Kaili Vernoff | Directed by Branden Kramer
Starring Ashley Benson and Matt McGorry, Ratter is the latest in an ever-increasing list of techno-horrors focusing on modern technology being used a tool for evil… The film tells the story of New York graduate Emma (Benson), who is excited about finally getting her own place in the city despite her parents expressing their worry about her living on her own. However when Emma starts receiving weird text messages from an unknown number,...

Indie filmmakers have more funding options than they've ever had in the past, giving movie ideas, which may not have commercial studio appeal, the chance to still be made. In today's Indie Beat, I thought I'd highlight The Martial Arts Kid, which is taking to Kickstarter to fund the flick (already boasting a cast of major martial artists). Come inside to learn more!
Here at Cinelinx we like to talk about all aspects of filmmaking and movie news. To that end, we have Indie Beat where we highlight some of the latest news, trailers, and PR releases from the indie filmmaker scene. So if you're an independent filmmaker and want some coverage on our site, be sure to drop us a line at jordan@cinelinx.com .
Like all Kickstarters, there are various pledge levels which will snag you different rewards, so if you want to donate to the film be...

Adi Shankar (producer of The Grey) will produce a new all-female action-style film, to be written by Dutch Southern, kinda like The Expendables.
Now, we wrote about how this was a fucking good idea a long-ass time ago. Not only have we been excited about it in our forums, but we actually made a list a while back. The impetus for that list was a statement Sigourney Weaver made about how it sucks that she's too old to play Ripley in another action Aliens film. We were pissed that Old Dudes get to keep making action films, but Weaver didn't think she could just because she's a chick.
Let's update our wish list. Because all the dudes in The Expendables films are Old Mother Fuckers, I demand that the female cast be Old Bitches. None of this "Zoe Saldana" or "Milla Jovovich" bullshit other sites keep talking about. Seriously. Can...

Stuntman-turned-filmmaker Art Camacho has made some of my all-time favorite direct-to-video action flicks, so it’s not all that surprising that I’m quite giddy at the mere thought of him tackling a post-apocalyptic thriller starring four B-movie veterans. Cynthia Rothrock, James Lew, Martin Kove, and Don “The Dragon” Wilson are preparing to join Camacho for “The Unforgiven”, a motion picture that is almost guaranteed a screening in my house. I’m not even playing. Have a look at the official press release: Renowned action film director Art Camacho has just announced that he is currently in development/pre-production of his latest sci-fi action film “The Unforgiven”, a film about a group of undesirables on a mission to hell. This film is set in a post-apocalyptic era, where warfare has wiped out most of mankind and a ragtag set of misfits are humanity’s last hope. The Unforgiven will re-team...

Can women over 40 be awesome action heros like all those guys over 60 still are?
Amidst Sigourney Weaver's recent disappointing statements about thinking she's too old to be playing Ripley in any further Aliens franchise movies and the awesome news that Linda Hamilton may star in a Terminator 5 film, we've got our panties all fucked up because we've been debating how much we love action heroines, and how many of them are over 40 now. We don't think that's a bad thing - in fact, we think women over 40 are awesome action heroes and we think you do too. We think you'd be out in theaters in masses to see Ripley or Sarah Connor tear shit up once again, and so would we.
In a recent interview with Moviehole, filmmaker Justin Lin discussed the new Terminator movie he's producing, and seems to want Hamilton to reprise her role as the tough-as-nails freedom-fighter/mom Sarah Connor,...

While other savvy web-oriented reviewers are spending their oh-so precious moments viewing critically-acclaimed, life-affirming, award-winning motion pictures in exquisite art house theaters around the globe, I prefer to expend my lazy days off watching profoundly awful martial arts movies in my underwear. Director David Worth’s 1992 fisticuff extravaganza “Lady Dragon”, for example, is just another notch on my diseased cinematic bedpost, a wholly forgettable yarn about one woman’s quest to avenge her charming husband’s untimely death. The lady with the lethal limbs, of course, is none other than Cynthia Rothrock, star of such outstanding cinematic disasters as “China O’Brien”, “Undefeatable”, and the legendary Corey Haim caper franchise “Fast Getaway”. The only reason anyone would bother to partake in this obscure serving of generic foolishness is to witness the climatic showdown betwixt the aforementioned Rothrock and fluid Australian brawler Richard Norton. Unfortunately, “Kickboxer” mastermind David Worth has seemingly...

Fists Of Rage
Stars: Jason Barry, “Rowdy” Roddy Piper, Russell Wong, Linda Park, Masakatsu Funaki, Joanna Pacula | Written by Larry Felix Jr. | Directed by David Worth
Former childhood friends Ray (Wong) and Gabriel (Barry) return to their old neighbourhood after spending time in prison and Iraq respectively. When Gabriel refuses to participate in Ray’s illegal fights, Ray retaliates by taking out his anger of Gabriel’s friends and family. Realising it’s either fight or die Gabriel must put the pairs old friendship aside in a bloody war to take back the streets and the neighbourhood.
Also known as Honor, Fists of Rage has taken a whopping 5 years to reach these shores! Was it worth the wait? In a word, yes! Directed by David Worth, whose name you may recognise from films such classic action movies as Kickboxer, Lady Dragon and American Tigers, the film is an old-school martial...

The Expendables may have boasted a stellar line-up of 80s action stars, but that doesn’t mean we can’t hope for even more of them in its sequel. Here are Ron’s suggestions…
The Expendables isn't out just yet as I write this, but I have no doubt that it's going to be a huge hit. Well, okay, maybe it won't be a huge hit, but like Sly Stallone's return to his Rambo roots, it's going to do really well.
I mean, it's basically every major action movie star (and some minor action movie stars) from the 80s all in the same film. However, there were some shameful omissions that can be added to the mix for The Expendables 2.
I'm not talking about high profile omissions, like Jean-Claude Van Damme or Steven Crotchkicker Seagal, though those guys would be awesome to have in The Expendables universe. I'm talking about...
