Al Pacino is the Oscar-winning actor who has starred in dozens of classics throughout his nearly 50 year career, from his star-making breakthrough in “The Godfather” (1972) to his late-career triumph in “The Irishman” (2019). Tour through our photo gallery of Pacino’s 25 greatest films, ranked worst to best.
Though an acting legend, it took Pacino 20 years and eight nominations to finally cash in his Oscar I.O.U. for “Scent of a Woman”. Prior to that he competed for “The Godfather”, “Serpico”, “The Godfather, Part II”, “Dog Day Afternoon”, “… And Justice for All”, “Dick Tracy” and “Glengarry Glen Ross”, but he didn’t win any of those bids.
Surprisingly, his 1992 noms for “Scent of a Woman” and “Glengarry Glen Ross” were followed by a long Academy drought, despite additional critically acclaimed performances in “Heat” (1995), “Donnie Brasco” (1997), “The Insider” (1999) and “Insomnia” (2002). Upon securing a spot in the 2024 Best Supporting Actress Oscar lineup, Jodie Foster (“Nyad”) officially shattered the Academy Awards record for longest span between fourth and fifth acting nominations. Following her two Best Actress wins for “The Accused” (1989) and “The Silence of the Lambs” (1992), she had last been recognized in that category for “Nell” (1995), making for a general nomination gap of 29 years. Coincidentally, she took this particular distinction from fellow “Silence of the Lambs” winner Anthony Hopkins, who waited 22 years between his supporting bids for “Amistad” (1998) and “The Two Popes” (2020).
Previously, the female record for longest wait for a fifth nomination was 12 years, as shared by Julianne Moore and Frances McDormand. Considering gaps between any two consecutive acting nominations, Foster ranks well behind overall record holder Judd Hirsch, whose first and second career notices for “Ordinary People” (1981) and “The Fabelmans” (2023) came 42 years apart. His female counterpart is Helen Hayes (39 years...

As Alec Baldwin’s legal challenges continue with Friday’s indictment stemming from the 2021 Rust shooting, he has made moves to shore up his finances, which includes the star starting to appear at fan conventions and having relisted his longtime Hamptons home for $10 million under the asking price from roughly a year ago.
In a video posted this week by real estate brokerage firm Saunders & Associates, Baldwin talks to the camera about his fond memories with the 10,000-square-foot, seven-bedroom home located in Amagansett on Long Island’s South Shore. The 30 Rock alum’s abode is now on the market for $19 million after he previously listed it for $29 million. The original listing was in September 2022, less than a year after a firearm handled by Baldwin on the New Mexico set of indie Western Rust was discharged on Oct. 21, 2021, killing cinematographer Halyna Hutchins and injuring director Joel Souza.

Mike Nussbaum, a veteran stage actor and staple of the local theater scene in Chicago who also appeared in such films as “Field of Dreams,” “Fatal Attraction” and “Men in Black,” has died. He was 99.
Nussbaum, whose death on Saturday at his home was reported by multiple Chicago outlets, including the Sun-Times, would have turned 100 next Saturday.
“It’s the end of an era, the end of the Chicago school of acting,” B.J. Jones, longtime friend and colleague of Nussbaum’s and the artistic director of the city’s Northlight Theatre, told the Sun-Times just days after their last meeting. “He said he was bored. Hilarious. But he was ready to go.”
Nussbaum’s influence and range was also felt on Broadway, a stint during which he appeared in an award-winning role in “Glengarry Glen Ross,” in 1984 (he won the New York Drama Desk Award). Nussbaum, who also acted at...

One of the eternal mysteries of awards season is how to determine whether Oscar-worthy actors should compete in the lead category or in supporting. Is Lily Gladstone’s role in “Killers of the Flower Moon” significant enough to warrant a best actress nom? Is “The Taste of Things” star Juliette Binoche’s part “too big” for supporting? While stellar thesps split hairs over how they ought to be classified, another kind of performance has gone largely unrecognized — one that practically deserves its own category: best cameo. Like Alec Baldwin’s motivational speech in “Glengarry Glen Ross” or Christopher Walken’s watch story from “Pulp Fiction,” a brief appearance by the right actor can completely transform what
audiences make of a movie.
Here are our nominees for the surprise appearances that boosted this year’s awards crop. Warning: there are some spoilers ahead.

We have all spent time cursing the eternally infuriating salesman. Selling things we don’t ever seem to need or want. Always calling at the most inopportune of moments. Based on David Mamet’s acclaimed play, Glengarry Glen Ross tells the story of four middle-aged men, who are proud members of this despised breed, over the course of one long night and the following morning. Working for a real estate firm, they spend their days on the phone, enticing prospects with promises of once in a lifetime investment opportunities. Voices all smooth and friendly, introducing variations into the endlessly rehearsed and repeated pitch, trying to secure a sit. Searching for that elusive close.

There was a time when a great many people would proclaim Francis Ford Coppola's mob masterpiece "The Godfather" as the greatest American film of the last 50 years. Those people can't do that anymore. It isn't because the movie has lost any of its artistic power or breathtaking cinematic invention. It's simply because "The Godfather" is now 51 years old, having been released back in 1972. The film is now closer to 1922, five years prior to the popularization of synchronized sound in film, than it is to today, and that gap will only continue to grow thanks to the inevitable march of time.
Because of that time, we have lost so many people involved in the making of the picture, including Mario Puzo, the film's co-writer and author of the original novel, and Gordon Willis, the cinematographer who crafted the signature dark look of the picture. Also gone are many of the film's cast members,...

“Poor Things” looks set to be a major Oscar contender this year. It just won the Golden Lion at Venice and Emma Stone just took over the top spot on our Best Actress Oscar odds chart. Supporting players Willem Dafoe and Mark Ruffalo look set to match an Academy Award record.
“Poor Things” tell the tale of Stone as a young woman brought back to life by a scientist in the Victorian era. Dafoe plays the eccentric scientist, complete with a peculiar Scottish accent and killer prosthetic makeup design, while Ruffalo hams it up as the scientist’s lawyer, donning a hilarious English accent and turning up the camp to 10. Both performances are now being touted as strong Oscar contenders in the Best Supporting Actor category, which could see Dafoe and Ruffalo earn their fifth and fourth nominations respectively.
Dafoe was first nominated in 1987 for Best Supporting Actor for “Platoon.

Colman Domingo is having a moment. The veteran actor has been nominated for two Tonys in his career, but lately it’s his on-screen work that has brought him the most attention. He won his first Emmy in 2022 for guesting on “Euphoria.” He received numerous plaudits for his role in the independent film “Zola.” And he has had additional film credits including Oscar winners “If Beale Street Could Talk” and “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom.” Next he could become the 13th performer ever nominated for two Oscars in the same year.
As of this writing, based on the combined predictions of thousands of Gold Derby users, Domingo ranks fourth in our odds for Best Actor for playing the unsung civil rights hero Bayard Rustin in “Rustin.” And he places fifth in our odds for Best Supporting Actor for playing Mister in the upcoming musical adaptation of “The Color Purple.” But we...

Kevin Spacey was “like another son” to late Glengarry Glen Ross co-star Jack Lemmon, a court heard today at the American Beauty actor’s UK sex offenses trial.
During a series of 10 character references for the defense, Spacey became emotional as he reacted to the words from the likes of Chris Lemmon and House and Dead Poet’s Society star Robert Sean Leonard.
Lemmon, a stage actor who last year played his father in Blonde, said his dad saw Spacey as family and “so became like a brother to me.”
Spacey and Jack Lemmon appeared together in Glengarry Glen Ross, David Mamet’s 1992 adaptation of his play of the same name about a group of failing real estate agents who are told only the top two sellers will keep their jobs.

Acting legend Alan Arkin is dead at age 89.
The Oscar, Tony, Emmy, BAFTA, SAG, and Golden Globe winner passed away at his home.
Perhaps best known for his roles in “Glengarry Glen Ross” and “Little Miss Sunshine,” for which he won a Best Supporting Actor Academy Award, Arkin began his acting career in 1957 — and ended up with a body of work of startling range. Arkin was an early member of the Second City comedy troupe and starred on Broadway with his Tony-winning turn in 1963’s “Enter Laughing.”
His film breakout was via comedy as well: in his first major onscreen role in Norman Jewison’s 1967 Cold War caper “The Russians Are Coming, The Russians Are Coming” he plays the “political officer” on a Soviet submarine that runs aground on a small New England island of only 200 residents. The sub’s captain, too embarrassed to radio the motherland for help, sends...

Oscar-winning actor Kevin Spacey gets a thrill by preying on other men, a prosecutor told jurors during his sexual assault trial Friday in a London courtroom.
Spacey is “a man who does not respect personal boundaries or space, a man who it would seem delights in making others feel powerless and uncomfortable — a sexual bully,” Prosecutor Christine Agnew said in her opening statement. “His preferred method of assault is, it appears, to grab aggressively other men in the crotch.”
The four men who have accused Spacey of sexual assault did not know each other, but all “had the misfortune to attract” his attention, she said.
Spacey, 63, has pleaded not guilty to a dozen charges including sexual assault, indecent assault and causing a person to engage in penetrative sexual activity without consent.

Two-time Oscar winner Kevin Spacey walked into a London courtroom Wednesday to face trial on charges of sexually assaulting four men as long as two decades ago.
The actor was dressed in a dark blue suit, light blue shirt and pink tie as he was called by his full name and asked if he was Kevin Spacey Fowler.
“I am,” he said as he stood behind a window in the dock.
Spacey, 63, has pleaded not guilty to a dozen charges including sexual assault, indecent assault and causing a person to engage in sex activity without consent. He could face a prison sentence if convicted.
Spacey nodded and smiled at potential jurors as Justice Mark Wall told them that they may know Spacey by name or have seen his films.

Tyne Daly and Liev Schreiber will star in a new Broadway production next February of John Patrick Shanley’s Tony Award & Pulitzer Prize-winning play Doubt: A Parable, with direction by Scott Ellis.
The Roundabout Theatre Company production will begin performances in February 2024 at the American Airlines Theatre. Exact dates, remaining cast members, and design team will be announced at a later date.
Doubt: A Parable returns to Broadway for the first time in nearly two decades. Daly will play Sister Aloysius, in the words of the synopsis the “prickly principal of an all-boys Catholic school in a working- class part of the Bronx” who “is feared by students and colleagues alike.”

[Editor’s Note: The following review contains spoilers for “Barry” Season 4, Episode 7, “A Nice Meal.”]
For all the shows that “Barry” shares DNA with — crime dramas, black comedies, metaphysical treatises on morality — as the end nears, it’s easiest to see “Barry” as basically a more dangerous version of “The Other Two.” Hollywood satire, over-confident narcissists plummeting to depths of their own digging, relationships shredded in a heartbeat. Add a few extra corpses to the Dubek family’s peaks and valleys and you get something roughly approximating where “Barry” finds itself now: desperation, death, and jokes.
Writer Liz Sarnoff has long been helping “Barry” deliver some hard truths and difficult fates in second-to-last episodes of seasons (much like George Pelecanos did for “The Wire”). Here, she returns for “A Nice Meal,” a fourth and final Episode 7 to put a bow on these time jump transformations — not to show that all these characters are necessarily right back where they started, but that each of them has...

Writer-director David Mamet is bringing his next project to the Cannes Film Market this week, no doubt luring in international buyers with its stellar cast. “Assassination,” formerly known as “2 Days/1963” is a look at the JFK assassination from the point of view of the mafiosi who (allegedly) perpetrated the crime.
Al Pacino, Shia Labeouf, Courtney Love, John Travolta, and Rebecca Pigeon are currently attached, with Viggo Mortensen in the lead role. The screenplay was co-written by Nicholas Celozzi, whose great uncle was Chicago mob boss Sam Giancana. “Assassination” is apparently based on details shared directly by Giancana, who died in 1975.
Mamet’s last project was the 2013 HBO film “Phil Spector,” in which Pacino has starred. The cable film received five Emmy nominations, including writing, directing, and acting nods for Pacino and Helen Mirren. His last theatrically released feature was the Chiwetel Ejiofor-led mixed...

Is there anything worse than becoming obsolete? It’s a fear many share — to be slowly forgotten and discarded, left on a proverbial roadside as the rest of the world continues to innovate at pace around us. It isn’t just a business concern, but a human one: the innate craving for relevancy in a world where something or someone shinier than you is always around the corner.

For a hot minute, it looked like BlackBerry might control the smartphone market. They got there first, figuring out how to use the existing data network to put email in users’ hands. Sure, it all came packaged in a device as thick and unwieldy as a slice of French toast — too big for most people’s pockets, not at all comfortable to hold up to one’s ear. Still, Canada-based electronics company Research in Motion revolutionized how mobile phones worked and what they could do, making billionaires of its co-founders. So what happened?

Analysis: actor’s complex public persona remains intact as he faces charges in death of Halyna Hutchins
Whatever else has happened, or will happen, in the vividly eventful career of movie star Alec Baldwin, his name is destined to be linked with that of cinematographer Halyna Hutchins, whom he tragically shot dead on a movie set in New Mexico in 2021. Baldwin accidentally fired a live bullet from a revolver being used as a prop. Now he faces criminal charges of involuntary manslaughter, despite a private legal settlement Baldwin reportedly reached with the Hutchins family.

Jack Lemmon was a marvelously resourceful actor, but far from a chameleon. When you cast Lemmon, you were committing to a range of nervy emotions that could be communicated via wildly variable intensities. He could be an aspirational working stiff eager for advancement in "The Apartment," an up-against-it garment magnate in "Save the Tiger" or a veteran real estate salesman desperate to reclaim his former closing glory in "Glengarry Glen Ross," but you didn't go to his movies to see him disappear in a role like you would Laurence Olivier, Marlon Brando or Meryl Streep. You went to see Jack Lemmon. And while he made some stinkers, now that he's been gone for 21 years, you'd happily endure another "Out to Sea" just to see him be Jack Lemmon again.
Lemmon made it look so easy that it's not surprising to learn that he got his start as an actor by amusing his elementary school classmates.

Some well-established actors and a composer achieved unusual Oscar feats, while a young and upcoming actress had a surprising win. Enjoy our flashback 30 years to the Academy Awards ceremony of 1993.
Hosting for the fourth consecutive year, Billy Crystal began the 65th Academy Awards ceremony by entering astride a gigantic Oscar statue pulled by . . . the Best Supporting Actor winner from the year before, Jack Palance, who had memorably shown off his impressive push-up abilities during his acceptance speech.
Five diverse but memorable films made it into the top category of the night, and none swept; in fact, at the end of the event, 11 movies had won one award each. One of the biggest box office draws of 1992 earned a Best Picture nomination; however, “A Few Good Men” failed to claim any of its four bids. When you're in as many classic films as Jack Lemmon, it should be hard to pick a favorite. Lemmon broke into Hollywood during the last decade of its so-called Golden Age, with his first starring role being in George Cukor's 1954 "It Should Happen To You." He never stopped working, though; his last film was 2000's "The Legend of Bagger Vance," just a year before his death.
In fact, one of Lemmon's favorite movies he acted in was one from his twilight years: 1992's "Glengarry Glen Ross." Lemmon is just one of a cast stacked with stars, from Al Pacino to Ed Harris. For Lemmon, though, what made the movie special was its script written by David Mamet. "Glengarry" was originally created by Mamet as a play, one which won him a Pulitzer. Unlike these superhero figures though, Jack Ryan isn’t rich and doesn’t have powers of any kind – really he’s just a regular dude. Created by prolific writer Tom Clancy, Jack Ryan is a man from a middle-class background who uses his military experience and education in history and economics to save the U.S. from both foreign and domestic adversaries.
But even though he doesn’t appear to be much more than a normal guy, that’s what makes him more relatable than other action heroes. Jack Ryan has been able to survive through so many film and TV adaptations because he is able to handle such exceptional situations with his intelligence and determination. He’s the epitome of the “American Dream,” and that really resonates with people.

There will be spoilers for "Andor" Episode XI - "Daughter of Ferrix."
"Daughter of Ferrix," the penultimate episode of the first season of "Andor," sets the stage for what will likely prove to be a breathtaking finale. Cassian Andor (Diego Luna) has been able to escape from prison and works to find a path forward alongside Melshi (Duncan Pow). Things have taken a turn for the worse on Ferrix, though. Maarva (Fiona Shaw), Cassian's mom, has passed away and a funeral for her is being planned. As word spreads of her demise, the Isb, Luthen Rael (Stellan Skarsgård), Syril Karn (Kyle Soller), and everyone else, make plans to be there in anticipation of Cassian showing up.
On Coruscant, Mon Mothma (Genevieve O'Reilly) confesses to her cousin, Vel Sartha (Faye Marsay), just how bad things have gotten, while Vel herself aims to make them worse by causing trouble for Luthen.

The old saying goes, "Never meet your heroes because they're sure to disappoint you." But what if you have to scold your heroes when it's part of the job? That's exactly the situation Alec Baldwin found himself in while filming the 1992 film "Glengarry Glen Ross."
Despite the somewhat confounding name, "Glengarry Glen Ross" is a phenomenal film about the psychology of sales. In it, four salesmen are expected to use deceitful methods to sell real estate in two titular land developments, Glengarry Highlands and Glen Ross Farms. An intense salesman (Baldwin) from "downtown" is brought in to use scare tactics and other abusive methods to motivate the group. The film is based on the award-winning David Mamet play of the same name.
Despite only being in one scene in the entire film, Baldwin made the most of his single monologue. In an obnoxious display of imposing masculinity, complete with a literal pair of brass balls,...

I worked in sales for six years, flogging computers in a PC superstore. It wasn't a totally hard sell gig because most of the time customers were in the shop looking to buy anyway. The pressure came with adding on the extra goodies and insurance policies; that's where the profit was, and you needed to be on top of your game.
The main trick was keeping it fresh. It's easy to fall into the trap of finding yourself a sales patter that works almost every time, until suddenly it doesn't. Then you're locked into a death spiral watching your numbers plummet, wondering how the hell you're going to pull out of it. The trick is to vary things up and keep it sounding spontaneous, because one thing that will definitely put a customer on the defensive is a pitch that sounds rehearsed.
Thanks to my time on the sales floor,...

A cast of never-better actors, including Jack Lemmon, Al Pacino and Alec Baldwin, give added life to the playwright’s punchy, Pulitzer prize-winning dialogue
The title of David Mamet’s Pulitzer prize-winning play, Glengarry Glen Ross, refers to two of the real estate developments that salesmen in the drama have been pushing on investors: Glengarry Highlands and Glen Ross Farms. The names evoke verdancy and wealth, a precious swath of finite land – “they’re not making it any more”, to quote Mark Twain – and the salesmen have the glossy brochures to prove it. But it’s a swindle peddled by swindlers who themselves are being swindled. What they’re selling has no value and they have no value if they’re not selling. In the brilliant film adaptation, still electric 30 years later, a motivational speaker lays it out for them: “Only one things counts in this life: get them to...

Alec Baldwin just sort of happened all at once. For a long time, there were movies without Baldwin, and then suddenly, in 1988, there were five. He was an unfaithful slime of a husband in Jonathan Demme's "Married to the Mob," an unfaithful slime of a boyfriend in Mike Nichols "Working Girl," a creepy slime of a best friend in John Hughes' "She's Having a Baby," an ambitious slime of a radio executive in Oliver Stone's "Talk Radio" and an absolute gem of a dead man in Tim Burton's "Beetlejuice."
Baldwin was immediately pegged as a character actor with leading man potential, and got his chance to prove his worth in 1990 as Jack Ryan in John McTiernan's adaptation of Tom Clancy's "The Hunt for Red October." Ryan is a brilliant CIA analyst who correctly deduces that legendary Soviet submarine captain Marko Ramius (Sean Connery) has absconded...

Liev Schreiber wouldn’t be opposed to revisiting “Ray Donovan,” he told the audience at Karlovy Vary Intl. Film Festival on Sunday. The beloved Showtime series, created by Ann Biderman, was canceled in 2020 after seven seasons. Following the fans’ outcry, “Ray Donovan: The Movie” premiered in 2022.
“I would consider it,” he said during a masterclass.
“It was always [longtime Showtime chief] David Nevins’ baby. I know he loves this character and this story, and I wouldn’t be surprised if we hear more from David.”
Schreiber admitted he was both “disappointed and relieved” by the show’s cancellation, but the outpouring of love and support touched him deeply.
“Naomi [Watts, his ex-partner] was a bigger star than me and we were flying all over the world with our children. But they were getting bigger and they needed to go to school and live in one place. She wanted to live in L.A.
