More so than ever it seems, we've become increasingly obsessed with acknowledging the anniversaries of beloved movies, TV shows and music. Not that there's anything wrong with celebrating our pop culture past, mind you. In fact, for someone as nostalgic as myself, I completely embrace it. Which brings me to a little milestone of my own. This one, though, doesn't simply focus on a particular piece of celluloid, but instead, revolves around a certain actor whose work has been an enduring presence throughout my movie-going life.
For the last 30 years, not only have I sat and watched every single Tom Cruise film that has come out since 1986, I have done so in an actual, honest-to-goodness movie theater. That's a total of 33 silver screen experiences (34 if you count his Austin Powers in Goldmember cameo), including the latest, Jack Reacher: Never Go Back. Yeah, you might say I'm a fan.

Say what you will about Tom Cruise as a person but as an actor and producer, he is one of the strongest performers in Hollywood. For the last 19 years, he has been responsible for Paramount Pictures’ Mission: Impossible franchise and has turned it into a goldmine. The fifth installment, Rogue Nation, arrives tomorrow in a combo pack from Paramount Home Entertainment just as people worry about the granddaddy of espionage franchises, James Bond.
I was not alone in feeling disappointed by Spectre, a lax story, a waste of Monica Bellucci, and boring set pieces. In comparison, the three major action sequences in Rogue Nation are fresher, more exciting, and still works on repeated watching.
Cruise set out at the beginning to honor Bruce Gellar’s creation but also add new flavors by insisting someone different direct each movie. Brian DePalma set the stage and satisfied fans while John Wu had...

In 1994, Jan De Bont found himself in something of a quandary. The former Die Hard and Hunt For Red October cinematographer had just scored a major hit with Speed, an action disaster flick in which a bulked-up Keanu Reeves hopped aboard a bus with a bomb wired up to its speedometer. If the bus’s speed dropped below 50 miles per hour, the bomb would go off, killing all the passengers - including the likeably hapless Sandra Bullock.
It was Die Hard on a bus. It starred Dennis Hopper as its crazed villain. Speed was just the kind of high-concept fare audiences wanted to see in the summer of 1994, and they duly lined up to buy a ticket.

Keanu Reeves is finally back behind the wheel in a sequel to Speed - only this time, he's driving a lot slower.
A Reasonable Speed isn't quite as nerve-shredding as the original blockbuster, but it does have much more basic traffic instruction!
Set to the tune of 'Slow Ride', Reeves obeys stop signs, keeps both hands on the wheel and watches out for bystanders while chasing down a thief (Jimmy Kimmel).
Even though A Reasonable Speed is the first movie ever produced by the California Highway Patrol, it's still much more exciting than the actual Speed sequel Cruise Control.
When he's not obeying the laws of the road, Reeves is preparing to reprise his role as the stoic assassin in John Wick which begins filming this autumn.
Check out more of these parodies on Jimmy Kimmel Live!, airing weeknights on ABC in the Us.

Tom Cruise has come a very long way since his screen debut in Franc Zeffirelli’s Endless Love (1981). Thirty six movies and a whole lot of stardom later and he’s still the biggest movie star on the planet. He is perhaps, also the biggest film star in movie history. You’d be hard pushed to offer up any other actor that’s sustained that level of popularity and box office pull for that long. There is a good reason for this too. Cruise polarises opinion of course and there are those that would see his downfall, but in large part that’s due to all things that have little if nothing to do with Tom Cruise the filmmaker.
Being Tom Cruise must take a special kind of energy. So special in fact that he has sustained that level of dash for nigh on thirty years without letting up. And if Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation,...

Sean Penn: Honorary César goes Hollywood – again (photo: Sean Penn in '21 Grams') Sean Penn, 54, will receive the 2015 Honorary César (César d'Honneur), the French Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Crafts has announced. That means the French Academy's powers-that-be are once again trying to make the Prix César ceremony relevant to the American media. Their tactic is to hand out the career award to a widely known and relatively young – i.e., media friendly – Hollywood celebrity. (Scroll down for more such examples.) In the words of the French Academy, Honorary César 2015 recipient Sean Penn is a "living legend" and "a stand-alone icon in American cinema." It has also hailed the two-time Best Actor Oscar winner as a "mythical actor, a politically active personality and an exceptional director." Penn will be honored at the César Awards ceremony on Feb. 20, 2015. Sean Penn movies Sean Penn movies range from the teen comedy...

Re-he-he-heally?
After years of blank denials, simple "No"s, and dismissive remarks like, "That bus has left," Keanu Reeves may now be open to returning for another Speed film. In a chat with Nerdist, the actor reacts rather playfully to the idea of returning to the role of Jack Traven. It marks a tonal shift from the actor's previous "Not happening" stance. You may even recall that the actor famously opted out of the sequel, Speed: Cruise Control, leaving poor Sandra Bullock to sink on a mediocre ship with Jason Patric.
This time around, when the subject is brought up the actor, who is out promoting his new action film John Wick, has some fun with it:
"Oh my god, Speed 3: Redemption. Sure. Jack Traven kind of like, dusting it off."
This, of course, could all be a big joke to Reeves and we're all just getting excited over nothing,...

Summer movie season is a magic time of year when Hollywood traditionally rolls out its most appealing merchandise. It’s true that some summer movie seasons are better than others. This is our ranking of all the summer movie seasons since 1980 from worst to best.
On January 20th, 1975, Steven Spielberg and Universal Studios released Jaws. The movie landscape would be forever changed from that date. Jaws is widely credited as being the first blockbuster film because it was the first movie to make over $100 million (non-adjusted). The fact that the film had a meager $8 million budget meant that it was a huge cash cow for the studio and rocketed Spielberg to the the forefront of a new generation of filmmakers for a new era of movie mass-consumption. George Lucas and Spielberg followed up in 1977 with Star Wars, which became a sensational and very profitable hit. It helped to convince production...

Alamo Drafthouse feels the need for Cruise! They're celebrating Tom Cruise's extensive body of work with an event called "Cruise Control," a mystery marathon of five Tom Cruise films on 35mm. It's set to take place at the Alamo Ritz in Austin, TX next month. Even for those of us who are nowhere near Texas, this trailer for Cruise Control will have us all craving a Cruise marathon. Hit play and get ready to Run! Ok technically, Bonnie Tyler's "Holding Out For a Hero" is better associated with Footloose than it is a Tom Cruise movie, but Cruise does know a thing or two about playing the hero, and Footloose star Kevin Bacon starred alongside Tom Cruise in A Few Good Men so it's fine. Presented by Tough Guy Cinema, The Cruise Control mystery marathon will take place on July 27 at the Alamo Ritz in Austin, TX. Whether...

Screenwriter Graham Yost, now the showrunner of FX’s Justified, admits that the plot of Speed sounds ridiculous: A bomb on a bus will detonate if the bus travels below 50 mph. But when the movie was released June 10, 1994, a funny thing happened: It became a hit with moviegoers and critics alike. To quote EW’s grade-a review: “The film takes off from formula elements – it’s yet another variation on Die Hard – but it manipulates those elements so skillfully, with such a canny mixture of delirium and restraint, that I walked out of the picture with the rare sensation that...

The Shailene Woodley romantic drama clobbered the Tom Cruise sci-fi epic to secure the top spot.
Shailene Woodley's new romantic drama The Fault In Our Stars was the weekend's surprise winner, topping the box office and easily knocking Edge Of Tomorrow into yesterday's news.
The film follows Hazel (Woodley) and Augustus (Ansel Elgort) who meet and fall in love at a cancer support group. Augustus is in remission while Hazel's cancer is terminal. The two quickly develop a deep relationship and teach each other how to truly appreciate the life and world around them.
The film, based on a very popular young adult novel of the same name by John Green, managed to rake in $48.2 million, off of a relatively low $12 million budget, meaning that it made back its expenses four times over in three days of release.

One of the best things about the legendary Ron Burgundy and his ragtag team of newsmen was the group's unending quotability.
Think about it. How many times did you hear someone quip "don't act like you're not impressed," invite you to a pants party or order some "scotchy scotch scotch" after "Anchorman" came out? How about advising you to "stay classy"? A lot? That's what we thought.
And, like it or not, "Anchorman 2: The Legend Continues" clearly aims to pick up with the same zinger tradition and send its faithful viewers home with many more ridiculous lines on-hand.
This latest trailer for "Anchorman 2" is packed with a few notable examples already.

Cast your minds back to 2001 dear readers. Back to a time when Katie Holmes was the adorable dream girl next door. We've previously mentioned Jacob Cooney here on the site in connection with his film projects, but now he's released a new eBook called Zombie Fiesta: Volume I, which was created out of his hate for writer's block... and affection for the undead.
From the Press Release:
I like to write. I write for work, I write for fun, I write for myself and sometimes... if I’m lucky... I get paid to write for other people. So I guess you can say I spend most my days behind a computer, hopefully putting words on the page that will entertain the reader, the director, the producer or whoever else I’m hoping my work will reach.
Then there’s those days when writer’s block hits. You have nothing. The brain is dark, silent. The cursor stares back, blinking... winking at you from the white wash of the empty Word Doc on your computer screen.

If you’ve seen Drive, Nicolas Winding Refn‘s culty arthouse noir starring Ryan Gosling, you’ll know exactly what I mean when I say Nightcall immediately and effectively set the tone for the entire film. Music turned out to play an unexpectedly important role in the movie, but then again, what about that movie ended up as expected?
I loved Drive and could gush about it here all day, but if I did that I’d never get around to telling you the good news. Johnny Jewel, the mastermind behind Drive‘s brilliant soundtrack and part of the featured Chromatics and Desire, just released Symmetry: Themes for an Imaginary Film. At 2.5 hours long, it’s every bit as 80′s synth-driven as the real film score we’ve come to love, plus we’ve got it streaming free. Check it out below.

We've all seen it by now. The Kremlin collapses in smoke and flame, Tom Cruise flips up his hood and prepares to go underground, and enough scenery explodes to give Michael Bay night terrors. Thanks to its hugely popular trailer, a consensus has emerged that the fourth addition to the Mission: Impossible franchise will be the best. But should we choose to accept it?
Stretching an already thin concept over four films might seem a gamble too far for Cruise and his new Bff, producer Jj Abrams, but then Tom's no stranger to risky business. Will Mi:4 be an unlikely success? Or a box-office bomb so devastating the government will have to disavow its existence? Here's five reasons why this mission might really be impossible...

What's been happening this week in the world of robotics? Read on to find out how much more clever/terrifying/increasingly useful the cyber-hood has become.
Flinching dental bot
You'd rather have a trainee dentist practice on a dummy before taking the drill to your sensitive molars, wouldn't you? Yes, indeed. But a simple rubber dummy, no matter how anatomically correct, won't flinch or gulp like you do when you're strapped into the chair...and that makes for a non-ideal training situation.
Enter a robo-dummy from Showa University in Japan, the first commercial product of a decade of research. Showa Hanako 2 can sneeze, cough, gag, and clamp her jaws down when she's afraid of an approaching tool. She can recognize language, engage in basic conversation, and she even scores her students on how well they deal with procedures.

Does that make you feel better about a trip to the dentist?...

Automobiles of all shapes and sizes are invading the multiplex. Next week, you’ll thrill to cars that talk in Cars 2: Cruise Control. Then, you’ll be positively astounded by cars that talk and walk in Transformers 3: Back 2 The Hood. But how’s this for a hot idea: Cars that… well, are cars. That’s the can’t-miss concept behind Hot Wheels: The Movie, which is a joke you probably would have laughed about back in 1981, and also an actual movie which very powerful companies are currently desperate to make. According to Variety, Legendary Pictures is...

Top Ten Man/Woman Vs. Nature Films 10. Waterworld
If ever there was a film that exemplifies the whole Man vs Nature scenario, it.s Waterworld. Set in an apocalyptic future, after global warming has melted the polar ice caps and flooded civilization, the movie.s hero, The Mariner (Kevin Costner), is a man who has adapted by growing gills and a survivalist living on a boat on which he is growing a precious tomato plant. They’re cash-strapped and creatively bankrupt, but some bad sequels can be surprisingly entertaining if viewed the right way. Here’s our list of enjoyably bad sequels...
When Michael Caine came back from the Bahamas after the shoot of the dreadful Jaws IV: The Revenge, even he didn't gloss over the fact that it was an utter turkey. "I have never seen it, but by all accounts it is terrible," he admitted, with characteristic candour. "However, I have seen the house that it built, and it is terrific."
There seems to be an unwritten law, perhaps chiselled into a tablet somewhere, that dictates a franchise will inevitably sink into the mire as the numbers rack up. It's a law that applies to even the mightiest properties. The once revered Star Wars and Indiana Jones movies weren't immune to being dragged slowly into the abyss by ill-advised sequels. Only a few,...

He may be a small man pushing 50 with limits as an actor but he shines playing characters facing failure. He should do it more
Tom Cruise is 48. At that age, Gary Cooper had just made The Fountainhead, Bogart had done The Big Sleep and Montgomery Clift … well, he was dead. Meanwhile, Cruise is preparing a fourth Mission: Impossible picture and has just opened Knight and Day in the Us, an uneasy comedy thriller with Cameron Diaz as his partner. The opening was swamped by Toy Story 3 and the next bit of the Twilight saga, and its numbers are dismal. Cruise has now had three flops or under performers in a row – Lions for Lambs, Valkyrie and Knight and Day.
I know, he had a hit in the same period, Tropic Thunder, in which he was genuinely funny, but no one saw that as a Cruise vehicle. Valkyrie was a blatant vehicle,...

Depending on who you ask, you’ll get a different answer about their opinion on a certain very famous actor. Some love him for his charismatic approach to acting, others don’t love him for his less-than-normal lifestyle. The actor in question happens to be Tom Cruise, probably one of the most recognizable actors of the past 20 years. With his latest film Knight And Day getting released, we thought it would be fun to talk about some of his past features that we love and why we love them.

… and anyway, asks John Patterson, where's that 'biker gang invades Cambodia' plot I wanted?
Just as a Mars Bar eaten at 3pm will usually stay your appetite till supper time, The Losers should hold you until the arrival of whatever specimen of mega-budget action crap you're really looking forward to this summer. You may be hot for The A-Team, so let this be your B-Team. It's just good enough, as Joe Queenan pointed out a week or two ago [in the La Times] to justify bargain matinee prices, but if you ponied up full price, you'd feel cheated.
There's a lot of movies like this, a couple every summer, at least. Smokin' Aces was one, The Big Hit another. Fat cast of second-raters, TV dependables or up-and-comers; high calorific content, zero nutritional value, a ton of carbs, additives, food dyes, chemicals, antibiotics and preservatives; a plot vaguely reminiscent of other, better movies just gone or just due,...
