A not very well known jewel that deserves to be seen by all medieval/fantasy fans.
Darkbane28 June 2000
Reuniting Excalibur's King Arthur (Terry) as Sir Thomas Grey, with his queen (Lunghi) as his neighbor-turning love interest Lady Elizabeth, this series seemed perfectly created for those who love medieval period pieces. It was somewhat light on exact history, but did not outright thrash all realism like the Xena/Hurcules shows did. Ione Skye was beautiful as the tomboy only daughter of Lord Grey and the lads (though you had as much trouble keeping track of which ones were about as their father did) all gave splendid performances. The scenery was breathtaking and even though it played itself up as a drama, it's approach was refreshing compared to all the modern day shows airing.

Unfortunately, it was too 'geeky' for the average viewer, and perhaps not geeky enough (the mushiness might have turned off fan-boys) for the average fan of knights and wizards and such, so it faded into obscurity almost as quickly as it appeared.

I mourn its loss and wish it was available to watch somewhere in some form. It may not have been the best of writing, but it was novel in the way it approached telling the stories. Perhaps too novel for its time.

Before it's time...

This came out while I was in college. I remember recognizing the lead characters from the movie Excalibur. I recall it being well acted with believable and compelling characters. The scenery seemed authentic. And the stories revolved around family life and values but was set during the time of knights and kings

I watched it faithfully and then it just up and disappeared. Years later I recall seeing several or maybe a gazillion TV shows based around the same time period with similar, if not slightly more unbelievable and fantastic, myths. It's very refreshing to be reminded that as parents, and humans in general, though technologies have changed, our base feelings of love and compassion as well as the various stages and angst of emotional growth remains the same.

I very much wish they'd replay these, if not revive them. :)

Where can I get season 1 on DVD?
oharoon14 May 2007
Does anyone know where I can get this series on DVD? I had taped the this show on VHS years ago, and I was so disappointed when it went off the air. It was such a great funny show. Its nice to know other people remember it and appreciate it. I kind of thought I was the only one to remember this show, at least I know there is at least 8 of us out there. Its strange when really great shows like this go completely unnoticed and can get axed so quick. I really hope I can find someone to buy this show from.

Its kind of like Young Indiana Jones Chronicles that was so good but completely unappreciated by the masses. I really question the taste of Nielsen family homes.

Something like BBC Merlin
Sci-FiFreak7314 December 2009
I really liked CC show aired in our TV during early 90s.

Covington Cross is a show a little similar to current BBC Merlin.

It is a set or medieval stories with a modern point of view, of course without special effects and magic.

Costumes are perfect, show is full of intelligent humor and fun.

The most important message for watchers is: difficult but always honest decisions will bring happiness.

I regret its early cancellation.

I hope someone will remake this wonderful show one day.

Where can i get this show these days? I want to see it again after years.

I searched on Amazon but show is not available for order.

What a great show!

I wasn't lucky enough to have watched this show during it's first run, but I was lucky enough to have been given the entire series from someone, even the ones unaired in the US-

I watched all of them in a single day. I couldn't stop- the characters are great, the story lines are fun, they didn't take themselves too seriously, it's loads of fun- but then they did have serious moments as well. I've heard complants about that, but you know- I felt it worked.

They had some plot points dangling, which people also hadn't liked at the time, but it was apparent to me that they were planning on some great plot lines that was meant for the second season that never came.

It was a short lived show that deserved much more than it got.

This has to be one of the most underrated shows ever...
donald-campbell-121 May 2005
I'm so glad that I taped the series when it aired, It is always a good show to watch again, with the exception of the Robin of Sherwood series there has always been a shortage of good genre drama set in the middle ages. It had some genuinely funny moments with enough drama and fast paced action to keep you interested. I've often heard people refer to the show as the 90210 of the middle ages, i think that its a good description of the show but not in a derogates way of describing it but rather as a complement to the style of the show, if only it had gone as long as 90210.

Who ever decided to can this show made a big mistake...

A treasure
alix-711 March 2001
I loved this sitcom and was terribly sad that it was cancelled. I'd love to see it again; I imagine there is little chance of that. As a fan of Excalibur (1981) I was especially charmed by the casting. One of the more interesting shows to come along.

Covinginton Cross remains outstanding
hgrant30 December 2005
Warning: Spoilers
It was only 6 shows but it has held many of our hearts for years. I really feel it lives on in spirit because it has that universal spark that all great shows have. It touched our human spirit, made us laugh and cry. OK mostly laugh, but with it not at it. I think it could have been truly great if the characters could have continued to develop and flesh out over several seasons. It's only fault was that it didn't have enough time. The main premise was daring. A weekly drama set in the middle ages. I mean come on how original is that... I know that Gil Grant has been quoted as thinking Bonanza for the middle ages. But hey Bonanza had that same universal appeal because some basic human needs, wants, desires and, problems with the attainment of such, are so transcendent of time and place. Think Shakespere and the fact there are only 10 story lines the rest is just variations on those ten. There were some rough moments. Moments when the characters didn't have their "gel" down yet. But, you could tell they were having fun. They were professional. They were ready to bring this amazing show on. But, they didn't have the time or opportunity to work on not their craft but their bond. Time people. That is all that was lacking... Too bad.

Entertaining medieval series
Cath-106 November 1998
This is an entertaining series that relates the adventures and loves of the children of an English Lord during the Middle-Ages. This series is funny and quite interesting, though the medieval society it shows has more in common with Disneyland than with history.

this was such a good series when it was on but the next thing i knew it was off the air. it was several years back when this was on tv so it is hard to remember faces and names so if any one can please tell me whether cedric grey (played by beautiful glenn quinn- "angel"s doyle on the wb) was the youngest son or one of the two elder sons. this was a wonderful show and i hope it's few airings will be placed on video so i can continue to see them. they always take away the good ones.

Profoundly Silly
ttintagel28 April 2005
I watched this show with great anticipation, and was disappointed every week. I certainly expected better from such a good cast and premise. The dialog was cheesy, and the situations and stories were nothing like a medieval family would have ever found themselves in. I always got the impression that someone had just written a regular modern nighttime soap opera a la Dynasty and just dressed it up in 12th-century clothes. It was like one of those bad historical romance novels, where the author hasn't done any research, come to life. The production values were good, with beautiful costumes and sets. They must have had a pretty big budget.
