Was pleasantly surprised.

This is an action comedy horror movie from Hong Kong starring Fui-On Shing in the title role, which I think is a huge role for me since he has mostly be relegated to supporting roles other HK films. He plays a cop Tsu Hsiang who turns into a human monster after he is killed by triad members. He is oblivious to what really happen to him and finds that he needs to recharge himself from electricity in order to stay alive.

The film starts off pretty slow with some tasteless comedy; however, it picks up steam when the triad stuff happens and Tsu Hsiang turns into a monster and begins to sense supernatural-related things have gone wrong with him. The plot is pretty solid from then on as well.

There are some parts that will make you cringe when you watch, especially during parts when Tsu Hsiang tries to eat (best not to snack on food when you watch this film). The acting was pretty good, which a solid performance by Mr. Vampire actress Pauline Wong. For one of his few if not only title role, actor Fui-On also did a good job.

Plenty of action, drama and comedy. Not bad overall.

Blue Jean (Robo)cop.
BA_Harrison4 February 2021
There were times during The Blue Jean Monster where I was reminded of Paul Verhoeven's Robocop (1987): the plot revolves around a policeman, Tsu Hsiang (Fui-On Shing), who, while on the trail of a gang of ruthless armed criminals (similar to Robocop), is crushed by a ton of scrap metal dropped from a crane (which also happens to Robocop in that movie's climax). But that's not the end of Tsu: like Murphy, he is given a new lease of life and incredible powers, only in this case it's after a cat stands on his body and he is struck by lightning!

However, the film is far from a slavish rip-off (as if you hadn't guessed from the 'cat/lightning' plot turn): the opening ten minutes, for example, is Hong Kong comedy at it's most puerile, introducing us to Tsu's wacky ward Power Steering (Wai-Kit Tse), and a group of crazy youths at a burger restaurant, one of whom - pretty teen Gucci (Gloria Yip) - is pivotal to the narrative. This part is about as far removed from Verhoeven's dark social satire as possible, and is extremely hard going.

Then, in an abrupt change of pace and style, the film suddenly turns into a brutal crime story, as the gang of criminals carry out a bank job, blowing away staff and customers at random. In another scene that reminded me of Robocop, one of the robbers blows off a bank worker's hand with a shotgun (Murphy loses his hand in a similar fashion in Verhoeven's movie). Tipped off by Power Steering, Tsu arrives on the scene, and the criminals flee in a van, taking Gucci hostage; a car chase ensues, the bad guys crashing their van at a construction site. Gucci escapes, having grabbed the robber's loot, and Tsu arrives for a shoot-out with the baddies. It's as he's about to arrest the gang that he is crushed, another villain releasing the crane's heavy load.

The criminals leave Tsu for dead, and try to find Gucci. Meanwhile, the cat/lightning thing happens and the cop is brought back to life in time to rescue Gucci from a motorcyclist bad guy. The rest of the film alternates between really daft comedy, as Tsu hides the fact that he is dead from his heavily pregnant wife, and ballistic action as the cop and his family and friends encounter the bad guys, who are looking for their missing holdall full of cash.

The comedy is mostly low-brow and not very funny, but there is the occasional chuckle to be had: Tsu has to recharge himself using a modified flat-iron, which leads to an amusing scene where Power Steering and the cop are both electrocuted, Tsu's wife mistaking the incident as a homosexual act. The most bizarre gag occurs after Tsu's wife hires a sexy lady called Death-rays (played by busty Amy Yip) to take care of her husband's sexual needs: Tsu's appearance scares the woman, and she runs away; after chasing her, Tsu grabs Death-rays' amble bosom a little too firmly, squirting a stream of breast milk into his face. Huh?

The action is far better, and includes well-staged shootouts, vehicular stunts, impressive body burn stunts, and fights using a chainsaw and axes. I would have preferred it if the whole film had been in this vein - pure action and horror, and no humour. As it is, it's reasonably entertaining nonsense with a few genuinely good moments - worth a one-time watch for fans of Asian madness.

5.5/10, rounded up to 6 for Amy Yip.

Warning: Spoilers
Tsu Hsiang (Fui-On Shing) is a cop happy with his wife Chu (Siu-Fung Wong) who leaves her - while pregnant no less - to chase a tip given to him by a child named Power Steering (Wai-Kit Tse). The triads he's tailing find him and kill him on a construction site by dumping all sorts of building materials on him, except a magic cat sits on his chest and lightning comes down and turns Tsu into, well, The Blue Jean Monster, powered by electricity and out to kill his killers.

Fui-On Shing is often the second banana in movies, so who knew that he'd star in a film where he was repeatedly impaled and almost killed over and over again, only to come back by devouring electricity? This is one strange movie and I wouldn't have it any others way. Hopefully, Tsu can live long enough to see his son get born and keep his jeans tight so his intestines stop falling out.

An amazing masterpiece that deserves a U.S. DVD release
monstermonkeyhead1 April 2005
Warning: Spoilers
I'm shocked that at this point in time I'm the only person to write a comment about this incredible spectacle. First off, the title has nothing to do with anything. McDonalds employees must grab Big Macs like breasts to see who unknowingly had sex with a transvestite. I kid you not. A particularly violent bank robbery ends up with a cop being paralyzed, or perhaps dead, in a junkyard. Then a cat sits on his chest, which for some reason glows red around him. Then lightning knocks a telephone pole on him. The electricity brings him to life, so he's super strong and indestructible. He goes home to put Band-aids on his wounds from the bank robbery, but one wound is too big, so he uses his wife's Maxi-pad on it (since the package proclaims it is absorbent and prevents leakage). When he eats food, it comes out his wound. He puts a bunch of noodles from his wound into a bowl which his friend accidentally eats. The guy uses an iron to recharge himself with electricity. His friend catches him doing this, and tries to pull the iron away, and the 2 end up on the floor twitching. His wife walks in and thinks they're having homosexual sex. She the goes on a very politically incorrect rant, and tells them to get out. The movie just keeps on going like this. It's an amazing movie. The pregnant wife trying to turn her husband back into a heterosexual, hires a sexy hooker to have sex with him. The hubby not knowing this comes home and gets into bed with whom he thinks is his wife. He feels the hooker's breasts, but when she turns the light on, he's surprised, he explains, "Each of your breasts are as big as one of my pregnant wife's stomachs. I was seeing if I could feel my son kicking." A great piece of dialogue, worthy of my own humor then occurs. He says, "Who the hell are you?" She says, "I'm yours!" He says, "Your name is 'yours'". The hooker keeps coming on to him and attacking him to get in his pants. He's trying to be a good faithful husband, plus his male member doesn't work being dead and all, plus his gaping wounds... so he keeps trying to get away. He goes to push the hooker away, accidentally grabbing her breasts, and not knowing his own new super strength, he accidentally grabs them too hard so that streams of milk shoot out of them. At the end the wife gives birth to a baby during a shoot out. Another great piece of dialogue occurs. Wife says, "It's a boy!" Husband says, "Yes it is. He has a d***." And the baby pees in his face. Unbelievable. Of course there's so much more that my mind reels. If you ever have an opportunity to view this movie, do so at any cost. It is worth any price. Considering this was made in 1991, it is even more amazing how it is still light-years ahead of anything currently being made. And my God, will some U.S. distributer please give this a proper DVD release?

Category III Cinema: The Blue Jeans Monster.
Captain_Couth27 August 2005
The Blue Jeans Monster (1991) is a total farcical parody of the American film DEAD HEAT and several other films. Shing Fui-On gets chance to star in his own film. He plays a dedicated cop who's wife is about to give birth to a child. But fate deals him a bad hand as he's gunned down in the middle of a shoot out. Surprisingly, he doesn't "die" during the gun battle. Fui-On becomes a living corpse. He's that determined to see his wife give birth. Due to a gut wound, he has to keep his jeans tight so his entrails don't fall out. Since he's a monster, his strength and mood have become beast like. Can Fui-On keep it together until he sees his son? Will he get revenge on those he murdered him? To find out you'll have to track down a copy of THE BLUE JEANS MONSTER. Co-stars Amy Yip.

Highly recommended.

Total insanity, Hong Kong style!
dworldeater14 July 2021
Warning: Spoilers
Blue Jeans Monster could be best described in one word, insane. This is a action/horror/comedy that is Hong Kong's answer to Dead Heat with nods to Robocop as well. This has Shing Fui On in his only film as the lead character. He is best known for playing baddie in John Woo's The Killer. He is also seen a lot in supporting roles as cop and triad characters. Shing Fu On gets killed in a brutal shootout with robbers Robocop style, but he is somehow resurrected and with electricity he can charge himself up like a rechargeable battery. He seeks revenge against the gang of robbers and wants to see his baby born. My man "Big Round Head" ( his nickname in Hong Kong) kills it as the lead in his solo feature film. There is a good amount of disgusting gore, tasteless comedy and lots and lots of over the top HK styled action thrown together for one unusual and highly entertaining film. This is rated Catagory 3 for extreme violence and utter insanity. If you want to see something completely bonkers and over the top, Blue Jeans Monster most certainly fits the bill for that criteria.
