It’s been a stellar year of cinema and pop culture-themed books, and the texts (and Blu-rays) in this round-up all make fine gifts. One additional book that should be on your year-end list is Mark Frost’s Twin Peaks: The Final Dossier. It’s a satisfying companion to season three of Peaks, not to mention Frost’s own Secret History of Twin Peaks. So be sure to check out Nick Newman’s recent interview with the Peaks co-creator.
Live Cinema and Its Techniques by Francis Ford Coppola (Liveright)
The legendary Francis Ford Coppola has spoken of “live cinema” with regularity over the years, specifically with respect to 1981’s One From the Heart. That film, a box office flop now held in some regard, is an essential part of Live Cinema and Its Techniques, a fascinating new book authored by Coppola himself. The lessons from that experience, Coppola says,...

Twin Peaks Recap is a weekly column by Keith Uhlich covering David Lynch and Mark Frost's limited, 18-episode continuation of the Twin Peaks television series. It's James Hurley's (James Marshall) birthday and he wants a present. Not that he's demanding it—no, no. James is cool. He's always been cool. So in that affable way of his that can be equal parts endearing and insufferable, he asks his going-on-23-year-old coworker, Freddie Sykes (Jake Wardle)—a U.K. to U.S. transplant who, like James, is a security guard at the Great Northern Hotel—to explain why he's always wearing a green gardener's glove on his right hand. "Tell me the story," he says to Freddie. The young man obliges the birthday boy with a captivating tale ("you ain't gonna believe me anyway," he prefaces) of a man in the sky called The Fireman, who told him to buy the glove,...

So many familiar faces popped up in “Part 5” of Showtime’s Twin Peaks revival — and I think we can see all the far-flung storylines just starting to come together. But it was a minor footnote that finally got me bubbling over with excitement. As the credits rolled, a familiar name popped up in the crawl: angular young actor Eamon Farren is playing (drumroll) “Richard Horne.” That’s Horne, as in Horne’s Department Store, and “I’m Audrey Horne and I get what I want.” (And yes I stood up from my couch and screamed out “He’s a Horne!

After “Twin Peaks” concluded, people wanted answers. Resolution, closure, something — for those not infuriated by that wide-open ending, the show’s faithful had endless questions about Coop, the Black Lodge, Audrey Horne, and everyone else. What they got instead was “Fire Walk with Me,” a 135-minute prequel even less concerned with resolution and closure than the cliffhanging finale. They should have known better.
The film premiered at Cannes in 1992, just a little more than a year after David Lynch and Mark Frost’s cult phenomenon was unceremoniously canceled following its meandering second season. To say it wasn’t warmly received would be understatement: “Fire Walk with Me” is one of many worthy films that have been booed mercilessly at the vaunted festival, and Quentin Tarantino’s response typified the overall reaction: “After I saw ‘Twin Peaks: Fire Walk with Me’ at Cannes, David Lynch had disappeared so far up his...

About twenty minutes ago I stepped onto 32nd St. between Madison and 5th Ave. for all 15 seconds, in which time I caught sight of an Mta bus bearing something I once never thought I’d see: an advertisement for new episodes of Twin Peaks. (It was this poster in a scaled-down form.) Then I return indoors and, voila, the latest teaser. As if I weren’t already excited enough, the universe is now sending a signal of some kind.
You’re only getting exterior shots herein, though fans will no doubt dig through them for clues. Why is the Palmer home being photographed so ominously? (Answers other than “this is a David Lynch production” need only apply.) Why do we return to Fire Walk with Me‘s Fat Trout Trailer Park? Who might be playing inside the roadhouse? And that’s about it, save for some notice that the cars...

You can tell Bob Odenkirk is the perfect loser in Girlfriend's Day because he plays a professional greeting card writer. The irony of such a job for such a character has been seen before in The Lonely Guy, Missing Pieces, Mr. Deeds, (500) Days of Summer and, with a bit of variation, Her. In this new movie, a Netflix original, the main premise is that he used to be the best at it and now must reign again through a contest related to the titular new holiday. Odenkirk seems perfect for the role, as it's almost like he's playing his TV character Saul Goodman from Breaking Bad and now Better Call Saul as a writer instead of a lawyer. He co-wrote the script with his old Mr. Show collaborator Eric Hoffman...

Jessica Biel and Jake Gyllenhaal star in the long-shelved comedy, Accidental Love. Ryan finds out whether it was worth the 7-year wait...
In the beginning there was David O Russell's Nailed, a political comedy which began filming in 2008 and, after a disastrous string of financing problems, seemingly died two years later. Deciding to cut his losses, a frustrated Russell abandoned the project in 2010 and moved onto Oscar glory with The Fighter, Silver Linings Playbook and American Hustle.
But like Rasputin, Nailed has lingered on without Russell's involvement. Missing pieces have been shot and put in place, and the finished film - now called Accidental Love - is credited to one Stephen Greene, an Alan Smithee-like pseudonym. The result is a fitfully amusing farce that can't begin to hide the scars of its troubled production.

The sixth entry in an on-going series of audiovisual essays by Cristina Álvarez López and Adrian Martin.***25 May 1991 - Lynch. I saw, a bit by chance, with S.P., an episode of Twin Peaks on TV. I had already seen one and been intrigued (in a good way). Same feeling yesterday. Same pleasure to let myself into the “chain” of the film, once I am (vaguely) related to the plot and once I am in the passage, always stimulating, from one scene (one shot) to another. Ah! Here’s some cinema, one notices. It constantly articulates something. —Serge Daney, The Exercise Was Beneficial, fragment translated by Laurent KretschmarMany things can be said in general about the entire Twin Peaks phenomenon masterminded by David Lynch and Mark Frost; its pertinent ‘macro’ contexts are many. These contexts include: the convoluted narrative and the crazy characters; the inauguration of a ‘dead girl’ genre...

The final episode of Twin Peaks aired on June 10, 1991 — and the devastating (and let’s just say it: wholly disappointing) cliffhanger left us with far too many questions. (And far too few of those questions were answered by the 1992 prequel movie Fire Walk With Me).
Enter Showtime.
As reported early Monday, the cable network has commissioned a nine-episode present-day continuation of David Lynch and Mark Frost’s classic ABC drama that will attempt to bring the series to a satisfying conclusion. We’re assuming that means at least some of Season 2’s innumerable loose threads will be tied up.

Following years of frustration that left Twin Peaks fans feeling like headbutting a mirror much like evil Dale Cooper in the TV show's final scene, the improbable dream has finally materialised. 90 minutes of deleted and extended scenes shot by David Lynch for his misunderstood masterpiece Fire Walk With Me, a cinematic prequel to the series, have finally been released as part of the 'Entire Mystery' box set. But were they worth waiting for?
The answer is a resounding yes. They are, excuse me, a Damn fine addition to the world of Twin Peaks. I can't tell you how many deleted scenes I've seen in my life, but these are some of the best.
David Lynch has personally assembled the footage as a standalone entity rather than cutting it back into the already lengthy movie, miraculously ensuring that the scenes retain a flow and rhythm across the 90 minutes, despite their disjointed nature.

“Where Pies Go When They Die”
By Raymond Benson
Unless you’re too young to remember it, you’ll recall that Twin Peaks was a short-lived phenomenon on television in the year 1990. The frenzy lasted into 1991 but sadly fizzled out quickly due to the network’s (ABC) futzing around with time slots, days-of-the-week for airing, and unexplained hiatuses. What began as the number one show on television for several months somehow derailed during its underrated second season and lost its viewership. The program was cancelled, leaving the fans of the series with an unresolved cliffhanger that haunts us to this day.
David Lynch and Mark Frost were the men behind Twin Peaks. At the time, in the late 80s, Lynch was just coming off the success of his 1986 feature film, Blue Velvet, when he teamed up with TV veteran Frost to create a PG-rated show that explored many of the...

Some Spoilers For ‘Twin Peaks’ & ‘Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me’ Contained
Everyone has their white whale; that elusive treasure or goal that they fetishise and dare to find and covet. For some it was the lost footage from Fritz Lang’s Metropolis. For others it was the mythical buried reels of The Wicker Man, which rather ludicrously had been rumoured for years to be buried in the concrete foundations of an English motorway. For me it was always the deleted scenes of David Lynch’s much maligned Twin Peaks prequel Fire Walk with Me. Even in a pre-internet, pre-dvd extras age, I obsessed over this rumoured material and what possible insights it may offer into Lynch’s labyrinthian mystery. And now, thanks to the Twin Peaks: The Entire Mystery Blu-ray set, they are finally here. So how do they stack up? What do they tell us?...

David Lynch unveiled nearly 90 minutes of deleted and extended scenes to his 1992 film Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me at a Los Angeles theater last night. It was intense and weird. At BuzzFeed, you can read my latest feature, "Twin Peaks: The Missing Pieces Makes You See Fire Walk With Me In A Different Way," in which I look at the so-called Missing Pieces from Twin Peaks — the deleted scenes from David Lynch's Fire Walk with Me — unveiled by Lynch last night at the world premiere in Los Angeles. Warning: The following contains information about the identity of Laura Palmer’s killer. If, by some chance, you are reading this and haven’t finished the more than two decades-old series, stop reading before you are spoiled. Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me, David Lynch’s follow-up prequel to cult classic television series Twin Peaks, has always been an odd beast.

Many David Lynch fans were, understandably, bummed when he put the kibosh on any hopes for a new season of "Twin Peaks." But instead, he is offering acolytes of his early-90s cult series an even greater gift: a new Blu-Ray box set, with 90 minutes of never-before-seen footage from the prequel film "Fire Walk with Me." (Entertainment Weekly has a teaser for the new footage. Watch below.) Back in 2011, fans petitioned for Lynch to pull these scenes out of the vault and into the light -- and he has done so accordingly, albeit three years later. Dubbed "Twin Peaks: The Entire Mystery and the Missing Pieces," the set hits shelves July 29, and features a new transfer of the two seasons. To get you ramped up, a new Tumblr, featuring gorgeously haunting images and GIFs from the series and film, promises more mystery to come. The owls are not what they seem,...

Los Angeles – Jack White already had two dates booked at La’s iconic venue The Wiltern for the end of May when he suddenly added a date at the Mayan Theater for April 30.
Hitting the stage in a jet black long-sleeve shirt and black jeans to match, White brought out a group of six females as his new backing band: a wild-looking drummer, a flapper-esque violinist, a stand-up bassist (who was pregnant), a Dutch slide guitarist, a ravishing backup singer who doubled as tambourine master, and finally a cute young woman on keyboards.
White wasted no time diving right into material from his brand-new debut solo effort, Blunderbuss, which is expected to take Billboard’s #1 spot when the charts are revealed tomorrow. Our first taste was the album’s opening track, “Missing Pieces,” which the crowd had clearly already memorized as they sang along to every word.

Performing solo just never seemed to be Jack White's thing. In his years leading the White Stripes before they disbanded in 2011, you always got the sense that they were a duo more for appearance's sake - just because he liked it that way - than a real creative partnership. (Sorry, Meg.) Even when he did side projects, he chose to work in other bands (the Raconteurs, the Dead Weather) and produce other artists (from Loretta Lynn to Wanda Jackson). With Blunderbuss, though, White finally earns his solo stripes. The album doesn't represent a radical departure - from thumping garage...

In "Missing Pieces," the writers of Law & Order: Svu resist telling the standard kidnapping story and present us with a case in which no crime has really taken place.
Granted Nate's parents filed a false police report and sent the detectives on a wild goose chase, but they are both innocent when it comes to the death of their young son. The story really played with our expectations of what a Svu episode is supposed to be, and I found the change quite refreshing.
The plot did feel Susan Smith/Casey Anthony-ish, but this episode turned out to be very different from those real life cases.
I was pleased that Amaro seemed to be the focal point of this investigation. I've enjoyed watching his character and was far from disappointed by his performance this week. I find Danny Pino to be so convincing in his role as both a dedicated detective and father.
Granted Nate's parents filed a false police report and sent the detectives on a wild goose chase, but they are both innocent when it comes to the death of their young son. The story really played with our expectations of what a Svu episode is supposed to be, and I found the change quite refreshing.
