Vain, but I had to do it...
Raconteur19 February 2007
This was a pretty fun little movie, but mostly I just wanted to point out the mis-credit.

I was hired by a friend of mine (at the time) named Steve Allen, to do some "guitar pyrotechnics" for Metal Louie in the bar scene (pretty funny stuff). I did the gig, and then years later see on IMDb that my work gets credited to Steve Allen, who wasn't even a guitar player!!! I have no way of changing the credit, but at least I can make a statement here, and put it on my own IMDb page and resume.

Sorry for vanity post, but I was pretty proud of that little bit of work, especially in 1991 when that sort of playing was at its height.

Cheers, Christopher Burns

Revenge in the desert ............
merklekranz16 January 2011
This straightforward revenge flick is way above average. As a child, C.Thomas Howell witnessed the murder of his parents. Years later returning to the small town where they were killed, Howell proceeds to arrange fatal "accidents" for those involved. R.Lee Ermey is the county sheriff, who was in on the murders, along with several other locals. As Howell goes about eliminating the guilty parties complications ensue, and it turns out the woman who takes a romantic interest in Howell, has a father who was one of the killers. The story and character development are good, with competent acting by all concerned. Recommended of it's type. - MERK

C.Thomas Howell stars as a nameless man who returns to the small town where his hippie parents were killed ten years later, however this time he's armed and he's out for revenge in this solid low budget actioner which casts Howell in a good role as the vigilante kid. Some excellent editing and some entertaining fightscenes highlight the movie.

A favorite cult classic
b061526 January 2001
This has become one of my favorite movies. This is partly because I am the biggest C. Thomas Howell fan out there. The plot: young man comes back to get revenge on the people who killed his parents when he was still a kid. The scene of their death is so sad. This movie makes you laugh, cry, and grab the edge of your seat. The inside joke with the dog is really cute. The romance between the Kid and the leading lady (Sarah Trigger-terrific job) is so sweet. Even though I don't believe in getting revenge, especially when it has to do with murder, I felt very sorry the main character. It shows a great sign of talent a viewer feels compasion for a character whether or not that person agrees with the action he/she takes in the movie. Rent it, buy it, see it. You won't be sorry.

Hey do you believe in the bogeyman?
hitchcockthelegend20 September 2018
Kid is directed by John Mark Robinson and written by Leslie Bohem. It stars C. Thomas Howell, Sarah Trigger, Brian Austin Green, R. Lee Ermey and Dale Dye. Music is by Tim Truman and cinematography by Robert D. Yeoman.

Come 1990 C. Thomas Howell had already showed himself to be flexible in his acting wiles, here he fronts up for some straight moody seriousness as The Kid of the title. The Kid is all about revenge, returning to his home town of his youth to enact retribution on those who murdered is mother and father.

It has strong resemblance to a whole host of previous movies that operate along the same formula straight, only difference is is that's it's pitched more to a young adult audience. Some of the dialogue is crass speak, the musical score in keeping with the decade this had just left behind, and away from Howell, Ermey and Dye (the latter two doing their rough and tough acts), the acting is cringe inducing, however, this is no dead loss.

A revenge movie is easy to buy into if you can get on board with the protagonist/antagonist, and Howell manages to do this. Kid is a person of few words, instead choosing to say more by brooding and using serio visual ticks, his intensity in the role rewarding. It's quite refreshing in light of Ermey and Dye's barnstorming approach to one dimensional villainy.

The ending somewhat peters out, sadly not daring to go the whole mile for complete devine retributional closure, which marks this out as not being a must see revenge pic. Yet it has enough strengths for the undemanding viewer, I mean if only for death by tennis ball this should be marked above average.

A decent revenge movie very much of its time that's worth a look. 6.5/10

Don't mess with the kid, in a routine tale of revenge.
videorama-759-85939129 November 2013
Trouble walks into town, off a bus in this simple, sort of plain revenge, flick. Ponyboy Howell is in town to settle some old scores, well take out a score of men who killed his parents. Howell shot one, and ended up in jail for his troubles. Now out, he will finish the job, well some nasty obstacles come into play, one of them a corrupt sheriff (R La Ermey). He's befriended by a hot Sarah Trigger and her brother, (yes Trigger pash a little bit-well they do spend an intimate moment. But unbeknown to Howell, their father is one of the baddies. Trigger and bro never knew about their father's murderous and corrupt activities. We see some inventive ways of murder used, Howell, one smart puppy. The acting not really anything to write home about, good performances are random here, Howell probably one of the best. The better titled Kid is really just a paint by numbers, formula, revenge flick. If a revenge or C Thomas fan, this is your thing, but if it isn't you're probably better seeking out other pics.

Tom Does Clint
bkoganbing10 February 2008
Kid starring C. Thomas Howell is a High Plains Drifter modern knockoff and while it will never stand comparison to the Clint Eastwood classic it's not a bad film on its own.

We never know what Howell's real name is, but he's come to a sleepy, modern western town complete with the same long coat that Clint Eastwood wears and starts targeting a few of the town's citizens for demise. Trust me however, Howell's got a very good reason for wanting this. The only problem is with the last guy on his list, Dale Dye. He's away from town when Howell first arrives and the two people who befriend him are his children, Sarah Trigger and Brian Austin Green in his pre-90210 days. It doesn't detract from his main mission.

The ending is rather lame, it doesn't really holdup given the character motivation that is established for Howell. Still Kid is not a bad film and the western scenery is just fine.

"Kid" starring C Thomas Howell
CaptainAmerica1022 March 2005
"Kid" is one of those movies where you're not going to be mesmerized by the acting or script; instead, it pulls you in with its scenery of beautiful Arizona, the music which is something out of a "80'S Hair Metal" CD, and by the story itself. Haven't we all wondered just a little about growing up with no family...always having to rely on no one but yourself? An interesting thought to me anyways. Each time I watch it I go back in time to a time when my family was still together and I took my teen-age freedom for granted. Although we never learn what C Thomas Howell's actual name is, we don't need to. Plenty of great fight sequences and around-the-corner suspense make this movie a must-own for anyone who didn't know the best years of their life would be the 80's until they were 30.

Laughable, but Brian Austin Green is hilarious. (spoilers)
vertigo_1426 March 2005
I was a bit duped by many of the positive comments for this film, finding it instead to be quite laughable. Not because of the story, but the execution.

This is the story of a young mysterious man who one day arrives in this desolate town in the middle of nowhere. The kind where teenagers fear to roam in horror movies because of all of the wackos kind of isolation. But, while everyone thinks he mistakenly got off the bus through town, this guy came with a purpose: to avenge the men who brutally murdered his hippie parents when he was a kid. The guys don't know who he is or what he's there for, but they're about to find out.

Of course, the young man doesn't come without his share of trouble, namely from a creepy town sheriff and his hoodlum (but idiot) sons who have a bit of fun terrorizing the residents and keeping everyone on a sort of lock-down (because when you're the law, who's going to challenge you?). Luckily, the young man befriends a young woman and her cool "metal god" teenage brother, the only people that seem willing to help him out (as much as they can).

The story is pretty decent, but the whole thing just comes off as laughable. While there are some decent action sequences (mostly street and bar fighting between "The Kid" (Howell) and the Sheriff's instigator sons), there are some major detractors for me. First, C. Thomas Howell looks like he's almost ready to bust out laughing every time we see him. His character is supposed to be pretty serious throughout the whole film, and so monotoned as well (he might've smiled once the entire time). I couldn't help but wonder how many outtakes there were for each scene, spoiled by agonizing laughter on Howell's part. (I would've if I were him). The second is some very lame dialog, especially in this ten minute exchange between Howell and Trigger (who plays the young woman that helps him out). Third, is the ridiculous reason for revenge that was never fully developed -- a bunch of rednecks just up and decide to kill a hippie family (warning that they don't want some hippie commune developing in town) who looked to be out in the middle of nowhere. Seems like a pretty flimsy reason (or at least, not a well developed one) for the kind of murder the proceeds.

But, in spite of all that, there was one thing that made me stick with the film from beginning to end -- Brian Austin Green as the funky little teenage brother who also helps Howell. The self-proclaimed "metal god" with a great sense of humor who adds some much needed comic relief (look at the part where he introduces his band) to a rather mundane atmosphere. He was excellent! So all in all, I'd say it's probably worth trying out. The faults don't entirely outweigh the good. You might even find yourself another follower of the cult classic.

i LOVE this movie
Miss K6 May 1999
ok, i know this is no Citizen Kane or Casablanca. But i love it anyway.

It's the story of this guy coming back to his hometown for revenge, after his parents were killed there under his own eyes a couple of decades ago. He hunts down all the culprits and kills them. There's romance, suspense and action which makes this quite a complete movie.

I first saw this movie when i was 10, and since then it has become one of my cult favorites.... The acting is bad, the plot is ok, but what really steals the show for me is the dialogue : pure genius (in a it's so bad it's good kinda way)! Especially when they talk about the book ' The Hobbit'...that scene has me roaring in laughter every time i see it, it's so unintentionnally funny !! There are so many pieces of dialogue and situations that sticks in your mind for you know not what reasons ... Like the scene with the Sheriff getting his head blown away by 'accident'... EXCELLENT !! And the music is great too !

If you like revenge and cool dialogue, rent/buy this movie.

Engrossing B-movie
BBmanDawn8 July 2002
A neo-Western with the charismatic C. Thomas Howell surpassing his other notable performances as Ponyboy in The Outsiders and the lawyer/volleyball stud in Side Out. Kid will always have a spot on my video shelf as I caught it back in the day while I was still in the early years of High School and I loved it then and love it now. It even has David Silver as an outdated Metalhead who speaks in 80s cliches, and the gorgeous older sister who makes washing a horse look like the most appetizing chore this side of the Mississippi. Topping off the cast is the drill Sergeant from Full Metal Jacket and Dale Dye, both adding credibility to what could have been an otherwise cheap Cinemax snooze-fest. A lean, well-paced and sometimes laughable "flick" that could have benefited from a more intense climax, but works very well within its own means.

My fav revenge movie
interrogatemc22 December 2003
Perhaps a bit cheesy at times, but I do believe it's the best revenge movie I've seen. I've only had the chance to see it once and would like to see it again, to possibly reaffirm my high opinion of the flick, but it's a hard one to come by.

One of the best films about revenge
chamenandrew17 November 2014
I first learned about this movie through its trailer on another VHS where its known as Back For Revenge which in my eyes is a better name for this movie. I really enjoyed this film and it made me a fan of C Thomas Howell. It was also interesting to see a young Brian Austin Green in a supporting role. If this movie was set in the wild west it still would be an awesome movie.I'll definitely recommend this film for anyone who enjoys revenge movies or C Thomas Howell. Not only did this film have great action it also had great drama added to the mix is an excellent cast with a terrific script and awesome directing. They don't make them like this anymore and probably never will.So watch this movie whenever you can. Thanks for reading this review.

Howell's best movie!!
cobra_0113 April 2003
Okay. I'm a C. Thomas Howell fan. Always have been. From his newer B movies (red team, Avalanche) to his old movies. (The Outsiders, Side Out) And this movie is by far the best of the bunch. It starts out with an eeriy feel to it as The Kid steps off the bus in the center of the desert like town. Its a great movie though some of the acting is bad (the brothers) its a movie that will always be on my shelf and will be in my vcr alot as well. 7/10

An Honest Review
generationofswine12 January 2020
When I was 10, this had just come out, probably straight to video and it was honestly sitting there on the shelves screaming at me from the top of it's lungs.

I mean, pretty blond, dude on a duster with a shotgun... my ten-year-old mind couldn't get past that and the title "Kid."

You put it all together, in a child that absolutely loved "Young Guns" and "Red Dawn" and.... it had to be magic right?

But it was one of the few movies that my dad (who despised censorship no matter how old the person you were censoring was) vetoed. And he gave it the worst possible veto he could give it. He looked down, so he could see my big, pleading, blue ten-year-old eyes and rested his had on my shoulder and said: "No, that's gonna suck."

And when I finally got around to watching it, I remembered my father's words, and my childlike associations with far better films, and I sat down to watch it and....

.... boy was my father right. It was so very bad, so unforgivably bad, so absolutely horrible that you kind of had to love it on principal.

Not the so bad it's good kind of film, but the train wreck that is still entertaining because it's a train wreck. It was carnage candy... but it was carnage candy that I just couldn't look away from.

It is FAR from the worst movie ever made, but it is certainly in that bad movie genre and, honestly, it is an entertaining watch nonetheless. Somehow, the bad movie over came everything and became... watchable and enjoyable.

I'm not sure how, but there you have it. It's a ridiculous revenge movie that is worth watching on a rainy day.

A Great Rare Film
horserocking29 July 2021
I love rare and obscure films. I was looking for rare and obscure films to watch a few days ago and came across a video titled "Kid 1990 very rare" The very rare sold me and i had to check it out. This movie is amazing. I like it more than I thought I would. C. Thomas Howell is an amazing actor, his performance in this movie is great. The plot is about a young man who comes back to a very small town to get revenge on the men that killed his parents when he was a little kid. If your a fan of revenge movies, your going to love this film. All of the performances, and characters were great. The soundtrack was killer especially the song Dance-Swing by Young Gunns (aka Wildside) If your a fan of revenge, action, thriller, b movies or rare and obscure movies I can't recommend Kid enough.

A subtle revenge film
GOWBTW-5STARreviewer9 February 2022
Looking for revenge isn't easy. Most people who get revenge tend to be sloppy. C. Thomas Howell known for being in "The Outsiders" and other hit films played the title character, "Kid".

It's about a young man who returns to his hometown years later after his hippie parents were murdered by the locals. One by one, the lone "kid" tracks down the ones responsible for his parents' death. They weren't killed in the same manner. At first, the "kid's" presence in the town was menacing. Especially for the sheriff(R. Lee Ermey) and his sons. He tried to run the "kid" out of town, but a couple of the locals didn't like him or his sons, and several others. Since he and his friends were hunting buddies, they were the responsible one for the "kid's" parents murder. And the daughter and brother(Brian Austin Greene) would later know what kind of a man their father was.

This movie was subtle in matter. A lot of violence and action. And small amount of intimacy. Tame to say the least.

2 out of 5 stars.

Found this lil gem maybe a year or 2 after it came out. Never heard of it except seeing it on the VHS shelves. I remember being very intrigued within the first 5 minutes. And was thoroughly entertained throughout. Beautiful score, Howell holds the screen well. Good lead. R. Lee ermey rocks as usual.

More or less the ultimate B-movie
fredrikgunerius6 August 2023
This modern western toys with classic genre conventions and gives them a new and quite attractive 1990s wrapping in which heavy metal aficionados are pitted as part of the solution rather than the problem (for once). The bad guys are middle-aged, trigger-happy chauvinists, and our good guy - our sexy, steaming, too-cool-for-school good guy - is like a 20-year-old Blondie. He doesn't talk unless he has to and he doesn't kill unless he's compelled to, but boy do we get that he is. We also get why the delicate Sarah Trigger wants him to pay her nightly visits. Kid is more or less the ultimate B-movie. It uses all of its stereotypical ingredients to create a timeless, suspenseful guilty pleasure - which is also a tribute to 1990 fashion, by the way. Arguably C. Thomas Howell's best ever performance.

Old-hat Western revenge movie
lor_16 June 2023
My review was written in April 1991 after watching the movie on Live video cassette.

C. Thomas Howell makes the transition from teen heartthrob to screen tough guy with okay results in "Kid", a routine vengeance melodrama that is being released directly to the video market Stateside.

Lesle Bohem's well-designed but highly derivative script recalls elements of Eastwood Westerns as well as John Sturges' "Bad Day at Black Rock".

Howell breezes into the small town of White Brush in a mythic cloud of dust. As flashbacks reveal, he returned to avenge his parents' murder by so-called respectable townsfolk.

Howell is a convincing antihero who systematically kills the villains in creative ways. He falls in love with young dreamboat Sarah Trigger whose father predictably turns out to be one of the murderers.

Blessed with a good cast, including reliable R. Lee Ermey as a particularly hissble sheriff, film sufers from an unconvincing finale. Also annoying is Tim Truman's repetitive music that fails in its attempt to conjure up Ennio Morricone's grandiose Western scores.
