Roger Corman, the legendary B-movie filmmaker who directed, produced, and starred in upwards of 500 films over the course of a staggering eight decade-spanning career, has died. He passed away aged 98 this past Thursday at his home in Santa Monica, California.
In a statement posted on Roger’s Instagram to announce his passing, Corman’s wife Julie and daughters Mary and Catherine shared the following: “It is with profound sadness, and boundless gratitude for his extraordinary life, that we remember our beloved husband and father, Roger Corman. He passed away on May 9th, at home in Santa Monica, California, surrounded by his family. He is survived by his wife Julie and his daughters Catherine and Mary. He was generous, open-hearted and kind to all those who knew him. A devoted and selfless father, he was deeply loved by his daughters. His films were revolutionary and iconoclastic, and captured the spirit of an age.

Roger Corman, the pioneering producer and director, known affectionately as “the king of B movies,” passed away on May 9 at his home in Santa Monica, California. Corman had as much influence over modern Hollywood as Steven Spielberg or Martin Scorsese. And for good reason: Without him there likely wouldn’t even have been a Spielberg or Scorsese.
This maker of hundreds of low-budget horror, sci-fi, and exploitation films is to this day remembered by many, and rather unfairly, as a B-movie hack, but Corman’s aesthetic sensibilities have come to dominate the franchises we now call tent poles, and his protégés number among the most influential people in cinema. And he enjoyed every minute of it.
Corman came off as very humble, resembling no one so much as Mr. Rogers. He laughed at himself and his experiences frequently. Many of the movies that he made were ridiculous but they were knowingly so.

Roger Corman's Masque Of The Red Death
Roger Corman, who directed 55 films and produced over 450, as well as fitting in an acting career, has died a month after his 98th birthday. Tributes poured in from those he worked with, who remembered him for his energy, his generosity, and his enormous influence in shaping cinema as we know it today.
Starting out in the early 1950s as a director and producer of B-movies, Corman quickly made a name for himself with his dynamic visual ideas and his ability to overcome all sorts of challenges to bring a project to fruition. Even early works like She Gods Of Shark Reef and A Bucket Of Blood show hints of the flair that would make his name, and by 1961's The Pit And The Pendulum, he had developed a style which enabled him to make an indelible impression even when working with very simple sets and props.

Roger Corman, a pioneering producer, actor, and King of B Movies, passed away at 98. Few people in the entertainment industry leave a mark as lasting and essential as Mr. Corman’s. With 493 producer credits, Roger Corman championed the B movie tier, giving horror fanatics, science-fiction enthusiasts, and action addicts reasons to holler at screens while pumping their fists. With a sharp eye for talent, Corman discovered industry heavyweights like Martin Scorsese, Robert De Niro, Jack Nicholson, and more. Mr. Corman died at his home in Santa Monica, California, on May 9, while surrounded by family.

Lee Grant, the Oscar-winning actress (“Shampoo”) says she decided after her win to try to direct since good roles for older women were limited. It turns out that was about the halfway point of her 98 year (so far) life. What followed was a narrative feature (“Tell Me a Riddle”) and several documentaries, including “Down and Out in America,” which won an Oscar.
When we last ran our list of the oldest living feature film directors in late 2022, where Grant stood was a mystery. Since her breakout in William Wyler’s “The Detective Story” (1951), her first nomination, her year of birth was unclear. But recently she has clarified that that she was born in 1925. That makes her, to the best of our knowledge, older than any of her peers.

Chris Alexander is nervous. Although he’s known filmmaking legend Roger Corman for 20 years, having interviewed him and engaged with him on a personal level numerous times over two decades, he’s never met the man in person.
“It’s the first time I’m actually going to be sitting down with this man,” Alexander says as we await Corman’s arrival. “I mean, [he’s] my hero.”
The occasion of this momentous meeting is a signing event at iconic Los Angeles horror bookstore Dark Delicacies for Alexander’s new book, Corman/Poe: Interviews and Essays Exploring the Making of Roger Corman’s Edgar Allan Poe Films, 1960-1964, which is exactly what the title describes: a collection of analytical essays about the entire cycle of Corman’s films based on the works of Edgar Allan Poe, interspersed with interviews about each title with the producer/director.

A murder they didn’t commit and were eventually exonerated of in 2009. This being a horror film, a posthumous pardon is not nearly enough to even the score.

Whoa! CineSavant reviewed a different release of this movie just four months ago. Roger Corman’s 7th Poe/Gothic adaptation is probably his best, thanks to a Beaumont/Campbell screenplay that fully engages with Edgar A.’s morbid agenda. It’s not really kiddie fare, what with the unrelenting emphasis on cruel torture, perverse values and Godless nihilism. Vincent Price’s Prince Prospero has a real philosophy behind his twisted obsessions. Higher English production values and the riveting cinematography of Nicolas Roeg push this one into genuine classic status. The 2018 restoration was aided by Trailers from Hell’s Joe Dante and Jon Davison — the bits missing from censored versions have all been reinstated — saved by film collectors.

Following 2009’s “The Pit and the Pendulum” was an interesting task for the then rookie director Sohn Young-sung. After all, his morbid look at monomania garnered mixed reviews, with some believing its ambitious tales-within-tales approach was consummately dispatched, whilst others felt that the relatively complex narrative drags itself towards a fantasy-filled, incongruous conclusion. Thus, the pressure was firmly off for Sohn as he headed towards his sophomore effort, as there was certainly no debut masterpiece that needed topping, but nevertheless a little rather frank expectation that the promising filmmaker would deliver a more consistent end product. Fortunately, “The Client” provided exactly that, with its gripping courtroom drama an intriguingly dark look at both workplace politics and marital grievances. Dominating the box office throughout its run (and despite its late-September release becoming the 10th highest grossing film in South-Korea during 2011), its a suspense-thriller that is unlikely to offer any clear originality,...

A scene from Gordon's cult hit Re-Animator
The horror community was in mourning today following news of the death of writer and director Stuart Gordon, who was much loved both for his work and as a person. He passed away last night at the age of 72, from unspecified causes.
Gordon was best known for the anarchic horror romp Re-Animator, part of a series of works loosely based on the tales of Hp Lovecraft which also included From Beyond and Dagon. He enjoyed the works of Edgar Allan Poe, adapting The Pit and the Pendulum, and strayed into science fiction with cult favourite Robot Jox. He was known for his exuberant approach to special effects, layering on the gore but always maintaining a sense of playfulness.

Beyond his genre work, Gordon explored film noir, working with David Mamet on Edmond and breaking into the mainstream with the thriller Stuck.

Roger Corman is alive and well and up to his old tricks.
At 93, the prodigiously prolific director, producer and mini-major mogul has been in the business long enough to receive scores of lifetime achievement awards — he’ll be getting another one this week in Houston, courtesy of the Houston Film Critics Society — and solidify his status as equal parts living legend and eminence grise.
He has more than 400 films to his credit, including the no-budget B-movies, darkly comical cult-faves and stylishly gothic Edgar Allen Poe adaptations he made in the 1950s and ‘60s, and the dozens of films he produced for American-International and his own companies, New World and Concorde Pictures, that provided major career boosts for such up-and-comers as Martin Scorsese, Francis Coppola, Ron Howard, Peter Bogdanovich, James Cameron, Jonathan Demme, Gale Anne Hurd and on and on and on.

The stage is set for shocking events in Rondo
In 1961, posters for Roger Corman's Edgar Allen Poe adaptation The Pit And The Pendulum promised to pay £10,000 to the family of the first audience member who died of fright. Drew Barnhardt's Rondo takes a similar approach with a poster warning viewers that what they are about to see may shock them beyond human endurance. It's weird, it's wild! the posters warn. It features sex, murder and revenge. Well, what's not to like?
Of course, it’s a difficult thing to shock audiences in this day and age. When Drew agreed to answer some questions about the film, I began by asking him if this approach was primarily a stylistic thing or was he seriously trying to shock. Does he think, based on reactions so far, that he got away with it?
Do you know what you're letting yourself in for?...

The world of filmmaker Stuart Gordon is wide reaching in tone and content; crime thrillers to cosmic horror have filled the screen for decades. And then there’s Dolls (1987), which occupies a special place for lovers of fairy tales with dripping meat on its bones; it’s as weird as you expect it to be, but with a sweet underbelly that refuses to stay down.
Made quickly after Re-Animator (’85) but before From Beyond (’86) to utilize Charles Band’s Italian studios for Empire Pictures, Dolls didn’t see release until release stateside until March of ’87, and quickly came and went with little fanfare. Perhaps folks were still attuned to Gordon’s very specific Lovecraftian vibrations to appreciate something so different at the time. Time has been kind however, and the film is generally regarded now as one of his better efforts from a varied (and storied) filmography.

For years now, I’ve been hosting horror movie marathons around Halloween. It’s my favourite time of year: an extended excuse to trawl through the trash bins of ‘80s and ‘90s horror in search of legit gems. To save you the pain of suffering through dumpster fires like Chopping Mall and House 4: The Repossession, I’ve summoned a list of ten sure-fire horror party bangers. These are films which nail the venerable Venn intersection of scares, humour and murderous efficiency.

Desert Daze – California’s psych-leaning boutique getaway – has left the desert for the grassy, sandy, gorgeous sprawl of Lake Perris State Recreation Area. If it remains in this spot, Desert Daze could get a rep as America’s most aesthetically pleasing fest, not just for the majestic view of the surrounding mountains, but for the festival organizers’ completely overboard attention to trippy projections, art installations and neon. All was not chill vibes this year – a lightning storm and forced evacuation ended Tame Impala’s Friday night set after three songs...

The Mistress of the Dark Cassandra Peterson has been in the pop culture zeitgeist, and rightfully so, for a while and she and her contributions to the horror genre and horror hosting are being recognized at this year's Hollywood Horrorfest. She will be receiving the festival's "Vincent Price" award.
Press Release: Hollywood Horrorfest (Hhf), the premier independent film festival devoted exclusively to the horror/suspense genre, is honoring renowned scream queen Cassandra ‘Elvira’ Peterson with this year’s official Price Award for excellence within the industry.
The Award, affectionately known as the ‘Vinnie’ in honor of legendary horror master Vincent Price, was created specifically for Hhf in order to celebrate Price’s legacy by ‘honoring an artist whose work has achieved equally iconic status’. Peterson's memorable creation of Elvira, according to festival founder/director Miles Flanagan, is definitely worthy of celebration.

I can’t wait for this release to finally come to fruition. It has been a long time since I have seen Stuart Gordon’s magical killer dolls film, so when Scream Factory announced it, they had my attention immediately. This is a “Collector’s Edition” so it looks as if it is getting the appropriate treatment. The artwork has been revealed, and the extras exposed. There appears to be a good mixture of both old and new. Including, but not limited to - all-new retrospective featuring interviews with director Stuart Gordon, producer Brian Yuzna, stars Carolyn Purdy-Gordon, Ian Patrick Williams, executive producer Charles Band, and special make-Up effects artists Gabe Bartalos, andJohn Vulich and more! Check out the press release below, and pre-order your copy by either clicking here for Shout!’s website, or here for Amazon.

Chris Alexander has snapped up some of the coolest jobs in horror journalism, and now he's creating cool new ones to take on as well. After a stint writing for Rue Morgue magazine, he moved on to become editor-in-chief at Fangoria, building a résumé between the two that is enough to make the rest of us genre hacks jealous. But then he went and resurrected Gorezone (which he edits), and now, in conjunction with horror/exploitation film legend Charles Band, he's helped create (and edit) Delirium, a magazine devoted to the film catalogs of Empire Pictures and Full Moon. It's with tongue planted firmly in cheek that I talk of jealousy, of course; Alexander is in the position(s) he's in through a combination of talent, hard work and an absolute love of the stuff he's writing about. That love shines through in Delirium #1, a debut issue that's as bold,...

New comic book Wednesday has come and gone. The dust at your local comic shop has settled. An eerie silence descends as you finish reading your last superhero book of the week. Now it's time for something a little more sinister. Welcome to Bagged and Boarded: comic reviews of the sick, spooky, twisted and terrifying! Judge Dredd Year One No. 3 Judge Dredd has been sent to a parallel version of his home city to find out what drove youthful rioters into a killing frenzy. In his world, disenfranchised teens began developing psychic powers. Whoever is behind their psychic ascendance must have done it elsewhere, and by creating a dimensional rift, Dredd is able to scope out the problem from a very different perspective. Bag it or board it up? Drokk that was a good issue! Damn! The action was intense, the plot is weaving into places normal Dredd plots don’t go,...

The year was 1995 and I was home, excited to see a little movie called Castle Freak. Why? Because the killer was insane looking. Then I saw it... his severed cock-nub. I've never been the same. Now to be able to see said cock-nub in full 1080p? Oh, friggin' my!
That's right, kids! Full Moon Entertainment has unleashed two of its most infamous films from director Stuart Gordon, Castle Freak and the 1991 lunacy laden flick The Pit and the Pendulum. Believe me you haven't lived until you've seen Lance Henriksen as Torquemada. It's almost as disturbing as a 1980p cock-nub. To order them now just hit up Full Moon Direct.
The Pit and the Pendulum Synopsis
Directed by Stuart Gordon and starring Lance Henriksen, Stephen Lee, Oliver Reed and William J. Norris.
In the quest to save souls, the Spanish Inquisition will stop at nothing and knows no boundaries for evil.

Stuart Gordon, director of the funny/scary/gross-out classic Re-Animator, will helm a big-screen adaptation of Benjamin Brand‘s real-life-inspired cannibal play, Taste. [Variety]
Taste is based on the so-called Rotenburg Cannibal — or, Armin Meiwes — who met a young man in a cannibal-fantasy Internet chatroom, killed him, and proceeded, as cannibals do, to consume his corpse. (Evidently this is a thing.)
Gordon and Adam Goldworm will produce and self-finance the project on a microbudget. Brand will be adapting his own play, a joint venture between the director’s Red Hen shingle and the the producers Aperture Entertainment. The former is currently searching about for actors, and will reportedly include some of the play’s cast.
In 2001, Meiwes feasted on a willing participant for his kill-someone-and-eat them fetish after a string of no-gos; at least several of the previous candidates had a fantasy so bizarre that even Meiwes was turned off. I have not seen this play,...

One of my favourite UK distributors, ranking up there with Arrow Video and Shameless, are 88 Films. The company, whilst relatively new to the UK scene, have hit the ground running – releasing a handful of fantastic 80s horror flicks to DVD, including: Tourist Trap, Sorority Babes in the Slimeball Bowl-a-Rama and The Pit and the Pendulum.
Well now the good folks at 88 Films have announced their next batch of Full Moon titles set for DVD (and also Blu-Ray, yes!) in July and August. Streeting on July 30th is The Dead Want Women and following on August 20th is the original Puppet Master movie – and not only is it being released on DVD it’s also coming on Blu-ray too!

Full Moon Pictures has given horror fans plenty of cult classic movies over the years and in its various incarnations whether it be the Gingerdead Man and Evil Bong franchises or, most famously and successfully, the Puppet Master, Ghoulies, and Subspecies franchises. This is, of course, to say nothing about some of their wild and crazy low-budget indie releases or their history of work with Stuart Gordon that led to such classics as Re-Animator and From Beyond and such underrated cult gems as The Pit and the Pendulum and Castle Freak!

Giove is a small village sited on the peak of a hill not far from Rome. It’s a cloudy and dark day when Fango arrives, and after a U-turn off the long, winding road leading there, the 900-year-old castle comes into view where the shooting of Skull Heads (out on DVD October 6) and Demonic Toys 2: Personal Demons (being helmed by Gingerdead Man 2’s William Butler; coming in December), two new horror movies from Charles Band’s Full Moon company, is taking place.
As soon as Fango enters the huge structure, a production assistant leads the way to the dungeon: the court of Band himself, owner of the castle, which he hasn’t filmed in since Meridian and Stuart Gordon’s The Pit And The Pendulum in the early ’90s. “It has been more than 15 years since we last shot a movie here,” he says. “You know, I have...

Fango heard from William Butler and Gage Munster, writer/director and FX artist respectively of Demonic Toys 2: Personal Demons, who just returned from the shoot in Italy and sent the exclusive photos seen below. The movie was lensed in Charles Band’s personal castle (also the site of such memorable flicks as Castle Freak and The Pit And The Pendulum), where the spooky atmosphere was both a blessing and a bit of a “curse.”
“The shoot went amazing,” Butler tells Fango. “This was the first time I had shot in Italy since back when I was an effects supervisor on old Empire films like Robot Jox, Arena, Dolls and Troll. I had remarkable experiences working on those with Irwin and Frank Yablans, Stuart Gordon, Yvonne DeCarlo, Viggo Mortensen, Lance Henriksen—and of course, who could forget Sonny Bono?” It seems he can add Demonic Toys to his list of fond memories.
