Great fun

DRAGON FIGHTER is a fine little thriller from Hong Kong, with a big cast taking part in a slightly slapdash story which feels poorly edited at times. And it's a remarkably coy film, refusing to explain some character's motivations until nearly at the climax, which leaves the viewer head-scratching at times. However, in the end this turns out to be great fun, not least for the insanely OTT climax in which a massive and explosive shoot-out takes place in a container park also housing a shanty town. Alex Man plays against type as a buffoonish dimwit and is great fun, while Alex Fong and Carrie Ng are more serious as the star-crossed lovers. Sibelle Hu does her usual tough cop routine with relish, Eddy Ko delivers another ultra-villain role, and the real stand-out is Michiko Nishiwaki, who excels as a woman on the path of revenge. Plenty of action and outrageous scenes make this an engaging film.
